Abstract:
This study reports the findings of a classroom intervention experiment investigating the effectiveness of explicit instruction in teaching the English articles’ semantic properties (definiteness and specificity) to Hejazi Arabic-speaking learners. Additionally, the study explores whether learners fluctuate (use the instead of a/ an and vice versa) in contexts where the taught semantic properties do not match. Fifty-four Hejazi Arabic-speaking participants were divided into two groups (instructed and control/uninstructed). The instructed group received explicit instruction on specificity and definiteness, since specificity is currently not taught to learners of English whereas definiteness is. The control group received traditional English language lessons with no explicit instruction on article semantics. By comparing the participants’ performance with twenty-three native English speakers, the findings of the study show learners’ sensitivity to specificity in article choice. They further show evidence supporting explicit instruction. The instructed group outperformed the uninstructed group and this effect was sustained until the delayed post-test with respect to average effects. The paper concludes that generative linguistics can inform the language classroom by predicting areas of acquisition difficulty. It also stresses that explicit language instruction is more beneficial than standard classroom instruction in teaching articles. On the basis of the findings, theoretical and pedagogical implications are discussed.

Abstract:
Helgi Gunnlaugsson: Drug use, attitudes and control policies in Iceland. A comparison with the other Nordic countries Studies on the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs have frequently been conducted in Iceland in the past few years. These studies have mostly involved use among youth, so trends in the adult population have not yet been mapped out to the same extent. In this presentation, findings from the first ever general population survey on drug use in Iceland will be presented. Prompted by the Nordic Drug Survey, in which Iceland did not take part, a few questions from that survey were adopted in a survey conducted in Iceland in late 1997. Based on the Nordic comparative figures, it appears that Iceland is in some respects not very different from the other Nordic nations. Yet lifetime prevalence of cannabis use was found to be significantly higher in Iceland than in the other Nordic nations, except for Denmark, which clearly is in a league of its own. However, if the use in the last 6 months is analysed, Iceland is very similar to the other Nordic nations. The consumption pattern, in terms of age and gender, seems also to follow the general pattern found in the other Nordic nations. As for attitudes toward different control measures, it is apparent that the public in all of the Nordic countries seems to be in favour of adopting unconventional control methods in the fight against drugs.

Abstract:
The paper addresses some major misconceptions about article use in English, proceeding from purely syntactic issues to those relating directly to pragmatics. It is based on authentic, perfectly acceptable examples of article use that many Slovenian students of English would describe as ‘odd’ or ‘not in accordance with the rules’. The students’ explanations as to why the examples in question should be ruled out confirm the hypothesis that misconceptions about article use are largely ascribable to an insufficient understanding of grammatical rules. The rules governing article use are often misunderstood due to inaccurate interpretations of the terms defining/restrictive, definite, identifying, specifying, classifying, etc. The commonest mistake is equating defining with definite, and defining/restrictive with identifying, the consequence being the overuse of the definite article. Another important point made in the paper is that article use is a matter of pragmatics. The choice between the definite and indefinite articles reflects the speaker’s decision to present a piece of information as hearer-old or hearer-new respectively.

Abstract:
It has been known since the early work of Bigeleisen that incorporating the Redlich-Teller product rule into isotope-effect equations minimizes the importance of low-frequency vibrations. Similar analysis suggests that errors in low frequencies especially are minimized by the use of the Redlich-Teller rule, though its use improves accuracy at all frequencies. However, in the computation of isotope effects, cancellation between isotopomers caused this advantage to vanish exactly in the case of diatomic reactants or products. It does not do so for all polyatomics, and computational experiments again show use of the Redlich-Teller rule to be preferred.Key words: isotope effect, Bigeleisen equation, Redlich-Teller product rule, formamide, Z-1,3-pentadiene.

Abstract:
This paper adopts the Integrated Contrastive Model (Granger 1996) to an examination of the use of articles in the L2 English written production of L1 speakers of three article-less languages (Mandarin Chinese, Korean and Thai) across four L2 proficiency levels. Data is sourced from the International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English (ICNALE; Ishikawa 2011, 2013), comprising 575 written essays totalling 125,588 words across two writing prompts. Accuracy of zero, indefinite and definite articles is measured using Pica’s (1983) Target Language Use across Bickerton’s (1981) semantic/pragmatic article contexts (generic, specific definite, specific indefinite and non-specific indefinite). The results show two different orders of article accuracy depending on L1 background, as well as effects of writing prompt on the accuracy of certain article forms, and evidence of pseudo-longitudinal development for particular article usages as L2 proficiency increases, although not in all cases. Massive overproduction of indefinite/definite articles in generic contexts is problematic for all three L2 groups regardless of L1 background and L2 proficiency. However, Mandarin L2 English users appear to enjoy a significant advantage in L2 article accuracy over Korean or Thai L2 English users in almost all contexts of use and L2 proficiency levels, providing further potential evidence that the often reported grammaticalisation of definiteness/specificity markers in L1 Mandarin is aiding Mandarin L2 English users’ acquisition of the English article system.

Abstract:
Two studies of aspects of modelling dipole moment functions of XH bonds in small molecules for use in calculating overtone intensities have been undertaken. The first study deals with the fitting of ab initio calculations of the dipole moment at discrete points to a functional form. The two methods that are compared are the use of least-squares regression and the use of interpolating polynomials. The interpolating polynomial method is deemed superior due to its greater efficiency in terms of the number of points necessary to obtain reasonable results. The second study attempts to explain the indifference of calculated overtone intensities to the inclusion of electron correlation in the ab initio calculation of the dipole moment function. It is found that in most cases the influence of electron correlation can be modelled as a function with a very small matrix element, which results in a very small contribution to the overtone intensity.Key words: dipole moment function, vibrational overtone intensities, electron correlation, ab initio calculations.

Tianprasit, Tanatthep. "Promoting the use of the special investigative techniques of Article 20 of the UNTOC to combat organised crimes in Thailand." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2018. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=238555.

Full text
Abstract:
For many years, organised crime has been considered a serious threat to the world, as it affects not only national security but also economic well-being. Moreover, it is also the cause of many serious crimes. Given its nature, it is difficult for law enforcement officials to investigate and obtain evidence which can lead to the prosecution of high-ranking members of organised crime groups. For this reason, in 2000, the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime (UNTOC) was introduced. Under this convention, many measures were provided to fight these serious crimes. The use of special investigative techniques, such as controlled delivery, electronic surveillance and undercover operations, has been recognised in Article 20 of the UNTOC. Therefore, members of the UNTOC, including Thailand, have to incorporate these special investigative techniques into domestic law. However, due to the different interpretations of the convention in each country, the effectiveness of the use of these special investigative techniques may vary. Furthermore, the use of these special investigative techniques may have an inevitable effect on human rights. Notably, this thesis reflects the law at April 2018. After the comparative study of the use of special investigative techniques between England and Wales and Thailand, it could be seen that the former has a better legislative approach than Thailand. In the case of special organisations to combat serious crimes, the National Crime Agency (NCA) of the UK has a higher budget, more staff and better transparency than the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) of Thailand. Moreover, in England and Wales, at the national and regional levels, the Human Rights Act 1998 and the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR) provide double protection against the misuse of the special investigative techniques which are operated by law enforcement officials. On the contrary, in Thailand, although human rights are recognised in both the Constitution and Criminal Procedure Code, the Supreme Court is not greatly concerned about these rights, nor about the unlawful investigative proceedings. At the regional level, the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration (AHRD) cannot be compared to the ECHR, because it does not have supranational institutions like the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) of the ECHR to protect the rights of the people of ASEAN. Last, but not least, in practice the patronage system and corruption are also considered to be the main problems in the investigation bureaux of the country and may affect the use of special investigative techniques.

Marzani, Jessica. "A New Use for Error Analysis: the Assessment of the Linguistic Skills of Trainee Interpreters Working into a B Language – A Case Study Focusing on English Article Use." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2017. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/12697/.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of my study is to show that error analysis can be considered as an invaluable tool to help interpreting trainers detect the linguistic problems their trainees still have to tackle and help the trainees solve those problems. This argument is demonstrated by means of a case study that involved seven Russian-native interpreting trainees who were asked to interpret a text into English simultaneously. The study focused on a specific linguistic class of items, i.e. the English article system. Error analysis was applied to the performances of the subjects of the study, to show that they actually encounter problems in the production of English articles, and that error analysis can help the interpreting trainer detect the article categories his or her trainees need to work on. The dissertation begins with a review of the existing literature on interpreting studies (Chapter 2). Chapter 3 focuses on second language acquisition, and includes issues such as native language interference as well as a brief description of the few existing research studies that combine interpreting studies with second language acquisition. Chapter 4 includes a definition of error analysis and an overview on the studies of interpreting that have applied error analysis to the performance of interpreters. Chapter 5 deals with the linguistic category of definiteness and the differences between English and Russian in terms of the expression of definiteness, which serves as a framework for the case study of the following chapter. The main difficulties Russian native speakers encounter when producing the English articles are also discussed in Chapter 5. In Chapter 6 a case study on the problems with articles Russian native speakers encounter when interpreting simultaneously into English is presented. Finally, in Chapter 7, the conclusions of the study are drawn and proposals for further studies are formulated.

The article discusses the use of former agricultural lands for afforestation. The fertility of these lands is reduced, low biological activity of soils is noted, the content of substances inhibiting the growth of woody plants is observed. The presence of a compacted subsurface layer contributes to the fact that the root systems of trees are formed by surface and do not reach groundwater. Created forest plantations usually experience a water supply crisis, they die off in dry years, they are easily exposed to diseases and pests. Possible ways of solving problems associated with afforestation in this category of land are suggested.

Abstract:
Fake news on social media is a major challenge and studies have shown that fake news can propagate exponentially quickly in early stages. Therefore, we focus on early detection of fake news, and consider that only news article text is available at the time of detection, since additional information such as user responses and propagation patterns can be obtained only after the news spreads. However, we find historical user responses to previous articles are available and can be treated as soft semantic labels, that enrich the binary label of an article, by providing insights into why the article must be labeled as fake. We propose a novel Two-Level Convolutional Neural Network with User Response Generator (TCNN-URG) where TCNN captures semantic information from article text by representing it at the sentence and word level, and URG learns a generative model of user response to article text from historical user responses which it can use to generate responses to new articles in order to assist fake news detection. We conduct experiments on one available dataset and a larger dataset collected by ourselves. Experimental results show that TCNN-URG outperforms the baselines based on prior approaches that detect fake news from article text alone.

Full text
Abstract:
The article reviews and analyzes the promotion of Ukrainian publishing houses on Facebook during quarantine in 2020. The study’s main objective is content and its types, which were used for representing on Facebook. We found out that going live and posting a text with a picture was most popular. The phenomenon of live video is tightly connected to the quarantine phenomenon. Though, not every publishing house was able to go live permanently or at least regular. However, simple text with a picture is the most uncomplicated content to post and the most popular. Ukrainian publishers also use UGC (User Generated Content), situational content, and different contexts. The biggest problem for Ukrainian publishers is continual strategic work with social media for promotion. During quarantine, social media became the first channel for communication with customers and subscribers. Therefore promotion on the Internet and in social media indeed should become equivalent to offline promotion.
