Abstract:
The article is devoted to the history of the Moscow magazine “Construction and Decorative Art”, which played a significant role in Russian art criticism in 1903, despite its short (within six months) existence. This topic needs to be addressed due to the small number of comprehensive studies in the field of Russian art criticism of the early 20th century. On the basis of archival materials of censorship, the article reconstructs the creation circumstances of two homogeneous magazines (“Architecture and Decorative Art”, renamed “Free Art”, and “Construction and Decorative Art”) and their actual transformation into one press organ. There is examined the rapprochement of the architects Vasily Borin and Leonid Betelev with the scandalous journalist Alexey Filippov, their struggle for the permission to publish a new Moscow magazine about art in 1900—1902, the patronizing attitude of the Main Directorate for Press Affairs and the Moscow Governor-General to the new initiative of Filippov. The author introduces into scientific circulation important recorded sources related to the transfer of the rights to publish the magazine to Vasily Borin, and his attempt to pass off the former magazine of Filippov and Betelev as his own (hitherto non-existent) magazine “Free Art”. The article analyzes three issues of the illustrated magazine “Construction and Decorative Art” published in 1903. Basing on the data on the magazine’s format and prices, the author concludes that the publication turned out to be expensive and, therefore, unprofitable. The article pays particular attention to the views of Borin and Filippov on the development of contemporary art, Art Nouveau, and the activities of the artists of the group “Mir Iskusstva” (“World of Art”). In the context of a meaningful analysis of the magazine’s articles, there is discussed the honoring of the architect Nikolai Nikitin in connection with his anniversary. The author poses the question of how the issues of “Free Art” at the end of 1903 should be assessed. There are analyzed the causes for the mysterious closure of both the magazines in 1904—1905, which was not formalized in accordance with the law.

Founded in 1976, Art monthly is Britain’s oldest contemporary art magazine. It is impossible, and perhaps even unwise, to try to account for the magazine’s longevity, but a contributing factor may be the high degree of continuity between the past and present that is reflected in the loyalty of Art monthly’s readership and of its writers and regular contributors. This does not mean that the magazine has not changed at all; on the contrary. That Art monthly has adapted and responded to shifts in the art world over the years is reflected, for instance, in the large number of student subscribers to the magazine. However, change has been introduced gradually and in a manner in keeping with the founding ethos of the magazine. This is what is meant by ‘the gentle art of staying the same while changing utterly’ – the subheading for this article, and of the talk on which it is based.

Abstract:
The article examines a number of M.V. Dobuzhinsky’s graphic works published in “Jester”, “The World of Art” and “Apollo” magazines, in comparison with the works of artists in the Munich magazines “Jugend” and “Simplicissimus”. There are revealed the motifs that influenced Dobuzhinsky’s works: the image of pavement and brickwork, the image of a black cat. The author has found that Dobuzhinsky repeated the drawing of the devil by T.T. Heine in a vignette for the magazine “Golden Fleece”. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that, for the first time, it analyzes M.V. Dobuzhinsky’s graphic works published in Russian magazines of the turn of the century, comparing each of them with drawings with similar motifs in the magazines “Jugend” and “Simplicissimus”. The chronological method of analyzing the works of M.V. Dobuzhnisky’s magazine graphics made it possible to reveal the genesis of the image of the city, as well as to clarify the beginning of his appeal to the theme of classicism architecture. In addition, the article introduces into scientific circulation Dobuzhnisky’s drawings for the Petersburg satirical magazine “Jester”. Their chronological analysis in comparison with similar works from the Munich satirical magazines reveals the genesis of the artist’s mastering of Jugendstil drawings in the first year of his autonomous activity. The results obtained demonstrate the influence of woodcuts by Albrecht Dürer on the formation of a unique line in Dobuzhinsky’s drawings. The author concludes that that due to the artist’s appeal to Dürer’s woodcuts, as well as to engravings by Japanese masters, M.V. Dobuzhinsky followed the same path as the masters of the Munich magazine graphics, having developed by the mid-1900s their achievements to a new level in his works.

Focusing on the magazine Silâns, produced by students and tutors Barry Flanagan, Rudy Leenders and Alistair Jackson on the Advanced Sculpture Course at St Martin’s College of Art between 1964 and 1965, this article explores the magazine as a collaborative space for students and tutors alike. Arguing that while the ‘group crit’ or discussion forum at St Martin’s offered students a verbal platform to describe, defend or critique their work (which increasingly relied on concepts and ideas over formal properties), it was the format of the art school magazine that offered a space for discourse and collaboration. By questioning the purpose of art and the role of the artist more generally, Silâns offered a site for critique of a rapidly changing art education system. In doing so, it prefigured later conceptual magazines that encompassed similar territory and preoccupations. I argue that although the content and form of Silâns are now identified in relation to concrete poetry, it is better situated in the context of early text-based conceptual art practice. The emphasis on the magazine as a means to disseminate concrete poetry tacitly avoids any of its political implications, in favour of its formal aspects. In concluding that the importance of Silâns, as an alternative platform for student collaboration and a precursor to later text-based conceptual art practice, has so far been overlooked and confined instead to a footnote in the sculptor Barry Flanagan’s biography, I argue that, more than group crit, this magazine is a manifestation of the verbal impulse in art colleges.

In this article, Tom Sellar, the editor of Theater for sixteen years, reflects on the five-decade legacy of the magazine. Sellar’s personal retrospective looks both backward and forward, from Theater’s polemical beginnings in the late 1960s and his own encounters with the magazine as a student in the 1980s to the political exigencies of the present day and the demands this moment makes on the future of theater and criticism. As Sellar writes, Theater’s early radical spirit has not left the magazine’s mission: “Part muse, part archive, part mirror, Theater has held tightly to … its permanent stance that the theater can provide a vessel for transformation, bringing altered consciousness and maybe a better society.” Tracing this history, Sellar illuminates how Theater, as a journal and a reflection of its object of inquiry, has responded to the evolving idea of a public — a sphere that has narrowed and expanded, fractured and recombined over the past half century.

Fashion magazines contain hidden delights ripe for investigating. One can explore overt content and covert messages in fashion magazine advertising art by probing the periodical and its promotional images for historical or social clues and for the advertiser's manipulative methods. Art librarians can apply and encourage the use of analytical techniques in connection with fashion advertising art from any era or region of the world. The focus here is on a single firm, the Demorest Fashion and Sewing-Machine Company, best known for its paper sewing patterns, and how in a single volume of its monthly magazine it promoted the purchase of fashion goods in connection with a world's fair: the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. Comparing a 19th-century fashion engraving with a related photograph; and viewing a magazine advertisement as a set of repeating patterns according to a 21st-century process, fractal-concept analysis, together yield a trove of information and prompt further ideas for alternate and peripheral lines of inquiry.

Abstract:
The article explores the problem of the explicit reflection of the aesthetic thought in Russian journalism in the early 19th century using the example of the 1806 Lyceum magazine. The study revealed the eclectic nature of the writing style of this period’s authors and demonstrated the need to turn to ancient prototypes. The review of all the articles in the 12 issues of this magazine, identified texts containing direct reminiscences of ancient aesthetics or implicit references to ancient authors in solving aesthetic problems. The study revealed that the aesthetic issue most often discussed on the pages of the Lyceum magazine was the art classification issue. Examples of addressing this problem suggested by the magazine’s authors are compared with the positions of ancient philosophers. The article also discusses a variety of the magazine contributors’ approaches to solving the issue of the origin of art from aesthetic, ethical, and epistemological points of view. The article pays special attention to the direct reminiscences of ancient aesthetics in determining the categories of mimesis, beauty (in all its varieties), and kalokagathia. As a result, it is concluded that there was a significant reception of ancient samples in the texts of Russian authors dealing with aesthetic problems.

In the left-wing magazines of the 1920s and 1930s, the visual art has been analysed from variously emphasised left-wing positions; even though, on the whole, literature seemed to be a more important weapon in the ideological battle. “Laikmets” (“Epoch”) (1923) was the least politicised periodical, advocating active, modern art opposed to stagnant bourgeois traditions, and promoting, for instance, the activism of author Andrejs Kurcijs, which was related to the ideas of the French purism. “Domas” (“Thoughts”) (1912–1915; 1924–1934) was a more long-lived periodical, aspiring to be a sophisticated culture magazine with more elaborate essays, such as Kurcijs’s draft for his publication “On Art” and the article “The Sociology of Creativity” by literary scholar Pēteris Birkerts. The highlights of the magazine “Trauksme” (“Alert”) (1928– 1929) included the statement by poet Pēteris Ķikuts about constructivism being more akin to the expressionists’ depth than to the impressionists’ superficial sliding over the surface of life. In “Signāls” (“Signal”) (1928–1930), a publication which was social- democratic in orientation, Voldemārs Branks wrote about art, inspired by the ideas of Leo Tolstoy and Hippolyte Taine, as well as emphasising the importance of the content and the accessibility of art. On the other hand, magazine “Kreisā Fronte” (“Left Front”) (1928–1930), edited by Linards Laicens, was related to the Russian constructivism by calling for the abandonment of the visual art in the name of producing useful things. The coexistence of modernistic, realistic and utilitarian versions echoed the Russian and European art processes of the time with the rehabilitation of mimetic traditions and ideologically motivated discrediting of the avant-garde. With the establishment of the Latvian authoritarian regime in 1934, the era of the leftist magazines in Latvia, which revealed the controversial attempts to display a more progressive outline of art, came to an end.

What are the possibilities for a political magazine in the new media environment? This article addresses that question through a study of the London-based art and politics magazine Mute, an experimental publishing venture that currently exists as a ‘hybrid’ of Web and print platforms. The politics in question resides not only in the magazine’s content, but throughout its media form. For Mute’s coverage of the evolving political and aesthetic capacities of new media has intersected with an insistent self-critique and remodelling of its magazine form, a reflexive orientation it set out in its ‘hybrid publishing’ manifesto, ‘Ceci n’est pas un magazine’. Drawing on an interview with the magazine’s editor and directors and employing concepts of ‘media ecology’ and ‘embodied text’, the article explores Mute’s hybrid media form through its publishing platforms, participatory mechanisms, aesthetic styles, commissioning practices, temporal modes, and commercial structures.

Abstract:
Our understanding of modern art draws a distinction between the Anglo-American and continental European traditions. These two traditions overlapped in the 1920s and 1930s with the publication of transition magazine, an expatriate American journal based in Paris. Its editor Eugene Jolas was an American raised in Europe who used his little magazine to bring to readers in the United States highlights of literary and other artistic innovations on both sides of the Atlantic. The general purpose of this thesis is to explore the role of transition in the development of modernism from the middle of the 1920s, with an emphasis on the important part played by the magazine in transmitting an international vision of modern art to its English-speaking audience. Chapter One provides a chronological history of transition, framing its story in the context of that which has been written about the perils of producing little magazines. Chapter Two outlines the aesthetic program by which transition came to be edited, exploring whether or not an emphasis on writing prejudiced the presentation of other art forms. Chapter Three examines the issues surrounding translation in transition, and the role of the translator in sharing modern writing across frontiers. Chapter Four explains the importance of James Joyce and Gertrude Stein in transition, outlining the ways in which the former was more appropriate to the program undertaken in the magazine. Chapter Five explores the apolitical foundation of transition, outlining the battles it fought against politically engaged writers between the world wars. Chapter Six assesses the influence of transition in America, tracing the way in which its reception mirrored the general reception of modern art in the United States. Chapter Seven explores the role of the little magazine in the historical writing of modernism, distinguishing between its conservative and avant-gardist impulses.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study I analyse the first year of publication of Loslyf, the first and, at the time of its launch in June 1995, only Afrikaans pornographic magazine. The analysis comprises a historical account of its inception as relayed mainly by Ryk Hattingh, the first editor of Loslyf and primary creative force behind the publication. Such an investigation offers valuable insights into an aspect of South African media history as yet undocumented. As a powerful contributor to an Afrikaans imaginary, emerging at a time of political renewal, Loslyf provides a glimpse into the desires, tensions and tastes of and for an imagined community potentially still shaped by a censorial past. The magazine is worth studying, in part, as an example of an attempt at reinvesting the prescriptive and seemingly generic genre of pornography with cultural specificity and political content, with a view to making it more interesting and relevant. The study argues that whilst Loslyf succeeded in fracturing the “simulacrum” (Baudrillard 1990: 35) of pornographic representation, it also demonstrated that this kind of „alternativity‟ is difficult to sustain. An analysis of the written and visual content of the first 12 issues of the magazine, under Hattingh‟s editorship, investigates the basis of Loslyf‟s status as „alternative‟ publication. I conclude that the first year of Loslyf contributed towards the broader project of democratic expression in an expanding South African visual economy, as a simultaneously well considered and underrated (at the time of its publication at least) cultural product.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie studie analiseer ek die eerste jaar van publikasie van Loslyf as 'n baanbrekende en, in die tyd van sy ontstaan in Junie 1995, die enigste Afrikaanse pornografiese tydskrif. Hierdie analise behels ʼn historiese oorsig van die ontstaan van Loslyf soos hoofsaaklik verhaal deur Ryk Hattingh, die eerste redakteur van Loslyf en primêre kreatiewe mag agter die publikasie. So ʼn ondersoek bied waardevolle insig tot ʼn ongedokumenteerde aspek van Suid-Afrikaanse mediageskiedenis. As ʼn kultuurproduk wat ʼn kragtige bydrae gelewer het tot die Afrikaanse samelewing in ʼn tyd van politieke hernuwing, bied Loslyf ʼn weerkaatsing van die begeertes, spanninge en smake vir en van hierdie gemeenskap – begeertes en smake wat grootendeels gevorm is deur ʼn geskiedenis van sensuur. Dit is waardevol om die tydskrif te bestudeer as voorbeeld van 'n poging om die voorskriftelike en skynbaar generiese pornografiese genre met kulturele bepaaldheid en politiese inhoud te herbelê, ten einde hierdie genre meer interessant en relevant te maak. Our research aims to analyze one of the most important magazines of the twentieth century: Time Magazine. The investigations focus on the discourse of reports that emphasized the worry and discomfort of the magazine with the communist threat that hung over Brazil between the years 1958 and 1961, a moment that covers the path of the rise and output power of former President Quadros. We argue that the ideology of the magazine, known worldwide as the "American Century" - created by its owner Henry Luce - was being confronted in Latin America, particularly in Brazil, by the advance of communism and anti-American demonstrations promoted that context. Thus, Time Magazine, through their reporting on Brazil during the administration of Quadros, presented an analytical discourse about our culture, politics and economy as "risky" to U.S. interests. Such risks were related to Time Magazine troubled administration Quadros, according TIME: an eccentric. The title of this thesis "Wherefore Art Thou, Jânio?" (Why thou Jânio?), Inspired by one of his reports, research illustrates that the TIME Magazine 'organized around the personality of Quadros. Several terms, mostly pejorative, were being attributed to each offense he performed against the presence and U.S. intervention in Latin America
Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar uma das mais importantes revistas do século XX: a Time Magazine. As investigações estão concentradas no discurso das reportagens que realçavam a preocupação da revista com a ameaça comunista que pairava sobre o Brasil entre os anos de 1958 e 1961, período que abrange a ascensão e a saída do poder do ex-presidente Jânio Quadros. Defendemos que o ideário da revista, mundialmente conhecido como Século Americano - criado pelo seu proprietário Henry Luce - estava sendo confrontado na América Latina, em particular no Brasil, pelo avanço do comunismo e das manifestações antiamericanas promovidas naquele contexto. Desse modo, a Time Magazine, por meio de suas reportagens sobre o Brasil durante a gestão de Jânio Quadros, apresentava um discurso analítico a respeito de nossa cultura, política e economia como arriscados aos interesses norte-americanos. The thesis examines the activities of Cahiers d’Art as a magazine, gallery and publishing house active in Paris from 1926 to 1960 with special attention, and without particular regards to biography, to the intellectual development of its founder Christian Zervos from his early years in Alexandria at the beginning of the century to his professional establishment in the French capital. Its originality resides in the presentation of a significant corpus of unpublished archival information and the examination of the role that the network centred around Cahiers d’Art played in the institutionalisation of independent art in the first half of the century, the propagation of abstraction through the popularisation of European primitivism which was presented as a direct link to the modern era, and the passage from the Mechanist to the Atomic Age, its effects in the artistic domain and the ideological connotations it encased. The overall analysis focuses on particular transitional phenomena that marked the course of the 20th century. Particularly, the passage from analysis to synthesis which found diverse expressions in the contemporary artistic discourse since the beginning of the century giving birth to an increased interest in pragmatist approaches to art and architecture, social engagement, and a course towards formal simplification. The thesis observes the way in which the medieval and the primitive past contributed to the consecration of the international School of Paris and the conflicts of interest of their exponents. It furthermore pays close attention to Zervos’ position-taking with regards to these conflicts, his disdain for antiquity, its aftermath in western art, and the way that these positions affected his presentation of Picasso’s work in the voluminous catalogue raisonné of the artist’s work. Finally, it seeks to re-appreciate from the perspective of Cahiers d’Art, a significantly influential network of worldwide reputation, issues associated with the consecration and popularisation of international independent art in France and abroad, as well as the conflicting aspirations for decentralisation in a context dominated by Eurocentric attitudes and the formal and ideological projections of post Wold War Two liberal critique.

AbstractThis chapter examines the rise of literary advice in Anglo-American periodical culture from 1884 to 1895. Capitalizing on a moment when fiction became both more self-consciously artistic and more potentially lucrative, literary advice of this era addressed the full range of literary practice and the attendant practical activities that made it possible. The chapter resituates the landmark “Art of Fiction” debate (1884)—an event crucially sponsored by the magazines—as the opening of an era of practical discussion that was soon after taken up in trade journals devoted specifically to authorship. The practical advice dispensed by these journals—including tools, tricks, tips, and gossip—focuses on the form of the short story, creating a loop with a form that was itself a magazine staple. This interactive looping is considered in the conclusion, where the chapter examines a systematic course in literary art offered by Atalanta, a late-Victorian “Girl’s Magazine.”

It has been ten years since the concept of the Publication Platform has been published in the special edition of the Scope Journal ISSN (online version; 1177-5661). The term ‘Publication Platform’ was introduced in the Practice Report, The Site of Publication in Contemporary Practice. This article surveyed a series of publication projects analysing distinctive editorial models as venues for discussion, collaboration, presentation of practice, and reflection. In this context, the term Publication Platform is employed to describe a space for a series of distinctive editorial modes. The platform considers printed matter as a venue for a diversity of discourse and dissemination of ideas, expanding the meaning and boundaries of printed media through a spectrum of publishing scenarios. The Publication Platform positions printed spaces as sites to reflect on editorial frameworks, content, design practices, and collaborative methodologies. One of the central ideas to the report was the role of collaboration to lead content, examining how creative relationships and media production partnership, affect editorial practice and design outcomes. Ten years after, the Publication Platform has evolved and renewed with emergent publishing projects to incorporate a spectrum of practice responsive to community, experimentation, interdisciplinarity, critical wiring, creativity, cultural production, contemporary arts, and craft-led discourse. This paper presents a case study of ‘Threaded Magazine’ as an editorial project and the role of its culturally connected approach. This study uses the term ‘culturally connected approach’ to frame how Threaded Magazine embodies, as a guiding underlying foundation for each issue, the three principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi: Participation, Protection and Partnership. This presentation reflects on how these principals connect to who Threaded Magazine are collectively as editors and designers, and determined by who we associate with, partner, and collaborate with. A key factor that influenced Threaded Magazine to adopt a more culturally connected approach arose by the invitation to participate in the international publication entitled Project 16/2, commissioned by Fedrigoni Papers for the Frankfurt Bookfair, in Germany. The Project 16/2 created an opportunity for a process of editorial self-discovery. This trajectory translated the tradition of oral storytelling into graphic language, conveying the essence (te ihi) of who we were. The visuality and tactility of the printed media set a format for Threaded Magazine to focus on Aotearoa’s cultural heritage, original traditions, and narratives. This paper overviews the introduction of a kaupapa for Issue 20, the ‘New Beginnings’ edition and process of adhering to tikanga Māori and Mātauranga Māori while establishing a particular editorial kawa (protocol) for the publication. The influence and collaboration with cultural advisory rōpū (group) Ngā Aho, kaumātua and kuia (advisors) will elaborate on the principle of participation. Issue 20 connected Threaded Magazine professionally, spiritually, physically, and culturally with the unique identity and landscape of Indigenous practitioners at the forefront of mahi toi (Māori Contemporary art) across Aotearoa. Special Edition, Issue 21, in development, continues to advance a culturally connected approach working with whānau, kaiwhatu (weavers), tohunga whakairo (carvers), kaumātua and kuia to explore cultural narratives, connections, visually through an editorial framework.

Health is a most common topic discussed in women magazine ranking from fashion to beauty, sexuality to art and culture. Biological health, mental health, fertility and sexual health are the most common topics which are given wide coverage. Whether this news, having quantitatively audience, is qualitatively health news is the primarily problem. The most of the news deals with particular subject such as medical selling, aesthetic advertisement and prototypes imposed on popular life. A large number of news reaching the audience read for health purposes cannot go beyond triggering the consumption culture. That is the starting point of this study. The study limited to 52 issues of Cosmopolitan Turkey published between June 2014- September 2018 analyses Dr. Cosmo, which falls into the health news category. In this study, content analysis is used to examine to what extent the news qualitatively and quantitatively contributes to medicine journalism. At the end of the study, it is found that the most of the health news is published on the purposes of commercial concerns, consolidates aesthetic perception and generally stuck between certain topics.

One of the important magazines of the Second Constitutional period was the magazine Şehbâl, which was published between 14 March 1909 and 14 July 1914. Political events and comments in Şehbâl magazine; culture, literature, music; painting, sculpture, architecture; health,sport; inventions and inventions, discoveries, accounting, humor, fashion, make-up, embroidery, housework; articles on many subjects such as information about new publications and selections from English, French, German and American magazines have been published. Another important feature of Şehbâl magazine is that it organizes competitions on various subjects. One of these competitions organized by the Magazine is The Competition to Find an Equal to The Twelve Foreign Words In this competition, it was requested to find the equivalents of the words bibliographie, boycottage, caprice, caricature, clup, conference, concert, decor, monologue, paradoxe, surprise, taximetre. Various words were suggested to this competition by 517 people. However, none of the suggested words are used in standard Turkey Turkish instead of the desired word. However, this competition is important in terms of showing the influence of foreign languages on Turkish and the awareness and resistance shown against this influence. A prominent figure in the field of satirical graphics in the Republic of Moldova, Nicolae Macarenco, throughout his artistic career, conceived with great skill and dedication book illustrations for literary works signed by Aureliu Busuioc, Evgeniy Kopylov, Iosif Gherasimov, Alla Grekul, posters and aesthetically expressive and semantically valuable caricatures. Prodigious, talented, persevering and devoted to his profession, the protagonist is one of the established artists who, through his vocation and talent, marked an entire era in the satirical art of the Republic. Working successfully, especially in the genres of satirical-humorous graphics, the graphic designer gave birth to works that were frequently published in important periodicals such as the satire and humor magazine Chipăruş, the magazine Femeia Moldovei, the newspaper Tinerimea Moldovei and others. The study highlights both the thematic aspects of the artist’s creation and the determined, systematized, mirrored artistic options of the protagonist. Having examined the artist’s works, the author pays increased attention to problems of compositional image, the particularities of plastic representation through shape, line, tone of human characters, psychological states of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic characters. At the same time, the analytical approach is supported by highlighting the role of color in the process of amplifying expressions and messages generated by satirical works created by the graphic artist.

“… A good archaeological report not only informs us about the strata from which findings originate, but also gives an account of the strata which first had to be broken through.” (Walter Benjamin. Excavation and Memory, ca. 1932. Analog materials are fundamental to my research. As part of my art practice, I tear, cut, rip, fold, and glue together printed images of the masculine performance and the male body to un-masc and reveal its fragility. During the making process what’s usually left behind is a jumble of non-representational refuse—mainly text, backgrounds, and devices used on a page, in a magazine or a book. During the first New Zealand COVID lockdown in 2020, I had limited access to new collage material, apart from a few books left behind in the car. As a result, my attention shifted to the leftovers which otherwise ended up in the recycle bin. These discarded bits illustrated a gendered language, because the material I use was intended for a male audience. It endorsed muscle, size, competing, violence, and whatever else you might expect from the fiction, advertisement, and revealing pages that promote so-called ‘maleness’, like film annuals, muscle magazines, sports, and printed adult magazines among others. Some of these books were donated, many reclaimed from opportunity and recycle shops as they were withdrawn from personal, public, and university libraries. Almost all the book covers used in the project had their own stories imprinted on both sides. These “marks” revealed their origins, recounted their lives, and relayed the strain they had to endure from countless readers, and of course myself! By incorporating printed words from a visual discourse, these new collages demand a reconsideration of text and meaning— they hint, but at the same time complicate the textual decoding process. Sourced from the refuse of a printed culture, these works attempt to reconstruct material and visual culture— a culture consumed by attention seeking and power. They focus on their own materiality, and at the same time, attempt to disrupt order, and reveal their embedded meaning. They reconfigure meaning to recount and re-present themselves. Resurrected, these assembled works are aching to go back to the library shelf and re-enter circulation in a new format. –– “Hard Working Covers” is an ongoing project which brings together 90 one-off handmade analog collages on hardbound book covers and compile them in 300 limited edition concertina books. The foldout format of the publication will reveal not only the front of the works, but also their back(sides).

The exceptional versatility of Zervos’s mind had allowed him to realize, through Cahiers d’art, a intellectual environment that exceeded the ordinary publishing house of that period, beacuse it was enchanted and nourished by all sector of knowledge. Zeros, inside the Cahiers d’art, made Le Corbusier protagonist of the section of Architecture, that submits to Sigfried Giedion. In fact since the first number of Cahiers d’art the work of Le Corbusier was broadly taken in examination. The articles related to the work of the Architect have gone since 1926 to 1954; the themes that touch these texts can be separate in four major topics: design, private house, great public buildings, painting. La recherche a le but de relever l’importance de Christian Zervos (Argostoli 1889-Parigi 1970), historien de l’art et fondateur des Éditions Cahiers d’art, qui vécut à Paris depuis 1907 à sa mort, et Le Corbusier, insérée dans le contexte de Cahiers d’art. L’exceptionnel éclectisme de Zervos a permis de réaliser dans Cahiers d’art un excellent milieu intellectuell qu’il va au-delà des Éditions, car uni et nourri par chaque domaine de la connaissance. Abstract:
One of the leading Western Ukrainian diaspora journals – London «Liberation Way», founded in January 1949, has become the subject of the study for the first time in journalism. Archival documents and materials of the Ukrainian Publishing Union in London and the British National Library (British Library) were also observed. The peculiarities of the magazine’s formation and the specifics of the editorial policy, founders and publishers are clarified. A group of OUN members who survived Hitler’s concentration camps and ended up in Great Britain after the end of World War II initiated the foundation of the magazine. Until April 1951, including issue 42, the Board of Foreign Parts of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists were the publishers of the magazine. From 1951 to the beginning of 2000 it was a socio-political monthly of the Ukrainian Publishing Union. From the mid-60’s of the twentieth century – a socio-political and scientific-literary monthly. In analyzing the programmatic principles of the magazine, the most acute issues of the Ukrainian national liberation movement, which have long separated the forces of Ukrainian emigration and from which the founders and publishers of the magazine from the beginning had clearly defined positions, namely: ideology of Ukrainian nationalism, the idea of ​​unity of Ukraine and Ukrainians, internal inter-party struggle among Ukrainian emigrants have been singled out. The review and systematization of the thematic palette of the magazine’s publications makes it possible to distinguish the following main semantic accents: the formation of the nationalist movement in exile; historical Ukrainian themes; the situation in sub-Soviet Ukraine; the problem of the unity of Ukrainians in the Western diaspora; mission and tasks of Ukrainian emigration in the context of its responsibilities to the Motherland. It also particularizes the peculiarities of the formation of the author’s assets of the magazine and its place in the history of Ukrainian national journalism.

Abstract:
For the first time, one of the popular children’s magazines of the Western Ukrainian Diaspora “Young Friends” became the subject of research. Founded in March 1955, it ceased to exist in 1984. There is no complete filing of this newspaper in any book collection of Ukraine, it has not been digitized yet, the editorial office did not have a site. For this reason, the author conducted a study of this journal in the library-archive of the Union of Ukrainians in Great Britain (UUB) in London. The peculiarities of journal formation and the specifics of the editorial policy are clarified. The experience of publishing a Ukrainian children’s magazine abroad for a long time (in color and on chalk paper) without any financial support from the state, but only by public money, is quite instructive for the current situation in Ukraine when children’s periodicals have almost disappeared from the national information space due to indifferent contemplation of the state.

In this article considered Journalistic and editorial activity of Volodymyr Lenika (14.06.1922–02.11.2005) – one of the leading figures of Ukrainian emigration in Germany. First outlined basic landmarks of his life and creation. Journalistic and editorial activity of Volodymyr Lenik was during to forty years out of Ukraine. In the conditions of emigration politically zaangazhovani Ukrainians counted on temporality of the stay abroad and prepared to transference of the created charts and instituciy on native lands. It was or by not main part of conception of liberation revolution of elaborate OUN under the direction of Stepan Banderi, and successfully incarnated in post-war years. Volodymyr Lenik, executing responsible commissions Organization, proved on a few directions of activity, which were organically combined with his journalistic and editorial work. As an editor he was promotorom of creation and realization of models of magazines «Avangard», «Krylati», «Znannia», «Freie Presse Korespondenz», newspapers «Shliakh peremogy». As a journalist Volodymyr Lenik left ponderable work, considerable part of which entered in two-volume edition «Ukrainians on strange land, or reporting, from long journeys». Subject of him newspaper-magazine publications directed on illumination of school, youth, student, cultural, scientific problems, organization and activity of emigrant structures, political fight of emigration, to dethronement of the antiukrainskikh Moscow diversions and provocations. Such variety of problematic of works of V. Lenika was directed in the river-bed of retaining of revolutionary temperament in the environment of diaspore, to bringing in of it to activity in public and political life. Problematic of him is systematized publicism and journalistic appearances, which was inferior realization of a few important tasks, namely to the fight for Ukrainian independence in new terms, cherishing and maintainance of national identity, counteraction hostile soviet propaganda. On an example headed Volodymyr Lenikom a magazine «Knowledge» some aspects are exposed him editorial trade.

Abstract:
In the article according to the theory of the subject, patterns of the existence and genesis of the subject of “Vogue” and “Harper’s Bazaar” (USA) magazines was analysed, perspective of the emergence of new subjects was established, classification of the current subjects into universal and synthetic was suggested and some regularities of authorial creation of new subjects was examined. The main objective of the study is to identify patterns of existence of actual and formation of new topics in the Means of Mass Communication on the example of “Vogue” and “Harper’s Bazaar” magazines. In studying of the empiric basis of the research the method of observation is applied; in finding common themes for both publications – a comparative method was used. The method of analysis was used in the decomposition of topics into separate topics; in isolation from the features of the topic, uncharacteristic of a journalistic work – abstraction was applied. The elucidation that the subject appears as a formal verbal expression of a set of homogeneous topics was done by applying the method of formalization. The main results of the research are: obtaining the new classification of topics of “Vogue” and “Harper’s Bazaar” magazines; identification of a significant manifestation of universal themes on the pages of publications; establishment of the basic subjective (deontological) bases of formation of new subjects. A theoretical level of their knowledge will enrich science, equip practice, promote individual and world harmony.

The subject of the study is the ideological, financial, economic and socio-social conditions of the publishing house and the editorial board of the magazine “New Pathway” Winnipeg period 1941-1977. The main objectives is to determine the peculiarities of the conditions of publishing a Ukrainian magazine in exile, which provides for the systematization and introduction into scientific circulation of factual material on creative and material activities of the “New Pathway” and socio-political environment that influenced the information and ideological and business policy of the publication. The basis of the research methodology is axiological, cultural, systemic approaches; methods of historicism, analysis, synthesis, generalization were used. The study provides not only a description of the historical path of the publication in this period, but also the reasons for miscalculations and successes, both financial and economic and socio-political, which allowed not only to stay in the information field and market for more than ninety years, technical circumstances of its existence, the political struggle in the new wave of emigration after World War II, changes in demographic and linguistic situation among the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada. The reasons for the situational increase and decrease in the activity of the publication’s subscribers were identified; the mechanisms of expanding the readership, attracting new readers and authors are analyzed; confirmed that the efforts of editors and directors of the publishing house at the initial stage of the Winnipeg period created and strengthened the material and technical base of the publishing house, conducted advertising campaigns and direct work to attract new subscribers and readers; The significance of the study is that for the first time in Ukraine the information about the Winnipeg period of the Ukrainian-Canadian weekly “New Pathway”, its financial and financial problems and creative and editorial successes was analyzed and summarized, thus filling another page in the history of Ukrainian diaspora periodicals.

Condition being studied: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent challenges in social interaction, speech, nonverbal communication, and repetitive/restrictive behavior. Eligibility criteria: Children from the MENA region diagnosed with ASD, of both genders, ages 2-19 years. Outcomes reporting either anthropometrics, serum nutrient levels, nutrient intakes, and/or feeding behaviors. Other inclusion criteria include the availability of full-length published articles in either English or Arabic. Articles presented in conferences, magazines, or newspapers are excluded. Abstract:
The study analyzes the traditional media during 2013-2021 and draws attention to a number of factors, factors of economic and global nature in the historical context, which affect the general state of the media market in Ukraine. The main goal is to outline the peculiarities of the development of the print media market in modern conditions and challenges. The study uses socio-communicative and axiological approaches, methods of content analysis, synthesis and general are the main methods that were used in the research process. In addition to catalysts for abrupt changes in the print media market of Ukraine, factors have been identified that significantly affect the development trends of the general media market: digitalization, destruction of logistics, periodicals, outflow of advertisers from traditional media (television, radio, newspapers and magazines). There are already forecasts that due to the increase in the price of paper on the world market there will be an increase in prices for printed products by 40%), the lack of a culture of consumption of subscription information, as there is a free alternative (social networks, search engines). Results/findings and conclusions of my research: a set of three crisis periods, as a result of which the factors identified in the study are the main characteristics of the development of the modern print media market in Ukraine. The print media market, due to the global situation through COVID-19, is going through difficult times. In fact, the prospect for further scientific research may be the study of the financial component of the Ukrainian media market in the context of general world trends.
