This study was carried out in a woodland on the campus of University of Western Sydney at Richmond, Australia to investigate seasonal effects and recovery speed of arboreal arthropods after disturbance. Twenty one pairs of Melaleuca linariifolia Sm. trees were sampled using insecticide spraying in a log2 nine period sequence (1-32) of weeks supplemented by additional samples to incorporate seasonal (weeks 24 and 48) and annual (week 52) samples. Using species accumulation curves, it was found that four collectors provided a reasonable representation of a tree's fauna and that a single tree doe

Carboniferous fossils are often found as three-dimensional voids within siderite (FeCO3) nodules. Traditional techniques of study – splitting the host concretion and inspecting the surfaces revealed – do not allow the investigation of morphology within the part / counterpart, and prevent complete data recovery. X-ray micro-tomography (XMT) and 'virtual palaeontology' can overcome such limitations. This thesis documents the application of XMT to a number of Carboniferous arthropod groups. Due to the variability in RNAi efficiency, RNAi-based methods are currently being developed for controlling only coleopteran insects which are known to be amenable to RNAi. The first chapter of my thesis includes findings from research to investigate what are the factors that make coleopteran insects relatively more efficient in RNAi.
