Abstract:

Abstract: Many medieval Irish saints’ lives contain accounts of ascension that strongly evoke Old-Testament ascensions and the New-Testament Ascension of Christ. This paper argues that the Irish hagiographers had a formulaic ascension-narrative in mind which involved predictable elements. The word ascensio is often avoided, probably to sidestep theological issues. The revision by Manus O’Donnell of Adomnán’s late seventh-century life of Colmcille suggests that use of Ascension motif in saints ’lives was still common in the sixteenth century.

The azimuth of a meridian circle may be determined using stars within 1°–2° of the pole combining observations in upper and lower culmination of stars which have well known right ascensions. The right ascensions are determined photographically using only declinations in the reduction, thus making the azimuth determination independent of the right ascension system. Ibn al-Shāṭir’s (1306–1375/1376 AD) star table in his Jadīd zīj, comprising of the equatorial coordinates and magnitudes of 89 stars, is edited and analyzed in this paper on the basis of the extant manuscripts going back to the late 14th and early 15th centuries. It established a new tradition of arranging the celestial coordinates in the star tables in Egypt and Syria after him. The construction of the Fifth Fundamental Catalogue (FK5) is shortly described with emphasis on the system of the Basic FK5 and on the completion of the FK5 Extension. New observations have revealed systematic errors mainly in the declination system of the FK5 and in the right ascensions south of −50°. Based on the data from the Westerbork Northern Sky Survey performed at a frequency of 325 MHz in the range of right ascensions 0h ≤ α < 2h and declinations 29o < δ < 78o and using multifrequency Planck maps, we selected candidate objects with the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. The list of the most probable candidates includes 381 sources. It is shown that the search for such objects can be accelerated by using a priori data on the negative level of fluctuations in the CMB map with remote low multipoles in the direction to radio sources.

The fern genus Dryopteris (Dryopteridaceae) in the isolated Atlantic Ocean islands, Ascension and St Helena isreviewed. Three species are known from these islands. Dryopteris ascensionis is endemic to and the only Dryopterisspecies known from Ascension Island. This species now appears to be extinct since has not been recorded since 1975,and was not found during repeated searches in the 1990s. Two Dryopteris species, D. cognata and D. napoleonis, areendemic to St. Helena and are rare on that island. Dryopteris napoleonis is lectotypified.

An examination of Pseudoscorpiones de Geer, 1778 material, new and old, from Ascension Island – one of the world’s most remote islands – revealed six endemic species. Four are previously known from the island: Apocheiridium cavicola Mahnert, 1993, Garypus titanius Beier, 1961, Stenowithius duffeyi Beier, 1961, and Withius ascensionis (Beier, 1961), we provide new faunistic records of all these species.
