Abstract:

Ao considerar a expans�o da piscicultura do tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) nas regi�es Norte, Nordeste, Centro-oeste e Sudeste do Brasil, a busca pela efici�ncia dos seus procedimentos se faz necess�rio no atual cen�rio competitivo. O mapeamento e envolvimento dos atores desta atividade mostram-se imprescind�vel para a reorganiza��o e a concep��o de um processo produtivo dentro do contexto de cadeia produtiva. Neste sentido, este artigo, ao levantar o estado da arte atual sobre os principais entraves da piscicultura desenvolvida no estado do Amazonas, aponta a necessidade da cria��o de um modelo log�stico de transporte intermodal, aproveitando, assim as caracter�sticas naturais da regi�o em estudo. O artigo inicia contextualizando a atividade de pesca do Amazonas, seguido da descri��o da cadeia produtiva do peixe assim como a caracteriza��o da piscicultura do tambaqui no estado e, terminar com a reflex�o em se pensar na log�stica de distribui��o desta cadeia valendo-se de uma plataforma log�stica intermodal.  PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Aquicultura; Colossoma macropomum; Plataformas Log�sticas; Produ��o de pescado.

Abstract:

This work introduces a numerical, continuous measure of symmetry for 3D stick creatures and solid 3D objects. Background information about the property of symmetry is provided, and motivations for developing a symmetry measure are described. Three approaches are mentioned, and two of them are presented in detail using formal mathematical language. The best approach is used to sort a set of creatures according to their symmetry. Experiments with a mixed set of 84 individuals originating from both human design and evolution are performed to examine symmetry within these two sources, and to determine if human designers and evolutionary processes prefer symmetry or asymmetry.

Goiânia consistiu na experiência de criação da cidade planejada como a transformação espacial, completa e simultânea, independente da diacronia, no contexto do seu surgimento. Contudo, hoje o desenho e mesmo seu plano há muito já se transformaram e não mais correspondem às ideias originais. Buscamos compreender tais transformações a partir da construção da temporalidade que vai alterando o sentido das paisagens, promovendo rupturas com as formas que as engendraram e o surgimento de novas imagens e sensibilidades urbanas, sobretudo advindas da literatura e da arte. A construção da temporalidade opera uma transformação nas paisagens de Goiânia em paisagens imaginárias que surgiram sob o signo de serem formas espaciais, ambientais, urban�sticas, arquitetônicas, art�sticas e culturais; inclusive, aquelas advindas de processos preservação do passado e da valorização da memória urbana. Palavras-chave: cidades planejadas, paisagem urbana, poesia.

Abstract:

Religious teachings come from Allah's revelation while culture is a human creation. However, religion and culture are two things that influence each other. Religious values and cultural values penetrate and shape the character of the community who adhere to them. This paper is a study of the life of Islam in East Nusa Tenggara Province in its interaction with local culture. Muslims in Timor who come from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds are people who are devout in practicing their religious faith. But on the other hand, they also stick to and obey their culture. In its embodiment, religion purifies culture and culture forms the character of society to be loyal to their religious faith.

Abstract:

This article charts the development of, and connections created through, the Vancouver-based Talking Stick Festival to inform how performance- making and gathering over shared interests can maintain artistic relationships and nurture respectful intercultural relations. We demonstrate this through genealogically connecting the Talking Stick Festival to the 1997 Festival of the Dreaming in Sydney Australia linking this theoretically to Indigenous ideas of transformational love, “grounded normativity” and kin relations that cross earthly boundaries. We examine the strategic ways that the annual festival builds networks of communication, including movement around territories, and the valuing of flexibility to honour accountability. And, of immense value to the rebuilding of broken kinship networks is the love and support for emergent artists as well as staff and volunteers who are mentored in the ever-expanding and continuous building of relations. We write explicitly from our own positions and discuss how we, the co-authors of this piece, have ourselves been transformed through interactions with the festival as a way to show how this kind of relationship building can create a shared future. We conclude that the organizers of the Talking Stick Festival create spaces that centre Indigenous resurgence through personal experiences of transformation and kinstellatory relations of co-resistance.

Abstract This paper focuses on Amico Aspertini’s engraving Genesis Scene with Fall, Expulsion, Adam and Eve after the Fall, and Abel’s Sacrifice, a complex allegory that places a self-mirroring man in the middle of the events. The aim of the article is to highlight the general importance of the mirror motif in representations of the biblical story of Eden. On the one hand, the seduction of Eve was understood as a visual event and as an act of artful illusion. On the other hand, envy (invidia) or, alternatively, pride (superbia) was considered to be the reason for the original sin. And either personification had a mirror as its main attribute. Aspertini’s engraving takes up this understanding of the fall to show that his own art and more generally all figurative imitations thrive on the productive tension between diabolic allurement and divine vision.

Abstract:

Message sticks are tools of graphic communication, once used across the Australian continent. While their styles vary, a typical message stick is a flattened or cylindrical length of wood with motifs engraved on all sides. Carried by special messengers over long distances, their motifs were intended to complement a verbally produced communication such as an invitation, a declaration of war, or news of a death. It was only in the late 1880s that message sticks first became a subject of formal anthropological enquiry at a time when the practice was already in steep transition; very little original research has been published in the 20th century and beyond. In this article, the author reviews colonial efforts to understand these objects, as recorded in documentary and museum archives, and describes transformations of message stick communication in contemporary settings. He summarizes the state-of-the-art in message stick research and identifies the still unanswered questions concerning their origins, adaptations and significance.

Tale approccio si fonda sulla considerazione del ruolo di questi servizi in ogni fase del percorso di piano/valutazione ambientale strategica (vas), dallo scoping alla stima degli effetti, alla definizione di criteri attuativi. I servizi ecosistemici sono stati caratterizzati elaborando dati spaziali provenienti da banche dati pubbliche o costruendo mappe originali con la collaborazione dei cittadini. L'analisi dello stato dei servizi ecosistemici e la stima della variazione del grado di erogazione degli stessi a seguito dell'attuazione delle previsioni di piano hanno costituito il contributo della vas alla sostenibilità delle scelte di piano.

Abstract:

The microscopic and sequential analysis of an early nineteenth-century American Indian calendar stick documents the notation of a precise, non-arithmetic, observational lunar year of twelve months with the evidence for added, subsidiary months suggesting the use of a thirteenth intercalary month every three years to bring the calendar into phase with the solar tropical year. The calendar stick is the most complex astronomical-calendric, problem-solving device known from the Americas outside of the high Mesoamerican and Andean Civilizations, but it is not derived from these late traditions. The analysis suggests the presence of an underlying observational conceptual base that may have come into the Americas from Asia.

Abstract. The current study investigated individual differences in the flexibility of peripersonal space (i.e., representational space near the body), specifically in relation to trait claustrophobic fear (i.e., fear of suffocating or being physically restricted). Participants completed a line bisection task with either a laser pointer (Laser condition), allowing for a baseline measure of the size of one’s peripersonal space, or a stick (Stick condition), which produces expansion of one’s peripersonal space. Our results revealed that individuals high in claustrophobic fear had larger peripersonal spaces than those lower in claustrophobic fear, replicating previous research. We also found that, whereas individuals low in claustrophobic fear demonstrated the expected expansion of peripersonal space in the Stick condition, individuals high in claustrophobic fear showed less expansion, suggesting decreased flexibility. We discuss these findings in relation to the defensive function of peripersonal space and reduced attentional flexibility associated with trait anxieties.

Abstract:

The influences of perceived odor qualities on the retention of olfactory information across the adult lifespan were examined. Young (19–36 years), young-old (60–74 years), and old (75–91 years) adults (n = 202) rated a set of unfamiliar odors across a series of perceptual dimensions (i.e., pleasantness, intensity, and irritability) at encoding. The overall results indicated that memory for unpleasant olfactory information was better than that for pleasant odors across the lifespan. Also, participants showed better retention for odors perceived with high intensity and irritability than for odors rated with low or medium scores. Interestingly, the old adults showed selective beneficial memory effects for odors rated as highly irritable. To the extent that perceptions of high irritability reflect an activation of the trigeminal sensory system, this finding suggests that older adults may use trigeminal components in odor information to compensate for age-related impairments in olfactory memory.

Abstract:

In Faculty of Industrial Technology Islamic University of Indonesia, whiteboards are used as a medium of learning in the classroom. Generally, instructors use non-permanent markers to make it easy to clean with an eraser. The problem that occurs is if this eraser is often used, the ability will decrease. This is caused by the large amount of ink markers that have been attached to the eraser cloth so that some ink that can not stick in the form of fine grains eventually falls and collects in the dirt container. These fine grains can contaminate clothes, hands, and other body parts. In addition, there are remnants of ink markers on the board that can hinder to write the next material. But to overcome this, there is a contradiction that is if an eraser is often used, the ability will decrease. To eliminate this contradiction, a systematic method of problem solving was used, namely TRIZ method. This method helps to provide solutions through the principle of preliminary action. This principle was realized by adding a spray mechanism that is used just before the erasing process is carried out. Testing the ability of the eraser was done on a whiteboard with ink markers with the size of 50 x 50 cm. The results show that the new eraser that has been developed is able to bind more ink markers and can completely erase so that it can write the next material clearly.

Abstract:

Povijest hrvatske međuratne arhitekture u mnogim je pregledima jednaka povijesti arhitekture modernizma, odnosno internacionalnog stila. Ipak, zgrade s neostilskom dekoracijom čine značajan dio korpusa zagrebačke arhitekture 1920-ih i 1930-ih. Najzastupljenija je stilska tendencija neoklasicizma, a stilska jedinstva formiraju i zgrade čije je oblikovanje eksterijera nadahnuto historijskim stilovima i (najčešće) lokalnom tradicijom. Većina arhitekata nije sklona samo jednoj stilskoj tendenciji, nego ovisno o ukusu i ciljevima investitora projektiraju, često i istodobno, zgrade s obilježjima neoklasicizma, historizma i tradicionalizma. Pri tome sasvim modernistički, racionalno i ekonomično promišljaju prostorna rješenja.

Abstract:

This is a voice in a discussion on the subject of the field of values within which twentieth-century music developed. The author under-takes a polemic with Alicja Jarzębska, who in her book Spór o piękno muzyki [Argument over the Beauty of Music] put forward the thesis that the musical culture of the previous century was caught up in a struggle between two antinomic visions of reality: it was faced with a choice between Christian Platonism and post-Christian existentia-lism, i.e., a conglomerate of pantheism, prometheism, influences from beyond Europe, nihilism, dehumanisation, ideological seductions and cynicism. In response to this thesis the article proposes a reflection on the causes of the axiological instability and the drama that left its mark on the music of the last century. This drama – and this is the main thesis of the essay – results from the conflict between tradition and the modern natural and historical sciences. This conflict brings about a profound change in the response to the world and the arti-stic imagination: the centre is no longer the perfection of the Idea or Creation, but the mystery of the suffering integral to the nature of existence. Such a perspective means that the picture of twentieth-century music forms a configuration significantly different from that proposed by Jarzębska.

Abstract:

This article reflects on the role of the walking stick in the nineteenth-century city and explores the nature of the criticisms directed at it. The criticism and mocking of certain ways of holding the cane display the deep conflicts within the culture of urban strolling concerning how to take part in it, and who were allowed to do so. By identifying an irritation with canes, we see that there was a conflict between the purposeful culture of walking and the superficial culture of performativity and display, which forced Victorian men to be extremely careful of how their behaviour was perceived. By bringing the walking stick to the fore, the paper illustrates its role in a struggle between ostentation and sobriety and how its importance in cultures of both self-possession and flamboyance is indicative of aspects of the history of urban walking.

Abstract:

Abstract The question of what works in crime control has been frequently discussed over the past few decades. However, knowledge about and evidence from China is limited. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of three strategies of crime control—the ‘stick policy’, the ‘carrot policy’ and conflict resolution—in China, using a provincial panel data from 1988 to 2014. The results suggest that (1) the ‘carrot policy’ with social welfare provision helps to prevent crime, while the ‘stick policy’ with increasing judicial expenditure does not have a significant effect; (2) conflict resolution functions as an effective strategy of crime control. The policy implication is that, to prevent crime and maintain social order in a transitional society like China, government might need to shift its policy orientation away from strengthening coercive power to focussing on improving people’s livelihood and facilitating conflict resolution.

Abstract:

This nonexperimental, exploratory, mixed-design study used questionnaires with 167 preservice secondary teachers to identify prior educational experiences associated with student-teachers’ inquiry understanding. Understanding was determined through content analysis then open coding of definitions of inquiry and descriptions of best-experienced inquiry instruction, in terms of 23 potential learner-inquiry outcomes. Only two of seven educational-context variables related to understanding: prior experience doing a thesis or research—especially to definition quality and having taken a research-methods course—especially to description quality. How definitions and descriptions of inquiry are different and similar was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Implications for methodology, theory, and practice were presented, for example, research opportunities and research-methods training during teacher education.

UNA STIMA DELLA BASE AGRICOLA DELLA SICILIA GRECALo studio dell'agricoltura dell'antica Grecia si è sviluppato notevolmente in questi ultimi decenni; tuttavia in Sicilia, un'isola nota in antichità per la sua capacità e prodotti agricoli, l'interesse sembra essere stato alquanto limitato. Una delle ragioni per questa mancanza di interesse va ricercata nella struttura delle discipline accademiche, che tradizionalmente prevedono la divisione degli studiosi in due gruppi distinti: gli storici, che concentrano la loro attenzione primariamente sulle incomplete fonti scritte, e gli archeologi, che si occupano principalmente di storia dell'arte e della conferma della veracità delle fonti scritte. Numerosi problemi di studio e potenziali aree di interesse, quali ad esempio quelle relative all'ambiente naturale, all'uso del territorio ed ai modelli insediativi (le quali rientrano nell'ambito della geografia umana o storica), non sono toccati da questi due approcci. Questo articolo vuole rappresentare un primo passo nello studio di questi problemi, in risposta al recente appello di Nenci per un'indagine di quella che lui chiama la ‘Sicilia frumentaria’. Loscopo di questo studio è di proporre una stima delle dimensioni della base agricola della Sicilia greca. La prima parte discute le fonti e la metodologia. La seconda prende in considerazione il clima e tenta di stabilire le approssimative dimensioni e la natura dei territori utilizzati dalle undici principali città-stato dell'isola. Inoltre, una quantificazione della terra agricola disponibile e dei limiti superiori della popolazione che poteva essere sostenuta da tali risorse nel momento in cui queste venissero adoperate al loro massimo potenziale viene anche discussa. I risultati supportano l'idea che la Sicilia greca possedesse una grande potenziale agricolo, e che l'isola potesse sostenere una popolazione due volte superiore a quella creduta da Beloch, come anche Holm aveva in precedenza concluso.

Abstract:

Kameni ciborij iznad glavnog oltara korčulanske katedrale je remek-djelo najvećega korčulanskog klesara i graditelja Marka Andrijića, s proporcijama zlatnog reza i elementima pravog renesansnog stila. Potkraj 18. stoljeća četvrti, završni kat krova ciborija je uklonjen, a neki dijelovi su nestali. Donji dio ciborija je besprijekorno isklesan, dok je osmerostrani krov izrađen znatno lošije, s brojnim nedovršenostima, pogreškama, preklesavanjima i skraćivanjima. Na temelju detaljne analize tragova klesarskog alata i promjena geometrije kamenih elemenata, te studije izvornog ugovora o gradnji, donesen je zaključak da je donji dio ciborija izradio Marko Andrijić sa svojom radionicom, a gornji dio klesari koji nisu razumjeli njegov nacrt, odnosno konvenciju prikazivanja projekcije kosih površina u skraćenju. Srećom, iako je radi ispravka klesarske pogreške gornji dio ciborija malo sužen i snižen, ukupna proporcija nije se zbog toga bitno promijenila, pa je nakon restauracije izvornog stanja to najbolje djelo korčulanske renesanse ponovo zasjalo izvornim sjajem.

Abstract:

AbstractFlat and curved sticks with longitudinal facial grooves were dredged from the Sacred Cenote at Chichen Itza in the early 1900s. They are similar to specimens recovered from the North American Southwest, where a suggested function was for defense against atlatl darts. By accepting this interpretation, Mesoamerican archaeologists identified such artifacts as fending sticks. Hassig (1992:112–114, 126–127, 2001:810–811) disputes this role, arguing that the sticks were specialized short swords for close fighting. This sword interpretation is not supported by my analysis of the Chichen Itza artifacts or the mural evidence at that site. Defense against atlatl darts is possible but unlikely to have occurred in warfare and, in any case, Maya/Toltec warriors carried shields to protect themselves against darts and other weapons. Fending darts in ritual fights such as an atlatl duel is a plausible scenario, perhaps to prove warrior mettle or as a gladiatorial blood sport. Another possible use is for subduing captives after military victory: a throwing stick to disable humans for later sacrifice.

Članek bo predstavil vpliv, ki ga je imel slovenski pesnik Tomaž Šalamun (1941–2014, Slovenija) na poezijo brazilskega pesnika srednje generacije Narlana Matosa (1975, Itaquara, Bahia): osvetlil bo kontekst njunega srečanja in Šalamunov prvi vstop v brazilski literarni svet ter orisal prevajalsko in pesniško izmenjavo obeh avtorjev, prvine literarnega stika med dvema poetikama ter medbesedilne interakcije, ki se zrcalijo v poetiki brazilskega pesnika Matosa, zlasti v njegovi tretji zbirki Elegija novemu svetu in druge pesmi (Elegia ao novo mundo e outros poemas, 2012), v kateri se sklicevanje na Šalamuna udejanji zlasti v pesmi Pismo Slovencu. Matosov dialog s Šalamunovo poezijo poteka v nekaj ključnih točkah: v asociativnih preskokih in ludizmu ter v iskanju in posnemanju tipičnih ritmičnih vzorcev Šalamunovega verza in njegove glasbenosti.

AbstractThe existing paleoenvironmental data from the Australian arid zone lack sensitivity and come from only a few sites. Macrofossils and pollen from four dated middens of the stick-nest rat (Leporillus spp.) were analyzed from two sites in Western Australia. Animal and plant macrofossil remains were well preserved and provided evidence of change in species distribution within the last 1150 yr. Brush-tail possum and golden bandicoot have contracted their ranges in the recent past, possibly since the introduction of cats into Australia. An undescribed lacewing was also a significant find. Pollen preserved in parts of the same midden and in middens from different sites indicates that records are sensitive to the composition of the local vegetation when the midden was built. Pollen spectra are quite different from playa lakes, which record largely regional vegetation. Pollen preserved in the fecal pellets, desiccated urine, and grass mat nesting material provided similar information but some differences were apparent, suggesting dietary preferences were reflected in the fecal component. The pollen record suggested a trend to less-wooded vegetation cover in central Australia between 900 and 300 yr B.P.
