Abstract:
This thesis addressed the three-dimensional Art Gallery Problem (3D-AGP), a version of the art gallery problem, which aims to determine the number of guards required to cover the interior of a pseudo-polyhedron as well as the placement of these guards. This study exclusively focused on the version of the 3D-AGP in which the art gallery is modelled by an orthogonal pseudo-polyhedron, instead of a pseudo-polyhedron. An orthogonal pseudopolyhedron provides a simple yet effective model for an art gallery because of the fact that most real-life buildings and art galleries are largely orthogonal in

Abstract:
In this thesis, we design and develop new approximation algorithms and complexity results for three guarding and partitioning problems on orthogonal polygons; namely, guarding orthogonal polygons using sliding cameras, partitioning orthogonal polygons so as to minimize the stabbing number and guarding orthogonal terrains using vertex guards. We first study a variant of the well-known art gallery problem in which sliding cameras are used to guard the polygon. We consider two versions of this problem: the Minimum- Cardinality Sliding Cameras (MCSC) problem in which we want to guard P with the m

Abstract:
We study a host of geometric optimization problems that are NP-hard and design polynomial time approximation algorithms for them. More precisely, we are given a family of geometric objects and a point set, mostly in the plane, and study different variants and generalizations of Packing and Covering problems. Our objects of study are mostly family of non-piercing regions in the plane. We call a set of simple and connected regions to be non-piercing if for any pair of intersecting regions, A and B both A\B and B\A are connected regions. A set of disks, squares, half-planes are examples of non-pi

Abstract:
Energy consumption of large commercial buildings has become higher than before, and a major part of the energy is on their lighting systems. This thesis aims at reducing the energy consumption of a building's lighting system. Our solution is to minimize the total number of necessary light fixtures in a commercial building, and thus we formulate the Constrained Light Deployment Problem (CLDP). The CLDP problem is tightly related to the Art Gallery Problem (AGP), a classical problem in computational geometry that finds the minimum number of guards to monitor a polygon area.
