Abstract:
This article stresses the need to develop a more systematic approach to data sources in a context of greater European comparative study. The work and initial findings of the European Directories Project to provide a resource guide of one universal European data source, the town directory, are outlined here. Pathways and mechanisms of directory evolution are considered with special reference to Germany. This is succeeded by a discussion of the problems associated with the compilation of a pan-European directory database and the potential difficulties associated with directory use in urban historical research.

Abstract:
The industrial towns of northern England have been largely overlooked during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. This article examines newspaper advertising, directories, public building and improvement in Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield and identifies a middling, consumerist society, where urban culture was firmly rooted in the localities in which it developed. The nature of this culture challenges simplistic understandings of metropolitan dominance and questions the utility of national models of consumerism and ‘politeness’ that ignore the importance of regional variation and provincialism.

Abstract:
How has the vision of the pioneers of ARLIS translated into the activities and achievements of the Society and its members in the present? The relationship of ARLIS and the National Art Library at the Victoria and Albert Museum has radically improved; collaborative projects in the areas of periodicals, slides and exhibition catalogues have yielded fruits in the form of union lists, surveys and directories; the longstanding Directory of members has been joined by a new directory documenting art, design and architecture resources in the UK and Ireland. However, as the Follett Report shows, the demands on libraries in the UK are heavier than ever before and will continue to increase, meaning that libraries will have to find new strategies to keep abreast of demand and take advantage of the new technologies. ARLIS should broaden its membership and may be able to achieve some of its long-term goals through the Visual Arts Library and Information Plan. This article is a revised version of a paper delivered to the 25th Anniversary Conference of ARLIS/UK & Ireland, London, 7th-10th April 1994.

Abstract:
Were England's old shire towns marginalized from the process of economic change during the period of the classical Industrial Revolution? A number of contributors to The Cambridge Urban History of Britain, Vol. II make this claim, others emphasize the continued relevance of these towns in the emerging industrial age. With few investigations undertaken into the county towns of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, detailed case study analysis is needed. Using trade directories to profile Chelmsford's business community, this article presents evidence of a dynamic and prosperous urban economy.

Abstract:
This study explores ALA membership among directors at small liberal arts colleges. Results show that directors at the smallest colleges are much less likely to be members of ALA and ACRL than their colleagues at larger colleges are. The study investigates trends based on the director’s level of completed education, the director’s tenure at her or his institution, and the relative size of the institutions. The discussion questions why directors at smaller colleges are less likely to be members of ALA and ACRL and examines how those associations might expand their services among these individuals.

Abstract:
In developing world, most decisions by Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to adopt social media marketing technology (SMMT) rely heavily on study findings from the Western World without much recourse to cross-context differences in structure and managerial capabilities. Thus, the lack of inquiries that provide complete guideline on the adoption of SMMT in developing economies hinders the development of integrated framework(s) that explains MSMEs’ successful adoption. The study used technology–organization–environment (T-O-E) framework as the theoretical basis to examine the critical factors that stimulate MSMEs adoption of SMMT in Nigeria. The adopted methodological choice was qualitative, involving interviews with 20 participants selected from the online directories via purposive and snowball sampling techniques. However, thematic analysis was the data treatment technique; and the study extended the T-O-E framework to provide an understanding into the dominant factors that specifically influence MSMEs’ adoption, without losing sight of vendors who would rely on the extended framework to get audiences continually satisfied.

Abstract:
Passenger coach services grew enormously in England and Wales between 1681 and 1836. This article documents the spatial patterns using data from trade directories, original maps and geographic information systems. Digital mapping illustrates the development of long-distance services from London to various destinations, including resorts, ports, industrial towns and county towns. Mapping also illustrates the development of Country services between provincial towns, especially major hubs like Manchester and Birmingham, and commuter traffic around large conurbations. Overall the maps and figures point to substantial change in destinations and the structure of the coach network. Country coach services increased after the 1790s to complement the London services. By 1835, an extensive, interlinked network of long-stage coaches grew across the country and a radial network of daily-return services grew on roads leading into London. Beyond coaching, our findings illustrate how traditional primary sources can yield new insights when combined with geographic information systems.

M.F.A.
RENT: A Director's Process describes the process a director undergoes in the creation of a piece of theater. It uses as its example Temple Theaters' 2010 production of RENT, and it examines how an MFA thesis production encapsulates the material garnered over three years' intensive study in a conservatory setting of the art and craft of directing. It explores the methodologies behind the pre-production process, including concept, approach, design, and casting, and continues into the production process, including rehearsal and performance. This thesis suggests a method of directing that is based on a formal approach, and shows this method to be as applicable to populist styles, such as musical theater, as it is to more experimental forms.

Abstract:
This text is partial record and narrative of the process and productions of Orphans by Lyle Kessler that opened on March 29th 2007 for a four day run ending on April 1st, The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh that opened October 28th 2007 for a three day run ending on October 30th, and Terra Nova by Ted Tally that opened on February 21st 2008 for a four day run ending on February 24th. The majority of the text follows the three shows from Spring 2007, Fall 2007, to Spring 2008, focusing on the process of direction of each production. Incorporated in the writing are the experiences, lessons, and complications that arose while directing the three shows. The text contains several notes on directing, acting, collaboration, choreography, casting, rehearsal and different perspectives on the creative process of the productions: all combined create an aesthetic inherent in the author's three years of study at the Virginia Commonwealth University Theatre Pedagogy Program with an emphasis in Acting and Directing.

Taouya-Joseph, Catherine. "Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly et les arts visuels." Thesis, Paris 4, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA040073.

Full text
Abstract:
Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly and the visual arts could be a paradoxical thesis because Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly is considered as incompetent in the artistic domain. Catholic, novelist, diarist, letter writer, and controversial art critic, he is regarded as one of the most unclassifiable authors of the XIXth century. He is one of the last romantics, but also one of the precursors of symbolism. His suggestive writing stimulates the reader’s imagination. If the art critic is controversial, yet the judgment must be qualified. His profane and religious esthetic way of writing suggests a real transposition of master works of arts, rivaling painting and sculpture. Some specific colours keep recurring so that they become the object of an obvious liturgical declension. Graphically, his taste for colour is demonstrated by his manuscripts. Barbey reveals to the world a pictorial way of writing, but also his personality is a source of inspiration and representation for numerous artists. In this thesis, the reader becomes attracted by the reception of his character, a Spectacular Dandy, who becomes a work of art himself for his contemporaries: the sculptors Zacharie Astruc and Auguste Rodin made bronze busts of him. Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly inspires the whole field of the visual arts, from illustrators of his published books, up to adapters, directors, film-makers and television directors

Abstract:
By the 20th Century, tax codes made a distinction between for-profit and not-for-profit organisations. The distinction was that not-for- profits were to supply a service to society like hospitals, churches and museums. The distinctions are no longer clear. There is a demand for 'new breed' or hybrid directors in an environment favoring economic capital and searching for people who can be champions for social capital. This international cross-disciplinary research explores the leadership challenge through personal interviews and survey feedback with 72 museum directors or associate directors across Australia, the United States, England and Canada. Organisation psychology and management theory is brought to the field of art history. Art history is the traditional breeding ground for museum directors. In concluding, the thesis argues for a range of propositions to address the current leadership crisis in art museums based on a new understanding of leadership and leadership development

Abstract:
The subject of this chapter is the conditions of the film industry in Turkey and the effects of the invisible pressures of the male-dominated system have on female directors and their productions. The basic question to be analysed is whether the problems they face are related to their gender and patriarchal system. Interviews will be conducted with female directors in order to understand the processes of production they undergo within the industry, the factors which influence their narrative choices, as well as to unpack the meaning of what it entails to be a “woman”/“female” director.

Abstract:
New Wave film exhibits a wealth of interactions with painting, ranging from the most literal inscriptions - the referencing of paintings, presence of painter figures and recording of the act of painting - to a plethora of more subterranean interactions. Taking Eric Rohmer's essay 'The Century of Painters' and André Bazin's'Painting and Cinema' as its starting point, this chapter analyses the movement's appropriation and reframing of the visual arts. Revisiting Jean-Luc Godard's incorporation of artworks in his films,it considers the director's practicealongside two filmmakers who were trained in the fine arts, AgnèsVarda and Guy Gilles. The chapter investigates seminal intermedial figurations such as the tableau vivant, as well as charting the three directors' varied engagement with a visual heritage no longer perceived as a restrictive model, but, on the contrary, as a rich repository of iconographies, motifs and techniques to be appropriated and reimagined.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the National Endowment for the Arts’s (NEA’s) jazz program, Expansion Arts division, Bicentennial fellowships for “jazz/folk/ethnic” artists, and Folk Arts division. While the NEA mirrored a policy of matching requirements in its Treasury grants—which supported predominantly symphony orchestras—it also provided several millions of dollars to otherwise underrepresented and undersupported artists and communities. Not only were the NEA’s officers keenly committed to helping jazz and folk music, but also they brought in experts from urban, suburban, and rural communities to work as program directors. Vantile Whitfield and A. B. Spellman—key figures in the black arts movement of the 1970s—became directors. These experts recruited panelists of a broader geographical, racial, and gender representation, and similarly funded more diverse musicians and artists. Compared to the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations, which rarely provided funding to jazz or the music of minority communities, the government agency was a lifeline to otherwise unseen and unheard cultural practices.
