Abstract:
This volume shows the erudition of the author's contribution to rewriting the master-narrative of hasidic history. We now know that eighteenth-century Hasidism evolved in a context of intense spirituality. It developed through a process of differentiation from traditional ascetic-mystical hasidism. Its elite leaders only became conscious of a distinctive group identity after the Ba'al Shem Tov's death, and they subsequently spent the period from the late-eighteenth to the early-nineteenth century experimenting with various forms of doctrine, literature, organization, leadership, and transfer o

Abstract:
Gregory’s biblical exegesis attracts interest chiefly for the allegorical method demonstrated in his Life of Moses and Homilies on the Song of Songs. While many have noted Gregory’s indebtedness to Origen, equally telling are the connections between Gregory’s late exegesis and the dogmatic works of the middle period of his career, above all the Contra Eunomium and Antirrheticus adversus Apollinariam, as well as his early works on the Trinity. This chapter gives an account of Gregory’s overall approach to Christological predication and divine impassibility and the metaphysical and ascetical com

Jeremy Taylor cited Arnauld’s famous work on frequent communion in his Unum Necessarium of 1655, and made use of the French writer’s arguments in a later work, The Worthy Communicant. This chapter provides parallel discussions of the two theologians’ doctrines of repentance, which both were concerned to enlarge in scope in the context of what they considered the deficiencies in contemporary Protestant and Catholic approaches. The chapter concludes with a textual comparison between their arguments regarding the primitive practice of penance, which suggests that Taylor may have drawn directly on
