Abstract:
In Marion Zimmer Bradley's retelling of the Arthurian legends, The Mists of Avalon, she creates two dystopic cultures: Avalon and Camelot. Contrasting Bradley's account of the legends with the traditional version, Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, reveals that Bradley's sweeping revisions of the tradition do little to create a feminist ideal. A skeptical questioning of the text's plot and characters with the Women's Movement in mind opens an interpretation of the text as a critique of feminism itself.

Abstract:
This work is a comprehensive study of the Sephardic Romancero and the historical, political and cultural elements that have contributed to the maintenance of the romance tradition in Sephardic life. The investigation begins with an overview of the past studies of the Sephardic Romancero and is followed by a survey of the history of the Sephardic Jews, both in Spain and in the Spanish Diaspora. An historical approach to the literary and linguistic aspects of the Sephardic Romancero follows and this approach is then applied to a musical study. The concluding chapter discusses the uses and functions of the romancero in the Sephardic world, particularly among the Sephardic women and the social processes that have contributed to the maintenance of the romance tradition in Sephardic culture.

Hayes, Lydia Helen. "Looking beyond Guinevere : depictions of women in Chrétien de Troyes’ Arthurian romances, the cult of saints, and religious texts of the twelfth century." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/12100.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides a reading of Chrétien de Troyes' Arthurian romances that reflects the cultural and intellectual context of twelfth-century Christianity. The impact of this context on Chrétien's romances is examined by identifying the influence that contemporaneous biblical expository texts, hagiography, and the material culture of the cult of saints had upon his work. Although scholars have devoted much attention to the study of Chrétien's romances, and some have examined the potential influences of various medieval Christian beliefs, practices, and symbols on his work, none have yet to produce a thorough study of these elements while focusing specifically on the female characters. Scholars have identified the influence of the cult of saints on the depiction of Guinevere in The Knight of the Cart, but have not examined this influence on the depictions of the ladies in the other four romances in detail. I look beyond Guinevere, examining all of the female protagonists in the Arthurian romances, comparing their attributes and actions to those of biblical women in contemporaneous biblical exposition and those of saints in hagiography. At the heart of this comparison is the relationship between the lady and her knight, a relationship that is described in similar terms to that between a biblical woman and God and that between saint and devotee.

Full text
Abstract:
The prayers and oaths of the Middle English verse romances draw upon a range of pious formulae. These stock invocations rehearse key episodes from salvation history. Such formulae are widely viewed as mere line-fillers and they are rarely credited with stylistic influence. Yet the startling power of their apposite usage in charged narrative moments prompts further investigation. The thesis aims to demonstrate how the use of pious formulae in the romances is not inevitably mechanical. It comprises a catalogue and stylistic study of such formulae. The catalogue records all examples appearing in a single witness to each of the pre-1500 verse romances. By furnishing information on prosodic context, it offers a reference tool with which to measure the extent of technical determination in the appearance of a formula. The thesis analyses this material and advances claims for the aesthetic value of pious formulae. Chapter 1 reviews the evidence of the catalogue. It is shown how pious formulae embody an impressive range of devotional imagery. Chapter 2 illustrates that cognate formulae are widely employed in Middle English religious literature. It is shown how therein they exhibit a theological significance and a stylistic saliency. Chapter 3 shows how intermittent reflections of this serious stylistic usage are apparent in the pious romance, Guy of Warwick. Chapters 4 and 5 show how the affective resonance of such formulae is consistently exploited in the Stanzaic Morte Arthur and William of Palerne respectively. Chapter 6 provides a brief summary. It concludes that the pious formulae of the romances can convey a strong aesthetic charge. They serve as more than mere line-fillers. Three appendices are included. Appendix A explores the relation between pious formulae and medieval profane oaths. Appendix B lists the variant readings of the formulae of four romances. Appendix C comprises the catalogue.

Abstract: Among many titles published between 1808 and 1822 by Impressão Régia (Royal Printing) from Rio de Janeiro, this thesis concentrates on the novels. In the 19th century the organization of documents and different works published in such period began. However, a significant part of the copies had already disappeared at that time. So, the method used for identifying the titles included newspaper announcements. As publications made in Lisbon were also announced, there was a doubt regarding the delimitation of the ones which had been effectively published by the Impressão Régia from Rio de Janeiro. The confusion about printing places supported the hypothesis about an editorial relation between the Impressão Régia established in the colony and its congener in Lisbon. Such hypothesis was refuted by us after investigating the Portuguese printing house and the titles of novels published by it. We concluded that it would only be possible to define which novels were published by the first printing house officially established in Brazil by means of the localization of the copies and the confirmation, through the data printed on the title page, that they were printed in Rio de Janeiro. We localized almost every novel which were catalogued and delimited those which originated from the press of Impressão Régia from Rio de Janeiro. During the process, we framed the editorial history of each one of them, verify the way they were announced by the booksellers in the newspapers and analyzed these books from the material and textual points view. Being rare and hard to be located, nowadays, these novels are seldom remembered or totally unknown. Nevertheless, they are important for studies about the circulation of books during the colonial period and the subsequent years, and they definitely played an important part in forming the audience's taste for novel reading

Abstract:
Although the figure of the warrior woman has always existed as a literary topos, the popularity of the warrior woman figure has never been greater than in the period of the Italian Renaissance. The character of the female warrior in the 14th and 15th centuries in Italy results from many literary traditions ranging from the Amazons of classical and medieval times, to the many versions of the Aeneid to the character of Aigiarne in the Milione of Marco Polo. In addition, other examples exist of female characters who demonstrate their fighting capabilities who, without necessarily being considered warrior women, have helped nonetheless to shape the character of the warrior woman in the Italian Renaissance. The main objective of this thesis is to document the formation of the warrior woman figure in Italian Cavalier Romance poems dating from the late 1300's to the early 1400's before the great poems of Pulci and Boiardo.

Contemporaneity has contributed to changes in the way gender and sexuality issues are seen in society. Traditional patterns have been broken and some forms of prejudice do not fit into current society anymore. Today, some men and women have no longer a single, fixed identity, and no longer form a dual pair, and this fragmentation of gender identities makes it possible to create nomenclatures. Based on this context of change, the characters of our corpus are women, men, gays, lesbians, and the construction of gender is seen, therefore, as a narrative strategy, in which women writers try to show that there are possibilities for gender formation which differs from the patterns imposed by the heteronormative matrix. Thus, we perform an analysis of how these configurations of gender, male or female, are represented in literature, starting from a premise that gender identities suffer ruptures from traditional models and are displaced, due to diverse sexual orientations present in contemporary times. As a corpus of this work, we chose five works by American, Brazilian and English writers, beginning in the 1970s: Rubyfruit Jungle (1973) by Rita Mae Brown; The Front Runner (1974), by Patricia Nell Warren; Hotel Dulac (1984), by Anita Brookner; Duas iguais (1996), by Cíntia Moscovich and Sapato de salto (2006), by Lygia Bojunga. The configuration of the characters gender identity is analyzed in the light of Judith Butler's theory of performativity (1993, 2003, 2004, 2015), according to which gender is constituted through the repetition of stylized acts that become inherent to individual. Butler, along with Rubin (1975), Wittig (1982, 1993) and Connell (2000), also addresses issues related to the construction of masculinities and/or femininities, and Laclau (1990, 2004), Ortiz (1998, 2006) and Santos (1993), among others, ground the study on the changes that occurred in society, as well as these interfere in the construction of the gender identity.

This work aims to map and analyze both circulation and critical reception of James Fenimore Cooper’s novels in Brazil in the 19th century, especially considering the movement of books in Rio de Janeiro, extending to São Paulo. In order to understand the phenomenon of the circulation of his works among the readership of that time, we will present data related to the flow of books and feuilletons, using, as primary sources, catalogs of bookstores and periodicals from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, as well as the catalogs of libraries and reading rooms of the Imperial Court. We will reflect on the critical reception of Cooper's works based on reviews that where attached to the book sale advertisements, as well as on the critical texts that, at that time, cite the work of the writer in a way compared to the work of José de Alencar. We considered that it was possible to understand how Cooper's circulation and critical reception occurred, in addition to understanding, in more detail, aspects about the taste for reading of his novels in the 19th century.

Using the memorialistic element as analysis object, I examine the way the narrators articulate it in the three novels' plots, associating it with the spatial data predominant in these narratives. I work with the hypothesis that, by the memory of their narrators or their characters, the antinomy between the city and the backwoods is essentially recovered, with the objective to verify that the recurrence of this contrast characterizes a thematic obsession of the author. Several issues arise then related to this fundamental spatiotemporal opposition that pervades these novels, which goes from the characterization of man's existential problems to relevant aspects of Brazilian social reality. Thereby, besides the verification of the narrative categories of time and space in these novels, I aim to present, as part of my hypothesis, the importance of the procedures employed as a formal solution to the introduction and development of the issues discussed. I seek to demonstrate how the memorialistic instance guides the author's process of composition as a factor of spatial alternation, evidencing a consonance relation between the novels' structure and content, in order to mirror the psychological condition of the characters, especially of the trilogy protagonist, Totonhim, associated to his identity constitution

Colwell, Tania Michelle. "Reading Mélusine : romance manuscripts and their audiences c.1380-c.1530." Phd thesis, Canberra, ACT : The Australian National University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/109692.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the historical reception of the prose Roman de Melusine and the poetic Roman de Parthenay from the twin perspectives of the romance manuscripts and their audiences. The Melusine romances attained wide popularity in manuscript form from their composition in the late fourteenth century until the early sixteenth century. By investigating the patronage, presentation, and ownership of the romance manuscripts, I ask how and why the works appealed to and retained their hold on later medieval imaginations? What cultural values did the romances express or reflect and what meanings did they attain which might have facilitated their circulation far beyond the boundaries of Poitou? In exploring these questions, my study offers a nuanced historical appraisal of the place of the Melusine romances in the cultural lives of late medieval Francophone audiences. The Melusine romances are located in over thirty surviving manuscripts. Employing an interdisciplinary approach, my research analyses the relationships between the themes expressed in these manuscripts, and the historical concerns of the French and Flemish nobility who constituted the romances’ primary audience. In addition to exploring and revising conventional explanations for the patronage of the romances, I examine the textual, paratextual, and decorative mouvance to which the romances were subject, and the intertextual relationships created by the inclusion of the romances within compilation manuscripts. From this analysis, I identify a series of themes which demonstrably intersected with the interests and anxieties of noble reading communities among whom the manuscripts circulated. This thesis thus complements and extends existing studies of manuscript decoration and the historical reception of early editions of the prose Melusine romance which were enjoyed by a cross-section of social groups from the 1470s onwards. My research suggests that the Melusine romances attained a significant position in late medieval noble culture for two interrelated reasons. First, the medium of the manuscript itself offered a flexible format which accommodated the changing preferences of patrons and audiences of the romances. Second, and paradoxically, Melusine manuscripts persistently expressed a range of concepts and attitudes of enduring relevance to their noble audiences with respect to: issues of dynastic prestige and the legitimacy of territorial tenure; metaphysical and spiritual concerns about fate and salvation; political propaganda; government; and education. The value of my study lies in the insights it offers into the mentalites of the later medieval nobility, a numerically small but influential social group, and the relationships between elite audiences and their preferred forms of literate culture. This thesis extends scholarly understandings of, and offers fresh hypotheses for the patronage of the Roman de Melusine and the Roman de Parthenay respectively. Further, it contextualises its analysis of the Melusine manuscripts and compilation contents in the light of historical events and concerns confronting late medieval noble audiences. It thus demonstrates the importance of combining literary and historical approaches when exploring the values and meanings attached to historical literature. While historical and literary approaches each offer unique insights into medieval understandings of a work, it is only by contextualising each set of findings produced by the two modes of analysis against each other that a nuanced appreciation of a literary work’s historical role and importance can be produced.

Thesis, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/13862.

Full text
Abstract:
When comparing Ywain and Gawain with its source, Chretien de Troyes' Yvain. many critics concentrate on the dramatic omissions and reductions made by the anonymous English adapter. However, the more subtle differences between the two Arthurian romances also deserve attention. Since the goal of medieval adapters of secular texts was to rethink and reinvent their sources, these changes could reveal further aspects of the originality of Ywain and Gawain. which is generally considered a sophisticated work in its own right. With this study, I hope to demonstrate that some of the differences in the Middle English adaptation may signify an effort on the part of the adapter to present his own vision of society and hierarchy. While it is not possible to situate all the characters on a social scale, the probable hierarchical relation between many of them can be established based on their lineage, tide or social position. The present analysis examines modifications in the interaction between some of these characters—due to the limits of this study, I treat only the cases where at least one female character is concerned—and the role of hierarchical submission. I explore examples from two perspectives: that of the characters of lower rank, whose subordination to social superiors is a basic element of social order, and that of the characters of higher rank, whose standing implies both their own authority and the submission of their inferiors. I found that the English poet diminished or omitted many examples that do not respect hierarchy in Yvain. creating the impression of a more hierarchical society in the adaptation. That overall impression is not changed by the fact that the adapter also introduced or amplified other exceptions to the hierarchy, for they are not of an extreme nature and occur only in a limited context. In fact, these additions seem to follow a logical pattern as well, presenting the image of a society in which rank and power are linked. Consequently, they too may be interpreted as part of a coherently modified version of society and hierarchy created by the author of Ywain and Gawain.

Hwang, Hyunyoung. "A musical discussion and analysis of romance sans paroles by three French composers : Charles-Francois Gounod, Camille Saint-Saens and Gabriel Faure." 2013. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1738934.

Abstract:
Contained in this study is a musical discussion and analysis of seven Romance Sans Paroles (song without words), written by three French composers, Charles-François Gounod, Camille Saint-Saëns, and Gabriel Fauré. The Romance Sans Parole genre seems to be quite unknown in the piano field; as a result, there are few secondary sources available. By immersing myself in these scores, I sought to discover their musical value and compositional nuance and excellence. I thoroughly investigated each composer’s unique treatment of melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, and form. Chapter One includes an Introduction, brief biographical information on each composer, the Need for the Study, the Purpose of the Study, a Review of Literature, and a Methodology. Chapters Two, Three, and Four consist of a musical analysis and discussion of the seven Romance Sans Paroles. Chapter Five offers a Conclusion and Suggestions for Further Study. I believe my dissertation will enhance the understanding and appreciation of this art form.

Chigidi, Willie L. "A study of Shona war fiction : the writer's perspectives." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/3118.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an in-depth study of Shona fiction about the liberation war in Zimbabwe. It looks at the way Zimbabwe’s liberation war is portrayed in Shona fiction and focuses on the factors that shaped writers’ perspectives on that war. It is argued that Shona war fiction writers romanticised the war and in the process simplified and distorted history. The researcher postulates that writers’ perspectives on this liberation war were shaped by factors that include the mood of celebration and euphoria, the dominant ideology of the time, the situations of independence and freedom, and literary competitions. The thesis further raises and illustrates the point that writers produced romances of adventure because they were writing on the theme of war, and if one writes on the theme of war one ends up writing an adventure story. However, it is also acknowledged that because authors were writing on a historical event they could not ignore history completely. Some aspects of history are incorporated into the fiction, thereby retaining a semblance of historical realism. The post-independence period is also seen as a time of cultural revival and this is considered as the reason behind the authors’ tendency to celebrate Shona traditional institutions and culture. The celebration of Shona traditional religion and culture introduced into the fiction the element of the supernatural that strengthened the romance aspect of the novels. Shona war fiction writers also perpetuate female stereotyping. Female characters are depicted as everything except guerrilla fighters. It is argued that there are no female characters that play roles of guerrilla fighters because during the actual war women were not visible at the war front, fighting. The thesis argues that men, who were pioneers of the guerrilla war and writers of the war stories, excluded women from liberation war discourse and ultimately from literary discourse as well. A few writers who comment on the quality of Zimbabwe’s independence and freedom show the disillusionment and despair of the peasants and ex-combatants as they struggled to settle down and recover from the war.
