Full textThis thesis is questioning the pattern of crafts and also the craftsmen identity. It is also wonders about its survival in the new capitalism. The answer is based on two assumptions. First, the craft has achieved a metamorphosis. Craftsmen and craft companies are remaining true to their identity, despite their transformations and the transformations of the economic environment. Second, this thesis studies how this link between artisan and proximity somehow responds to new trends in the changes production systems, and represents “the new spirit of capitalism” (Boltanski et Chappielo, 2011). Craft companies’ specific practices in management, human resources management, marketing and communication, as well as their production model is consistent with the new forms of organization, the evolution of production models and management adopted by firms, in a word with the “ new spirit of capitalism"

Full textThis thesis analyses the modifications that occurred in the craftwork organization and in the access to the craftsman status since the 1980s’, moment when Sociology stopped taking this group as a research subject. Standing at the crossroads of several institutionalized sociologies (professional groups, labour and social mobility), it combines different methods of investigation : the collection and exploitation of statistics, the observation and analysis of institutions’ documents and interviews with outgoing (50 years old and more) and incoming (set up for 3 to 5 years) craftsmen in five Loire-Atlantique’s communes. This research reveals that the craft pattern, almost unique in the 1980s’, leaves place to a diversity of cases which destabilizes what used to found the craftwork’s regulation and the traditional reproduction of the craftsmen group. It shows indeed the variety in the professional practices, the knowledge mobilized and in the ways this knowledge is acquired. The access to the craftsman status has also been diversified : people who dropped out of University or ex-executives retrain in the craft area. Contrary to what prevailed about thirty years ago, craftsmen who set up from now on did not in the majority go through a worker status and their parents are more often from the middle or upper social classes. We are finally witnessing a growing distance between the working classes and the small self-employed workers

Full textThe object of this research was to analyze and explain the professionnal positions of the artisans in the parisian roofing industry. The study shows that these positions vary according to the structure of the local networks that regulate the activities of this sector. These networks are composed of personnal links through which clients and constructors obtain contracts, professionnal services and other resources. The research indicates that an important part of the construction activities in the suburbs of paris travel through home owner networks; the artisans of these localities dispose of good entries in these webs of relations and are able to work directly for this home owner clientele. In the more urbanized centre of the region, more buildings are administrated by professional property managers. These individuals occupy more space in the local networks and are technically and socially qualified to order and manage roofing repairs. They prefer repeating ties with contractors who delegate the manual work. This explains why the self-employed roofers can only obtain work through sub-contracting in the more urbanized centre of the parisian area

Full textMany works focus on crafts in the second Iron Age, but hardly ever deal with it from an overall point of view. The geographical boundaries chosen for our survey are large since they cover a great part of temperate Europe. The selected area, Celtic Europe from Gaul to Central Europe, leads to a global overview of productions. From this very choice of an overall view of the latenien area results a multiplication of facts : diversified sites on several levels and from distinct regional groups, however forming a single material culture. We need to overtake regional limits in order to apprehend Celtic crafts in its entirety. The evolution of housing environments, from middle La Tène through to Late La Tène, occurs in parallel with the development of production and economical systems. This period, decisive in many ways for technical innovations, shows the full expansion of specialised crafts. Our analysis brings an overview of the organisation of crafts activities in order to understand their function and their settlement within several types of housing in La Tène. For this purpose, the sample of chosen sites corresponds to those which show significant marks. They are chosen according to a methodological approach which allows the collective treatment of all types of crafts, though being slightly different. This aims at characterising crafts activities, determining their function and their distribution within the sites, in order to offer a new ranking approach of the housing environment according to crafts

The handicraft sector in Morocco represents more than 9% of the nation's GDP and employs 2.3 million people. However, despite their talent and expertise, Morocco's artisans are struggling to reach markets other than local regional or national markets. The main distribution model used so far has been the classic retail distribution model, which does not add value to the artisans' work, with most downstream actors playing the role of the middlemen. Other Ecommerce models such as the marketplace model or the crowdfunding model did not solve all the issues faced by artisans and customers. This paper provides the framework for a new distribution channel for Moroccan artisans to improve the efficiency of the value chain linking them to the American consumer by eliminating all unnecessary steps, overhead, and overall inefficiencies of the current distribution models. We first identify the models that are currently used to bring the artisans' crafts to the end consumer in developed markets: the market place (used by the platform Etsy), the crowdfunding model and the classic retail distribution model involving middlemen. We assessed the benefits of all the models by developing a new framework allowing to score each one of them. We then switched our focus to a hybrid model: a crowdfunding platform where the company partners with the artisans to align the different stakeholders' interests. To the extent of our knowledge, this model has not been used yet. It was found that our methodology could help artisans access international markets more efficiently. We finished by determining the optimal strategy using social media to market this platform and engage more efficiently potential customers. Keywords: handicraft, supply chain, crowdfunding, retail, social network marketing.

Full textLong considered to be exclusively focused on their craft and production, artisans demonstrate today their openness to their business environment and their ability to develop their activity and brand from the point of view of consumers. The aim of this research is to determine whether the development of the artisan’s business, through branding and marketing actions, causes them to lose what makes their essence and values in the eyes of the consumers. A literature review and a series of qualitative studies (focus group, semi-structured interviews, ZMET technique) allow us to better understand the consumer’s perceptions of the artisan and highlight the interest of the concept of artisan brand. In addition, a series of experiments were conducted to measure the impact of the personification and marketing orientation of the artisan’s store name on consumer reactions. The results show the mediating role of perceived warmth and competence of the artisan and the consumer’s identification with the store and the artisan. Finally, testing several scenarios of artisan business development, a last experimentation highlights the positive reactions toward the creation of an artisan brand, and the choice of marketing orientation but also some mistrust about the increase of the size of the business

Full textDespite noted attempts to develop an arts and crafts market in France, such a market is still struggling to achieve its unification and its autonomy from art, craft, industry and amateur work. Based on archives, interviews, observations and statistics, this thesis describes the different actual arts and crafts markets and shows how each is established around a specific concept of arts and crafts. Starting with the late nineteenth century period, the first part explains why today’s representations and practices of arts and crafts are structured by the instituted divide between art on the one hand and craft on the other hand. The second part focuses on the artist-craftsmen’s socialisation to a work ethic whose characteristics differ according to whether they refer to art or to craft. The third part underlines how such an ethic, a constraint and a resource alternately, shapes the entrepreneurial behaviours of artist-craftsmen

Full textThis thesis aims at addressing questions on artisanal gold mining in Burkina Faso. It is mainly composed of three chapters. Before discussing these three chapters, in the introduction, we first describe the socio-economic context and legal context of the country’s mining sector; then we review the literature on the issue of gold panning including positive impacts such as job opportunities and negative impacts such as health and safety issues; other issues including the relationship between agriculture and artisanal mining, the sustainability of gold washing and the social responsibility of mining companies, local governance of sites; and finally, the different conceptual frameworks mobilized for the three themes, namely the institutional development analysis framework, the sustainable livelihoods framework and women’s empowerment. In the first chapter, Local governance and labor organizations on artisanal gold mining sites in Burkina Faso, we use the institutional development analysis framework to discuss local governance and the division of labor in the artisanal gold mining camps in Bukina Faso; a country in West Africa which, in recent years, is increasingly exploiting its gold reserves. Field data were collected from three sites in the villages of Diosso, Siguinoguin and Zincko, according to reasoned sampling. One of the major discoveries from on-site research is that forms of governance vary along a continuum ranging from flexible (applied by joint powers: artisanal miners’ union, customary authorities and landowners) to rigid (applied by landowners). Another conclusion is that the type of relationship between indigenous communities and minors depends on the importance of the autochtony of artisanal miners. Indeed they are harmonious in Zincko where the miners are from the village while they are stretched to Siguinoguin which is populated by migrants. Finally, this article is based on the French school of proximity to enrich the definitions given to the attributes of the physical world and to the attributes of the community highlighted by the Ostrom theory, the geographical proximity not allowing to detail the forms relational proximity organized in the mining camps. In the second chapter, How do artisanal gold mining and smallholder farming coexist in Burkina Faso?, we propose an understanding of the dynamic relationship between subsistence agriculture and artisanal mining, drawing on evidence from artisanal mining communities in v the villages of Diosso, Siguinoguin and Zincko located in Burkina Faso. Research shows that communities face many vulnerabilities such as lack of rain and natural disasters and increasing safety concerns-related to terrorist attacks-in the Northern part of the country. On the one hand, agriculture supports artisanal gold mining by providing farmers with the income they need to engage in the activity, such as paying for the transport from their respective villages to mining camps; on the other hand, artisanal gold mining significantly supports agriculture by supporting families during lean periods of the dry season and by contributing to the purchase of agricultural inputs. While this interaction appears to be beneficial, the youth interviews revealed a real problem for farm succession that has become accustomed to the new modern life that could be offered through gold panning. Then, farm succession develops coping strategies that move it away from farming activities and lead it towards unsustainable long-term livelihoods. In the last chapter, Obtaining empowerment in a man’s world, we examine the economic and social empowerment of women through artisanal mining in Burkina Faso. We conducted individual interviews and focus groups on three mining camps across the country. These interviews provided information on the different roles played by women in mining camps, their access to the necessary resources and the collective power that they develop while working together in the mining camps. In general, women report that they engage in artisanal mining for precarious financial reasons and agricultural poverty. Our results indicate that access to resources depends on women’s positions, initial investments and marital status. It tends to be provided by husbands for married women who need less than 50 USD in initial investments (these women usually perform winnowing tasks). We found that only pit owners and stall owners (stands where stones are crushed, washed and processed) easily achieve greater economic and social independence by improving their economic level, self-esteem and autonomy. As far as "panners" are concerned, even if they improve their self-esteem, their incomes remain low to ensure sustainable economic autonomy.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The retention of the right skills in any organisation or industry is always a challenge. There are many causes of the skills shortage and it is also difficult to retain skilled people once they have been found. The literature suggests that retention of skills should ideally be considered from the design and expectation of the requirements of the job through to the recruitment process; and not only once the employee has started working. The literature also explores the different retention strategies that can be applied, such as succession planning, employee engagement, work – life balance, remuneration structuring and career advancement path. This research is limited to Tshikondeni coal mine and attempts to establish which of the following are the biggest contributing factors that cause people to leave and resign from the mine: • Known life of the mine left is till 2014; • Remote location away from essential services; • Leadership; and • Remuneration. From the research that was done, it became clear that the limited life of the mine was the biggest contributing factor that would make employees want to leave Tshikondeni coal mine. Further study is recommended for organisations that operate with finite resources, and mostly in remote areas, to develop further specific retention strategies – over and above those challenges that face all other industries and organisations. This should be done so that the reality of finite resources can be addressed in order to keep employees motivated and energised until the last ton is extracted.

Full textThe cattail (Typha spp.) is the protagonist of the life histories of women extractivist-artisans, because it guarantees their sustainability in daily life. In this perspective, the main objective of the thesis was to point out how cattail promotes the socioenvironmental sustainability of women who attribute meanings to their actions as a way of surviving, in the face of the adversities of their daily lives. It had as specific objectives: to contextualize the actions and processes of women in the extraction of the Cattail, in order to influence the construction of socioenvironmental sustainability; identify spaces (social, educational, cultural and political) in which women express their experiences in daily life; to describe the meanings attributed by the woman to the extraction of the cattail in relation to the sociability and the commercialization of the products re-signified to the raw material of Typha spp. To achieve the objectives, oral history was used interwoven with social phenomenology, which allowed us to recall events and facts that led the women extractivist-artisans of cattail - as well as extractive-artisans from Ouricuri straw, fishermen, lace makers, seamstresses, straw braids artisans, housekeepers, ministers, sisters, mothers and wives - to incorporate in their routine ways of resisting and sustaining the family in the place of daily life. In this case, the research locus was the municipality of Pacatuba, State of Sergipe, Brazil. We also used interviews-dialogues, semistructured questionnaires, participation in meetings and events, field journals, theoretical readings and photographs as methodological tools, which allowed us to systematize the thesis. We conclude that, for extractive-artisan women, sustainability is delineated in daily life through actions that aim to keep Typha spp. in constant production and growth. It is not something that is discussed, it is something that is done, and it was transmitted to them by previous generations and by processes of observation of the daily life, especially since the knowledge of the correct management is passed from artisan to artisan, during the harvest, as well as in meetings in associations, craft centers, group meetings and also in prayer spaces. Finally, the meaning that these extractivist-artisans attribute to the cattail is summed up in one word: everything. "[...] The Cattail to us is everything".________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“[...]A taboa pra nós é tudo”.

Social responsibility in relations between designers and artisans: a sustainable way? has as its chief objective to investigate whether projects selfstyled as social responsibility between designers and artisans may make it possible to generate income and preserve the social and cultural traditions of the artisans involved. The analysis focuses examples of alliances between companies or representatives of companies helping groups of artisans or communities to adjust to the market and doing so explicitly with a social aim and not just outsourcing. We are interested in cases where the company uses market-specific expertise for social ends and thus enables and/or promotes these groups or communities. From this research it was possible to verify issues related to the relationships between designers/stylists and artisans that directly influence the development of handicrafts and their consistent permanence in specific markets, such as the fashion market.

Full textSmall business in France (i. E. Craft industry and handicraft) is characterized with a specific identity through its history, legislation and the positions of the small business representative institutions. However, the great diversity of small businesses is shown through statistics, different population categories and lines of products. A typological analysis based on the entrepreneurial behaviour enables a better definition of the craft sector, i. E. Its specific and heterogeneous characters, in order to observe for each group its adaptation capacity. A thorough knowledge of the sector is required to achieve efficient actions in this field. For that purpose, it is necessary to take into account at the same time the functions of the craft products, the sociocultural systems of customers and craftmen and at least the range of activities covered by the craft sector in the lines of products
