Abstract:

Artists throughout the centuries have infused art their art with their ideological outlook in order to persuade, educate or shock target audiences. Typically, these ideologies, revolve around religious and political systems. However, they can also encompass unpopular and revolting subject matter that many people choose to avoid. I embrace this tactic in my art and cast myself in the role of social critic and propagandist.

I create art with the intent to shed light on the effects of greed, because it serves as a disastrous catalyst for numerous problems within our society. These problems are addressed in my sculptures and prints by focusing on issues relating to agribusiness and the use of animals in industry.

The general public is not exposed to sufficient information regarding these negative aspects. They include the annual abuse of billions of animals for human consumption, as well as for clothing and product testing. Environmental damage caused by feedlots and pesticides should be a major concern, but is often overlooked. People need information in order to make knowledgeable decisions concerning what they eat and what they feed their children.

Therefore, by avoiding the abstract and the esoteric, and by creating visually appealing and potentially educational art, it is my intent to interest and inform my audience. This kind of easily-readable, propagandistic art can shed light on these subjects and is one step toward reform. Art holds an extraordinary power when it comes to influencing the masses and can be used as an educational tool to ignite positive social change. Like an artistic Pied Piper, this body of work is intended to lead an audience down the road to moral and culinary enlightenment.

This thesis supports the Master of Fine Arts exhibition entitled "Inspired Industry" at Johnson City Area Arts Council, Johnson City, Tennessee, from November 14 - December 22, 2005. It is the culmination of studies and research affected by the artist's own industry vis-à-vis personal inspirations, including: discussion of aesthetics and personal utilization of the techniques learned in relation to both functional and non-functional ceramic forms. This is a self-evaluation of personal preferences and how this body of ceramic work evolved.

Abstract:
Cities form from layers of different elements and uses to create an urban fabric. These elements include the location, geography, demography, culture, transportation, and building type. Buildings can be thought of in a similar way. Today, successful urban and building design engages in the idea of mixed-use, not only in the program, but in the diversity of spaces created and users of the space. One lost layer to Alexandria is at the northern edge of Old Town. This area is bookended by the Potomac Electric Power Company's abandoned power plant. The site sits along the Alexandria waterfront and Mount Vernon Trail with views looking toward Washington, DC. The power plant closed its doors in 2012 and there are no plans yet to redevelop the site. To regenerate new life to this neighborhood, a new satellite campus for Virginia Tech']s Schools of Visual and Performing Arts will replace the abandoned plant. This campus aims to integrate a long lost piece of Alexandria's waterfront to the city and community. The signature building of this campus is a two-stage theatre that weaves together the new student body with the existing Alexandrian community.

Abstract:
This dissertation is a history of the development of the Canadian federal government's music industry policies from about 1970 to 1998. Over this period the government undertook a number of significant initiatives that mark the emergence of the Canadian music industry as a distinctive object of federal policy. The resulting account is not a single, linear narrative but unfolds in three separate but related streams, based on the following policies: Canadian content quotas for radio, the Sound Recording Development Program (a funding program to support the production and marketing of sound recordings), and revisions to Canada's copyright regime, such as neighbouring rights and a home taping levy. Each of these policies has a distinct history, originating in different areas of government at different times. Together, they do not form a consistent whole as much as an overlapping set of separate "policy assemblages," incorporating distinctive policy instruments and particular configurations of the Canadian music industry. Drawing on Michel Callon's work on the construction of markets, the dissertation explores the various ways in which the Canadian music industry enters into cultural policy through its associations with other extant policy formations. Canada's music industry appears in various roles in this history – as a supplier of programming for broadcasters, as a sector comparable to other 'cultural industries' such as film production and book publishing, and as the representative of the rights of artists and creators. Finally, the dissertation examines the ways in which these conceptions begin to cohere through the efforts of government and the industry representati

This project aims to analyze and evaluate the company Electronic Arts, Inc. (EA). This work is part of the Final Work of the Master's in Finance Program of the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão (ISEG), Universidade de Lisboa, prepared according to the format recommended by the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute. In terms of valuation, we have reviewed the company's finances and management over the past seven years and forecast its financial performance over the next five years. The research conducted is based on the bibliographic and documentary research available up to March 31, 2018, considered of major relevance to this study. No information, event or circumstance after this date has been considered. The valuation to determine the target price was achieved by averaging two valuation methods, using the discounted cash flow method, applying the perpetuity growth model and the multiple method over the terminal value. The assumptions considered to make the financial forecast were the result of the available data publicly disclosed by the company. Given the study developed, we consider a buy recommendation over EA stocks, with a target price of USD $107.89 for 2019, representing an appreciation potential of 34% compared to the last closing price US $80.37 release on January 2, 2019.

Abstract:
The research question permeating this thesis is how to address effectively the gap in the Arts and Culture in Dubai, a city that has prospered so well economically and financially in recent decades. Therefore, my focus is on those activities and events relating to literature, the visual arts, music, theatre and film - all reflecting the cultural lead Dubai is rapidly assuming in these spheres. The research is the first of its kind about Dubai. In such a study, some limitations need to be established. Specifically, I want to focus on the recognized strengths and weaknesses of the current management of cultural activities and policies and also on the advantages and disadvantages and the opportunities available. Consequently, in this thesis, it is necessary to take into account aspects such as history, politics, geo-politics, climate, people, ethnicity, religion and other aspects that constitute the cultural life of the emirate. Dubai is a rich blend of tradition and modernity, reflected in its various libraries, art galleries, theatres, and museums. It uniquely possesses the infrastructure needed to support the cultural vision of its leadership. As the emirate of Dubai increasingly assumes a greater cosmopolitan character, its emergence as the cultural hub of the region is certainly assured. However, no study has been undertaken as yet that analyses the current situation, the problems and opportunities it faces in terms of its cultural management, and ways to enhance Dubai's undoubted leadership in cultural matters. My own work over many years with the Dubai Cultural Council has convinced me that such a study is vital and it is my hope that the work presented in this thesis will contribute to the clarification of the current situation and indicate useful and appropriate directions to proceed in the future in terms of cultural management in Dubai.

Measell, James Scott. "A provincial school of art and local industry : the Stourbridge School of Art and its relations with the glass industry of the Stourbridge district, 1850-1905." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2016. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7008/.

Full text
Abstract:
Founded in 1851, the Stourbridge School of Art offered instruction in drawing, art and design to students engaged in industries, especially glass. Using social history methodology and primary sources such as Government reports, local newspapers and school records, this thesis explores the school’s development from 1850 to 1905 and explicates its relationships with the local glass industry. Within the context of political, economic, social and cultural forces, the school contributed to the town’s civic culture and was supported by gentry, clergy and industrialists. The governing Council held public meetings and art exhibitions and dealt with management issues. Working class men attended evening classes. Women from wealthy families attended morning classes. This thesis argues that a fundamental disconnect existed between the school’s purpose (art instruction to train designers) and its instruction (basic drawing and fine art). The school enrolled men employed in glass decorating but few from glass manufacturing. Classes reflected the South Kensington curriculum, and the art masters were unaware of the design needs of industry. Glass manufacturing firms provided modest financial support but did not encourage employees to attend, creating frustration for the Council. In contrast, similar schools in Brierley Hill and Wordsley were well-supported by the glass industry.

Paskins, M. "Sentimental industry : the Society of Arts and the encouragement of public useful knowledge, 1754-1848." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2014. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1449256/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis offers a reinterpretation of the activities of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, an economic society founded in London in 1754. Previous histories of the Society have attempted to accommodate it within normative accounts of industrial development; or have celebrated its philanthropic intentions; or have focused on one aspect of its multifarious activities. I argue that the Society should be interpreted as a place where a wide-ranging public ethos and the promotion of public knowledge were meant to coexist. This meant a collision between an ethos of gentlemanly many-mindedness and the particular interests of individual trades, fraught negotiations about the question of the public, and involvement in practices of natural knowledge which were intended to render tacit knowledge explicit. How far any of this activity actually encouraged manufactures or commerce is debatable: nevertheless, the Society offers a vantage point from which we can see the difficulty of coordinating and aggregating local exemplary achievements and inventions. Individual chapters consider the Society's efforts in the fields of mechanics, import substitution, agriculture, and tree planting.

Abstract:
This study seeks to determine if media ownership diversity remains at levels widely considered to be competitive and acceptable, despite consolidation within the media industry. The research augments the many studies analyzing programming diversity within the U. S. media industry. Rather than analyzing programming content, this study addresses ownership diversity by examining the diversity of media ownership within the context U. S. model, considered to be more of a decentralized, market-driven media industry when compared to other countries such as the United Kingdom or Canada. To measure diversity, the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI)--a measure of economic diversity widely used by economists as well as government regulatory agencies--is used. Suggestions are presented for the future of media and regulation to insure a competitive, diverse, and healthy media industry.

In 2013, the Rana Plaza Complex in Bangladesh collapsed claiming the lives of 1134 RMGworkers. This event ignited foreign stakeholders applying pressure on factories within the sectorto uphold adequete safety measures and address concerns over labour rights. The ILO and EUhave since conducted surveys and forwarded recommendations toward what they considerpositive change, in a comittment to improve labour rights and factory safety. Abstract:
The Indian entertainment industry has firmly cemented its place on the global map of cinema. With more than 1000 multilingual films being produced every year, it has had great impact upon the world of fashion, music and dance. The Indian entertainment industry is in a favorable phase right now driven by ground-breaking changes such as the advent of new leaders, increased usage of technology, new ways of storytelling and new stories being told. Though it started out by being dominated by a handful of people, it has evolved to allow the growth of leaders who shaped its progress. This paper analyses the transformation of leadership styles within the industry and explores how the change in audiences’ tastes and expectations, nepotism, the role of fashion designers, the role of women and the Indian diaspora have produced leaders through the years and how this has resulted in the continuous transformation of its definition of leadership and leadership.

In recent years the video game industry has been of great importance in the business world beyond the role of a cultural medium. With its huge size and potential for more growth, the industry has attracted many newcomers. The target customers are expanding to females and elders who have not been known to be game players. Moreover, the introduction of new platforms, personal computers and mobile devices, broadens the application of the video games. Because of its diversified mechanisms and platforms, the business models of the gaming industry have evolved. In this thesis, the traditional and newly invented business models are introduced with an analysis of pros and cons through real cases of gaming companies. The analysis of Activision-Blizzard and Electronic Arts shows the current business strategies of two giants in the industry, "diversification" and "casual games". Moreover, the huge difference of financial performances of two companies indicates the risk of an overbroad portfolio and investment in an unfamiliar genre.

Abstract:
Much work has been done over the past two decades exploring and creating many collaborative, cross-sector environments between arts, computer sciences and research that have supported the production of art, including: new media labs; co- working spaces; media focused gallery spaces; electronic art festivals; and the Internet itself. Less research has been done into the possibilities that exist in collaborations between the arts and commercial digital industries. The combination of two distinct and powerful hierarchical systems has forced a revision of current working practice within each field. This research interrogates the impact of collaborations between the arts and commercial digital industries, and identifies the impact of those collaborations upon curatorial and artistic modes of practice, with a particular focus on production. It identifies some of the inherent value systems, and describes a range of collaborative modes of artistic production that sit along a spectrum of power balances between the arts and commercial digital industry sectors, from Brand Marketing to Artist Practice as Business. The areas of difference in roles and working practices identified through both case studies and curatorial projects include factors such as: Value and Money, Time and Capacity, Crediting and Intellectual Property, and Roles and Working Practices. The curatorial projects include Dear Angel a commission of participatory art which uses both digital and other media, a NESTA Digital R&D for the Arts proposal, and for Thinking Digital Arts, a commission of an artwork by an artist/creative technologist partnership, and a digital (art) hack production workshop. How the curatorial role works in the interface between the arts and commercial digital industries is analysed. The patterns of difference and the power balances identified in the research aim to be useful to other practitioners.

Abstract:
This project is an examination of the Hong Kong film industry, focusing on the years leading up to the handover of Hong Kong to communist China. The influence of classical Chinese culture on gender representation in martial arts films is examined in order to formulate an understanding of how these films use gender issues to negotiate a sense of cultural identity in the face of unprecedented political change. In particular, the films of Hong Kong action stars Michelle Yeoh and Brigitte Lin are studied within a feminist and cultural studies framework for indications of identity formation through the highlighting of gender issues.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditionally, movie theater audience members are passive participants. The role of the traditional spectator is to sit down in a dark theater and watch as the film unfolds. As images flash across the screen, the audience member has no obligations. All they have to do is react. However a new, more actively engaged audience member is now emerging. The new role of the active audience member can be defined as putting a conscious effort into affecting one's own movie-watching experience. The trend we are now seeing in cinema is that of an interactive experience in motion picture creation and exhibition, and it utilizes this updated spectator role to great effect. Whether the audience member has a role in actually making the film, as is the case with crowdsourced cinema, or if they are actively involved after the film is created, as is the case with shadow casts and "choose your own ending" movies, going to the movies has become a much more active experience. The fascinating implications of this interactive cinematic movement for artists, audiences, and the exhibition industry cannot be understated. This thesis will explore some of the biggest interactive trends in filmmaking and exhibition today, and then delve into the implications of these trends.

Abstract:

Non-profit theater companies around the United States struggle to attract younger audience members, which becomes a bigger problem with each passing year as their current consumer base is dying from old age. This paper discusses using nostalgia as a method of attracting the millennial generation to attend the theater. The paper first analyzes the middle class millennial and the reasons that they choose to not attend the theater. The paper continues by defining nostalgia, its history, and its effects on the individual and on consumer behavior. The paper lists examples in other forms of entertainment that compete with theater and in retail that have used strategies with nostalgia that have proven to be successful with the millennial generation. The paper ends by observing how nostalgia has been successful in theater and provides tactics and strategies for theater companies as possible solutions to the lack of younger audience members.

Abstract:
The research explores the rationale and the implications of an imposed curriculum innovation, the introduction of computer aided design, (CAD), into fashion design courses. The work is a singular, personal exploration of the phenomenon CAD; it is seeking explanations and does not attempt to offer generalisations or theories. The study examines theories and ideas of creativity, and the process of design in the production of fashion garments. Philosophical, psychological and physiological ideas and attitudes that cluster around the concept 'design' are examined. The transient nature of knowledge assumes increasing importance as the study progresses. The field work covered three major areas. First, a survey of CAD systems and their use in the British clothing industry was undertaken in 1985. This provided a 'snapshot' of aims and attitudes towards CAD at that time. Contacts with the same companies in 1989 showed that some perceptions of CAD had changed. Second, studies were made of the use of CAD in the design process. The research was directed towards the activities of individual students when using CAD, with reference to their process of design, their thinking style, and their personality. Third, the possibilities of CAD were explored in a commercial design context. Theoretical and personal explorations and experiences of the use of CAD were undertaken and recorded. Design projects and artefacts were realised. In order to extend knowledge of computer aided design, a CAD system with a differing set of priorities from established commercial systems was developed. This was done in co-operation with a commercial software house, Concept II Research; the software programme ORMUS-FASHION was created. The system was used in the field studies with students, and for personal design work. The research offers new insights into the accessibility of CAD to the fashion/textile designer, regardless of his or her technological knowledge. It demonstrates that CAD is not neccessarily a preserve of the logical mind. The effective use of CAD in the Fashion Industry is related to a wider set of human characteristics, motives and changing processes of. creative thought; and these are, of course, very often illogical. It is a case study which shows knowledge being selectively changed, intentionally changed, individually changed, collectively changed, experientially changed, unconsciously changed, inexplicably changed, continually changed. There is no access to things as they are.

Wakeman, Diane Marie. "Workin’ from Cain to Cain’t: Challenges within Florida’s Gulf Coast Oyster Industry." Scholar Commons, 2009. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/74.

Full text
Abstract:
Oyster tongers are a cultural icon of Florida's maritime heritage and geography. Challenged for generations by the vagaries of weather, including catastrophic storms and years-long droughts, and economic uncertainties this maritime heritage is fading fast. While Florida's north and west coasts produce 90 percent of the Florida oyster harvest and ten percent of oysters consumed in the United States, the industry is at risk today for reasons including a declining demand for Florida oysters because of health concerns; water pollution; population growth and its accompanying development of condominiums, gated communities, and retail shopping centers; and declining interest in the hard work of oystering as a livelihood. This work investigates those challenges to Florida's Gulf Coast oyster industry through the lens of a twenty-first century consumer. I examine why the U.S. Department of Agriculture considers raw oysters a significant challenge to public health and how local, state, and federal government regulations, along with cooperative efforts of the seafood industry, offset the potential for oysters to convey foodborne illness to human consumers. The fact that raw oysters carry a high propensity for conveying bacterial disease makes them a unique marketing challenge, especially outside of months that have an r in them. As a subject of culinary tourism, Florida oystering maintains an iconic maritime heritage. The labor force of the commercial oystering business has ranged widely-from migrant mothers working with toddlers at their side and their school-age children forgoing education for shucking oysters at the turn of the twentieth century to a new, Hispanic work force whose strong work ethic heartily satisfies oyster processors as local interest for the hard work in the industry declines. The threat to sustainability of both the working traditions of the Apalachicola oyster folk, and the oysters themselves as a bountiful resource, grows in direct proportion to the environmental pressures fostered by rapid and poorly-regulated population growth. A legitimate question might be, given the difficulties of the work and challenges to the industry, is it worth the state's effort to help sustain this industry?

Abstract:
IPCC, WHO and FAO have recently published reports connecting the animal industry with Global warming, cancer and 70% of modern diseases. In fact, IPCC (2014) indicated that the greatest potential for reducing emissions is placed on the consumer’s level. For this context, grounded in concepts of the Foucauldian Discourse Analysis and the Compositional Analysis (Rose, 2001) this study analyzed a series of advertisements issued in the period after the reports (2013-2015). The analysis was guided by three central questions: (1) Which linguistic and visual approaches, as well as their organization and strategies applied in the discourse, is the Animal Industry using in the construction of their advertisements and how they react to this moment of crises? (2) Considering Barthes ́ approach of food as symbols containing a communicational construction, what are the meanings built around animal products understood from the perspective of discourse? (3) How is the Animal Industry positioning themselves towards audiences and culture and what functions are they giving to themselves in society? Following a political theoretical framework, the proposition that the animal commodification is an ideology affirmed in western societies will be discussed. Advertisements from seven enterprises of the Animal Industry in EU will be used, selected for having leading positions in their sectors (meat and dairy). Among the results, it was verified that the relation toward human interaction is the major enunciator in the advertisements. The following lines of enunciation were identified: example and empathy; imperative discourses; tradition. The enunciations of meat have emotional basis; while the constructions around dairy focuses on the western representation of archaic nature (Haraway, 1989). The denotative qualities of the foods where very little considered. The political and ethical questions around the animal products were absent. This study focuses on the necessity of a political and critical approach of the marketing strategies of the Animal Industry. KEY WORDS: Animal Industry, Global Warming, Discourse Analysis, Foucault

Abstract:
Since its inception, the video game industry has been both a new medium for art and innovation as well as a major driving force in the advancements of many technologies. The often overlooked video game industry has turned from a hobby to a multi-billion dollar industry in its short, forty year life. People of all ages and genders across the world are playing video games at a higher clip than ever before. With so many new gamers and emerging technologies, it is an exciting time for the industry. The landscape is constantly changing and successful business models of the past will need to find ways to adapt if they wish to remain successful in the growing industry. Looking at how past trends and technological innovations have driven the industry gives understanding and insight into where it is at today and where it will go in the future. Video games have become an interactive art medium which inspires users to explore and create. The digitalization of games and their extreme popularity reflect our instinctive desire to seek out game-playing for its fun, cooperative, and competitive nature.

Fenwick, Melissa E. "Reel Images: Representations of Adult Male Prisons by the Film Industry." Scholar Commons, 2009. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/1962.

Abstract:
Research on the criminal justice system, punishment, and media continue to generate academic interest, particularly in the realm of social constructionism. The social construction perspective provides insight into the process through which media-controlled images are translated into social definitions of crime and justice. One new area of interest is the representations of prisons and penal culture by the entertainment media, namely the film industry. In this study, the author contributes to the area of social constructionist literature by administering a content analysis of eleven feature films on male prisons produced between 1979 and 2001. The author examines the frequency and context of several constructs of penal culture: drug use and trafficking, rape and sexual assault, violence, and gang affiliation. This research examines whether the representations of these issues in recent motion pictures are consistent with extant academic correctional literature. The present study found that within prison films the amount of portrayal of drug use and trafficking, and rape and sexual assault is consistent with the academic literature. Overall, when compared to the academic literature, prison movies under represent gang affiliation but within movies that portray gang affiliation, that portrayal is similar to the academic literature. Notably, heroin was the drug of choice depicted within prison films while academic correctional research in prisons shows marijuana as the drug of choice. The most significant finding was that the amount and type of violence, specifically murder, was overrepresented in prison films compared to the amount and type of violence reported within current academic research. The over emphasis on violence and killing within prison films and the representation of heroin as the major drug consumed and trafficked could lead to public misunderstanding about the realities of prison life and living conditions of the prison institution. This study provides not only noteworthy information concerning the representations of prison life and penal culture by the film industry but also insight into the inconsistencies between the information presented on film and that within academic correctional literature that are transferred via this medium to the general public.

Wick, Jodie. "The infrastructure of the animation industry in the East of England between 2009 & 2011." Thesis, University of the Arts London, 2016. http://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/12066/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research investigates how the animation industry in the UK is defined. It proposes a new framework for data collection to quantify the extent of the sector, with particular focus on infrastructural requirements in the East of England. This thesis is designed to develop a potential model based on robust and methodologically sound research, that can better quantify animation and related activities from a regional perspective. It is not intended that this thesis will offer a solution to the understanding, or support requirements of the animation industry at a local level. Through developing enhanced measurement and definition, the research has the potential to affect the way that UK animation as a whole is understood, valued and supported. Based on detailed mixed method research and thorough analysis using the East of England as a case study, the thesis proposes recommendations for new approaches to data collection and classification. The application of a ‘Grounded Theory’ approach has been developed using defined procedures and sounder theories and structures for potential future policy development. Previous studies of the creative industries recognised that Norwich and the East of England were identified as centres for excellence in Animation. This view was primarily based on assumptions rather than on mapping specific business and employment data. Inadequate subject analysis resulted in the development of unsubstantiated policies and therefore placing immediate limits on their effectiveness. By studying the East of England animation industry sector in detail, using primary research as well as government-recognised data, it was possible to develop new methods for collection and definition. Through analysis of a cross section of the UK animation sector and applying original models at regional level, the research clarifies the landscape of the animation sector and proposes a new framework model to contribute to future policy development.

Abstract:
The World Wide Web offers individual writers new possibilities for producing and distributing fiction. This dissertation begins with an in-depth look at who these writers are, what they are doing and the advantages and disadvantages the Web has compared to traditional publishing venues. The common goals of these writers and the various ties which bind them suggests that a community of writers has developed on the Web. No community exists in isolation, however, so the dissertation also looks at some of the other forces at work in society which may have an effect on this community. Transnational entertainment conglomerates, for instance, are attempting to change the underlying structure of the technology in order to reap potentially great profits from it; their efforts may result in diminishing the ability of individual writers to use the Web to effectively distribute their work. Governments, to use another example, can affect the way individuals use the medium by enacting laws restricting certain categories of content online or developing copyright laws which favour the interests of large entertainment producing corporations. Finally, writers publishing on the Web may have a disintermediating effect on traditional print publishing, with ramifications for, among others, publishing houses and bookstores. What emerges in this dissertation is a portrait of the complex web of relationships between individual and institutional stakeholders in this developing technology.
