Abstract:
This thesis examines the way in which Sir Dudley Carleton, ambassador first to Venice and subsequently to The Hague, used paintings, sculptures and other artefacts as the means to secure patrons at the English Court and thereby gain promotion. Carleton had not wanted to go to Venice, and when he arrived there in 1610 he showed no interest in the arts. It was the deaths of the Earl of Salisbury and Prince Henry in 1612 which made him aware of the need to obtain new patrons. By this time he was becoming conscious of the fact that works of art were useful tools in securing patronage, but it was n

While planners and politicians alike go about kicking the tires of various trains, and traveling abroad on fact-finding missions about HSR, the question remains whether Americans will patronize high-speed rail in sufficient number to justify the investment. A common practice is to identify an existing or abandoned rail line as the candidate route that connects population centers, identify the former stations for rehabilitation, select a technology, and then perform an investment-grade ridership study to determine whether sufficient revenues will be generated. This approach may prove sufficient

Higher education is co-financed by the state, municipalities, as well as various local and international funds, but the support of individuals and businesses, known as patronage, is playing an increasingly important part. Here, the contributions of alumni are of a great consequence, ranging from cash donations, in-kind donations, volunteering and pro bono contributions. To receive these diverse donations, universities must work diligently on their communications strategy with alumni, current and potential patrons. This strategy should be diversified on the basis of age, gender and wealth. Succ

The common model for engineers’ engagement in philanthropic development work is to find a community with a technical need, design the solution, raise funds for the solution, construct the solution, and hand the solution over to the community. While this approach has yielded many completed projects around the world, there are limits to the efficacy, sustainability, and long-term enabling potential to this approach.
