Full textThe universities works about regional domestic furniture are rares. It exists a few general books about the production of the furniture of " daily ", but they finish to add some errors they will of be renew of many subsequent editions. We have realized a typology of the different furnitures of the regional houses. The Archives Départementales du Gard own around 1600 inventories after death (Nîmes, Beaucaire and Aigues-Mortes). We find like this some engraving collections realized by Martin de Vos, Callot, Firens, Bosse, Van Opstal, Cort, Testa, Daret, Perrier or the Sadeler, Collaert, Galle and Audran families. We demonstrate it didn't exist any difference in the decorative choices between the prostant and catholic houses. Later, we carry out the different standarts of living of this artisans and the different deals to understand their activity. This work comprises too a dictionary of the woodartisans listed

Full textThis doctoral work documents the use of the "hard materials from animal origin » (matières dures d’origine animale), in the Provence region from the Middle Ages until the advent of industrialization. These materials are used for manufacturing many functional or decorative objects either luxurious and expensive or ordinary and cheap. They sometimes also constitute ingredients incorporated in pharmaceutical formula or culinary recipes, are used in steel making or for glue production. Our analysis is based on the joint study of archaeological sources (more than 4000 pieces), written and iconographic sources. It provides a vision of these materials use and their qualitative and quantitative integration in medieval and modern Provençal economies. Our approach highlights the mechanical properties of the raw materials, the morphology of anatomical pieces as well as the craft work technical development along the different periods. From discovery contexts and observation of the tools marks on the objects, blanks and waste, when the technical approach was feasible, we characterized the manufacturing processes and places. Detailed analysis of the written sources also provides information on the craftsmen working these materials, on the sale and circulation of objects and raw materials. The interdisciplinary approach helps better understand the produced objects genesis, reproduce their morphological evolution, estimate their market value and therefore identify the social category they are intended for, put forward assumptions about the symbolism conferred upon them, and finally describe the way they are perceived and therefore sometimes regulated

Full textThere are no direct remains of Greek roof structures and, in many cases, the state of conservation of the constituent blocks of the upper parts is incomplete. This observation often leads to the reproduction of the interpretative framework of antique roof frameworks established at the end of the 19th century, opposing Greek prop-and-lintel on the one hand, and Roman truss on the other. The challenge of this thesis is to reconsider this binary opposition between two types of framework. In order to compensate for the lack of archaeological remains, other avenues are being explored. The techniques used in the construction of the roof structures are not all specific to this craft. Also, extending the scope of investigation to related activities in the field of woodworking such as, for example, shipbuilding, makes it possible to define the contours of a technical environment in which the framework is embedded. Several characteristics of this technical environment were identified, including the use of assemblages that allow the recovery of tensile forces, the use of triangulation of structures and a great deal of know-how in the preparation of wooden beams. Following this review of the practical and technical knowledge of Greek carpenters, a series of case studies are proposed, including the Piraeus Arsenal, the Doric temples of Sicily, the Parthenon, as well as the so-called “limestone temple” and the fourth century BC Apollo templein Delphi. The construction accounts of this last building, which is very rich in wood materials, are also systematically analysed. Finally, from a methodological point of view, this thesis addresses the question of the restitution of the upper parts. The use of 3d modelling and structural calculation makes it possible to formulate new hypotheses and evaluate their relevance in a back and forth movement between the remains, techniques and the mechanical behaviour of the structures. The main results of this PhD dissertation concern the characterization of the technical environment in which Greek carpenters of the sixth and fifth centuries BC evolve and lead to consider as relevant the hypothesis of the existence of triangulated roof structures

The ways of life and worlds in which the forms of knowledge of craftsmen were at one time primordial have become marginal or left behind in Quebec. But they are still, in the St. Laurence Valley, exceptionally incorporated into different perspectives in which they are basic components, which imply relations and attentions that overshadow individual interests. Influenced by the capitalist world system as well as constraining political choices at multiple levels, their experiments have been partially take off their natives worlds locally, as from some of the specific contexts in which they were valued, implemented and assessed. While the craftsman’s knowledge bases are now mostly applied to leisure and sport activities today, they are still valued given to the “old” methods and perspectives embedded in their worlds of reference. In some cases, they are explicitly incorporated within a critical perspective as mediators of experimentation of specific “ways of life”, expressing in practice, social and political particular affections. I met with seven craftsmen in the St. Laurence Valley in this exploratory investigation into their worlds, knowledge and traditions, and carried out “free” conversations and semi-directed interviews with them. From a territorial and historic perspective, this work reveals certain ruptures, progressions and continuities.

Full textThe first part focuses on material analysis and process use for the manufacturing of funerary “models”. These wooden objects represent people or everyday scenes of life, used by Egyptian elites for funeral furniture between the end of the Old Kingdom to the end of the Middle Kingdom (cir. 2350-1630 BC). In a first part, focused on objects from Saqqara, Assiut and Meir, the stylistic and technical features were examined to define groups of objects and workshops. Then, dating criteria were defined and compared with the funeral furniture discovered in the studied graves. According to one unwound chronological since the end of the Old Kingdom, the second part concentrates on workshops and interregional contacts. A particular attention is worn in the relationship between royal power, elites and craftsmen through the sending of funeral equipment and more particularly bare wooden models of the Memphite area to the Upper Egypt. The third part is interested in the social, economic and religious functions of the models and examines more particularly the narrow relationship which unites this furniture and the funeral practices between the end of the Old Kingdom to the end of the Middle Kingdom. The second volume presents the corpus of the examined wooden models. The third volume is dedicated to appendices. The examination of wooden models, significant of political and religious deep changes at the origin of new customs and funeral faiths between the VIth and the XIIIth dynasty, specifies the geographical, historic and social context associated with the manufacturing. The analysis of these objects allows refining the perception of the relationship between craftsmen and power, omnipresent in the Egyptian society from the Predynastic period
