Abstract:
IntroductionLiasion psychiatry is a clinical area of psychiatry that includes psychiatric assistant activities in other medical and surgical areas of a general hospital. In Portugal, it has developed as a result of psychiatry integration in general hospitals. Historically, it started at the beginning of 1930s in USA. In Portugal, the law 413 of 1971 definned the articulation of mental health services with other health services–liasion psychiatry.ObjectiveWe aim to define patients evaluated in the context of liasion psychiatry, as well as other medical and surgical areas needs of psychiatry collaboration.MethodsRetrospective analyses of collaboration requests realized to psychiatry department of centro hospitalar Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro–Vila Real, between October 2014 and October 2015.DiscussionMost of collaboration requests came from Internal Medicine Service. Authors systematize the reasons for the requests, the time of response to those, the existence of psychiatric history, the type of intervention, the number of observations in the same patient, the most frequent diagnosis and treatment. This psychiatric service consists of four specialists and activity evaluated in this article is one of the clinical areas where these professionals intervene. Depending on the results, it is interesting then to assess needs and optimize available resources.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract:
The education and training needed for health professionals performing person centered medicine in a prison hospital is presented. The health professionals involved work in the department for forensic psychiatry of a prison hospital and conduct mandatory psychiatric treatment during a person’s prison sentence using a bio-psycho-social model of treatment and rehabilitation. Such health professionals work with mentally ill people having partially diminished capacity who perpetrated criminal activities and were sentenced according to the Croatian Criminal Code or Criminal Procedures Act and the Law for the Protection of Persons with Mental Illness. Required professional skills include capabilities to provide person-centered psychiatric treatment aimed at reducing psychopathology, articulating theoretical concepts, therapeutic procedures, health professionals' roles and self-understanding, interpersonal issues, relations between patient/prisoner and health professional, ethical dilemmas, and challenges establishing partnerships. Since each patient is also a person serving a prison sentence, the health professional must also know the legislative framework, work as a civil servant, pass the State service examination and be part of a team with different types of other professionals, particularly social workers, occupational therapists, prison officers, court officers, and state officers. For health professionals to practice person centered medicine in a prison setting is a quite demanding and stressful challenge. It may be the hardest way to practice, but it is the right way to do it.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the strategies, challenges and possibilities of the articulation between mental health and primary health care from the perspective of health managers. Method: Exploratory, qualitative research carried out with 28 managers of mental health and primary care. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews between July and November 2013 and submitted to thematic content analysis. Results: The inclusion of mental health actions in primary care made it possible, in the view of managers, to increase users’ access to the care they need. This care strategy allows the extension of care practices in the territory, with matrix support as the main tool for the implementation of this care strategy. Final considerations: The articulation between primary care and mental health is a powerful device for psychosocial care, but it demands a new conformation of the Psychosocial Care Centers (Caps) and primary care services.

Abstract:
This paper examines the developing and complex legal relationship between universities and students, or would-be students, who have mental health problems. Discussion takes account of the wider social and policy contexts, including the extent of mental ill-health among the student population, the market for higher education, and government policies towards universities. It contends that the legal position of students with mental health problems demonstrates that there is a need for the relationship between students and universities to be conceptualised with reference to the citizenship ideal rather than the consumer paradigm with which it has tended to become associated in public policy terms.

This study examines the emotional and mental health effects revenge porn has on female survivors. To date, no other academic studies have exclusively focused on mental health effects in revenge porn cases. In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted between February 2014 and January 2015 with 18 female revenge porn survivors, and inductive analysis revealed participants’ experiences of trust issues, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and several other mental health effects. These findings reveal the seriousness of revenge porn, the devastating impacts it has on survivors’ mental health, and similarities between revenge porn and sexual assault.

Abstract:
Females are becoming a prominent population within America’s correctional facilities, which has led to incarcerated females increasingly becoming the popular subjects of more recent research. Along with the growing population of female inmates, the rates of sexual and physical victimization reported by incarcerated females is rapidly growing. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the pre-established correlation between mental health diagnoses, and the prior physical and/or sexual abuse of female inmates within the custody of correctional institutions, outline the current treatment process, and devise a revision of the treatment process in order to improve the future of mental health care for incarcerated females. First, a brief description of the increasing female inmate population, their significant mental health care needs, and the lack of effective mental health care they are actually receiving, followed by the issues that this poses to rehabilitation and the community will be provided. Second, an examination of the commonality of childhood physical and/or sexual abuse among the female offenders that have been diagnosed with mental illnesses will be conducted. Next, a discussion of the most common mental health diagnoses of incarcerated women, what they are said to be caused by, and how they are being treated behind bars will be directed. Finally, a conclusion covering the established relationship between physical and sexual abuse and adult mental illnesses, the issues that the lack of adequate mental health care for incarcerated females poses, and what can be done to change and improve the future will be presented.

Abstract:
As the Judicial Enforcement of Competition Law in health services is increasing, it seems relevant to wonder whether this phenomenon could somehow be questioned. Indeed, Competition Law and Health Law have not yet been investigated together through an overall study – though the intertwining of these disciplines is not only possible, but also visibly encouraged. In fact, far from thwarting the influence of Competition, Health Law even participates in its enforcement, triggering mechanisms likely to provoke it. Besides, the application of Competition Rules is advisable whenever it strengthens Health Rules. Sanitary norms have nonetheless used Competition without it being satisfactorily protected. Consequently, the application of Competition Rules appears necessary. The relation between disciplines has also known negative effects : even though Competition Law offers indirect protection to “health consumers”, its mechanisms do not, in actuality, take sanitary objectives into account. Conflicts between the disciplines compel them to alter one another, leading to their mutual neutralization. Consequently, the interaction between Competition and Health norms needs to be improved. Limited or residual rights of appeal could be the key under Competition Law

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use among teenagers. This study examined three research questions: (1) Is there a relationship between demographic characteristics (i.e., sex and race), the attitudinal variable (attachment to family), and the admitted use of marijuana, alcohol, and tobacco among teenagers? (2) Is there a relationship between the use of marijuana by teenagers and the use of tobacco by teenagers? (3) Is there a relationship between the use of marijuana by teenagers and the use of alcohol by teenagers? The data used for this paper were from the Evaluation of the Gang Resistance Education and Training Program research project (Esbensen, 2003). The analysis found that the frequency of teenage alcohol use had the strongest correlation with the use of marijuana. The frequency of teenage tobacco use was also found to have a significant correlation to marijuana use.

Abstract:
This paper has attempted to determine if there is a significant relationship between self-determination and client outcomes among the homeless. The study has been based upon the conceptual framework set forth in Self-Determination Theory. The purpose of the study was to explore the relationship between self-determination and client outcomes among the homeless. Using a data collection instrument, based on empirically validated instrumentation, clients from several homeless service providers in the City of San Bernardino were assessed for the level of self-determination and autonomy support they experience within these agencies. Outcome measures included such things as whether the client was going to school, had a job and had a bank account. Overall, the results of the study were inconclusive, though some interesting post hoc observations were made. It was the primary aim of this paper to increase the knowledge base of the local network of homeless service providers and to promote the compassionate, equitable, and dignified treatment of the population they serve.

This dissertation is part of the European Project FACT - Fostering Alternative Care for Troubled Minors - and its main objective is to reflect, from the perspective of the interests involved, how the articulation between health and justice professionals is realized, relating to the intervention with young people with psychopathology to comply with Educational Tutelary Measures. Based on the qualitative methodology, in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted and a focus group with a total of 11 professionals from different areas, namely mental health and juvenile justice who have contact with the problem under study. The choice of these professionals was with the ability to provide rich content for understanding this theme. Regarding the results obtained, it should be noted that the articulation between health and justice professionals seems to be perceived as effective in cases where there is a more informal and close interpersonal communication, but interinstitutional articulation (court, social reintegration teams, formative structures), it is not as efficient and there is a need to improve it with the ultimate goal of promoting an appropriate approach and optimization of the intervention process, especially among young people with mental health problems.

Abstract:
The debate about whether mental health law should be abolished or reformed emerged during the negotiations of the Convention on the Right of Persons with Disabilities (‘CRPD’) and has raged fiercely for over a decade. It has resulted in an impasse between abolitionists, States Parties, and other reformers and a literature which has devolved into ‘camps’. Mental Health Law: Abolish or Reform? aims to cut through the confusion using the tools of human rights treaty interpretation backed by a deep jurisprudential analysis of core CRPD concepts—dignity (including autonomy), equality, and participation—to gain a clearer understanding of the meaning of the CRPD and what it requires States Parties to do. In doing so, it sets out the development of both mental health law and the abolitionist movement including its goals and how and why it has emerged now. By digging deeper into the conceptual basis of the CRPD and developing the ‘interpretive compass’, the book aims to flesh out a broader vision of disability rights and move the debate forward by evaluating the three main current abolition and reform options: Abolition with Support, Mental Capacity with Support, and Support Except Where There is Harm. Drawing on jurisprudential and multi-disciplinary research from philosophy, medicine, sociology, disability studies, and history, it argues that mental health law should not be abolished, but should instead be significantly reformed to minimize coercion and maximize the support and choices given to persons with mental impairments to realize of all of their CRPD rights.

Written by esteemed legal scholar Michael L. Perlin, this indispensable Advanced Introduction examines the long-standing but ever-dynamic relationship between law and mental health. The author discusses and contextualises how the law, primarily in the United States but also in other countries, treats mental health, intellectual disabilities, and mental incapacity, giving examples of how issues such as the rights of patients, the death penalty and the insanity defense permeate constitutional, civil, and criminal matters, and indeed the general practice of law.

Abstract:
This chapter will examine two key areas of law relating to medical treatment and care of those with mental disorder. The question of decision-making capacity is important for health care professionals, and other carers and agents dealing with older people. The law relating to this is covered by the Mental Capacity Act 2005 supplemented by previous case law where this is still relevant, and the key aspect of the law is the ability to treat people without capacity in their best interests. However, in the case of some patients, it may be necessary to use the Mental Health Act 1983. This legislation is focussed, not on the capacity of the patient, but upon the effect that a mental disorder can have upon the patient risking damage to their own well-being, or to the well-being of others. The relationship between the two areas is not always clear.

Abstract:
Mental health law discriminates against people with mental illness when it comes to detention and involuntary treatment. This is evident when we compare such law with that applying in the rest of medicine, certainly in countries with well-developed legal systems. Mental health law fails to respect patient ‘autonomy’ (or self-determination) in the same way as it does in the rest of medicine. Furthermore, a confusion between a person’s health interests and the protection of others results in laws permitting the preventive detention of people with mental disorders—probably uniquely so—on the basis of ‘risk’ of harm, without any offence having been committed. Though people with mental illness are responsible for a very small percentage of violent offences, they can be preventively detained—on grounds reserved for them—while people without a mental illness—equally risky to others or even more so—cannot.

Abstract:
"Police officers are some of the first professionals that might have direct interaction with individuals with mental illnesses. Statistics show that from 2017 to 2020 about 3986 individuals in the United States were fatally shot by police officers (Statista, 2021). These reports indicate that at least 25% and as many as 50% of all fatal shootings involved individuals with untreated severe mental illness. The purpose of this pilot study was to test the effectiveness of a five-day psycho-educational mental health awareness training in enhancing law enforcement officers’ knowledge about mental illness, and their perceptions towards mentally ill individuals using a pretest-posttest design. The Community Attitudes Towards the Mentally Ill (CAMI) scale was used to measure participants’four mental health attitudinal domains - authoritarianism, benevolence, social restrictiveness, and community mental health ideology. The results indicate that at the completion of the training there was an increase in participants’ confidence about their knowledge of the mentally ill individuals and mental illness conditions. However, the results also indicate a slight decrease in participants' mental illness social restrictiveness sentiment after the completion of the training. Additionally, the results also show a correlation between demographic variables and some of the domains. Implications for practice are discussed."
