Abstract:
The scenarios for journal articles that contain more than one language are no longer (and never really were) limited to having an article’s title, abstract, and keywords translated to additional languages. Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS) currently has a variety of structures for tagging articles that are in multiple languages or have substantial amounts of content in more than one language. However, these structures are not all coherent and are not up to the tasks of handling some common use cases. A subcommittee of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) JATS Standing Committee (with participation from members of the Standards Tag Suite (STS) and Book Interchange Tag Suite (BITS) committees and some other invited experts) was formed, in 2021, with the goal of recommending changes to JATS to enable it to usefully encode multilingual articles. The subcommittee has recommended a set of changes that introduce new structures that can be available to JATS users who need them while minimizing the burden JATS users who rarely deal with multilingual content. Most of these changes are backward compatible with earlier versions of JATS. These changes are currently a work in progress and may become available in a future version of JATS. This paper presents a proposal for improving JATS to better support tagging multilingual articles with the hope of garnering feedback and suggestions from the JATS community.

Abstract:
News articles generated by artificial intelligence rather than human reporters are referred to as automated journalism. This thesis explores how to create a trustworthy representation of news articles that mainly are generated by algorithmic decisions. The hypothesis of this thesis takes the background (characteristics of the underlying system design) and the foreground (millennials news consumption behaviour) contexts into consideration in order to provide an optimal approach for trustworthy representation of auto-generated articles. A theory about algorithmic transparency in the news media has been investigated to reveal information about the systems selection processes. The principles of glanceability and the heuristic principles are applied to proposed design solutions (interactive features). The outcomes show that newsreaders are positive towards a system that is trying to encourage them to fact-check the articles. Additionally, the outcomes also contributed to the understanding of how newsreaders can consume auto-generated news.

Abstract:
Nous étudions ensuite l'identification non paramétrique du modèle et effectuons une estimation semi-paramétrique sur des données provenant de l'enquête de l'Institut Français de l'Environnement de 2004<br>In this thesis, I develop new econometric methods to test and relax statistical or equilibrium restrictions that are commonly assumed in popular industrial organization models including the random coefficient logit model, entry games, and optimal contracts. I then apply these methods to investigate how the usual assumptions affect the results obtained in several pertinent empirical examples. This thesis is organized into three chapters. The first chapter of my thesis is entitled "Testing and Relaxing Distributional Assumptions on Random Coefficients in Demand Models''. This chapter is co-authored with two fellow graduate students Hippolyte Boucher and Gökçe Gökkoca. We provide a method to test and relax the distributional assumptions on random coefficients in the differentiated products demand model initiated by Berry (1994) and Berry, Levinsohn and Pakes (1995). This model is the workhorse model for demand estimation with market-level data and it uses random coefficients to account for unobserved preference heterogeneity. In this chapter, we provide a formal moment-based specification test on the distribution of random coefficients, which allows researchers to test the chosen specification (for instance normality) without re-estimating the model under a more flexible parametrization. The moment conditions (or equivalently the instruments) chosen for the test are designed to maximize the power of the test when the RC distribution is misspecified. By exploiting the duality between estimation and testing, we show that these instruments can also improve the estimation of the BLP model under a flexible parametrization (here, we consider the case of the Gaussian mixture). Finally, we validate our approach with Monte Carlo simulations and an empirical application using data on car purchases in Germany. The second chapter is entitled: "Moment Inequalities for Entry Games with HeterogeneousTypes". This chapter is coauthored with my advisor Christian Bontemps and Rohit Kumar. We develop new methods to simplify the estimation of entry games when the equilibrium selection mechanism is unrestricted. In particular, we develop an algorithm that allows us to recursively select a relevant subset of inequalities that sharply characterize the set of admissible set of parameters. Then, we propose a way to circumvent the problem of deriving an easy-to-compute and competitive critical value by smoothing the minimum function. In our case, it allows us to obtain a pivotal test statistic that eliminates ``numerically” the non-binding moments. We show that we recover a consistent confidence region by letting the smoothing parameter increase with the sample size. Interestingly, we show that our procedure can easily be adapted to the case with covariates including continuous ones. Finally, we conduct full-scale Monte Carlo simulations to assess the performance of our new estimation procedure. The third chapter is entitled "Identification and Estimation of Incentive Contracts under Asymmetric Information: an application to the French Water Sector". This chapter has its roots in a project Christian Bontemps and David Martimort started many years ago. We develop a Principal-Agent model to represent management contracting for public-service delivery. A firm (the Agent) has private knowledge of its marginal cost of production. The local public authority (the Principal) cares about the consumers' net surplus from consuming the services and the (weighted) firm's profit. Contractual negotiation is modeled as the choice by the privately informed firm within a menu of options determining both the unit-price charged to consumers and the fixed fee. Our theoretical model characterizes optimal contracting in this environment. We then explicitly study the nonparametric identification of the model and perform a semi-parametric estimation on a dataset coming from the 2004 wave of a survey from the French environment Institute

Abstract:
Large data sets are difficult to visualize. For a human to find structures and understand the data, good visualization tools are required. In this project a technique will be developed that makes it possible for a user to look at complex data at different scales. This technique is obvious when viewing geographical data where zooming in and out gives a good feeling for the spatial relationships in map data or satellite images. However, for other types of data it is not obvious how much scaling should be done. In this project, an experimental application is developed that visualizes data in multiple dimensions from a large news article database. Using this experimental application, the user can select multiple keywords on different axis and then can create a visualization containing news articles with those keywords. The user is able to move around the visualization. If the camera is far away from the document icons then they are clustered using red coloured spheres. If the user moves the camera closer to the clusters they will pop up into single document icons. If the camera is very close to the document icons it is possible to read the news articles

Hunston, Susan. "Evaluation in experimental research articles." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 1989. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/912/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines evaluation in experimental research articles in terms of the meanings made and their contribution to the organisation of the articles. After an introduction to the phenomenon of evaluation in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 surveys recent work concerning the process of scientific discovery and the writing of research articles. Chapter 3 returns to evaluation and its place in various theories of discourse, mainly those of Sinclair and of Halliday. The model of evaluation proposed in this thesis is set out in the next three chapters, dealing in turn with the Status, Value and Relevance functions of evaluation. Status is the function of evaluation which bestows entity, assessing along a certain-uncertain parameter. Value bestows quality and assesses along a good-bad parameter. Evaluation of Relevance is meta-discoursal and marks significance. Relevance Markers are identified, which progressively chunk and organise the text. Comparisons between texts analysed for Status, Value and Relevance demonstrate a movement towards the theoretical and an increase in complexity of argument as the sub-discipline under discussion progresses. Chapter 7 investigates the contribution of evaluation towards text structure and notes a number of ways in which discourse units in experimental research articles may be organised. The concluding chapter, Chapter 8, discusses some of the practical and theoretical implications of the work described in the thesis. The Appendix contains the research articles which comprise the corpus.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2009.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 81-84).<br>This thesis describes an automatic approach for producing Wikipedia articles. The wealth of information present on the Internet is currently untapped for many topics of secondary concern. Creating articles requires a great deal of time spent collecting information and editing. This thesis presents a solution. The proposed algorithm creates a new article by querying the Internet, selecting relevant excerpts from the search results, and synthesizing the best excerpts into a coherent document. This work builds on previous work in document summarization, web question answering, and Integer Linear Programming. At the core of our approach is a method for using existing human-authored Wikipedia articles to learn a content selection mechanism. Articles in the same category often present similar types of information; we can leverage this to create content templates for new articles. Once a template has been created, we use classification and clustering techniques to select a single best excerpt for each section. Finally, we use Integer Linear Programming techniques to eliminate any redundancy over the complete article. We evaluate our system for both individual sections and complete articles, using both human and automatic evaluation methods. The results indicate that articles created by our system are close to human-authored Wikipedia entries in quality of content selection. We show that both human and automatic evaluation metrics are in agreement; therefore, automatic methods are a reasonable evaluation tool for this task. We also empirically demonstrate that explicit modeling of content structure is essential for improving the quality of an automatically-produced article.<br>by Christina Sauper.<br>S.M.

Abstract:
Journal articles are the formal medium for the communication of results among scientists, and often contain valuable data. However, manually collecting article data from a large field like lithium-ion battery chemistry is tedious and time consuming, which is an obstacle when searching for statistical trends and correlations to inform research decisions. To address this a platform for the automatic retrieval and analysis of large numbers of articles is created and applied to the field of lithium-ion battery chemistry. Example data produced by the platform is presented and evaluated and sources of error limiting this type of platform are identified, with problems related to text extraction and pattern matching being especially significant. Some solutions to these problems are presented and potential future improvements are proposed.

Sen, Anamika Ashit. "Hyperpartisanship in Web Searched Articles." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/93209.

Full text
Abstract:
News consumption is primarily done through online news media outlets and social media. There has been a recent rise in both fake news generation, and consumption. Fake news refers to articles that deliberately contain false information to influence readers. Substantial dissemination of misinformation has been recognized to influence election results. This work focuses on hyperpartisanship in web-searched articles which refers to web searched articles which have polarized views and which represent a sensationalized view of the content. There are many such news websites which cater to propagating biased news for political and/or financial gain. This work uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques on news articles to find out if a web-searched article can be termed as hyperpartisan or not. The methods were developed using a labeled dataset which was released as a part of the SemEval Task 4 - Hyperpartisan News Detection. The model was applied to queries related to U. S. midterm elections in 2018. We found that more than half the articles in web search queries showed hyperpartisanship attributes.<br>Master of Science<br>Over the recent years, the World Wide Web (WWW) has become a very important part of society. It has overgrown as a powerful medium not only to communicate with known contacts but also to gather, understand and propagate ideas with the whole world. However, in recent times there has been an increasing generation and consumption of misinformation and disinformation. These type of news, particularly fake and hyperpartisan news are particularly curated so as to hide the actual facts, and to present a biased, made-up view of the issue at hand. This activity can be harmful to the society as greater the spread and/or consumption of such news would be, more would be the negative decisions made by the readers. Thus, it poses a bigger threat to society as it affects the actions of people affected by the news. In this work, we look into a similar genre of misinformation that is hyperpartisan news. Hyperpartisan news follows a hyperpartisan orientation - the news exhibits biased opinions towards a entity (party, people, etc.) In this work, we explore to find how Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods could be used to automate the finding of hyperpartisanship in web searched articles, focusing on extraction of the linguistic features. We extend our work to test our findings in the web-searched articles related to midterm elections 2018.
