This thesis explores the ways in which the production and comprehension of drawn narratives are structured by metaphorical conceptualisation. The argument develops from the observation that metaphor theory does not account for the perceptual character of depiction. I begin by focusing on an overlooked distinction between "pictures that are metaphors" and "pictures that have metaphors as their textual content" made by Richard Wollheim. This paper will explore classical and contemporary methods of painting applied to the portrait. It will emphasize the metaphor of paint as flesh and the connotations of the breakdown of the painted form that stands in for flesh as it relates to our preoccupations with our own mortality. Borrowing from influences like Lucian Freud, Jenny Saville, and Francis Bacon, the artwork explores the creation of a form that is physical and confrontational, and is intended to provoke a psychological response in the viewer. Critics have considered the work of Mark Tansey either simplistic or accessible only to viewers with extensive art historical backgrounds. His paintings hang in the best museums of the world, from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to the Museum Moderner Kunst, Vienna. However, an inherent conflict arises. For critics, Tansey must be either accessible or inaccessible, and not both. Yet, Tansey's paintings operate precisely on this edge between the extraordinarily simple and the overwhelmingly complex. Drawing inspiration from Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, this project seeks to incorporate the oxymetaphor, digital photography and photo manipulation into considerations of Heaven, Hell and Purgatory. By considering the potential of an earthly site of transition (the cemetery) in relation to Dante's divine spaces, these images consider certain contradictions existing between the cemetery as a manifestation of waiting, permanence, and decay, and its associations with temporality and transition.
