Abstract:
Popular theater has significant, although largely overlooked, potential as a tool for unions to raise members’ political consciousness and strengthen their relationship to the union movement. Activist theater validates workers’ own knowledge, builds workers’ solidarity and self-confidence, and fosters an activist culture. It can also raise gender consciousness within unions. It has particular value for unions attempting to organize precarious workplaces such as call centers, where workers are especially vulnerable and often unfamiliar with unions and union culture. The balance of the world has been built on various empires, kingdoms, civilizations and economic systems for centuries. This study is written in the belief that the center of the world rule started to change. The determiners are not the leaders or the systems anymore but the individuals themselves. People are aware of that their voice can easily reach to the rest of the world. For most of the people it is not onlysharing their ideas on various social networks but also playing an active role in the world order. This research project uses practical work and a supporting text to explore activism in contemporary art. Its chief concern is to consider what constitutes an activist art practice by clarifying the terms of engagement of such work. In the textual part of this submission the production of recent and contemporary artists who are widely presumed to make activist art has been examined. Their different approaches have been identified and critical evaluations of them have been offered. The artists under review include Christian Boltanski, Agnes Denes, Hans Haacke, Thomas Hirschhorn, Edward Kienholz,

This thesis inquires into how an elementary art education curriculum can embody the space in/between aesthetic formalism and socio/political activism. I call this curricular approach aesthetic/activism. Visual texts will be the catalyst for research subjects to engage with aesthetic/activism through art-making, writing and dialogue. I am also interested in the learning and meaning-making that happens as a result of an aesthetic/activist curriculum. Abstract:
Some art educators working in communities exemplify an alternative to the more common and stereotypical notion of the artist as autonomous, self-focused, and neutral. They view art-making and education as vehicles for social justice, and in some cases for social and political activism. In these broader social functions, the boundaries between art, education and activism fade. Drawing on perspectives from community art education, sociology, art criticism, critical pedagogy, and social justice education, and based on in-depth interviews with participants, this study examines the motivations, per

This thesis is concerned with AIDS cultural activism. Specifically, it examines artistic responses to the medical/scientific image of HIV that circulates widely in the mainstream press. Examples of AIDS science reporting that focus on the medical/scientific image of HIV are selected from popular American news journals. It is argued that science and journalism are different and mutually dependent domains of knowledge, neither of which can be examined without the other. The study investigated the multidisciplinary programming that was created to fulfill its motto of “Art for People’s Sake.” The five themes developed from the program research included: 1) the NAC represented the juxtaposition between the individual and the community, local and national; 2) the NAC reached
