Helminthes are recognized as a major problem to livestock production throughout the tropics. Parasitic helminthes affect human being and animals by causing considerable hardship and stunted growth. Most diseases caused by helminthes are of a chronic and debilitating in nature. The parasitic gastroenteritis is caused by mixed infection with several species of stomach intestinal worms, which results weaknesses, loss of appetite, decreased feed efficiency, reduced weight gain and decreased productivity. Indigenous chickens (Gallus domesticus) are the predominant poultry species kept under external systems in the rural and peri-urban poultry sector of Africa, which predispose them to various parasitic infections. The aim of the study was to utilize RNA-seq technology to characterize the village chicken transcriptome response to nematode infection and identify molecular mechanisms that underlie host resistance to gastro-intestinal nematodes. Village chickens representing two geographical regions of South Africa were studied. A survey analysis was conducted on 87 households from Limpopo (n = 39)

Fowls and their eggs provide animal protein for human populations. Parasites are very common in fowls and heavy infection can affect the growth, and egg production, and cause death. Fowls during feeding pick the parasitic infective stage by ingesting contaminated food, and water. There are two groups of parasites infecting fowls: external (ectoparasites) and internal parasites (endoparasites). The clinical findings of the examined affected chickens showed that symptoms vary from healthy to subclinical symptoms.
