Abstract:

Abstract:
This work focuses on linguistic statement in its real operation and context of production in the classroom. It is based on the Brazilian Curricular Parameters for Portuguese Language, which points that the most important teachers activity should be to create situations in which students can work on their own languages. In this perspective, we try to develop a new methodological procedure, the Theater Games, to mobilize elementary level students to operate their own language through the productions of oral and written linguistic statements. This way, we aim to develop didactic activities, which can promote the integration between language and Art in the teaching of argumentation skills. It is done through the correlation between the verbal and written linguistic statements and the theatrical language. The Theater Games are known as a method of training actors that was developed by Viola Spolin. It can also be used at school. Our theoretical background is based on a multidisciplinary vision of language according to Linguistic, Philosophy and Psychology. In addition is Bakhtins sociointeractionist principle of language (1992 [1929]), the perspective of Conversation Analysis, according to Kerbrat-Orecchioni (1990), the rhetoric-argumentative theories, from Amossy (2007), and Goodwin`s studies (2003) and the new gestural science. The applied activities allow us to observe the integration between language and Art as a result, in view of peoples interactions with and through language

Abstract: This dissertation concerns the ways that science and art are responsible for the creation of politics that have an effect on bodies, times and subjects. Science is discussed in so much as it mobilizes and is mobilized in a politics of identity, taking as a point of departure the topic of race and racism in Brazil; and the strategies adopted by the forces of power responsible for putting these topics under dispute. Within science, a black identity, is constructed with scientific evidence, which is then used in an effort to denounce and combat inequality. A reaction will come on the configuration of a Homo brasilis which becomes miscegenated, by way of genetically mapping the nature of Brazilian society and giving only scientists access. This strategy is also used to depoliticize the debate. This work proposes that in spite of these controversies, everyone is becoming entangled along lines of a skin-face- DNA apparatus which is being determined by scientific theories, identities and by a politics of representation, which assume that the body is an organic and visible reality that should be used as the parameter of judgment and the means for certifying the authenticity of identities. Is it possible to operate a political resistance from within skin-face-DNA apparatus? Moving away from a scientific perspective, this work will use art as yet another force. The concept of "historical romance," such as that used in the literature of Toni Morrison, will be explored because it proposes a tension between that which is real and that which is fiction, allowing us to problematize the representation and the notion of authenticity and certification. Furthermore, song and the universe of music will be taken into consideration as a form of political resistance that cut identification. Literature and music will be evoked as a way of breaking open the concepts of representation, history, truth, politics, identity and difference, emptying them of the fixed meanings that the skin-face-DNA apparatus tries to prescribe them with. In order to think in a more general way about the relationship between language and life, this thesis creates conditions in which science and art will be seen as two forms of politics that are both distinct and connected

GU.
Within the generative theory of principles and parameters (Chomsky, 1981), empty categories are entities used in syntactic analyses so that certain language structures do not violate universal principles (Mioto, 2007). Brazilian Portuguese (BP) makes use of several of these categories in different structures, and one of the structures allowed by the language is the phenomenon known as object drop, or phonetically null objects. In studies of Second Language Acquisition (SLA), the theory of Full Transfer / Full Access (Schwartz & Sprouse, 1996) posits that the initial stage of the L2 is the final stage of the L1, but in finding structures that are not allowed by the L1 syntax, learners access the UG to reset parameters related to these structures. Considering BP is often learned after another additional language, hence being an L3, the Typological Primacy Model (TPM) proposed by Rothman (2010) claims that transfer will occur from the grammar of the language perceived as the most similar, even if transfer from another language would be more facilitative. The present study contains results of an acceptability judgment task with different structures in BP given to both Native speakers (n = 27) and BP learners (L1 Spanish, L2 English)(n = 15). It was expected that, because BP and Spanish are perceived as typologically closer, BP learners would transfer their knowledge from the L1 while evaluating the sentences in BP. The results show that Native speakers have different evaluations depending on the structure being tested, with null objects being preferred in Simple clauses, but no clear preference in structures with strong syntactic islands. The BP learners did not show any clear preference for null or overt objects in structures with strong syntactic islands, but showed preference for null objects in Simple clauses with [? definite] referents. Assuming FT/FA and the TPM, it seems that BP learners kept using the grammar from their L1 in evaluating some of the structures, while in other structures there seems to be some convergence on the target grammar, hinting at some level of access to UG.

This dissertation aims to broaden relevance theory scope in order to account for emotions in communication, evaluating its descriptive-explanatory potential. This work consists of three independent chapters, and each one of them comprehends one research question and its corresponding hypothesis. The first chapter provides the basis for the arguments developed in the subsequent chapters. It explores the study of emotion in philosophy of language and in neuroscience. The second chapter develops Sperber and Wilson?s (1986/1995, 2015) relevance theory in order to argue for a broader pragmatics, which involves both verbal and non-verbal behaviours (in line with Wharton, 2009). The focus was mainly on how natural behaviours, such as facial expressions and prosody, convey emotions. The third and last chapter reorganise relevance theory in order to explain emotional communication. It is proposed the existence of two levels of communication: a propositional one and an emotional one, both relevance-driven. I finally argue that non-verbal behaviours, words and descriptions of emotion and loose uses of language encode emotionalreading procedures that help guide the comprehension process in order to yield cognitive-affective effects. This work seeks to provide theoretical improvements to relevance theory so it can explain the language of emotion.

The present research has as its study object the production process in the pictorial development. Through a phenomenological approach, we find instruments that assist us in thinking the process of production of painting. As a case study for our research we chose the work of the São Paulo s artist Fábio Miguez in the period between 1983 and 2000. We consider that the work of this artist constitutes a suitable sampling to allow the investigation of questions of the production process, due to strength of his painting work. We intend, therefore, to perceive and analyze the elements that compose the pictorial language, going through questions as: the formal character of the work, the materials used, the aspects referring to the formativity and poetics, the perception, the subjectivity and intention of the artist, among others. The work of Fábio Miguez was the propeller to reflect on the production process. In Pareyson we find subsidies to think the formative process, where we learn that the work guides and is guided by its proper process of creation; the choice of the material and its unfoldings. With Merleau-Ponty it was possible to solidify reflections on time, something inherent to the pictorial activity, as much for the materiality of the painting as to the formalization of an idea. The perception of the work in its conception will be guided by Merleau-Ponty. In Heidegger we find support to think the character of thing of the work of art and the relation between this e its being-creator, the artist. We present a historical briefing of the creative process emphasizing characteristics and recurrences in its different phases with the intention of placing its work in the Brazilian contemporary art context. Besides the bibliographical the research was based on live and semi-structured

Finalmente, o terceiro cap?tulo constr?i uma an?lise detalhada de poemas selecionados de cinco cole??es diferentes: State of Justice (1977), The Strange Museum (1980) Liberty Tree (1983), Fivemiletown (1987) e The Wind Dog (1999). A primeira parte analisa poesia e pol?tica, a segunda investiga poesia e hist?ria, e o terceiro subcap?tulo examina poesia e linguagem.
This dissertation examines contemporary Northern Irish Literature written in English with the help of the theoretical approach of Irish Studies. It aims to introduce and make a critique of poetry written by Tom Paulin, a contemporary British poet who is regarded one of the major Protestant Irish writers to emerge from Ulster province. The thread pursued in this analysis relates to an investigation of how ideological discourses and the issues of identity are represented in the poet s work. The author s critical evaluation of existing ideologies and identities and his attempt to respond to them will also be analyzed. To perform this analysis, this dissertation is divided into three chapters. The first chapter presents an account of historical events in Ireland from its conquest to the present focusing in Northern Ireland after partition by the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1922. The second chapter is dedicated to a reflection on the establishment of Irish national literature written in English and its close relation to Irish social and political history. Finally, the third chapter is dedicated to a detailed analysis of selected poems from five different collections: State of Justice (1977), The Strange Museum (1980) Liberty Tree (1983), Fivemiletown (1987) and The Wind Dog (1999). In order to investigate the issues of identity and ideology, this chapter is divided in three sections according to three important recurring themes. The first section analyzes poetry and politics; the second investigates poetry and history and the third evaluates poetry and Language. Among the authors consulted to form the basis of the discussion are Terry Eagleton, Edward Said, Seamus Deane, Elmer Andrews, Norman Vance, Peter MacDonald, Sara Broom, Patr?cia Craig, Neil Corcoran, and John Goodby. Most of them belong to this specific line of Postcolonial literature that is called Irish Studies.

From Assinalations to Exile: Investigations between Art and Subjectivity is a reflection about the building process of the artworks from the series SORTERRO and EXILE. These artworks used fur and hair as physical and conceptual matter, and, after these elements, started a process of investigations that would seek to bring to light the intricacies of the creation process. The has investigation initiated with the contact with some previous artworks that the element hair could have been found. After that, a series of themes crossed the pathway taken. Among them, issues related to body, to life and death, to desires, to trauma, to biography, to fortuity, to fear, to eroticism, to animalism, to perversion, to sublimation and to the language appeared. Among the most visited authors, there are: Georges Bataille, Jacques Derrida and Gilles Deleuze

Learning a language is not just knowing its vocabulary, grammar and phonology. These are undoubtedly important aspects of language. On the other hand, in order to be able to communicate efficiently the learner also needs to be familiar with the pragmatic aspects of language. Bearing this in mind, we will propose an analysis of two texts (one literary and other political). We will discuss Rhetoric considering it a subarea of Pragmatics and analyze its theoretical issues and application. Afterwards we will compare it to Speech Act and Conversational Implicature theories. The aim of this research is, then, to compare both theories and check if it is possible to work with both in the same analysis as complementary tools to promote a more complete analysis of texts and speeches. With the final considerations we intend to suggest for English as Additional Language (EAL) teaching, as well as for first language teaching, strategies aspiring to promote pragmatic awareness raising skills among students, being included the rhetorical awareness.

William Burroughs was a beat writer known by his intense relation with psychoactive substances and by his effusive critics over values with universal claims. Together with his beat friends, he invented a lifestyle that confronted the United States society of his days by certain material divestment and the incorporation of cultural elements and social types considered morally reprehensible, rejected or stigmatized such as junkies, gays, blacks and indigenous people. Among the beats, friendship was a way of life invention. Burroughs presents his courage of truth by clashing with the prohibitionism, attacking the medical concept of addiction and elaborating a life from knowledges and techniques of the users of psychoactive substances. In literature, he has been known by an intense experimentation of forms of writing and by his reflections about virus, control and language. Writing has gone through his life, first as a way of transforming the horror at the accident that culminated in his wife Joan Vollmer s death, passing by the transformation of the subject in Junky and as everyday exercises to elaborate a thought by images and a space-silence writing. He elaborated a life against controls and viruses. This research deals with Burroughs s scripture-life by means of the genealogy and the Michel Foucault s notion of aesthetics of existence from two issues: drugs and language. It is an analysis about the life elaboration of William Burroughs and a work from his existence

Abstract:
This paper explores the development and evolution of the un/chrono/logical timeline of histories of arts education initiated by the Another Roadmap Africa Cluster (ARAC) Histories of Arts Education Research Project. The timeline, consisting of multiple iterations, challenges the traditional notions of history and engages with personal narratives, language, and multimodal elements. The research project aims to map and understand the diverse models of arts education, emphasising local perspectives and resistance to imported models. Drawing inspiration from the Medu Art Ensemble, the research framework employs intergenerational collaboration, dialogue, decentralisation, and a focus on language and ideology. The paper highlights the significance of the timeline in reimagining and practicing arts education.

Gattenhof, Sandra, Donna Hancox, Sasha Mackay, Kathryn Kelly, Te Oti Rakena, and Gabriela Baron. Valuing the Arts in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. Queensland University of Technology, December 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.5204/rep.eprints.227800.

Full text
Abstract:
The arts do not exist in vacuum and cannot be valued in abstract ways; their value is how they make people feel, what they can empower people to do and how they interact with place to create legacy. This research presents insights across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand about the value of arts and culture that may be factored into whole of government decision making to enable creative, vibrant, liveable and inclusive communities and nations. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed a great deal about our societies, our collective wellbeing, and how urgent the choices we make now are for our futures. There has been a great deal of discussion – formally and informally – about the value of the arts in our lives at this time. Rightly, it has been pointed out that during this profound disruption entertainment has been a lifeline for many, and this argument serves to re-enforce what the public (and governments) already know about audience behaviours and the economic value of the arts and entertainment sectors. Wesley Enoch stated in The Saturday Paper, “[m]etrics for success are already skewing from qualitative to quantitative. In coming years, this will continue unabated, with impact measured by numbers of eyeballs engaged in transitory exposure or mass distraction rather than deep connection, community development and risk” (2020, 7). This disconnect between the impact of arts and culture on individuals and communities, and what is measured, will continue without leadership from the sector that involves more diverse voices and perspectives. In undertaking this research for Australia Council for the Arts and Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture & Heritage, New Zealand, the agreed aims of this research are expressed as: 1. Significantly advance the understanding and approaches to design, development and implementation of assessment frameworks to gauge the value and impact of arts engagement with a focus on redefining evaluative practices to determine wellbeing, public value and social inclusion resulting from arts engagement in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. 2. Develop comprehensive, contemporary, rigorous new language frameworks to account for a multiplicity of understandings related to the value and impact of arts and culture across diverse communities. 3. Conduct sector analysis around understandings of markers of impact and value of arts engagement to identify success factors for broad government, policy, professional practitioner and community engagement. This research develops innovative conceptual understandings that can be used to assess the value and impact of arts and cultural engagement. The discussion shows how interaction with arts and culture creates, supports and extends factors such as public value, wellbeing, and social inclusion. The intersection of previously published research, and interviews with key informants including artists, peak arts organisations, gallery or museum staff, community cultural development organisations, funders and researchers, illuminates the differing perceptions about public value. The report proffers opportunities to develop a new discourse about what the arts contribute, how the contribution can be described, and what opportunities exist to assist the arts sector to communicate outcomes of arts engagement in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Abstract:
The content coverage of the Integrated Curriculum (IC) for Nepali Language Arts and Reading is broad, but some topics, including foundational reading and writing skills, are emphasised more than others. The IC generally emphasises middle levels of cognitive demand. IC content is highly aligned across Grades 1-3. Grade 1 teachers cover IC topics more broadly, and typically at lower cognitive demand levels, than the curriculum prescribes. The Classroom-Based Early Grade Reading Assessment (CB-EGRA) focuses on a narrower set of skills than either the curriculum or instruction, and typically at higher cognitive demand levels. Student performance on the CB-EGRA is low, suggesting the need for greater support on specific topics and at more basic skill levels so students have a stronger foundation for future progress.

Hernandez, Laura E., and Eddie Rivero. Striving for relationship-centered schools: Insights from a community-based transformation campaign. Learning Policy Institute, October 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.54300/621.856.

Abstract:
Research shows that youth who have positive connections with adults at their schools demonstrate higher levels of motivation, self-esteem, and prosocial behavior than their peers in less relationship-centered contexts. Relationship-centered schools also enable a range of positive student academic outcomes, including increased attendance, graduation rates, achievement on English language arts and math assessments, and college-going rates. This report focuses on one relationship-centered high school transformation effort—the Relationship Centered Schools (RCS) campaign, a youth-led effort supported by the community-based organization Californians for Justice (CFJ). Through interviews with CFJ organizers, district and school leaders, practitioners, and current and former youth organizers, this report highlights examples of uptake in two settings—the Long Beach Unified School District and Fresno’s McLane High School. The cases demonstrate how local schools and districts have furthered relationship-centered schooling, the conditions and factors that have enabled or hindered RCS work, and the emerging impacts of RCS efforts on practice and policy.

Abstract:
As all aspects of the American workplace become automated or digitally enhanced to some degree, K12 educators have an increasing responsibility to help their students acquire the technical skills necessary to organize and interpret information. Increasingly, this is done through Geographic Information Systems (GIS), especially in careers related to transportation and logistics. The Center for International Trade & Transportation (CITT) at CSU Long Beach has developed this K12 Special Investigation Project to introduce ArcGIS StoryMaps, an engaging, accessible and sophisticated web-based GIS application. The lessons center on e-commerce and its accompanying environmental and economic impact. Still, the activities can be easily adapted to projects in any subject area, such as humanities, science, math, or language arts. This teacher blueprint includes a teacher training guide with ten detailed lesson plans and activities. With the guidance of a National Board-Certified Teacher in Early Adolescence Math as lead instructor, the curriculum is designed to align with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Also, exploration of STEM and GIS-related careers are incorporated into the lesson plans.

Shaw, Jackie, and Mary Wickenden. Insights from Inclusive Participatory Fieldwork with Learners with Deafblindness and Other Marginalised Impairments. Institute of Development Studies, November 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2023.014.

Abstract:
This paper describes and discusses a piece of inclusive and participatory fieldwork carried out at two sites in Bangladesh in close collaboration with local and international NGOs working on disability as part of the UK government (FCDO) funded Disability Inclusive Development (DID) programme. Our research fieldwork engaged two small groups of learners with specific identities (deafblind or young women) in workshops aiming to gather examples of and understand their experiences as young people with disabilities, both in general terms and about a work-focussed programme. Creative, visual and arts based multi-modal methods were used to encourage maximum participation, including from those with little or no spoken language or literacy. Some were accompanied by carers or supporters who also shared their perspectives. Local staff teams from collaborating INGOs and Organisations of People with Disabilities (OPDs) supported, participated in and learnt from the process. Detail about the workshop activities and data from the participants are presented and discussed. Recommendations from the participants and reflections on the methodological aspects are provided. We concluded that using inclusive, participatory and creative research methods generates rich insights into people’s experiences, which can increase understandings about marginalised people’s lives and inform future interventions to promote their inclusion.
