David Lamelas’s life-long research projects have included examinations of social phenomena. The artist takes interest in the dynamics of mass communication and media, urban mundane activities, and documentary films. He employs the element of time often in the structure of his art as an innovative approach by which to study his subjects.

I argue that in pairing the element of time with social phenomena, Lamelas exposes how people’s perceptions, both the visual experience and the thought processes impacted by these experiences, tend to work, therefore leading viewers to

Abstract:
What happens to the memories that are left behind in photographs when the person who’s memories they are passes away? After the passing of both my mother and my grandmother, I began to notice the fleeting significance of photographs. I spent time going through boxes of pictures they had saved and every so often I would come across an old photo of someone or something that no one in my family could find a meaning behind or attach a significance to. This paper reveals how the meaning and importance of photographs shift over time from the perspective of the photographer to that of the preserver.

Abstract:
This study investigated the relationship between visual cues in art reproductions, simple linguistic time vocabulary and children's temporal understandings. During interview sessions, 33 third-grade students attending two suburban schools were asked to place three art postcard reproductions sets in chronological order. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and coded for analysis. Linguistic references used to represent historical time and visual cues within the art postcards which caused students to place art works in a particular time sequence were documented.

This study investigates changes in ceramics at Tell Leilan, Syria, during three consecutive periods between 2500 and 2200 B.C. These changes co-occur with significant socio-political changes: urbanization of the region and fledgling statehood. The approach developed to examine ceramic change in this work is Ceramic Technical Sequence Analysis (CTSA) which combines the strategies of ceramic ecology, the French technique et culture school, and behavioral archaeology. CTSA is also informed by practice theory; thus, the limitations of previous work in ceramic technology are reduced. This technolog

This dissertation investigates how Japanese expositions held from the 1890s to the 1940s, both abroad and at home, represented Japan itself as a 'guardian of Asian culture' while promoting the expansion of its empire. Japan's governing stance over other Asian nations at expositions during the prewar period appeared to imitate the imperial exhibitions of its Western counterparts, and yet the Japanese engagement of Asia in these exhibitions was portrayed as "almost the same, but not quite" the same empire.
