Full textThis essay is about how the aesir are used as an ideal image of the original Nordic aspects and as a symbol of heroism and pure strength. The main subject of this essay is to look at how this ideal of masculinity is represented in the art produced during the era of romantic nationalism. The choice of focusing on this era in particular is made due to the fact that it was during this time that the modern images of the aesir and the Vikings were made. The purpose of this study is to examine how the ideal of masculinity reflects upon the artistic interpretations of the Norse mythology in a selected group of art work produced during the 1800’s. Further more research is done in order to look for the possible political messages that could be connected to these works of art.
The writing of this essay has meant a search for facts in books concerning romantic nationalism, Norse mythology and interpretation of Norse mythology, and finally depiction of the Norse mythology in the romantic nationalistic art during the 19th century. This work has been combined with analyses of a selected number of works of art produced during the 1800’s. Some limitations have been done in selecting this art, considering the year of completion and the motif. Due to these limitations, all of the selected works were made within the time of the 19th century and depict male gods of the Norse mythology.
Following conclusions can be made from this study: (1) that during periods of the 19th century the aesir were seen as strong warriors with a clearly Nordic origin; (2) this ideology was expressed in different ways in the art of the time and was later on also used by the racial ideological sciences.
Studiens frågeställningar har varit följande;

Full textIn X-linked familial hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH), MEPE (Matrix Extracellular PhosphoglycoprotEin) is cleaved, releasing phosphorylated ASARM (acidic serine- and aspartate- rich motif) peptides that inhibit mineralization of bone extracellular matrix (ECM), and renal tubular phosphate reabsorption. We recently identified high levels of MEPE-derived ASARM peptides in human XLH dentin. The present study was aimed to investigate their effects on dentin mineralization in order to better understand their role in the etiology of tooth abnormalities observed in XLH patients. Dental pulp stem cells derived from deciduous teeth (SHEDs) were seeded in a collagen scaffold, cultured in human tooth slices under mineralizing conditions as a control, and with 20 µM of either phosphorylated (p-ASARM) or non-phosphorylated (np-ASARM) MEPE-derived ASARM peptides. Mineralization was assessed by scanning electron microscopy and von Kossa staining. Odontogenic markers (DSPP, osteocalcin, MEPE) were assessed by immunohistochemistry, RT-PCR and Western blot. In parallel, agarose beads soaked with recombinant ASARM peptides were implanted in a rat pulp injury model where a reparative dentin bridge is spontaneously formed; the repair process was evaluated by micro-CT and IHC. In the tooth slice culture model, p-ASARM inhibited SHED differentiation, with 1) no formation of mineralization nodule, 2) decreased odontogenic marker expression, and 3) up-regulation of MEPE expression, in contrast with np-ASARM and control. In the rat pulp injury model, p-ASARM impaired the formation of the reparative dentin bridge and increased MEPE expression. The present data support our hypothesis that p-ASARM impairs odontogenic differentiation process and the resulting mineralization of dentin. Moreover, the identification of a stimulating effect of p-ASARM on MEPE expression suggests a positive feedback loop in the pathogenicity of XLH disease. Accordingly, the mineralized defects in XLH tooth dentin may be a direct consequence of the release of ASARM peptides in the ECM

Full textThis essay shed light over the connection between the literary style from the works of two “modernistas” authors: Julián del Casal and Delmira Agustini, and the cultural contexts and sexual mores at the end of the 19th century. The social dynamics of the ever expansive night life, the lurid and ubiquitous tabloids of the time and the growing interests towards deviant sexual behaviors and women’s perspective in books, everything will align with certain guideline of the late Romanticism and Symbolism to shape new voices and expressions of desire. The Modernistas’ retraction from sentimentalism and their maudit pose suit the remodeling of the sexual; the rarified object from the symbolist axiom dictates an evermore rarified new object: the one of the male body and its locus in the nascent representation of women’s and deviants’ libidos.

Full textBackground and Aims: Increasing rates of substance use and substance use disorders especially in adolescents and young adults, changing patterns of use and associated problems and the introduction of new therapies and programs of care (prevention, early intervention, therapy, rehabilitation) require new need and allocation models especially because of restricted financial and care resources. These models should provide a rational basis for the improvement of allocation processes as well as setting priorities in the provision and restructuring of community and patientoriented interventions. In the present paper, we will present a project of the ASAT research network program which aims at a multi-staged, integrated epidemiology-based need and program evaluation in an area to determine institutional and therapeutical allocation processes. Methods: Based on a prospective epidemiological design, (1) prevalence and incidence, risk factors and course of substance use, abuse and dependence are investigated in a representative sample of the community-based EDSP study. Additionally, helpseeking behaviors, met and unmet need are assessed. (2) The investigation is supplemented by a survey of all substance use services in the area. (3) Course of substance use and service provision of substance use services in the area will be analyzed and reviewed to identify natural allocation processes and to determine the outcome. (4) With the knowledge of deficits and unmet need, improved allocation guidelines for specific groups of clients and patients will be developed. The results will be transferred into the regional health care system. Results and discussion: First results show that the identification of new risk groups with the help of course typologies is possible. The patterns of help-seeking point to a high rate of unmet need, especially with regard to the targeted early intervention, and a need of alternative allocation models. After the assessment and the overall data analyses, need evaluations and several alternative allocation models based on the clients'/patients' perspective will be provided

Since the emergence of RastafarI communities within 1930's Jamaica following the coronation of Ras Tafari Makonnen as Haile Selassie I, Negus (king) of Ethiopia, RastafarI continuously articulate his divinity within their discourse. While the specific nomenclature for and significance of Haile Selassie I may vary in accordance to time and affiliation, it is unquestionable that Selassie I remains central to the RastafarI way of life for more than 70 years. What scholars and thinkers on RastafarI question, and very fervently so during the past 10 years, is the authenticity of the divinity of Selassie I within RastafarI thought. The few scholars who attempt to solve what for them is the "problem of authenticity," claim, through christological and apologistic approaches, that RastafarI need to reconsider the possibility of his status, as it is conjecture and blasphemy. Adhering to African epistemological assumptions that everything in existence comprises the whole of existence, we rely on an African symbolic approach to examine RastafarI conceptualizations of Selassie I within pre-coronation, coronation and post-coronation RastafarI writings. Given that the material reality seemingly degenerates the collective body and consciousness in accordance with the cycles of time as expressed within the most ancient of Kemetic cosmologies, our aim is to suggest that Haile Selassie I emerges as a ba, the soul template, of Asar, a force manifesting as the human ability and potential to exist within the material realm in accordance with the unseen realm of existence. We conclude, unlike previous academic thinkers who examine RastafarI thought, that RastafarI thinking about Haile Selassie I is therefore an authentic perspective, one that undoubtedly occurs in accordance with the structure and origin of the universe and the cyclical journey of Africana reclamation of a primordial consciousness.

Full textPreanalytical factors such as specimen handling are the most common source of error in laboratory medicine, suggesting a lack of knowledge about factors affecting sample stability. ALAT, ASAT and bilirubin are markers that underlie evaluation and treatment in liver diagnostics, therefore reliable test answers are of great importance. Objective: To review previous studies and compile the stability of ALAT, ASAT and bilirubin for different storage before and after centrifugation, different centrifuge settings, and in tubes with different additives.Method: A literature review was done through systematic search and processing of scientific articles related to the objective. Results: The studies on analyte stability of centrifuged samples showed great variance between the results, mainly due to the studies lasting for different lengths of time. One study comparing test tubes showed a five day difference for ASAT between PST and Barricor tubes. Centrifugation studies showed no difference in stability with the centrifugal settings used. Conclusion: The lack of studies with similar study designs makes it difficult to draw any certain conclusions about the stability in different storage conditions. The result suggests that neither different tube additives, centrifuge settings nor delayed centrifugation up to 24 hours affect the stability of ALAT, ASAT or bilirubin.

Full textThe knowledge of ocean surface winds is very important for oceanographic and meteorological studies as well as for practical applications. Considering the great difficulty of installation, operation and maintenance of instrumentation for the in situ measurement of marine winds, it is of high interest the development of methodologies for obtaining this variable by remote sensors. Although the wind field can be derived by the scatterometers, the spatial resolution of such data (25 km) is not adequate for applications over the coastal ocean. High-resolution wind data (500 1500 m) can be extracted from SAR images. This is possible because radar backscatter signal, after calibration into sigma-naught values, can be related to wind speed. In this context, the objective of this study was to determine the potential of the ASAR sensor, flying onboard the ENVISAT satellite, to extract high spatial resolution (~1 km) wind field (10 m above the sea surface). Wind speeds fields were determined using C-Band geophysical models and the wind direction data from the atmospheric model BRAMS and QuikSCAT scatterometer. Three geophysical models were used: CMOD4, CMOD5 and CMOD-IFR2. The final accuracy of this procedure was evaluated by comparing the ASAR winds speeds with wind speeds measurements from the QuickSCAT scatterometer and the BRAMS data. The results here presented show wind speeds with a mean correlation coefficient against QuikSCAT data of 0,75 and a RMS= 2 m/s when QuikSCAT wind directions were used as input to the model. The use of BRAMS wind directions yielded a mean RMS of 2,23 m/s and r=0,37 against BRAMS wind speed data. More accurate results were found with CMOD4 and CMOD-IFR2 models.

Full textThe international project AMMA, in which this work of thesis is linked, aims to improve comprehension of the phenomena related to monsoon in West Africa, and in particular, exchanges of energy between continental, oceanic surfaces and the atmosphere. Concerning continental surfaces, these exchanges are mainly controlled by vegetation quantity and soil moisture. In this context, the use of radar sensors, sensitive to these two factors, appears useful in areas where the cloud cover is often marked. However, no sensors used up to now (Wind SCatterometers and SAR) offers at the same time a wide spatial cover combined to high space and temporal resolutions. The SAR of second generation, such as the one on board ENVISAT, offers an interesting compromise between spatial and temporal resolutions. This work is based on the use of ENVISAT/ASAR data and is organized around three complementary axes: (1) Treatment and analyzes data acquired in Global Monitoring and Wide Swath modes. This study showed a stronger aptitude of this last one for the estimations of the soil moisture at kilometric scales, while keeping a large space cover. The use of radar data in a bi-objective assimilation algorithm, associated with optical data, helped to improve biomass and LAI estimation. (2) Acquisition of ground data (soil roughness and soil moisture) allowed us to determine, via radar models, that the radar signal is mainly controlled soil characteristics. (3) Empirical estimate and cartography of the soil moisture from radar signal. .

Full texthence automated approaches are crucial to maintain sustainability of agricultural activities. The objective of this research is to classify eight crop types cultivated in Karacabey Plain located in the north-west of Turkey using multi-temporal Kompsat-2 and Envisat ASAR satellite data. To fulfill this objective, first, the fused Kompsat-2 images were segmented separately to define homogenous agricultural patches. The segmentation results were evaluated using multiple goodness measures to find the optimum segments. Next, multispectral single-date Kompsat-2 images with the Envisat ASAR data were classified by MLC and SVMs algorithms. To combine the thematic information of the multi-temporal data set, probability maps were generated for each classification result and the accuracies of the thematic maps were then evaluated using segment-based manner. The results indicated that the segment-based approach based on the SVMs method using the multispectral Kompsat-2 and Envisat ASAR data provided the best classification accuracies. The combined thematic maps of June-August and June-July-August provided the highest overall accuracy and kappa value around 92% and 0.90, respectively, which was 4% better than the highest result computed with the MLC method. The produced thematic maps were also evaluated based on field-based manner and the analysis revealed that the classification performances are directly proportional to the size of the agricultural fields.
