Tianprasit, Tanatthep. "Promoting the use of the special investigative techniques of Article 20 of the UNTOC to combat organised crimes in Thailand." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2018. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=238555.

Full text
Abstract:
For many years, organised crime has been considered a serious threat to the world, as it affects not only national security but also economic well-being. Moreover, it is also the cause of many serious crimes. Given its nature, it is difficult for law enforcement officials to investigate and obtain evidence which can lead to the prosecution of high-ranking members of organised crime groups. For this reason, in 2000, the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime (UNTOC) was introduced. Under this convention, many measures were provided to fight these serious crimes. The use of special investigative techniques, such as controlled delivery, electronic surveillance and undercover operations, has been recognised in Article 20 of the UNTOC. Therefore, members of the UNTOC, including Thailand, have to incorporate these special investigative techniques into domestic law. However, due to the different interpretations of the convention in each country, the effectiveness of the use of these special investigative techniques may vary. Furthermore, the use of these special investigative techniques may have an inevitable effect on human rights. Notably, this thesis reflects the law at April 2018. After the comparative study of the use of special investigative techniques between England and Wales and Thailand, it could be seen that the former has a better legislative approach than Thailand. In the case of special organisations to combat serious crimes, the National Crime Agency (NCA) of the UK has a higher budget, more staff and better transparency than the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) of Thailand. Moreover, in England and Wales, at the national and regional levels, the Human Rights Act 1998 and the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR) provide double protection against the misuse of the special investigative techniques which are operated by law enforcement officials. On the contrary, in Thailand, although human rights are recognised in both the Constitution and Criminal Procedure Code, the Supreme Court is not greatly concerned about these rights, nor about the unlawful investigative proceedings. At the regional level, the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration (AHRD) cannot be compared to the ECHR, because it does not have supranational institutions like the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) of the ECHR to protect the rights of the people of ASEAN. Last, but not least, in practice the patronage system and corruption are also considered to be the main problems in the investigation bureaux of the country and may affect the use of special investigative techniques.

Marzani, Jessica. "A New Use for Error Analysis: the Assessment of the Linguistic Skills of Trainee Interpreters Working into a B Language – A Case Study Focusing on English Article Use." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2017. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/12697/.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of my study is to show that error analysis can be considered as an invaluable tool to help interpreting trainers detect the linguistic problems their trainees still have to tackle and help the trainees solve those problems. This argument is demonstrated by means of a case study that involved seven Russian-native interpreting trainees who were asked to interpret a text into English simultaneously. The study focused on a specific linguistic class of items, i.e. the English article system. Error analysis was applied to the performances of the subjects of the study, to show that they actually encounter problems in the production of English articles, and that error analysis can help the interpreting trainer detect the article categories his or her trainees need to work on. The dissertation begins with a review of the existing literature on interpreting studies (Chapter 2). Chapter 3 focuses on second language acquisition, and includes issues such as native language interference as well as a brief description of the few existing research studies that combine interpreting studies with second language acquisition. Chapter 4 includes a definition of error analysis and an overview on the studies of interpreting that have applied error analysis to the performance of interpreters. Chapter 5 deals with the linguistic category of definiteness and the differences between English and Russian in terms of the expression of definiteness, which serves as a framework for the case study of the following chapter. The main difficulties Russian native speakers encounter when producing the English articles are also discussed in Chapter 5. In Chapter 6 a case study on the problems with articles Russian native speakers encounter when interpreting simultaneously into English is presented. Finally, in Chapter 7, the conclusions of the study are drawn and proposals for further studies are formulated.

Full text
Abstract:
Male sex workers (MSW) in the Dominican Republic (DR) have multiple sexual partners, including personal and client-relationships, and are disproportionately affected by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We examined the prevalence of condomless anal and/or vaginal intercourse (CI) among MSW in the DR as a function of social network factors. Self-report surveys and social network interviews were administered to MSW recruited through venue-based sampling (N = 220). A generalized linear model was used to complete a Poisson Regression model and identify variables significantly associated with the outcome of interest. CI was more common with female (28.3%) than with male partners (4.9%). Factors associated with CI with the last female partner included older age of MSW, CI with the last male partner, having a stable female partner (a consistent or main partner), and having ≥1 family member in the participants’ social network. Partner and social network characteristics associated with CI among MSW suggest the utility of dyadic and network interventions to reduce HIV risk.

Full text
Abstract:
Remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) - an effective tool for managing naturalresources, is quite common application in establishing thematic maps. However, the application of this modern technology in natural resource management has not yet been popular in Vietnam, particularly mapping the land use/cover. Currently, land use/cover map is constructed as traditional methods and gets limitations of management counting due to time-consuming for mapping andsynthesis the status of land use/cover. Hence, information on the map is often outdated and inaccurate. The main objective of this study is to upgrade the accuracies in mapping current perennialcrops in Chu Se District, Gia Lai Province in Vietnam by interpreted NDVI index (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) from Landsat 8-OLI (Operational Land Imager). The results of studyis satisfied the urgent of practical requirement and scientific research. There are 3 types of perennial industrial plants in the study area including rubber, coffee, and pepper, in which most coffee isgrown, with an area of over 10,000 hectares. The results also show that integration of remote sensing and GIS technology enables to map current management and distribution of perennial industrialplants timely and accurately. This application is fully consistent with the trend of the world, and in accordance with regulations of established land use/cover map, and the process could be appliedat other districts /towns or in higher administrative units.

Abstract:
The cyber domain poses great challenges to the existing international law framework, resulting in the international community's frustration in finding sustainable long-term solutions to the international regulation of cyberspace. This thesis reflects upon foundational concepts of the jus ad bellum framework, such as State sovereignty and the use of force. The principal issue discussed in this thesis is the emergence of a customary international norm prohibiting violations of sovereignty, essentially targeting lowintensity cyber attacks. Violations of sovereignty were classified as a primary rule in Rule 4 of the Tallinn Manual 2.0 (2017), which sparked a debate about the rule's true existence as a customary norm. This thesis assesses whether violations of sovereignty can currently be extrapolated as a primary rule of customary international law. It thereafter discusses the need for such a rule, as well as the risks of such a rule emerging as a customary norm.

Ahlqvist, Malin. "Alternatives to the use of unequal voting rights : a propos the potential threat to their effectiveness as a takeover defense." Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Management and Economics, 2004. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-2179.

Full text
Abstract:

Background: The origin of this study was the negotiations around a EU takeover directive, aimed at making the market for corporate control more open. One of the proposals was to neutralise shares carrying multiple rights in takeover situations when a potential acquirer obtains 75% of the total share capital. For many Swedish ownership groups, this would mean that the system of unequal voting rights, constituting an important defense to their control, would decrease in effectiveness. In the middle of writing this thesis, an EU agreement was finally reached, making the proposal voluntary to adopt. The imminent threat posed to the Swedish system faded, but has though not disappeared since the present rules anew will be brought under inspection in five years.

Purpose: To give examples on potential tactics to adopt if unequal voting rights would risk to become neutralised in takeover situations, these tactics dependent on two different scenarios: (1) Present Swedish ownership structure is considered advantageous for the country and thus to be remained or (2) A more open market for takeovers is desired. Course of action: Interviews have been conducted with parties within Swedish trade and industry, partly in order to assess the value and necessity of the content of this thesis.

Conclusion: The threat of an abolition of the unequal voting rights is not perceived as imminent by parties within Swedish trade and industry and few alternative resistance strategies are suggested. If current Swedish ownership structure is to be remained, the author proposes competition-reducing defenses, if a more open market for takeovers is aimed for, auction-inducing resistance strategies. The choice of how to proceed should depend on how afraid the Swedish Government and Swedish companies are of a change in present ownership structure.

Jeon, Yunju. "The use of English articles by L2 speakers." Thesis, University of Essex, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.573019.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the use of English articles by speakers of languages with no articles (Korean) and speakers of languages with articles (Spanish). Previous proposals concerning omission and substitution in the use of English articles by L2 speakers are critically evaluated, in particular those of Ionin et al (2004, 2008) on article substitution and Trenkic (2007) on article omission. An additional observation is made - that there is an asymmetry in the degree of variability in the use of the and a that has not been dealt with by previous accounts. The implicit assumption that article-less languages do not instantiate the grammatical category of determiner is challenged and it is shown that article-less languages such as Korean do in fact have a determiner phrase, which has an identical structure to that of the determiner phrase of languages with articles such as English and Spanish. Borer's (2005) exo-skeletal model of Universal Grammar is adopted to defend such a position. The notion of range assignment in Borer's model is introduced and is proposed as a source of L1 transfer. A specific proposal is made concerning the nature of this transfer: adult L2 learners fluctuate permanently between the L1 range assignment mechanism and the L2 range assignment mechanism - a phenomenon I term the Permanent Fluctuation Hypothesis. This hypothesis is tested through three experimental tasks - a forced-choice elicitation task, a spontaneous oral production task and a spontaneous written production task. These were completed by Korean and Spanish learners of English at three proficiency levels - upper intermediate, advanced, and very advanced. The data show a similar pattern of substitution and omission as in previous studies. But this pattern is given an alternative explanation from the perspective of Borer's model of grammar and the Permanent Fluctuation Hypothesis. It is shown that the asymmetry between the and a cannot be explained by the proposals of either Ionin et al or of Trenkic, but can only be successfully explained by the account given in this study.

Zhang, Lei. "A study of functional units for information use of scholarly journal articles." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/34015.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aims to enhance reading effectiveness and efficiency by presenting the readers with the text in the article that is most relevant to a particular information task, rather than presenting the article in its entirety. It applies the idea of the functional unit, the smallest information unit with a distinct function within four major components of scholarly journal articles — Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion. First, through a review and analysis of the literature and validation through user surveys, 41 functional units within the four components were identified. Also identified were the relationships between the individual functional units and five information use tasks, and furthermore the relationships among a set of functional units for a particular task. The functional units were classified into three categories (primary, related, additional related) according to how useful they were for each task. Based on this taxonomy, a prototype journal reading system was designed and implemented. Thirty 3rd and 4th year psychology students participated in an experimental study using the prototype system. Content analysis was used to analyze qualitative data collected from retrospective interviews, questionnaire open-ended questions, and screen recordings. A statistical analysis of quantitative data collected via rating scales, logging of time and highlights was also carried out. The answers to comprehension questions were assessed first by content analysis and then by statistical analysis. Participants using the prototype system were significantly more satisfied with the information obtained, highlighted more relevant text, and answered more fully the comprehension questions. The use of functional units was effective in enabling people to focus on specific information and use pieces of relevant information across the article, but not necessarily to move from more relevant to less relevant information. Participants using the prototype system also felt significantly more efficient in obtaining the information. The use of functional units was efficient in enabling people to read less or read selectively. The signaling of functional units seemed to be more effective and efficient for the tasks requiring use of information scattered across articles. This research suggests that information within an article can be organized and presented to benefit readers’ information use.

Emslie, Hazel Carr. "Young children's use of the definite and indefinite articles in referring expressions." Thesis, Durham University, 1986. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/6833/.

Full text
Abstract:
It is argued that the theoretical framework used in earlier studies of children's use of the articles is inadequate, failing in some important ways to capture even normal adult usage. A new theory of article usage is proposed which is based on the concept of mental models. Previous psychological investigations are evaluated in the light of this theory and the major issues raised are investigated experimentally. Nine experiments involving approximately 310 three to seven-year old children and 65 parents are reported. The experiments were designed to investigate the effects of two main factors on children’s use of the articles, namely, the knowledge of the listener and the composition of the referential array. Different kinds of tasks were employed which required responses varying from article plus noun to single sentences and extended narratives. The results of the experiments showed that although young children can, and do, take into account the status of an object within a referential array, the over-riding factor in their choice of referring expression is their perception of the knowledge of the listener. When they judge that the listener's model does not contain the same number and kind of objects as their own (the listener is ignorant), children will use an indefinite description to introduce a referent regardless of the status of that referent in the array. However, when the listener is knowledgeable indefinite descriptions are reserved for one of several identical or similar objects and definite descriptions are used for objects which are known to be unique in the listener's model. Other factors which influence children’s use of the articles include the difficulty of the task, the child’s perception of the purpose of the task, and the range of descriptions in the child's linguistic repertoire.

Full text
Abstract:
Story-focused news articles are a different type of news articles, containing more visual and interactive elements, developed in order to engage a younger audience for online newspapers. User engagement has been defined as the “emotional, cognitive and behavioral connection between a user and a resource”, and different metrics are used to track the user engagement of the readers on these articles. However, there is no prior research on which of these metrics describe user engagement in the most accurate way. This study therefore aims to find out what metrics to use when measuring user engagement on story-focused articles through interviewing readers of three different story-focused articles and compare their engagement levels with actual metric values tracked. The results show that two out of the three articles can be considered engaging according to the definition, and the metrics they both have in common is high values of scroll depth, low values of bounce rate and high values of page views. The study therefore concludes that a combination of these three metrics describes user engagement in the most accurate way possible. Furthermore, both the engaging articles have a large number of images, galleries and videos compared to the non-engaging article, which indicates that visual elements in different forms are a winning concept for story-focused articles.

Gentry, Wendy Ann. "Citation Context Analysis of Theory Use in Instructional Design and Technology Academic Articles." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/82931.

Full text
Abstract:
Citations allow researchers to define relationships across articles and develop arguments by building on the work of others. This study explores citation of theory symbols in Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) academic articles. The term theory symbol is used to define a concept that, after its original publication, is subsequently incorporated by later writers through citation. Exploring the citation history of the seminal publications makes it possible to trace theory symbol use over time and thus to trace its dissemination in the field. A typology of theory symbol use in IDT academic publication is developed through a citation context analysis (CCA) of a sample of articles published in Educational Technology Research and Development (ETRD) and its predecessor journals (1953–2012) which incorporate theory symbols through citation. This analysis contributes to an understanding of how theory has shaped IDT disciplinary knowledge and augments discourse analysis and bibliometrics by examining the context in which theory is incorporated into academic publication.

Awarded By:University of New South Wales. Languages & Linguistics, 2009. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/44525.

Full text
Abstract:
Articles continue to be one of the most puzzling aspects of English grammar. This thesis investigates article use variation in two groups of English varieties: Inner Circle and Outer Circle. The first group, comprising British English, American English, Australian English and New Zealand English, represents English varieties in their traditional contexts. The second group, consisting of Singapore English, Indian English, Philippine English and Kenyan English, represents varieties which are deeply entrenched in their communities due to colonial roots. The study is premised on the naturalness of corpus data. Three corpus-based analyses were conducted to investigate articles and their frequency, collocation and usage types. The frequency analysis revealed that articles are idiosyncratically used by the varieties with no clear divide between the two groups. Text types, on the other hand, emerged as a more powerful determinant of the observed frequencies. It was found that fewer articles were used in spoken language. In the collocational analysis, the varieties were found to favour different complementation patterns for two-word and multiple-world clusters. The Inner Circle varieties, however, shared more complementation patterns among them, demonstrating greater stability in terms of variation. Finally the analysis of usage types discovered ‘marked’ or untypical patterns of use in the Outer Circle group’s structural and situational definites. A number of untypical usages of first-mention/quantitative 'a/an' were also found in this group. In the same analysis, a case study of ‘house’ uncovered a few marked uses of ??, which signalled the null form but not the zero article. Although the collective findings in this study indicate that article use in both groups of varieties has more similarities than differences, the latter leave more impression on observers. These differences can be attributed to such diverse factors as text types, socio-cultural content of collocates, specificity, recategorisation of countness, indiscriminate rule application and ungrammaticality. Theoretically, however, the variation can be captured by the application of Chesterman’s three composite meanings of definiteness – locatability, inclusiveness and extensivity – and their permutations. As an instance of nativisation, article use in the Outer Circle is limited in its diffusion. The observed innovations rarely creep into more formal registers.

Abstract:
Recommender systems are widely used in websites and applications to help users find relevant content based on their interests. Graph neural networks achieved state- of-the- art results in the field of recommender systems, working on data represented in the form of a graph. However, most graph- based solutions hold challenges regarding computational complexity or the ability to generalize to new users. Therefore, we propose a novel graph- based recommender system, by modifying Simple Graph Convolution, an approach for efficient graph node classification, and add the capability of generalizing to new users. We build our proposed recommender system for recommending the articles of Peltarion Knowledge Center. By incorporating two data sources, implicit user feedback based on pageview data as well as the content of articles, we propose a hybrid recommender solution. Throughout our experiments, we compare our proposed solution with a matrix factorization approach as well as a popularity- based and a random baseline, analyse the hyperparameters of our model, and examine the capability of our solution to give recommendations to new users who were not part of the training data set. Our model results in slightly lower, but similar Mean Average Precision and Mean Reciprocal Rank scores to the matrix factorization approach, and outperforms the popularity- based and random baselines. The main advantages of our model are computational efficiency and its ability to give relevant recommendations to new users without the need for retraining the model, which are key features for real- world use cases.

Abstract:
This work aims at redefining the principles underlying the identification and interpretation of unmarked determination of the noun in English. It is based on a corpus consisting of press articles and radio and television broadcasts. The criterion of commutation allows a clear distinction between the absence of any article, and the zero article. The former is found especially in expressions where the noun is only a pre-substantive, deprived of internal incidence and thus incapable of referring. The latter signals a genuine operation of determination, as opposed to the mere designation of the notion, insofar as the noun phrase is provided with a reference : here we have a real zero marker, a significate with a null signifier. The zero article comes first in the sequence of determinations. It represents an immanent prehension of the notion as it crosses the threshold between tongue and discourse. It gives an interior view of the referent, devoid of any outlines, which is found notably in the mperfective view of process nouns. The co-utterer bases his reconstruction of the reference, which can be prepared in advance, on the saliency of the referent in the context. The zero article in itself is neither specific nor generic : at the level of tongue, it represents an extensive movement which stretches from the particular to the general. The theory is applied to three cases : the translation from English to French of the absence of marked determination ; the apparent absence of articles in newspaper headlines ; zero determination in A. Proulx’s novel “The Shipping News”. These investigations confirm the absence of article/zero article dichotomy and the fundamental value of the latter

Abstract:
For biomedical research to improve clinical practice, and for funding levels to be sustained, it is increasingly important to understand the pathways from research to clinical practice and to assess the societal impact of research. Approaches to research evaluation through traditional study of journals, journal articles and standard citation analysis, have played comparatively small roles in these developments. In this thesis I critically review how I applied existing methods, and developed a new approach, to study two pathways from research to clinical practice. For Pathway 1, questionnaire surveys of clinicians' views on journals read to inform their clinical practice, and comparisons with impact factors, revealed that a few journals were read widely and considered important by clinicians. Relationships between journal importance and impact factor were complex. For Pathway 2, I applied a novel methodology to identify important citations to four key research papers in an attempt to trace important citations through numerous citing generations. My findings included: few cited papers were important to the citing papers; the number of citation occasions within the citing paper correlated strongly with a cited paper's importance; self-citations were also important; and it was feasible to trace through a series of generations of citations. Evidence of societal impact of the four key research papers examined in my studies included important papers in subsequent generations cited in clinical guidelines, many of which were international. In assessing the impact of my own studies, I found Pathway 1 papers had societal impact on research evaluation methodology; journal editorial policy; and medical library provision policy and practice. Societal impacts of the new methodology, Pathway 2, included informing further methodological development and research evaluation. My portfolio, together with my critical review, adds understanding and provides additional data to current assessment methods of wider impacts of research, and bases for further studies.

Abstract:

Paris, EHESS, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008EHES0054.

Abstract:
The general aim of the present thesis is to develop the first stage of an argumentative grammar of the sentence supported by the description of the French articles LE and UN, and Spanish EL and UN. By the term "argumentative grammar" we designate the knowledge that allows to predict the meaning of a sentence in the argumentative layer of sense. We suppose that two semiotic layers coexist in the sense. Of utterances: one relevant to the study of reference and truth conditions, and another one formed only by discourses (that we will assume of an argumentative nature) and relationships between discourses. Our work attempts to describe this argumentative layer in an explicit way by integrating the Semantic Blocks Theory and the Theory of Polyphony. Our analysis of the article leads to the following main conclusions: firstly, that the argumentative grammar of the sentence must simultaneously take into account the theoretical objects of these two theories and secondly, that this grammar is independent of referential phenomena

Abstract:
Health and environmental risks associated with emissions of hazardous chemicals from articles, including everyday consumer products such as clothes and toys, have become widely acknowledged internationally, particularly in the EU. This thesis contributes to new understandings of how these risks are currently managed within the EU and recommends actions for ensuring a safe and sustainable use of chemicals in articles. Paper I provides an overview and comparative analysis of regulatory strategies for managing risks of chemicals in articles in the EU. The in-depth analysis, which is focused on the Toys Safety Directive, the RoHS Directive, and REACH, shows that the legislations differ significantly. Differences include e.g. what criteria are used for the selection of substances to be targeted for regulation, and the kind of requirements and restrictions applied to the selected substances. It is concluded that product-specific directives are important complements to REACH in order to ensure a safe use of chemicals in articles. Paper II evaluates to what extent the regulation of chemicals in articles under REACH is coherent with the rules concerning chemicals in the Sewage Sludge Directive (SSD) and the Water Framework Directive (WFD). The results show that the majority of the chemicals that are prioritized for phase-out under the WFD or for concentration restrictions in sludge and soil under the SSD are allowed to be used in articles according to REACH. In order to avoid end-of-pipe problems and to increase resource efficiency, it is argued that it is necessary to minimize the input of chemicals identified as hazardous to health or the environment into articles. Paper III aims to clarify what the substitution principle means and how it can reasonably be applied as part of chemical policies. A general definition is proposed that gives equal weight to hazard, functionality and economical considerations, while at the same time recognizing that the aim of the substitution principle is to reduce hazards to human health and the environment. This paper also summarizes major methods to promote and implement the principle, discusses legislative approaches with regard to their ability to promote substitution of hazardous chemicals, and makes proposals for an efficient implementation of the principle.

Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate the acquisition of the four non-generic uses of the English definite article the by Arabic learners of English in Saudi Arabia. These non-generic uses included textual, situational, cultural and structural. This study had three goals: (1) to determine whether these uses are acquired in a certain sequence; (2) to explore which one of these uses is the most difficult and the easiest in learning; (3) to investigate whether one or two of the uses are overused. The instrument consisted of 59 sentences adopted from Liu and Gleason (2002). There were 40 instances for required uses and 20 sentences for obligatory nonuse (5 instances for each use). The subjects were instructed to insert the where they deemed it necessary. The participants were 45 male undergraduate English major students, whose ages ranged from 18 to 22 with a Mean age of 21.6, from a university in Saudi Arabia. They were divided into three groups (15 students each) based on their proficiency levels as follows; low intermediate, intermediate, and advanced. The results revealed developmental trends in the acquisition of the non-generic uses of the English definite article related to proficiency. Specifically, the advanced group showed significantly higher accuracy of use in all four functions. Regarding the four functions, the order of acquisition, based on level of accuracy was as follows: situational, cultural, structural and textual. The study results are discussed in view of their pedagogical implications for the teaching of the definite article to Saudi learners of English.

Abstract:
This research aims to shed light on the relationship between the constituent objects of a particular activity and the subjects who do it; in this case, sport. To carry out this project, three sporting activities chosen for their different internal logic are being considered through a transdisciplinary approach combining the methods and concepts of ethnology, sociology and the science of motor action (motor praxeology): rhythmic gymnastics, basket-ball, and sprint kayak. This ethnographic study set in a practical situation aims to describe and analyze the importance of the relations to objects in the process of subjectification of the sportsman/woman. A look at the material culture specific to each discipline reveals not only that it is the major substratum of motor behaviors, but also that the sensory, motor and emotional relations that the subject establishes with the objects - sometimes with a remarkable intensity - affect him/her to the utmost in his/her subjectivity

Abstract:
Within the realm of the natural sciences there are different written genres for interested readers to explore. Popular science articles aim to explain advanced scientific research to a non-expert audience while research articles target the science experts themselves. This study explores these genres in some detail in order to identify linguistic differences between them. Using two corpora consisting of over 200 000 words each, a corpus linguistic analysis was used to perform both quantitative and qualitative examinations of the two genres. The methods of analysis included word frequency, keyword, concordance, cluster and collocation analyses. Also, part-of-speech tagging was used as a complement to distinguish word class use between the two genres. The results show that popular science articles feature personal pronouns to a much greater extent compared to research articles, which contain more noun repetition and specific terminology overall. In addition, the keywords proved to be significant for the respective genres, both in and out of their original context as well as in word clusters, forming word constructions typical of each genre. Overall, the study showed that while both genres are very much related through their roots in natural science research they accomplish the task of disseminating scientific information using different linguistic approaches.

Abstract:
This empirical exploratory study quantitatively analyzed content similarity indices (potential plagiarism) from a corpus consisting of 360 dissertations and 360 published articles. The population was defined using the filtering search criteria human resource development, training and development, organizational development, career development, or HRD. This study described in detail the process of collecting content similarity analysis (CSA) metadata using Turnitin software (www.turnitin.com). This researcher conducted robust descriptive statistics, a Wilcoxon signed-rank statistic between the similarity indices before and after false positives were excluded, and a multinomial logistic regression analysis to predict levels of plagiarism for the dissertations and the published articles. The corpus of dissertations had an adjusted rate of document similarity (potential plagiarism) of M = 9%, (SD = 6%) with 88.1% of the dissertations in the low level of plagiarism, 9.7% in the high and 2.2% in the excessive group. The corpus of published articles had an adjusted rate of document similarity (potential plagiarism) of M = 11%, (SD = 10%) with 79.2% of the published articles in the low level of plagiarism, 12.8% in the high and 8.1% in the excessive group. Most of the difference between the dissertations and published articles were attributed to plagiarism-of-self issues which were absent in the dissertations. Statistics were also conducted which returned a statistically significant justification for employing the investigative process of removing false positives, thereby adjusting the Turnitin results. This study also found two independent variables (reference and word counts) that predicted dissertation membership in the high (.15-.24) and excessive level (.25-1.00) of plagiarism and published article membership in the excessive level (.25-1.00) of plagiarism. I used multinomial logistic regression to establish the optimal prediction model. The multinomial logistic regression results for the dissertations returned a Nagelkerke pseudo R2 of .169 and for the published articles a Nagelkerke pseudo R2 .095.

Al-Hattawi, Mohammad Saeed Has. "Arrest and provisional detention : the obligations of the UAE under Article 14 of the Arab Charter on Human Rights." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/28191.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the compatibility of UAE law on arrest and provisional detention with Article 14 ArCHR. Given the lack of any report by the UAE on the measures which they have taken to give effect to the rights recognised in the ArCHR and the absence of effective institutions under the ArCHR to provide authoritative interpretation of the Charter’s Articles, this thesis advances an interpretation of Article 14, drawing on the interpretation of Article 9 ICCPR under the HRC and Article 5 ECHR under ECtHR. In the case of the ICCPR, this is because the wording is similar and it is a universal instrument to which some parties to the Arab Charter are also parties. In the case of the ECHR, it is because the words are similar and the Strasbourg Court has considered aspects of the interpretation and application of those provisions in a number of contexts. This considered interpretation will be of assistance to decision makers in the UAE and other parties to the ArCHR. This thesis’ key finding is that, while UAE law on arrest and provisional detention is compliant with Article 14 ArCHR or, arguably, so in many respects, there are other incompatible aspects. In particular, the Public Prosecutor, rather than a court deciding some key matters means that UAE law fails to comply with the right to be brought promptly before a judge or other judicial officer and the right to have the lawfulness of the arrest or detention decided quickly by a court. Accordingly, it recommends that the UAE achieves compliance by requiring that the above-mentioned procedures are best undertaken by a court. This is guided by the UK system because of the ways in which it complies with the requirements of the ECHR provides lessons for the UAE’s implementation of Article 14 ArCHR.
