Abstract: The Arthurian legends are well-known for their knights-in-shining armour, quests, chivalry, supernatural encounters, and of course, swords being pulled out of stones. The use of the 'sword-in-the-stone' trope allows the 21st century superhero films to play with and reinvent the implications of a 'true right to rule,' and the bodies that are expected to fill those roles. This article presents a proposal for the elaboration of an RPG game with board support based on the remediation of literary narratives and which is thought both for use in the classroom, as a didactic tool, but understood essentially as a playful activity. For that, we first start an observation about the act of playing and what it means in society and in linguistic terms. Subsequently, we are concerned with defining what a game is so that we can effectively present the proposal. To better exemplify it, we present as an example the remediation of Arthurian legends from Le Morte d’Arthur, by Th

Abstract: This essay investigates the question of King Arthur's historicity alongside the construction of the British Empire in early modern British history and cultural literary production. In surveying how monarchs co-opted the fantastical lore of Arthur via historical genealogy to consolidate their power, 'Concocting a Seat at the Roundtable' illustrates how Tudor and Stuart monarchs reified engines of dominance not only in their own time, but also in the centuries that followed. The multi-layered symbolism of this miraculous self-moving ship is constantly enriched with new connotations, and from being a sacred place that offers the successful knights the opportunity to meditate on their spiritual life before reaching Sarras and the Holy Grail

Abstract:
Building on the pioneering work of Edward Croft Murray, this paper investigates a painting in Chichester Cathedral depicting Henry VII and Henry VIII and executed by the Netherlandish artist Lambert Barnard. With close attention to the chronology of Henry VIII's reign, it explores the painting's rich religious, political and cultural context, proposes a date for its execution, and reveals its links to Arthurian legend. The painting emerges as a sophisticated work of political theatre and propaganda with important implications for our understanding of early Tudor image-making.
