Abstract:

Abstract:
The Figure of the Labyrinth between Philosophy, Art and Literature The aim of this article is to draw analogies between the Prisons by Piranesi and The Castle by Franz Kafka in the light of the figure of the labyrinth. In these specific cases, the architectonics (as a pseudo- arrangement of perspective planes) and the plot (as a factitious connection between action sequences) enclose the illusion of depth and the impression of duration in the vicious circles of the lines of rupture and of the missed events, respectively. The Piranesian atopic topic (from atopos, « out of place ») and the Kafkaesque apraxic practice (from apraktos, « inconclusive ») are both based on unsurpassable antinomies and, in this particular respect, seem to revive Zeno of Elea’s paradoxes of motion and Diodorus Cronus’ aporia of becoming, which Gottfried W. Leibniz considers to be two labyrinths.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Graves, i. Lassaw, p. Jenkins, sam francis, m. Tobey, william t. Wiley, j. Cage, r. Lippold, eric orr, j. Mccracken, c. Von wiegand, g. Onslow-ford, a. Atwell, j. Miles, g. Beker, j. Johns, o. Fischinger, j. Whitney, j. Belson, p. Sharits, malevitch, kandinsky, mondrian, pollock etc. )
Buddhism postulates the void and pure consciousness as both the efficient and final cause of nature. In the first part, we show that this theory influences the design of sino- japanese and tibetan mandalas as well as the art of zen, through two explanations : 10) explanation of the origin of mandala, of its development in the context of indian esoteric buddhism, of sino-japanese and tibetan mandalas and extended interpretations of the buddhist mandala. C. G. Jung and mircea eliade introduce the mandala concept into the interculturel field, by establishing a relationship between certain circular, symmetrical and directional shapes, from the paleolithic era up until our time. 20) explanation of the basic tenets of buddhist philosophy, of its development and of the art of zen. In the second part, we study how the buddhist concepts translate into the formal system of the works of art, the creation of mandalas, artistic and creative psychology and the work of arts assessment. We examine how such concepts influence artistic analysis through the writings of american artists and directors, as well as through the study of important contemporary artists such as ad reinhardt, m. Graves, i. Lassaw, p. Jenkins, sam francis, m. Tobey, william t. Wiley, j. Cage, r. Lippold, eric orr, j. Mccracken, c. Von wiegand, g. Onslow-ford, a. Atwell, j. Miles, g. Beker, j. Johns, 0. Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper takes a fresh look at Johannes Clauberg’s Logica vetus et nova, in order to try to clarify its nature and character. Differently from prior readings of Clauberg that analyze his philosophy from the point of view of the construction of ‘ontology’, the approach of the present paper sees in Clauberg’s philosophy a late-Humanist work, accentuating his pedagogic and hermeneutical interests. Indeed, in Clauberg’s philosophy, hermeneutics and pedagogy are intrinsically bound together. This, the paper suggests, is supported not only by the concrete subject-matters of his logic, but also by the examination of Clauberg’s milieu and of his sources. Analysis, in this framework, has a strictly hermeneutical usage.

Abstract:
AbstractEarly childhood pedagogy in Australia is founded on rights-based philosophies that promote social justice, democratic communities, participation, and agency of societies’ youngest citizens. There are, however, significant challenges in realising these philosophies and enacting democratic, agentic early childhood education (ECE) for birth to five-year-old children. This chapter presents three research projects, viewed together through a lens of agency and aligned with the education complex (Kemmis et al., 2012), that highlight the interdependent practices of leading, teaching, and researching in Australian ECE contexts. The first project investigated the emergence and development of effective leadership practices and the arrangements that enabled and constrained them. The second project explored educators’ risk-taking practices, aligning with praxis as morally and ethically informed decision-making about what is ‘best’ for children and societies (Kemmis & Smith, 2008). The third project documented infants’ social and emotional communication and highlighted how the research practices helped enable infants’ participation and agency. Though the focus of each study was different, collectively they illuminate interdependent practices of an ‘ECE complex’, and how individual and collective agencies can optimise pedagogy with and for very young children to live well and help create a world worth living in (Kemmis et al., 2014).

Abstract:
French philosopher of technology Gilbert Simondon is undoubtedly one of the key figures when it comes to conceptualizing individuation across physical, mental and social strata. In this article, we develop a rather overlooked aspect of Simondon’s work, namely how his ontogenetic project also implies an idea of a “human science” based on a “human energetics,” which—maybe in spite of its name—is an inherently transhumanist project transducing across both disciplinary and experiential fields, with a particular emphasis on the role of technology. We present key concepts in Simondon’s work and relate them to lines of thinking on energies in the arts (Kahn) and post-colonialism (Wynter), exemplified through an analysis of Nigerian artist Otobong Nkanga’s video work “Remains of the Green Hill.” Our primary aim with the article is to continue a mobilization of Simondonian concepts and thinking for an experimental, transhumanist exploration in relation to its ethico-aesthetic and artistic potential.

Abstract:
This article aims to present the collective research that has been made in the framework of the research seminar "Vocabulary of the Virtual" organized by IRCAV (Institute of Research on Cinema and Audiovisual Studies), Sorbonne Nouvelle and the “Spatial Media” group, EnsadLab. The main topic is to clarify the notions that refer to the concept of the "Virtual" in order to define it through an interdisciplinary approach according to different fields of science (aesthetics, philosophy, film theory, sound theory, ergonomics, design, engineering, cognitive sciences, etc.). This article presents many different conceptual tools such as cartography, mental maps, notional diagrams with several dimensions, etc., that have been conceived over the last three years, to show how the reflection on the concept of the Virtual was first established and constructed, and how it has been developed. The notion of symbiosis seems to be defined as a structuring notion of the concept of the Virtual across the process of anchoring the levels of virtuality inside technological devices and concrete sites, as well as inside the physical body of the VR users. The user’s body serves as a catalyst for the concept of the Virtual which then becomes organic.

Abstract:
Creative arts organizations are constituted by intricate symbiotic relationships between diverse stakeholders, including creatives, technicians, software programmers and producers. These thrive when facilitated by clear, seamless and swift communication. Cyber-physical systems can support such exchange yet require careful aesthetic design. Inspired by Manuel DeLanda’s philosophical framework, the paper introduces iModel, a new networked modelling system that facilitates operatic rehearsal design via an interactive cyber-physical spatial aesthetic. After mapping its conceptual framework, we detail iModel’s architecture and functionalities that provide a shared workspace for distributed teams. iModel is capable of assimilating diverse data formats and enabling real-time manipulation and seamless previsualization of complex interactions between all components of operatic production, including orchestration of set ensembles, video content, cast movements and lighting design, all synchronized with the musical score. The paper reflects on iModel’s real-world application in 2022 in the design and technical production departments at Opera Australia, Australia’s largest performing arts organization. We conclude with a reflection on the coalescence of philosophy, art and technology as a powerful conduit for catalyzing creative practice toward realizing new symbiotic imaginaries on and beyond the screen.

Abstract:
he article focuses on the critique of the definition of art by the American art philosopher Arthur Coleman Danto (1924–2013). This definition could be called the “missing link” in the understanding of art for people who do not understand why modern art is art, or openly criticize and abnegate it on the basis of such incomprehension. In Danto’s theory, one can point to three criteria that any object must meet in order to become an artwork – aboutness, embodiment and inclusion in the artworld, in other words, being in a social and historical relationship with all the art that exists to date. However, since any definition should adequately describe every subject to which it applies, the definition of art must be able to explain all expressions of art. Although Danto’s idea has proven its competence in defining visual art, is it as successful in embracing other forms of art, for example, music? The aim of the current study is to find an answer to this question. To achieve this goal, firstly, Arthur Danto’s theory is outlined, and secondly, it is weighed against music. By problematizing the cornerstone of Danto’s theory or the question of indiscernible counterparts, it is ultimately argued that Arthur Danto’s definition of art does not have a capacity to adequately define music, and a solution to this problem is proposed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The exploration and production of polar oil and gas fields, which are technologically challenging due to extreme weather conditions, are also constrained by strong environmental issues. Safe and economical activities in such hostile and fragile regions require very insightful engineering. The presence of sea ice is representing a triple challenge: economical, technological and environmental. This makes the Arctic exploration and production activities complex. Ice Management (IM) is one of the tools that could efficiently assist to develop Arctic reserves. However, for each project that uses IM operations, a preliminary study is required to evaluate the efficiency of these support operations and to estimate the possible extension in the season of operation of a field. Efficiency of an IM philosophy can be estimated in a global view based on the extension in the operability window. In a more detailed view, it can be assessed taking into account the optimal number of icebreakers, the IM patterns, the available time for eventual disconnection, and the floe size reduction (leading to ice load reduction). For this study, we will focus on the ice floe size and loads reduction. The most common approach for physical management of sea ice is the one where icebreakers reduce floe size of the drifting ice upstream the floating platform (ref. Moran et al. [1], Coche et al. [2]). This paper describes this philosophy and demonstrates based on real-time simulation that its benefit is limited to mild ice scenarios such as unidirectional ice drift. A more efficient way to manage sea ice is (1) to identify the most hazardous events (e.g. big ridges); (2) prioritize these events; and (3) deal with them starting by the most hazardous one.

Abstract:
In every production process, as in every control system, there are actuator elements, measurement elements and control elements. Measurement and control are often mixed. The effectiveness of the process or the system depends very much on the proper integration and constructive balance among these functions. For intuitive reasons, most times it is easier to grasp the relevance of the actuator part in a process and more difficult to understand the relevance of the measurement part, or even the control part. That is a reason why metrology is sometimes underestimated. With the scientific conviction of the relevance of metrology for system control, CENAM has developed more than 250 projects with industry in Mexico through the MESURA Program [1,2]. Very relevant results were obtained in many of these projects and the methodology is now applied by a number of Centers, Companies and organizations, both in Mexico and abroad. This methodology has been shared also with National Metrology Institutes of the Interamerican Metrology System (SIM), and has been adopted to some extent by Jamaica, Uruguay, Panama and Colombia [3]. There, an initiative emerged from a private metrology laboratory, Global Metric, to merge the MESURA approach with the productive metrology approach of Kunzmann and Pfeiffer [4]. This approach identifies loses or leaks of profit due to non-optimum metrological practices. It takes into account, as MESURA did, the Taguchi Loss Function [5], and the works of Mader, et al; Rodriguez, et al; Trejo, et al; Usuda, et al and Pendrill [6, 7, 8, 9, 10]. From the combination of these ideas, the purpose has been to analyse key processes in a company, identify opportunities for improvement with metrology and elaborate plans for Metrology Investment Projects (MIP). These MIP should evaluate clearly the technical opportunity to be addressed and translate it into economical data so that could be evaluated as any other investment project in terms of the Return on Investment (ROI) [11], Net Present Value (NPV) [12] or else. The methodology has been also seen as a complement to other improvement techniques as the Theory of Constrictions [13, 14], Re-Engineering [15], Lean Manufacturing [16, 17, 18, 19] and Six Sigma [20, 21]. The paper presents the developed methodology and the synergetic connections of MIP with other improvement philosophies, methodologies and techniques.

Abstract:
Ellman's procedure for detecting thiol moieties has been used to quantify the formation of disulfide bonds. The philosophy here is that DTNB used by Ellman will detect the development of oxidation as a function of time as per temporal decrease of the SH moieties. Recently (Lauwers et al 2016, Cao et al 2021) this technique was used to quantify the oxidation of cysteine and glutathione as function of time. It was reported that, at pH = 6.5, for all cases of cysteine and one case of glutathione studied, the number of thiols became zero in a finite time, tc. Using Smoluchowski equations (a) we pointed out that in milliQ water with cysteine molecules searching randomly to form disulfide bonds, we should find that tc → ∞, and (b) we proposed that cysteine molecules, carrying zero net charge at pH = 6.5, aggregated so that SH groups were ‘hidden’ in the interior thus preventing the detection of thiols by DTNB thus erroneously reporting the number of thiols to be zero after a finite time. This is analogous to the necessity to disrupt the structure of a protein before using Ellman's procedure. We have used atomic scale molecular dynamics to simulate both cysteine and glutathione in milliQ water. The results showed that, instead of being randomly distributed, cysteine does indeed form aggregates as the Smoluchowski equations indicated. We shall present results for glutathione to (i) establish whether this molecule, which is charged at pH = 6.5, forms aggregates, (ii) if aggregates are formed, whether DTNB will be unable to access thiols hidden inside them.

Abstract:
<p>The present paper focuses on the advanced numerical modeling of a novel resilient hinge (RH), with emphasis on the connection between the foundation and the bridge pier. The design philosophy of dynamic resistant structures (such as bridges) requires the imposed energy to be dissipated in the hinges of the structure and let the remain elements with no damages. The investigated Resilient Hinge (RH) was proposed by Mitoulis et al. in 2016 and is further developed in this paper through parametric numerical simulations utilizing the 3D FE software Abaqus. The RH is a novel substructure that mitigates the imposed energy through the yielding of easily replaceable steel bars, thus offering rapid restoration times. It is designed to have re-centering capabilities because several steel bars remain primarily elastic, so they return to their initial position. The investigated variables are the type of material, the roughness of the contact surface, the diameter of the bars and the type of connection between the different parts of the RH. Stress analysis of the obtained results occurred in a way to quantify the problem and discover the weak regions of the RH. Finally, detailed design suggestions for the RH are provided.</p>

Abstract:
The profiling of end walls in turbines has proved to be effective in reducing secondary flows and losses in turbines, both in cascades and in a turbine representative rig. This paper presents a simple method for the design of end walls using the philosophy that the blade (or rather flow) curvature causes the cross passage pressure gradient, so that mirroring the blade curvature on the end-wall should assist in canceling this effect. Three alternative end-wall profiles have been designed based on the camber line of the blades. From a CFD investigation into the effects of these profiles, they should all be effective in reducing the secondary flow within the cascade. The best profile extended upstream and downstream of the blades to attempt to overcome the problems associated with sharp curvature at inlet and exit from the blade row. For the best profile the CFD predicts a 6% reduction in secondary loss and a 61% reduction in secondary kinetic energy. Whilst the loss predictions are not expected to be accurate, the reduction in secondary kinetic energy is likely to be similar to that achieved if the profile were tested experimentally. Experience with testing of an earlier end wall (Hartland et al [1]) suggests that there is likely to be a substantial reduction in secondary loss accompanying this level of reduction in secondary kinetic energy.
