Abstract:
The subject of this research is the peculiarities of the psychological approaches of European experts of the late XIX – early XX centuries (psychiatrists of the so-called “historical psychiatry”), art historians and painters of the XX century, specializing in collection of the works of mentally ill people (or art brut). The historical-comparative method is applied for determination of the specifics of the naive art of Western Europe in the XIX – XX centuries and its comparison with other areas of amateur art of this period. The psychological approach is essential for studying the works of mentally ill people (or art brut) and its key peculiarities. The comparative method allows analyzing the modern forms of art brut and naive art. The novelty consists in outlining the principal psychological approaches of foreign experts with the art brut, the interpretation of which contributes to decoding of all amateur art. Evolution of views stems from determination of similarities between genius and mental disorders, tracing patterns in creative process of the patients, assessment of the ability of a person with mental disorder to creative thinking and invent the object of art prior to learning the artistic beginning. In this regard, the psychological approach revealed the key trends in studying amateur art: from the perspective of Marseille Rege (with his “embryonic” view) to the point of view of Morgenthaller (with his realization of creativity of the patients), and artistic views of Prinzhorn and Dubuffet, who focus on the art criteria: vision of form, color, composition and other formal attributes of an artwork. Thus, the interpretation of art brut becomes a certain “bridge” for understanding the sphere of the naive art.

Abstract:
In many cultures, it has been a long-established practice to apply various domains of art as therapy methods in asylums, prisons and rehabilitation centres in order to help people express themselves and their current circumstances and to aid cure themselves. Hans Prinzhorn’s book entitled ‘Artistry of the mentally ill’, which was published in 1924 in Berlin has been the initial resource for Art Brut, also known as ‘raw art’. A French artist, Jean Dubuffet has first used Art Brut as an artistic term in 1945, which has ignited major debates in the artistic milieu. The ultimate goal of these artists was to unveil the works of those with no art education, of mentally ill patients, rejected and marginalised individuals, children and major criminals, in order to question the authenticity of all established approaches to art through the revelation of instinctive expression andthe purest form of creation. Keywords: Art Brut, Jean Dubuffet, raw art, outsider art, primitive art.

Abstract:
In this comprehensive paper, I present the thesis that the clinical biopower—which means biopouvoir according to Michel Foucault—can be countered with the help of artistic ability. In this sense, the psychiatric clinic may turn into a space of inclusion, respect, and true self-unfolding. Following Jean Dubuffet, I give a definition of art brut and analyze some works of German and Austrian outsiders of the 20th century, who succeeded in overcoming life-crises, such as childhood poverty, experiences of war, psychical illness, or social ostracism. I match the biopolitical character of psychiatry clinics against the most recent ideas of art therapy. The remainder of the article is organized in four parts: (1) Introduction: Raw Art, (2) Alterity: Beyond of Normality and Pathology, (3) Talent for Sovereignty, (4) Conclusion: The Between.

Abstract:
This paper examines the possibility that the discourse of dismantlement of faciality can be combined with character creation in the digital age by analyzing the facial images in Jean Dubuffet's Art Brut painting focusing on Gilles Deleuze's concept of 'faciality'. According to Deleuze, the face is a layer of linguistic expression deterritorialized from the body, and it is the mechanism of faciality that fixes humans to signifiance and subjectification by a single code that dominates Western civilization. This paper attempts to capture the prototype of the face that the mechanism of faciality do not penetrate through the raw image of faces in Art Brut, which breaks down the classical representation system. These informel faces of Art Brut and Deleuze's undecidable faces suggest the possibility of various expressions of face and body images through the undecidability between faciality and body, and the relationship with material objects. In other words, the deconstruction of faciality as claimed in this paper can open the infinite possibilities of creating digital characters with another vitality as a new approach to face representation.

Abstract:
This paper examines the symmetry logic of Chilean psychiatrist Matteo Blanco's theory of the unconscious in relation to symmetrical paintings in the Collection de l'Art Brut. The purpose of this thesis is to apply Blanco's theory of symmetry, which has not been developed as a case study, to the Art Brut in order to provide a theoretical basis for the symmetry seen in the work of schizophrenic artists, and to gain a deeper understanding of the Art Brut, which consists almost exclusively of paintings. As a result, the meaning of symmetrical compositions in Blanco's view is summarized as “balance and order in chaos” and “the unrepressed unconscious”. In the case of severe schizophrenia, where the distinction between inside and outside, real and imaginary, is blurred, there is a symmetrical composition that creates balance and order in the unconscious. We hope this paper will be a meaningful message for interdisciplinary research that is biased towards mainstream art, and for the psychiatric community, which needs to listen to the voices of those affected and develop alternatives from their perspective.
