Abstract:
The immobilization of biomolecules on substrate surfaces for biosensor development requires linking molecules that must meet a specific set of criteria. Two such agents based on bifunctional alkyltrichlorosilane structures, 1-bromo-11-(trichlorosilyl)-undecane and 1-(thiotrifluoroacetato)-11-(trichlorosilyl)-undecane, are employed to generate thiol-functionalized surfaces either by nucleophilic substitution followed by reduction (bromine-containing derivative) or deprotection (fluorine-containing compound). Both molecules have been attached to the surfaces of silicon wafers in conjunction with the diluent silane, octyltrichlorosilane. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis in the conventional and angle-resolved modes confirms that both silanization reactions were successful. The alkyl-bromine surfaces were subjected to treatment with a set of nucleophilic reactants followed by reduction and derivatization with trifluoroacetic anhydride. The latter in conjunction with surface analysis was used to estimate the level of thiol functionalization achieved. The fluorine-containing undecane surface has been studied by surface analysis both before and after deprotection of the thiol group by hydroxylamine solution. The results indicate that a high coverage of the surface was found for the protected moiety, with approximately 10% of the trifluoro acetate groups remaining after the deprotection procedure.Key words: bifunctional silanes, thiol surface functionalization, biomolecule immobilization, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Abstract:
3,5-Di-tert-butyl-ortho-quinone, 6, and 1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl-2-(2-methoxyphenoxy)-1-propanone, 7, models for oxidized lignin and for lignin, were used as sensitizers of photo-oxidation. Product studies by HPLC from oxidation of methyl linoleate in solution sensitized by 6 or 7, and in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) sensitized by 6, showed a product distribution of six hydroperoxides, the four conjugated 9- and 13-hydroperoxides of the geometrical isomers: trans-10, cis-12 (2), cis-9, trans-11 (3), trans-10, trans-12 (4), and trans-9, trans-11 (5)-octadecadienoates plus two nonconjugated hydroperoxides. The higher cis/trans to trans/trans (ct/tt) of geometrical isomers (2 + 3//4 + 5) compared to ct/tt from known thermal free-radical peroxidations (Type 1) indicate that singlet oxygen (Type 2) oxidation occurs in reactions sensitized by 6 or 7. Kinetic studies by oxygen uptake are reported on oxidations of hydrocarbons 1-phenyl-2-methylpropene,8, and trans-stilbene,9, sensitized by the quinone, 6, or by a dye, Rose Bengal. Quenching studies imply singlet oxygen reactions. Milled wood lignin undergoes self-initiated photo-oxidation in water, and oxygen uptake was quenched by sodium azide. Cellobiose, a cellulose model, undergoes sensitized photo-oxidation using model quinone, 6, in a mixture of tert-butyl alcohol and water or using the sensitizers benzophenone or the lignin model, 7, delivered on a solid support, silica gel, and these oxidations were quenched with sodium azide. These results implicate singlet oxygen in the photo-yellowing of high lignin content wood pulps.Key words: lignin models, ortho-quinone, photo-oxidation, singlet oxygen, lignin, cellobiose.

Three new cage peroxides, 1,6-diaza-3,4,8,9-tetraoxabicyclo[4.4.2]dodecane (3a),1,6-diaza-3,4,8,9-tetraoxa-11-methylbicyclo[4.4.2]dodecane (3b), and 1,6-diaza-3,4,8,9-tetraoxatricyclo[4.4.2.411,12]hexadecane (4), have been prepared by reaction of 1,2-diaminoethane, 1,2-diaminopropane, and trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane, respectively, with formaldehyde and hydrogen peroxide in aqueous acidic solution. Their structures have been established by X-ray diffraction, and show the bridgehead nitrogen atoms to be predominantly sp2 hybridized. The structures accord with 1H and 13C NMR spectra. Variable temperature NMR studies show that the diperoxide 3a begins to undergo rapid inversion (on the NMR time scale) at about 303 K; up to 370 K the diperoxides 3b and 4 show no conformational change.Key words: cage compounds, formaldehyde, peroxides, amine nitrogen, hybridization.

Abstract:
Ab initio density functional calculations have been carried out on the ordered phase of ammonium chloride and the results compared with experimental data. Powder neutron diffraction measurements have been carried out on 14ND4Cl and 15ND4Cl at a temperature of 5 K; the lattice parameter is 3.8224(4) Å and the N-D bond length is 1.0318(8) Å. Calculated structural and spectroscopic quantities agree well with the results of the neutron diffraction refinements, and with measured spectroscopic data. The calculated barrier to reorientation of the ammonium ion about the fourfold axis is 29 kJ mol-1, and the calculated compressibility is 3.78 × 10-11 Pa-1. The octopole moment of the ammonium ion in the crystal has been estimated from the calculated electron density, and is about 10-20% greater than for the free ion. The octopole moment does not vary appreciably with the orientation of the ammonium ion in the lattice. There is no evidence of any covalent interaction between the ammonium and chloride ions.Key words: ammonium chloride, density functional theory, neutron diffraction, ab initio calculations.

Abstract:
The ab initio conformational energy minima of the model tripeptide N-formyl-L-alanyl-L-alanine amide (ALA-ALA) were determined by ab initio RHF/4-21G and RHF/6-31G* gradient geometry refinement. For the current investigation, 11 664 RHF/4-21G structures were optimized, representing grid points in the four-dimensional (phi1, psi1, phi2, psi2) conformational space, which were constructed in 40° increments along the outer torsions phi1 and psi2 and in 30° increments along the inner torsions psi1 and phi2 of ALA-ALA. Two new energy minima, previously not reported, are described. The positions of the RHF/6-31G* energy minima in phi,psi-space can differ significantly from the corresponding RHF/4-21G locations, and both sets are not clustered in the centers but on the fringes of the most populated regions of phi, psi-space in protein crystal structures. Thus, the torsion angles of the ab initio energy minima are not those of the typical substructures of proteins: the most stable helices are not alphaR, and the torsion angles of the most stable bend forms are not those most frequently encountered in protein bends. Limitations of the dipeptide approximation are explored, illustrating how the conformational energies of an amino acid residue depend on the state of its neighbor.Key words: alanyl alanine amide, dipeptide approximation, model tripeptide, peptide models, structure of peptides.

Abstract:
Communication and media are globally increasing; they require the possibility and ability to consume information, but also to produce knowledge. Any person can create and spread information through technological devices, so that the teaching-learning system runs in any space and moment. This phenomenon is called ubiquity. Currently, portable devices allow access to a world full of information, becoming part of our “clothing”, conceives an access like never before, because when faced with a request for information, there will always be a way to access it. Digital spaces, through interaction with many people, offer us valuable opportunities for distributed creativity and the generation of new knowledge. Thus, users not only present themselves as consumers of information, but also as content producers, acquiring an active role in the construction of knowledge. Ubiquity has also reached the field of medicine, where the medical practice is incorporated through technological means, making an important difference with habituality. Telemedicine makes development possible through collective benefit; however it is still necessary to unlearn some traditional paradigms while generating stimulation for learning and progress of new habits in the scientific community, taking care of the legal and human aspects in the exercise of their practice. Abstract:
A decade has passed since the attacks of 9/11. The heightened curiosity about terrorism has seen an avalanche of books and articles in recent years. In this article, after tracing the evolution of research in the area of social conflict, in general, and terrorism, in particular, I attempt to understand if the collected wisdom has altered the views of those who make public policies in the US. However, in a rapidly changing world, some of the old theories of mass mobilisation are becoming obsolete with equal speed. At a time when ideas can spread across the world in the speed of light through the Internet, we may have to have a different methodology for understanding how political movements are formed and how the government can mitigate the risks of politically motivated violence.
