Gavin, Emma. "Wonder/Wander: An Exploration of Storytelling, Illustrated Children's Literature, and Narrative Simulation Through Hypertext and the Artist Book Form." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2014. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/340.

Abstract:
For my Senior project as a Fine Arts Major at Scripps College, I spent the fall semester exploring the history and possibility of the digital and analog artist book form. After going through a number of foundational changes, my project concept was eventually grounded in the form of a web-based hypertext artist book. Based on my pre-existing interest in storytelling and my previous study of mental immersion in possible worlds, I started the process by compiling an artistic representation of what it means to be a young girl discovering the possibilities for creation and empowerment available to her through storytelling. Wonder/Wander is the culmination of my experimentation with digital art, hypertext, and visual storytelling. It is my contribution to the artist book form as I have considered it and its evolution into the digital age.

Thesis, Lyon, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017LYSE2021.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis observe the phenomenon of the artist book for children. The primary objective of the study is to link our object to a deeper questioning concerning the place of art and how a form of specific artistic practice can take part in the concept of childhood and educational issues. The research attempt to clarify an aesthetic of childhood in the years 68, a significant development in a context of socio-cultural change in progress. Indeed, it is in this same period we can observe avant-garde artistic movements and practices which take part in the development of another perspective on childhood with art for and with children. Our reflection is in the field of the sciences of education but also in the history of art because the artist's book is part of these hybrid objects located halfway between the book and the work Of art. We question our object: if in a general way, the children's book carries a certain representation that a society makes of childhood, if it is like a mirror of what it wants to offer as Models of childhood, the specific book that interests us, the artist's book for children, can not it also tell us something specific about the childhood of today? In order to understand our object in all its dimensions, it seems pertinent to question the evolution of the image of childhood in the book but also to question artists who create art books intended for youth such as Leszek Brogowsky (2010) advocates it in the context of the study of specific artistic practices . We then proceed to a careful examination of artists' books considered as devices, alternative spaces (Dupeyrat, 2012), places of expression of a certain regard focused on childhood. It is by interrogating the artists, while trying to retrace their trajectory (Passeron, 1990) that our object will also become more readable and visible. Why have full-fledged artists made this choice for creation for childhood? How can the artist book for children be representative of a new look at childhood? Our work wish brings to light new looks to observe art and childhood otherwise

Little, Laura. "A practice-based exploration of the relationship between artists' books and children's picturebooks." Thesis, Anglia Ruskin University, 2015. http://arro.anglia.ac.uk/701519/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a practice‐based exploration of the relationship between narrative and the use of the book form in artists’ books and children’s picturebooks, placing emphasis on the experiential qualities of the physical book. Most of the academic literature on the relationship between artists’ books and children’s picturebooks focuses on the finished book. Taking a practice‐based perspective, I approached this project as a book artist and explored my attempts to make a children’s picturebook. My analysis of the creation of a series of books contextualised with a discussion of literature on artists’ books and children’s picturebooks led to an investigation of the structures of children's picturebooks and the ways in which it overlaps with artists’ books. As a book artist, I had not anticipated my use of the book form to present significant creative challenges. However, the picturebook form imposed a more direct story than I would usually work with when creating artist’s books; new ways of using the book form emerged. My depictions of narrative became more figurative and my use of the book form took on greater subtlety. A key outcome of this research was a discussion from the book artist’s perspective of the process of creating a children's picturebook. An analysis of my practical work demonstrated the possibility of taking an interdisciplinary approach as a way for practitioners to discuss work in progress and finished work, offering insights into the process of both creating and interpreting practical work while investigating the relationship between artists’ books and children’s picturebooks.

A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
While working as an intern for the social enterprise Book a Street Artist, I was responsible for implementing an internationalization plan. Due to the lack of information about how social enterprises internationalize, a three-plus-two step structure has been developed and applied to the enterprise. This work demonstrates that to precisely scale up social impact, the actual implementation of social enterprises´ internationalization should be done in a rapid, not necessarily systematic manner. Therefore, the best way to internationalize is based on an implementation strategy which is suited to the enterprises´ actual market conditions and its business model.

Abstract:
The central idea of the research was to reconcile the visual narratives of Getúlio Damado and Roger Mello and henceforth to highlight the cognitive processes and strategies involved in structuring their social identities and contemporary artistic languages, as well as to emphasize the playfulness, and access to the universe of childhood and popular culture to reframe both their works. Additionally, this paper tried to comment and evaluate specific moments of prestige and repudiation versus consecration occurred with these artists. To this end, these productions were contextualized as cultural productions in a constant process of mutation, which involved both historical events and technological innovation in continuous construction. These languages are subjected to a high speed and overlapping influences. Another point emphasized in the analysis was the character of subjectivity of these productions, aesthetic practices identified as promoters of political transformation, mobilization, or also by its ability to operate with the symbolic use of toys and childrens books recovering their original use.. Daydreams, the childish playfulness and the popular culture present in those objects made of waste and illustrated books were confronted with consonant practices or embracing speeches, currents in the world of art or sometimes familiar to local approaches. Besides the possibility of convergence between the productions of the two artists, the research also spotted many differences, and pointed out particularly the potentiality that can come from popular culture as an exploratory field of research, as well as its redefinition

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis entails an explorative and argumentative study that is concerned with the importance and relevance of artist books, as substantiated by art-historical research into the way in which people present, organize and interpret knowledge about their world as observed in the history of the ever-evolving book; as well as related critical and theoretical discussions surrounding language and art. The structure of the thesis is based on the triadic treatment of book types as presented in philosophers Deleuze and Guattari’s theory of the Rhizome in A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia (1987). Each book essentially stands for a particular system or paradigm of thought that is described in terms of a biological structure. These are the Root book, the Fascicular book and the Rhizome. The root and fascicular structures are shown to be ubiquitous within dominant Western habits of thought, emphasised by the tendency to organize elements around a singular, central motif and, as a result, to create binaries. Although useful for certain practices in life, these patterns of thought have potentially problematic socio-political implications, and they are especially limiting with regards to creative work. An argument is developed in defence of the third book type, the rhizome, as a means of thinking in a non-linear, acentred and more complex and connected way about art, oneself and one’s world. At its core, this thesis works towards establishing a theoretical framework for the practice of artist books, showing how, in numerous ways, artist books encompass this rhizomatic way of thinking.
A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia (1987).

Abstract:
Investigations in Botanical Contact Printing (Where the Light Meets the Trees; Thirteen Variations) explores the process of botanical contact printing on paper, culminating in a series of thirteen handmade artist books. Each of the thirteen books contains a poem from a collection of thirteen poems written by Alice Yousef. Every element of the book: materials, structure, calligraphed text, type of botanical contact print, sometimes the enclosure, responds to the poem, providing a visual interpretation of the written word. The completely different approaches to binding structure in this series intend to not only visually support the text, but also explore the possibilities of botanical contact print imagery in the book form.

Abstract:
Today, urban children are spending time indoors more than ever before and getting away from phenomenas of the outdoor world, which creates a big concern on how they develop their senses and get physical exercise. The tools, games and devices they interact with are preventing their imagination rather than sparking, by making kids consume content rather than asking for their participation. Peek transforms the outside into an imaginary playground for children, where interacting with the natural world takes the focus and the child’s simple acts and explorations can turn into their own stories. It is an expressive digital tool that invites children to explore the outside, capture audio and visual snippets, and build stories around them. It comes together with a physical book which triggers child’s imagination through guided explorations and allows the child to keep the stories they created. The result is a play experience designed for children aged between 5 and 8 years old.

Abstract:
This thesis discusses the hybridism in the contemporary children s Object Books, in an attempt to elucidate how the hybrid nature of the design language and of the intersemiotic experience, reveal the interactions in the multisensory stories, expanding the narratives found in children s Object Books. A look at the act of reading is not restricted to the deciphering of written letters – in whatever sort of support, but in the absorption of established representativeness. Book design influences that reading, not only in functional aspects, but also in symbolic ones, and that is why it can be considered as a reading-mediator, driving the reader through his journey. The thesis presents the reading of two children s object-books chosen from the works from Kveta Pacovská and Roger Mello, both internationally recognized designers/illustrators and plastic artists awarded with the Hans Christian Andersen prize. In these books, the progress from which the histories were activated and amplified in the hybridism of the narrative process was accounted. The theses is based on the notion of hybrid as an analytical category as proposed by Braida (2012).

"1994".
Thesis (PhD)--Macquarie University, School of English and Linguistics, 1995.
Bibliography: leaves 356-373 (pt. 1)
Introduction -- Research in joint book-reading and the discourse of literacy pedagogy -- The study : Part A: Research questions, preliminary analysis and participant selection -- Part B : Data gathering and preparation -- Language, context and semantic variation -- A semantic network for the description of linguistic interaction in joint book-reading -- Reading The three little pigs at home -- Results of the message semantic analysis of the interactive text -- Interpretations -- Joint book-reading in the discourse of literacy pedagogy -- Concluding comments -- Appendices.
The study contributes to the fields of educational linguistics and semantic variation by examining linguistic interaction during joint book-reading between mothers and four-year-old children, and between teachers and Kindergarten classes at the beginning of school. -- Joint book-reading was selected because of its centrality to the metaphor of a partnership between home and school in children's literacy development. The problem for the study was to investigate possible systematic semantic variation in linguistic interaction associated with social class locations of speakers, and relations between any such variants and features of interaction in joint book-reading in Kindergarten. -- A preliminary survey of 427 families in two sociogeographically contrasted sites established that joint book-reading was a common social practice, and gave sufficient indications of variation to justify an intensive socio-semantic study. Two sets of ten mother-child dyads, contrasted for class locations using Bernstein's (1990) theory of class relations, were constructed and recordings of joint book-reading sessions made by mothers. Recordings of interaction in two sets of ten Kindergarten classes in the same socio-geographical areas were made by teachers. -- Vygotsky's theory of semiotic mediation was the general resource used for interpreting children's learning, but it was necessary to resolve problems in the theory in the modelling of contexts for learning, and of mediational means. For this purpose the systemic functional linguistic concept of context of situation, as proposed by Halliday (1978) and expanded by Hasan (in press (a)), was deployed. -- Transcripts of recordings were analysed through a semantic network developed for the study, based on a network proposed by Hasan (1983). -- Semantic variation associated with class locations of families was found across all four metafunctions described within systemic theory, and one variant found to be associated with Kindergarten classroom interaction. The variable semantic features were interpreted as the realization of different principles regulating the individuation of experience, using Bernstein's theories of coding orientation and pedagogic discourse.
Mode of access: World Wide Web.
2 parts (373, 539 p.) ill

West, Veronica Mary. "What children make of things and what we make of them : process, intention & intuition in the visual works of young children & the adult artist." Thesis, Staffordshire University, 2013. http://eprints.staffs.ac.uk/2726/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis is in two parts: the first is an empirical and philosophical investigation of children's drawing practices, with particular reference to an interpretation of the work of Georges-Henri Luquet 1876 – 1965. Luquet's work is interrogated first by additional empirical evidence, and second by drawing philosophical resources from both Bergson, and from the phenomenological tradition. The second part of this thesis is a body of work, which explores types of process (some of which are derived from observations of children's processes), through experimentation in my own Fine Art practice; and reflection upon its development and significance is found throughout the written thesis, but especially in Chapter 3. Additional empirical evidence, documentation, and papers on both parts, are found in the Appendix and in an exhibition timed to coincide with the doctoral examination. The first chapter both presents and critically examines the elements Luquet identified of 'intention', 'interpretation', 'the type', 'the internal model' and 'predilection' in relation to attention and intentionality. Luquet's analysis and observations will be used to construct an initial model of process, which is critically re-examined and expanded in Chapter 2 through a historical revision of process in Fine Art and analyses of material made by children spontaneously and without instruction using found materials. Chapter 3 is comprised of a series of reflections on series in my own practice, and experiments derived from the taxonomy of processes constructed from analysis of the material presented in Chapter 2. It raises questions about the nature of certain types of intuition and attention, which are then discussed in Chapter 4 through examining the relation between attention and intentionality, and 'categorical intuition' as defined by Husserl. Luquet's term Circumspection will be compared with Heidegger's use of the term (Umsicht),in Being and Time, and reference will be made to the later development of Heidegger's thought in 'The Origin of the Work of Art', in particular the concepts of Ereignis and Gelassenheit. A fully revised model of process is proposed at the end of Chapter 4. It will be argued that the questions raised can only be answered if at all, through our embodied relation with the world via late Husserl, and Merleau-Ponty's concepts of operative intentionality; the practical cogito; and the pre-cognitive realm. The Conclusion presents the findings of the enquiry, what Phenomenology has brought to it, and directions for future research.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of reading aloud nonfiction science trade books on the attitudes toward science and the book selection habits of students in the elementary classroom. Gender differences among attitude and book selection were also explored. The school district chosen as the site for the research was located in a small Midwestern town with a population of about 32,000. The community consisted of people with diverse socioeconomic status and cultural backgrounds. Four teachers and 73 third grade students participated in the study. Complete data was available for 60 students. The four classrooms were randomly divided into two groups, those listening to science nonfiction trade books for twenty minutes each day for six weeks and those listening to nonscience books for twenty minutes each day for six weeks. An attitudinal survey was administered at the beginning and the end of the study. The percentage of science books versus other types of books was monitored for the six week period. The analysis of data revealed that students who were read the science nonfiction books chose a greater percentage of science books when checking out books from the library than did the students who were read nonscience books. There was no difference in the percentage of books selected by girls compared with those selected by boys. Results also showed a very slight increase in positive attitude toward science as a result of listening to science books during read-aloud sessions. There was no significant difference in the attitudes of the girls compared to the boys who were read science books.
Department of Elementary Education

Miller, Heather 1971 Sept 14. "The book as looking glass : improving works for and about children in early modern England." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/39170.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Comparative Media Studies, February 2004.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 61-64).
This text explores three developments pertaining to children and reading in seventeenth-century England. The author aims to show how profoundly death was implicated in the development of thought about children's reading as well as in the emergence of a literature for children in the early modem period. The first chapter discusses the negative reaction to the growing phenomenon of children reading romances and adventures in chapbook form. Escapist literature was believed to make one forget one's mortal lot, which in turn decreased one's motivation for piety. Through a discussion of the threat chapbook romances posed to pious reading, the chapter establishes the historical context for a related development, the creation of a religious or moralizing literature that children would find compelling. In their quest for gripping settings, authors latched on to the deathbed scene for its felicitous blend of inherent theatricality and religious resonance. By early seventeenth century, a few women writers even used the pretext of deathbed advice to pen their own conduct-of-life manuals in an otherwise male-dominated marketplace. The second chapter discusses the prefatory rhetoric used by the two most successful female writers in this genre. The remarkable success of maternal deathbed advice literature suggests that books in Protestant culture absorbed the near-superstitious value of Catholic icons and relics. The genre also implies a Protestant adaptation of the Catholic veneration of the mother. Comfort for the motherless child no longer came from prayer to Mary, but through the reading (and perhaps holding of) a book of advice by a model (and dead) Protestant mother. An analysis of the prefaces enables a close reading of the self-fashioning
of model mother-authors. The third and final chapter discusses the starring role of death in the first English-language children's book, A Token for Children, by James Janeway. The chapter explores the literary interest in the early deaths of ordinary children of extraordinary piety. By reference to the doctrine of predestination, the author speculates that these books had a comforting as well as a preparatory function, allowing parents and children to rehearse (through reading) a model death of a child undoubtedly bound for Heaven. By no means a comprehensive treatment of the connections between death culture and children's reading in the early modern period, the thesis is intended to indicate how pious reading functioned as a reminder of one's mortality and a spur to self-scrutiny. The "looking glass" of the text displayed idealized and heaven-bound children and parents compared to whom the reader may have felt sorely in need of increased vigilance.
by Heather Miller.
S.M.

Abstract:
Paisagens permeáveis it is a research about drawing from which rises a discussion about the way of looking at closess spaces (space of the house) that unfold over distances of outer space (backyard, nature), considering the material aspect of these situations. I call dialectic of space, this movement of interpenetration that is given from the look, and that runs through, as a concept and problem to be solved in the image environment, all the works presented here. The dialectical relationship between the near and the distant present in the preparation of images, combined with employed materiality and its apparent tactility, and the work of resorting to personal memories, family and finally, the memories of the matter of their own works, gives birth to permeable images that formulates landscape.

Caddell, Heather E. "The corporeal word : an examination of the body and textuality in Salman Rushdie's Midnight's children and Don DeLillo's The body artist." Virtual Press, 2005. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1313069.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the complex interplay between textuality and bodily performance by tracing their development within these two novels. Both texts are fundamentally concerned with the body and its interaction with a dominant culture. Often, the corporeal frame is posited as a physical text in which the social mores, cultural ideologies, and historical framework of a character's society are expressed through the bodies of its citizenry. However, both protagonists struggle to achieve an autonomous subject position outside the realm of the dominant culture, with varying degrees of success. At the end of Midnight's Children, Rushdie subverts the body's position as authoritative text by aligning the voice of record with textual production. Conversely, DeLillo's protagonist refutes the ability of linguistic representation to adequately convey her pathos, and instead utilizes her body art as the most effective means of communicating the atmosphere of alienation and fear which characterizes the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
Department of English

105
The main purpose of this research was to investigate changes on children's perception of different artistic styles before and after picture book instructions. The researcher used five steps of art appreciation teaching: explain, describe, experience, share and compare, to carry out a two-month picture books appreciation instruction for the young children aged 4 to 6 years old. Eight of 6-year-old children were selected to participate pre and post-test, in order to understand children's perception of artistic styles and researchers' teaching effectiveness. The study results showed that picture books appreciation teaching could improve children's perception of artistic styles. However, the perception had individual differences. In addition, the picture books appreciation instruction also affected children in the other learning domains, and also enhanced researcher's teaching skills.

Abstract:
98
The reason why a picture book is so fascinating is because that it is made with colorful, lively and easily understood words, which brings a world of inspiring and unlimited imagination to children. Picture books play an extremely important role during children’s early grow-up time. Beside the exceptional creative ability of the author to tell an appealing story, to attract the attention of children, the most important thing is making great efforts on the arrangement and design of book page layouts, especially “book cover”, for it is the first contact the children make with a picture book. If the children could fall in love with the picture book at first sight, willing to read it again and again, this picture book must be a very successful, impressive publication. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to investigate the basic elements which compose a picture book. By adopting content analysis, and experimental design and analysis, I try to find the best way to design a picture book, that is, how can we arrange the basic elements of a picture book— page layouts, style of fonts and size of books—to make children fall in love with it. After considering all the variables, I discuss how children value a picture book overall—by cover designing, legibility, and/or fascination the book has to offer, and I hope that the authors would find following conclusions useful when composing picture books for children: (1) Warm colors on the book cover are more effective than cool colors and pure black and white, while pure black and white is more acceptable than cool colors. (2) Printed fonts are better than artistic hand-writing, irrespective of the color of drawings on the book covers. (3) Horizontal text direction is more effective than vertical one, irrespective of the color of book covers: warm , cool, or pure black and white. (4) Ordered by reading preference, three most favored drawings are all composed of warm colors; three least favored ones are all of cool colors. (5) The result of this research shows that book covers with the combination of “warm color, horizontal text direction and printed fonts” (as independent variables) are children’s favorite.

This study adopts the narrative structure in wordless picture book by Ho(2004) to analyze the text of this two wordless books. According to the seven story grammar proposed by Stein and Glenn (1979) to analyze the children`s narrative performance. The conclusion as follow: 1. Narrative element that exists in the “setting” As we can find the content of the narrative performance by children, children don’t mind nor care the setting and time should be involved in the story, but the description of the character would definitely be in their narrative. 2.Trigger of the “initiating events” Children won’t be limited by the pictures in the book when they’re trying to construct its meaning. But they sure can connect the partial story from the beginning to the end with reasonable structure accordingly. 3.Performing of the “internal response” In this matter, children always use the method of providing dialogue to achieve the goal of expressing their own words. 4.”Beginning” and the last result of the “Attempts” When children are constructing, they’re easily to put more attention on the gesture of the main characters, thought the description of the gestures and action, pictures and images can productively combine together. But it’s different from picture in the list of movement that caused by the performances of direct consequences. 5.Judgment for the “Reactions” Children all have reaction to these two wordless picture book’s narrative performance. Children tend to have more feeling description to ”Snowman”, and more emotional description to “Don` t forget me, father christmas ”. 6.The links of Narrative event Children usually use “then” and “afterwards” to connect between sentences.

90
The main goal of this research is to investigate the influence of children participating in the creation of child readings for network. We will use one children’s picture book, namely “I have not”, written by the researcher, as the sample book to demonstrate the whole creation process. To do this, we use the Flash5 software to implement the story of animation version based on the sample book, and then publish it on the network as one Internet Child Book. The creation process is divided into three phases. In the first phase, we scan the sample book and put those pictures on the web to get comments back from children readers. In the second phase, we accomplish two versions of animation files based on the story of the sample book. One is created by a participant independently, and the other one is created according to the comments given by children. In the third phase, these three versions of the sample book are put on the network for comments. We will collect and analyze the comments. We found that, children participating in the creation of a network child book can help us promote the result. Our conclusions may give the publishers a different point of view on publishing.

Abstract:
I have elected to write a creative nonfiction thesis because it serves to demonstrate my proficiency in the areas of rhetoric and composition. This thesis consists of a series of personal essays based on my effort to reclaim my voice as a writer. In order to organize these essays, I used the eight trigrams, or universal elements, found in the ancient Chinese I Ching, Book of Changes. They are: Heaven, Thunder, Water, Mountain, Earth, Wind, Fire, and Lake. One by one, I interpreted each element in an effort to create a transformation narrative, my own Book of Changes. Despite the chaos of my real story, the universal elements offered a grounding for each essay. Each essay illustrates my survival as a woman and as a writer. Although these essays grew out of a deeply personal experience, this thesis is about crafting an essay-reclaiming my voice and my body of writing.
Graduation date: 2003

Abstract:
The target of my dissertation is to draw the character of the graphical works created by Jan Jiří Balzer which are kept in the collections of the National gallery in Prague. The resource of the graphical works of J. J. Balzer according to Norbert Grund includes more than five hundred and fifty items which remained almost non-elaborated. That's why, I would try to sort out and catalogue them. Beyond my dissertation, I would like to introduce a personality of the contemporary artist who is at the time the founder of an engraving plant and a successful businessman - who managed to interest the Czech graphical market of the second half of the 18-th century. As well as, I try to clarify, on base of the critical studying of available sources and literature, the circumstances which lead the artist to the graphical performance of the Norbert Grund's painting works. And last but not least I would like to outline the production of Jan Jiří Balzer in context of the contemporary creation and collecting of the 18-th century.
