In order to investigate the effect of high power square-wave pulsed electric field (HPEF) on parasite eggs, Ascaris suum eggs are selected as an example. By changing the voltage, frequency, acting time of the pulse, electrode shape, and living environment of Ascaris suum eggs, this paper discusses the relationship between parameters of HPEF and the effect of destroying Ascaris suum eggs. Then the direct smear for microscopic examination is adopted for counting the death rate of Ascaris suum eggs. Ascaris eggs are commonly used as a bioindicator to test the success of waste treatment systems. The ability to inactivate this organism's eggs indicates probable destruction of a variety of pathogens. The intent of these experiments was to determine operational parameters for a conical-augur device to treat human solid waste in a time-efficient manner (seconds), without exogenous chemicals (e.g. lime, an alkalizing agent) or an external heat source. Literature reviews and independent viscometry experiments established a target temperature range and residence time within the device. The abilit

Abstract The nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) molecules of two nematodes, Caenorhabditis elegans [13,794 nucleotide pairs (ntp)], and Ascaris suum (14,284 ntp) are presented and compared. Each molecule contains the genes for two ribosomal RNAs (s-rRNA and l-rRNA), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs) and 12 proteins, all of which are transcribed in the same direction. The protein genes are the same as 12 of the 13 protein genes found in other metazoan mtDNAs: Cyt b, cytochrome b; COI-III, cytochrome c oxidase subunits I-III; ATPase6, Fo ATPase subunit 6; ND1-6 and 4L, NADH dehydrogena

Fertilization requires sperm migration toward oocytes and subsequent fusion. Sperm chemotaxis, a process in which motile sperm are attracted by factors released from oocytes or associated structures, plays a key role in sperm migration to oocytes. Here, we studied sperm chemotaxis in the nematode Ascaris suum. Our data show that uterus-derived factor (UDF), the protein fraction of uterine extracts, can attract spermatozoa. UDF is heat resistant, but its activity is attenuated by certain proteinases. UDF binds to the surface of spermatozoa but not spermatids, and this process is mediated by mem

ABSTRACTThe isoenzymatic pattern of glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) has been described for Ascaris suum, a parasite of Sus scrofa domestica. Only one band of activity has been revealed, suggesting a monomorphic condition for this enzyme. Also, the structure of GDH has been assayed by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS–PAGE) and silver staining. Only one subunit was present with a molecular weight of about 55 000. A hexameric structure for GDH of A. suum is suggested.
