Abstract:
The study of specific types of chests is one of the most prolific areas of the research of Russian chest production. However, today they receive insufficient attention from researches. This paper deals with the history of one of the types of Russian chests called «baul». The issues of their appearance in Russia, their connection with European items (in particular, Scandinavian ones) are considered and specific museum works are analyzed. The comparative method is used to identify the artistic features of Russian «bauls». Items of Russian and foreign museum collections were used. The author draws several conclusions: the chest called «baul» is an independent type of Russian chests; the «baul» as a type of chest was most likely borrowed by Russian craftsmen from Western Europe; despite of the obvious similarity that can be seen in its form and design, Russian and foreign products have their own art style; Russian masters were participants in the pan-European cultural process.

Abstract:
Stendhal’s syndrome occurs among travelers when they encounter a work of art of great beauty. It is characterized by an altered perception of reality, emotional disturbances, and crises of panic and anxiety with somatization. The patient profile described originally for this syndrome was of particularly sensitive individuals who were admirers of works or art: artists, poets, writers and art students, among others. The Russian writer Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky suffered from epilepsy and there is evidence that he presented the symptoms of Stendahl’s syndrome while contemplating some works of art, particularly when viewing Hans Holbein’s masterpiece, Dead Christ, during a visit to the museum in Basle.

Marc Azéma a Palaeolithic researcher and film maker has been exploring the representation of animal movement in cave art for more than 20 years, and here shares with us his latest examples, culled from the parietal art in the Chauvet Cave (Ardèche) and La Baume Latrone (Gard). Here he has shown that Palaeolithic artists have invented systems of breaking down movement and graphic narrative. His co-author, Florent Rivère, discovered that animal movement was also represented in more dynamic ways—with the use of animals drawn on a spinning disc. In these flickering images created by Palaeolithic people, the authors suggest, lie the origins of cinema.

Abstract:
The situation of Swiss art libraries is determined by different historic developments. The different Swiss cantons, with their sovereignty in cultural matters, and the four official languages of the country, have impeded the development of a homogeneous libraries’ scene. The development of art libraries has been constrained by the slow and erratic growth of art history and museology. In Switzerland there are three centres for art libraries: Basle and Zurich, and Geneva, in French-speaking Switzerland. An art library for Italian-speaking Switzerland - as once again recommended in a recently published Grundlagenbericht für Kunstgeschichte (= Basic Report for Art History) - is still desired.

Abstract:
Werner Schmidt (Trübbach, Switzerland, 1953) is one of the most interesting contemporary 'green' architects, particularly experienced in straw-bale building. His accomplishments include now 20 straw-bale buildings of which 14 at least partially load-bearing. This paper extracts some essential principles from his work and explains in detail his technological solutions. This is the result of a thorough analysis, carried on during the preparation of a monograph. The success of his approach derives from many factors, among which: - Schmidt's training as a mason. In contrast with many fellow architects, his designs are rooted in practicality and feasibility. Moreover, he actively participates to the construction work. - His holistic vision of ecological building: straw bales are chosen because of the overall advantages they offer. Preferably, he adopts a modified 'Nebraska' technique, using high-density 'jumbo bales' forming more than 120 cm thick walls. This rather unique method assures rapidity of construction, and allows to solve a number of criticalities associated with 'small bale' building. - Not seeking the highest possible performances lets to focus economic and technical efforts on few elements that really need to be state-of-the-art. The envelope can be built with simple techniques, while parts that need be built precisely (stairs, cooking implements, baths, etc.) can be prefabricated. Schmidt's work shows that high ecological consideration can be coupled with convincing architectural results. The quality of his buildings in terms of energy performance, living value, and beautiful form constitutes a good practice promoting new ways to 'green' architecture.

Full text
Abstract:
HighlightsRotary knives were added to an ear-snapper header to increase corn stover yield in a single-pass biomass system.Stover yield increased with the number of knives but at the expense of combine productivity and fuel consumption.Bale moisture was often greater than would be considered appropriate for good aerobic conservation.Abstract.Modifications were made to a conventional ear-snapper corn header to increase corn stover yield when a single-pass round baling system was integrated with a combine harvester. To collect more leaves and top portions of stalks, knives oriented parallel to the deck plates were added to shear crop material above the ear-snapper rolls. Stover yield was primarily altered by the number of knives on the header; and to a lesser extent by the fore-and-aft position of the knives and the header height. The number of knives on a 12-row header was varied from two to six in increments of two. Stover yield increased linearly with the number of knives, and dry basis stover yield ranged from 1.1 Mg ha-1 (no knives) to 3.6 Mg ha-1 (six knives) over the five years of data collected (2012 to 2016). Combine productivity decreased linearly and specific fuel consumption increased linearly with greater stover yield. Combine productivity declined by as much as 50% when six knives were used. Dry basis bale density decreased linearly with the number of knives because the dense cobs became a smaller fraction of the total bale mass. In three of the five years, bale moisture increased linearly with the number of knives; in those three years, bale moisture was typically greater than 30% (wet basis). Adding knives to the header increased single-pass stover yield but at considerable cost to combine harvester productivity, and aerobic bale conservation would be challenged by high bale moisture. Keywords: Baling, Combine, Corn, Density, Moisture, Productivity, Stover, Yield.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article discusses the development of children’s literature in France, which influenced all European children’s literature, which went along the path of education, training and parenting, in contrast to American children’s literature, which took a course primarily on entertainment. The study presents the reasons for the pedagogical path of children’s French literature, shows the foundations of approaches that are rooted in the humanistic ideas of the Russian writer and educator L.N. Tolstoy, the Czech educator F. Bakule and his follower L. Havranek. Russian artists who emigrated from the Soviet Russia (for various reasons), but who were closely connected with the Russian education, also played a fundamental role in this influence. The influence of the concept of the development of children by means of art, developed by F. Bakule, on the publishing projects of the French educator P. Faucher is analyzed in particular. The scientist, educator, book publisher P. Faucher is shown as the central figure of this successful book-publishing project. His role in this project, as well as his importance as a person who influenced the development of children’s literature, are known. At the same time, little is known about the sources of his pedagogical creativity, his book publishing ideas, and there is no scientific coverage of the role of artists in the implementation of pedagogical ideas in book publishing. The issue is resolved by the example of the publication of a series of children’s books “Albums of Father Beaver”, which had been published for about thirty years (in the 1930s and 1960s), was translated into 20 languages. In 2018, the series was included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. The article is to some extent interdisciplinary in nature, the authors needed to turn, first of all, to the pedagogical science, but also to the art criticism and research in the field of book publishing.

Abstract:
By way of a multidisciplinary approach, this article advances the idea that our listening to certain practices of contemporary art music (electroacoustic, classical contemporary, and electronic music) relies on precise connections to the early stage of perception. These styles of music are characterised by essential sound configurations that evolve in time, thus eliciting a sensorial impact which transcends features regarding sound sources and affective responses. Listeners grasp what Scruton calls ‘pure events’ in a ‘world of sound’, being able to distinguish, separate and sort acoustic stimuli. The article establishes a key parallel among seminal works of Bregman, McAdams, Kubovy, Bayle and other authors, highlighting a fundamental agreement of perceptual studies in psychology, neurophysiology and musicology for the understanding of the early stage of sound perception. Music practices typical of this perspective develop certain sound configurations, such as figure/ground arrangements, recurrent elements and morphological distinction, that closely mirror our innate mechanisms of prediction in perception. A parallel is made between studies in the philosophy of perception and the neurophysiology which allows us to postulate the idea that these styles of music are essentially based on pure temporal proto-objects.

Abstract:
The writings of Anne Askew and the Princess Elizabeth have received attention as two of a small number of published works by women in the Tudor period. The lengthy additions and glosses of their editor, John Bale, have garnered much less notice. Bale appropriated these writings for the use of protestant polemic, and presented their authors as exemplary historical agents worthy of emulation by men and women alike. By situating these two women in his apocalyptic rewriting of the past, he created for women a place in the new protestant history of the realm. The struggle of the True and the False Churches provided for Bale a fluid situation in which women might be required to assume behaviours typically labeled masculine; he used these writings, and the sanction of historical precedent, to advocate an active, public role for educated women.

This paper examines the way in which old systems of allegiance are interrogated, and replaced by an emergent nationalism in two writers closely associated with the Cromwell government: Richard Morison and John Bale. In their attempt to contruct nationhood in sixteenth-century England, both Morison and Bale adapt late medieval ways of imagining community in order to provoke a shift in allegiance and a reunification of the English nation modelled on patriarchal structures.

Pulp washing process has the features of multivariate, time delay, nonlinearity. Considering the difficulties of modeling and optimal control in pulp washing process, a data-driven operational-pattern optimization method is proposed to model and optimize the pulp washing process in this paper. The most important quality indexes of pulp washing performance are residual soda in the washed pulp and Baume degree of extracted black liquor. Considering the difficulties of modeling, online measurement of these indexes, two-step neural networks, and multivariate logistic regression are used to establish the prediction models of residual soda and Baume degree. The mathematical model of the washing process can be identified, and the indexes can meet the production requirements. In the target of better product quality, low cost, and low energy consumption, a multiobjective problems is solved by ant colony optimization algorithm based on the optimized operational-pattern database. It shows that the theoretical analyses are correct and the practical applications are feasible, optimization control system has been designed for the pulp washing process, and the practical results show that pulp production increased by 20% and water consumption decreased by nearly 30%. This method is effective in the pulp washing process.
