Abstract:
Halodimethylsulfonium halide 1, which is readily formed in situ from hydrohaloic acid and DMSO, is a good nucleophilic halide. This activated nucleophilic halide rapidly converts aryldiazonium salt prepared in situ by the same hydrohaloic acid and nitrite ion to aryl chlorides, bromides, or iodides in good yield. The combined action of nitrite ion and hydrohaloic acid in DMSO is required for the direct transformation of aromatic amines, which results in the production of aryl halides within 1 h. Several new organic transformations have been achieved utilizing boron halide reagents. Aryl aldehydes are conveniently converted to gem-dichloromethylbenzenes using boron trichloride. Aryl aldehydes are alkylated by alkylboron chlorides in a Grignard-like fashion to generate the corresponding arylalkanols or alkylboron chlorides. Aryl aldehydes react with divinylboron halides (generated via the haloboration of alkynes) to produce 1,5-di-halo-1,4-dienes in excellent yields.

Palladium chloride anchored on polystyrene modified by 5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline was prepared and used as catalysts for the Suzuki cross-coupling reactions of aryl halide with arylboronic acid in supercritical carbon dioxide without use of organic solvent. It can be easily separated from the reaction mixture and reused for six recycles without significant loss of catalytic activity.

In the last few decades, organotin hydrides have proven their potential as building blocks for a great variety of organometallic compounds. In this context, organotin hydrides with sterically shielding aryl substituents have attracted special interest, as these ligands can kinetically stabilize metastable products. The selective synthesis of aryltin halide compounds Ar*2SnCl2 and Ar*SnI3 featuring the highly sterically encumbered aryl ligand Ar* (iPrAr* = 2,6-(Ph2CH)2-4-iPrC6H2; MeAr* = 2,6-(Ph2CH)2-4-MeC6H2) is presented. Aryl-Cu(III) species have been often implicated as the intermediate species that operate Ullmann-type couplings. However, such species have long remained elusive and the fundamental pathways that govern Ullmann-type couplings, first discovered in the beginning of the last century, are still under debate. The first part of this thesis deals with the reactivity of a well-defined aryl-Cu(III) complex in the presence of sulphur, selenium and phosphorus-based nucleophiles. The results obtained demonstrate the plausibility of Cu(I)/Cu(III) redox cycles in copper-catalysed C-S, C-Se and C-P cross-cou

Formation of the diaryl ether moiety remains a challenging target for organic synthesis despite modern technologies, however, better understanding of older techniques often leads to improvements. The copper-catalysed Ullmann ether synthesis, whilst attractive in many ways, is frequently problematic due to the inherent irreproducibility of the reaction on scale up. Little is yet known about the mechanism of the reaction and conflicting views are rife within the scientific community. In a well-studied example, we show that the potassium iodide formed during the reaction slows catalysis. Addition

A novel reaction for the dehalogenation of aryl halides is discussed in terms of its stoichiometry, mechanism, yields and potential for analytical purposes. The active dehalogenation reagent can be prepared through the reaction of molten potassium with polyethylene glycols (MW $>$ 200), in the absence of oxygen, to form the corresponding potassium glycolate, a powerful nucleophilic agent. This reaction is applied to the determination of PCBs in waste oils. Abstract:
This thesis describes studies of a "kinetic template effect" which assists the formation of arylphosphonium salts from aryl halides and tertiary phosphines in the presence of a transition metal halide catalyst in refluxing ethanol. The "kinetic template effect" arises from the presence in the aryl halide of a limited range of orthosubstituents capable of intramolecular coordination with the metal at a critical stage of the reaction. In Chapter One, the "kinetic template effect" is compared with the better known "thermodynamic template effect". Earlier work on related "kinetic template effects"

The Pd-catalyzed amination of aryl halides (Buchwald-Hartwig amination) has become a versatile and widely used technology to synthesize and produce aromatic amines relevant in pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries. The methodologies used were not traditional and focused on kinetic studies, carried out using in-situ tools, mainly reaction calorimetry.
