Abstract:
Four subjects, ecology, applied mathematics, sociology and economics, were selected to assess whether there is a citation advantage between journal articles that have an open access (OA) version on the Internet compared to those articles that are exclusively toll access (TA). In two rounds of data collection, citations were counted using the Web of Science and the OA status of articles was determined by using the search tools OAIster, OpenDOAR, Google and Google Scholar. In the first round a purposive sample of 4633 articles for the four subjects from high impact journals were examined, 2280 (

Abstract:
For biomedical research to improve clinical practice, and for funding levels to be sustained, it is increasingly important to understand the pathways from research to clinical practice and to assess the societal impact of research. Approaches to research evaluation through traditional study of journals, journal articles and standard citation analysis, have played comparatively small roles in these developments. In this thesis I critically review how I applied existing methods, and developed a new approach, to study two pathways from research to clinical practice. For Pathway 1, questionnaire s

Citations allow researchers to define relationships across articles and develop arguments by building on the work of others. This study explores citation of theory symbols in Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) academic articles. The term theory symbol is used to define a concept that, after its original publication, is subsequently incorporated by later writers through citation. Exploring the citation history of the seminal publications makes it possible to trace theory symbol use over time and thus to trace its dissemination in the field. Abstract:
This study investigates a range of metrics available when an article is published to see which metrics associate with its eventual citation count. The purposes are to contribute to developing a citation model and to inform policymakers about which predictor variables associate with citations in different fields of science. Despite the complex nature of reasons for citation, some attributes of a paper’s authors, journal, references, abstract, field, country and institutional affiliations, and funding source are known to associate with its citation impact. The main goal of the thesis is to explore basic methods which can be used to find semantically related scientific articles. All the methods are explained in detail, compared and in the end evaluated by the standard metrics. Based on the evaluation, a new method for computing semantic similarity of scientific articles is proposed. The proposed method is based on the current state-of-the-art methods and adds the another important factor for computing similarity - citations. Using citations is important, since they represent a static bond between the articles. Finally, the proposed method is eval

The first part provides quantitative results for the usage of two basic types, integral and non-integral citation. The non-integral type is preferred mainly in biology (91%), whereas astronomy and linguistics do not show such strong preference. In art history, both types are used with similar frequencies. The second part is focused on integral citation and examines instances of its sub-types (verb-
