Abstract:
This style first appeared in 1925 and developed until 1940. Abstract:
Abstract - Modernization gradually leads to the development of modern architecture, leaving local architecture behind. Consequently, modern architecture begins to overshadow the existence of Indonesian local architecture. Thus, there’s an urgent need for a fusion of the local and modern elements in architecture.Notably, through observation, the distinctive Art Deco context is a strong character in Bandung. Moreover, Bandung is ranked 9th in the City Of Art Deco in The World. During the modern architecture era, international style was developed as one of the architectural styles. This style has been appreciated and favored by the public up to this day because it is considered to follow the development of the industry and technology while remaining functional. This research method is descriptive qualitative and analytical methods. The first step is to identify the building designs, followed by identifying the Art Deco and international style characteristics in the buildings and the fusion. Theoretically and practically, this research is expected to provide additional insights for both the author and readers regarding Bandung's Art Deco heritage, thereby contributing to the field of architectural knowledge In general, the result reveals that both hotels exhibit Art Deco and international style features in their designs. In terms of percentage, The Gaia Hotel Bandung has a dominance of 46.7% classified as Modern Art Deco. Meanwhile, Padma Hotel Bandung has a percentage of 47.02% classified as Modern Art Deco. It can be observed that Padma Hotel has a higher Art Deco percentage. Keywords: fusion, art deco, international style, dominance

Abstract:
The Creative Fashion Center is a place for fashion workshops, makeup workshops, bazaars and catwalks with an emphasis on the art deco architectural style. Fashion is a familiar term in everyday life. We often identify fashion with clothes or clothes, when in fact what is said fashion is everything that is trending in society. Consumers can be regarded as the main driving force of the fashion industry. Because apart from being a buyer, they are also the ones who determine and choose the style to become a fashion trend. The architectural approach of this building is art deco. Art deco architecture was a popular design movement from 1920 to 1939, which influenced the decorative arts of architecture. This architectural style is suitable for the Creative Fashion Center building because art deco represents charm, elegance and luxury. And in my opinion, art deco style can represent the elegance and luxury of the pop art fashion style favored by young people.

Abstract:
Art Deco, as a mode of design, was a response to the conditions of post-World War I modernity, including the advent of “mass” culture, a desire for a return to order, and an intense interest in mobility—physical/geographical, conceptual, temporal, and social. This thesis argues that mobility lies at the heart of Art Deco as it fashioned public cultural spaces throughout the globe in the interwar years. Both the iconography and general formal qualities (whether zig-zag forms popular in the 1920s or streamlining of the 1930s) evinced the idea of movement, which suited the optimism of the 1920s as well as a desire for control in the period of socio-political unrest caused by the Depression. This thesis explores some of the socio-political ramifications of the style as it entered the patterns and spaces of everyday life (i.e., lifestyle). The imaging of mobility so apparent on the surfaces of Art Deco points to the larger, interpenetrating systems of mobility that underpin the fabrication of modern public cultures. These “mobilities” included migration, transportation, commodity exchange, capital, and communication (notably print, film, and radio, but also fashion, design, and architecture). While the Deco appeared “new” in a manner consonant with the sense of immediacy (even fashionability) brought about by these mobilities, and optimistically gestured to a new world in the future-present, the style ultimately reinscribed the pre-existing social order. It was a cosmopolitan style: traditional yet modern, “worldly” in appearance yet local. This thesis travels through a number of different spaces, envisioning Art Deco as a kind of crossroads—a style of flow and intermixture yet stability. While celebrating mobility, the Deco often masked other forms of (im)mobility. I examine these concepts in relation to the Marine Building in Vancouver, Bullock’s Wilshire department store in Los Angeles, the Regal and Eros cinemas in Bombay (Mumbai), and the design of radio cabinets in Canada. In so doing, the thesis suggests the reach of the Deco into everyday life and across the globe, and offers a new way to approach a style that is most often associated with the frivolous by emphasizing its socio-political implications.

The present paper gives a consistent overview of the development of Lithuanian furniture making during 1900-1940. Focussing on Lithuanian furniture making in the first half of the 20th century, which has remained until recently little analysed yet fundamental to deepening one’s artistic perception, this paper sets out to analyse the furniture and furniture projects created by artists in the socio-cultural context. In order to shed light on the development of furniture making, the paper discusses the arts and crafts movement which emerged at the beginning of the 20th century and its impact on the development of Lithuanian furniture making. It also gives an overview of the Art Nouveau stylistics of the time and analyses the heritage of furniture making by A. Jaroševičius and P. Rimša. When Lithuania became independent after the First World War the life in the country changed, therefore, in order to shed light on the situation of furniture making during 1918-1940 the paper focuses on the interwar socio-cultural context and outlines the reasons of confluence of Art Deco and Ethnic Style in furniture making. It also analyses the works of J. Prapuolenis, the most famous interwar cabinetmaker, and discusses the sketches of furniture of G. Bagdonavičius as well as the unique furniture design of P. Galaunė. During the interwar representative interiors served as an important means of expressing national identity, therefore, the paper analyses the furniture projects of interior... [to full text]

Abstract With the environmental push toward "Green" coatings; parking decks can also get in on the act by more than just having low VOC's. The presentation will discuss the use and benefits of IR-reflecting (cool) pigments in parking deck topcoats. Touching on their applicability to the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) point system set up by the USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council) and also the mitigation of the urban heat island effect. Although not normally considered in parking deck coatings; it takes an idea widely used in "cool roof" coatings and makes it applicable to parking decks. Depending upon depth of color these results can be dramatic with large surface temperature improvements and possible improvements in durability.

Abstract:
Art Deco decorative style, born in France as a chic fashion- style, in 1910–30-ies occupied all, levels of design of the living environment from fashion, advertising, interior design and technology — to the architecture of skyscrapers, films, musical oratorios, as well as works of fine art art. Russian artists of the fi rst third of the twentieth century played a significant role in the formation and development of Art Deco. Among them, an important place was occupied by representatives of the first wave of domestic emigration, who left Russia during the years of the revolution as already accomplished masters. For a long time in the Soviet Union they were beyond the attention of art historians.

Abstract:
Limitations in the human decision-making process restrict the technological potential of algorithms, which is also referred to as "algorithm aversion". This study uses a laboratory experiment with participants to investigate whether a phenomenon known since 1982 as the "decoy effect" is suitable for reducing algorithm aversion. For numerous analogue products, such as cars, drinks or newspaper subscriptions, the Decoy Effect is known to have a strong influence on human decision-making behaviour. Surprisingly, the decisions between forecasts by humans and Robo Advisors (algorithms) investigated in this study are not influenced by the Decoy Effect at all. This is true both a priori and after observing forecast errors.

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering., February 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.17760/d20476962.

Abstract:
Earthquake disasters in the United States account for $6.1 billion of economic losses each year, much of which is directly linked to infrastructure damage. These natural disasters are unpredictable and represent one of the most difficult design problems in regard to constructing resilient infrastructure. Structural floor and roof diaphragms act as the horizontal portion of the lateral force resisting system (LFRS), distributing the seismically derived inertial loads out from the heavy concrete slabs to the vertical LFRS. Composite concrete-filled steel deck floor and roof diaphragms are ubiquitously used in commercial construction worldwide due to the ease of construction and cost-effective use of structural material. This report presents a series of composite steel deck diaphragm Push-out tests at full scale that explore the effect that cyclic loading has on the strength of steel headed stud anchors. The effect that cyclic loading has on structural performance is explored across the variation of material and geometric parameters in the Push-out specimens, such as concrete density, steel headed stud anchor placement and grouping, steel deck orientation, and edge conditions. As compared to prior tests in the literature, the push-out tests conducted in this work have an extended specimen length that includes four rows of studs along the length rather than the typical two rows of studs, and an ability to impose cyclic loading. This provides novel insight into force flows in the specimens, failure mechanisms, and load distribution between studs and stud groups.

Baah, Prince. Implementing Epoxy Injection in Concrete Overlaid Bridge Decks. Purdue University, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.5703/1288284317588.

Full text
Abstract:
Concrete overlays have proven to be an effective maintenance treatment as they slow de-icing chemical and water penetration into the original deck surface. Typically, due to vibration, structural flexibility, and weak bond between the concrete overlay and deck concrete potentially due to poor construction, de-bonding develops at the boundary between the original deck and overlay. This de-bonding creates voids, providing reservoir for chloride laden water to fill after it penetrates cracks in the surface. Displacing this liquid solution and filling these cracks with epoxy helps reduce freeze/thaw cycling and reduces spalling. The epoxy material protects the bridge deck from moisture and helps support the overlay and prevent it from failing under traffic loads. This leads to an extension of the asset life span and life cycle cost benefit increase. Overall, the bridge infrastructure performance improves significantly with greater mobility and less traffic interruptions due to repairs to bridges on our roadway infrastructures. Epoxy injection helps extends the service life of bridge decks and reduces the need for emergency bridge deck patching and as a result improves safety of road users. Epoxy injection has been added to INDOT’s Maintenance Work Performance Standards during the course of this study.

Abstract:
Earthquake disasters in the United States account for $6.1 billion of economic losses each year, much of which is directly linked to infrastructure damage. These natural disasters are unpredictable and represent one of the most difficult design problems regarding constructing resilient infrastructure. Structural floor and roof diaphragms act as the horizontal portion of the lateral force resisting system (LFRS), distributing the seismically derived inertial loads out from the heavy concrete slabs to the vertical LFRS. Concrete-filled steel deck diaphragms are ubiquitously used in steel construction worldwide due to the ease of construction and cost-effective use of material. This report first presents a series of concrete-filled steel deck push-out tests that explores the effect of cyclic loading on the strength of steel headed stud anchors. The effect that cyclic loading has on structural performance is explored across different concrete densities, steel headed stud anchor placements and groupings, steel deck orientations, and edge conditions. As compared to prior tests, the push-out tests conducted in this work included four rows of studs along the length rather than the typical two rows, and an ability to impose cyclic loading. This provided novel insight into force flows, failure mechanisms, and load distribution between studs and stud groups. Most of the specimens also used lightweight concrete, as is common in high seismic zones.Secondly, this report describes a full-scale experimental concrete-filled steel deck diaphragm specimen which explored the cyclic behavior and capacity of this structural system. This experiment builds on previously reported experimental studies. This specimen demonstrated force distribution and flows in an indeterminant floor system and captured realistic boundary conditions and construction practices that affect the performance of this system in building structures. The results showed that concrete-filled steel deck diaphragms fail as expected and may have significant overstrength. Furthermore, a finite element framework is presented that can simulate cyclic fracture through the use of a high-fidelity steel material model. This framework was used and validated against nine experimental push-out specimens tested and documented as part of this research. The simulation capacity provides an avenue to further investigate this structural system through simulated parametric study.

Abstract:
During the lifecycle of a bridge, deterioration of the concrete deck originates from many sources, e.g., corrosion due to water infiltration in conjunction with chlorides from the use of de-icing salts. Such deterioration may be affected by any one of the following six actions relevant to a bridge from conception to demolition: design, construction, in-service conditions, maintenance, repair and rehabilitation, and replacement. Many researchers have studied the relationships between these sources and their consequences. However, the relationship between construction defects and inspection practices, and its impact on the deterioration process has not yet been identified. This project focuses on the development of predictive models to assess the impact that defects present during concrete bridge deck construction may have on the lifecycle performance of the bridge deck in terms of the chemical and environmental deterioration relevant to Indiana. Based on the relevant cost information from the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), a methodology is developed here to determine the potential costs associated with this deterioration. Recommendations relevant to construction and inspection and data collection practices are discussed to improve future bridge construction and inspection practices. The models and methods developed in this work will enable INDOT to better predict the accelerated deterioration of a concrete deck when a construction defect has been identified and the associated additional cost.
