As nursing education and clinical practice begin to embrace more than the natural, physical, and social sciences, art can function as a shortcut to insight and empathy. Paintings wordlessly illustrate the artist's response to illness, disability, death, and healing. They can serve as useful teaching tools and maps of subjective experience for psychiatric nurses. This article discusses the question of whether, as is often claimed, nursing is properly described as an art. Following critical remarks on the claims of Carper, Chinn and Watson, and Johnson, the account of art provided by RG Collingwood is described, with particular reference to his influential distinction between art and craft. The question of whether nursing is best described as an art or a craft is then discussed. The conclusion is advanced that nursing cannot properly be described as an art, given acceptance of Collingwood’s influential definition of art. Moreover, it is shown that, due

There is wide agreement that nursing practice is a combination of art and science. While the science is easily found in nursing education, research, and practice, the art is overshadowed. Philosophical and theoretical discussions on the art of nursing are plentiful, but research demonstrating its importance to nursing practice is lacking. In this article, the nature of nursing is explored separate from science, and a comprehensive exploration of the literature on the art of nursing is presented. Three themes concerning the art of nursing are identified and discussed, including implications for

Nurses were asked to describe experiences about the art of nursing from their own nursing practice. This study was qualitative in nature and used a phenomenological approach to answer the research question, “What is the experience of the art of nursing in nursing practice?” The study was guided by the philosophical stance of Merleau-Ponty and the research strategies of Thomas and Pollio. The nursing profession can be characterised as a unique blend of attributes and philosophies that encompass scientific knowledge and artistic process. The interpersonal experience of caring in nursing is associated with a positivist sense of expression, acute observation, and compassion.
