This thesis analyzes Jerome's Correspondence as a social practice, in its literary form and in its ideological content. Jerome's letters expose and promote the ideal of ascetic life which is based on the experimentation of various types of suffering. The monk develops a plurality of discourses to meet the needs of the plurality of his readership and the different social and cultural contexts that he faces. The Greek and Stoic philosophical thoughts conceived ascetic practices as entrainments to virtue. Jerome has established parallels between philosophical and Christian ascetic disciplines and techniques. The monk’s asceticism based on these different traditions creates a new model of ascetic life. The form and the intensity of the asceticism promoted by Jerome change between his youth, his eremitical failure at Chalcis and his encounter with the circle of the Aventine. The monk progressively promotes an asceticism presented as moderate. He forges a new ethnotype of the ascetic from the ethnotype of the Roman noble. The monk turns his back on the gospel message and spreads an asceticism restricted to the nobles : his propaganda campaign produces a new type of spiritual prestige that transcends social prestige. The importance of the figure of the ascetic in Jerome’s discourse raises the question of its social function. The great ascetics are characterized by their contempt for secular activities and by their patience to face austerities and sufferings. They are essential to the society of the fourth century to arouse and preserve the disgust of easy pleasures among the faithful

The platonic philosophy and the new patristic philosophy, allowed us to explore image and likeness fields in a new way, improving our understanding of the topic, through all the wealth that a life of consciousness, other then the modern human being's, can afford. The phenomenological analysis allowed us to notice, in the image structure itself, the presence of a strength which leads it toward likeness. We talk about a mimèsis active et du dedans which is in action equally in the platonic Form and patristic virtues. Beyond the Form's mimesis, the phantastique mimesis, which comes from the image dark area, increases: the phantasia. This research follows these two kinds of mimesis involvements regarding the image's ontological, gnoseological and esthetical sides
Medina, Diego. "Trabajos del vicio, afanes del amor vicioso par Simón de Castelblanco : édition critique et étude." Thesis, Rennes 2, 2021. http://www.theses.fr/2021REN20048.
This work proposes the first critical edition, with annotations and introductory study, of Trabajos del vicio, afanes del amor vicioso (Madrid, 1680), written, as well demonstrated, by the Augustinian friar and preacher Simon de Castelblanco. Following ecdotic procedures - in connection with two complementary disciplines such as material bibliography and textual criticism - it has been possible to clarify the history of the text and prove its true author. The phase of the recensio reveals the existence of an edition of 1680, and an issue of 1684, which presents two states of edition. The issue is the product of the commercial strategy orchestrated by the printer-publisher Lorenzo García and the bookseller Juan Fernández with the intention of overcoming the lucrative failure that the commercialization of the novel must have entailed. The critical text, accompanied by an extensive annotation apparatus, has been rigorously fixed from the digitized copy of the BDH (R-8617), after verifying the equality of the rest of the copies. Given the scarcity of philological studies on the author and the novel, the preliminary study has used different documentary sources such as bio-bibliographic sourcebooks and compendia on Augustinian friars, dealing in depth with aspects related to the biography and work of Simon de Castelblanco. Likewise, through the perspective of the reception studies and the comparative analysis with other contemporary novels, Trabajos del vicio is framed within the corpus of the ―long novelǁ of the last quarter of the 17th century, characterized by an exemplary literature of strong ascetic morality
Charcharé, Hélène. "Proust et Platon. Convergences linguistiques, érotiques et philosophiques." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017USPCA017/document.
The thesis entitled Proust and Plato is mainly based on the affinities between the two great figures of universal scope. Although there is a significant time gap between them, we have tried to develop an approximation in three distinct parts. The first part is devoted to etymology and philosophy of language, namely the effort of Proust and Plato to establish the correctness of the name against the thing it represents. At first, we put the language at the epicenter of our analysis, in an effort to locate the various tendencies, –cratylism, hermogenism, naturalism, conventionalism –, in a critical dialogue: the Cratylus. Secondly, it is etymology that revives the linguistic effervescence, representing a pivotal topic in both Proust and Plato: it questions the use of words and names, as well as their relevance with the thing they represent. The other great linguistic theory proposed is hermogenism, named after the theory of Hermogenes in the Cratylus, who argues that the names have been invented on the basis of an agreement between the people who use them. Secondly, it is love in all its manifestations that takes over: the focus is on the most delightful work of Plato, the Banquet. We will start by highlighting the role of the banquet as an institution in antiquity. These are without a doubt the mostappropriate surroundings to talk about pederasty, the androgyne, but also ἀγάπη. Nevertheless, the Banquet also has its Aristophanian side: by assigning to the great comedy writer the articulation of his most famous myth, Plato perhaps wanted to highlight the more satirical side of eros. However, this idyllic myth also triggers the review of many themes concerning homosexuality in ancient Greece. The Proustian part on love is dedicated initially to the importance of the aristocratic banquet, place of the social, romantic and artistic initiation of the Narrator. It is furthermore based on the different manifestations of ἒρως and ἀγάπη in the novel:friendship, homosexuality, artistic procreation. The last stage of the second part is dedicated to death and the beyond in Greek Antiquity and the three tales of nekyia in the Platonic corpus. We will underline the existence of it as a leitmotiv in the Proustian novel as well. The final section has a rather disconcerting title: Δεύτερος πλοῦς, a second navigation. Here, we would like to emphasize the effort of Plato and Proust to reach the most unfathomable truths by taking iconoclastic paths: for Plato, it would be reminiscence, Ideal aesthetics and myth, while the Proustian segment focuses on time and memory, aesthetics and the narrative techniques of the novel. We hope that at the end of this study the contiguous reflections highlighted in the works of Plato and Proust will have turned into dazzling sparkles
Farag, George. "Les Lettres attribuées à Antoine dans la deuxième collection arabe (Lettres 8 à 20) : sont-elles d'Antoine ou d'Ammonas? : étude comparée des différentes versions et interprétation théologique." Thesis, Strasbourg, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012STRAK006.
The thesis comprises 417 pages, regarding the collection of the 20 Letters attributed to St. Anthony the Great in the Coptic-Arabic tradition, and performs a comparative analysis between the second group of Letters in this collection (8-20) with the parallel Letters of Ammonas in the other versions (Syriac, Greek, Georgian). The thesis consists of 3 parts. The first addresses the Egyptian cultural of the primitive monasticism, the education of Antony and his heritage in the Coptic-Arabic Tradition; The second addresses the text history and works on determining the original text, authenticity, the author of every Letter, the identity of Ammonas as bishop of Oxyrhynchus and Paphnutius, the quotations taken by Shenoute and Besa and Stephen of Thebes discourse, The third part is dedicated to the analysis of the 13 Letters, and a comparison of the doctrine of Antony and Ammonas, such as the Origenism and gnosis of Antony compared to the non-philosophical narrative of Ammonas
Pavie, Xavier. "La réception des exercices spirituels antiques dans la philosophie contemporaine." Paris 10, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA100062.
The goal of this thesis is to understand in what way contemporary philosophy apprehends spiritual exercises as they were conceived, shared and practiced by ancient philosophers. Aimed at self-improvement and self-transformation, spiritual exercises were intended to enable one to live a philosophical life. As such they represented an essential element in the main concerns of antique schools. Thus philosophers elaborated doctrines and theories, while maintaining a real and daily practice of these views. Indeed, the axis theoria/praxis is one the most important of spiritual exercises and is also a connecting thread in this thesis leading to a better understanding of the notion of “spiritual exercise” itself. Pierre Hadot is the one who discovered traces of spiritual exercises - their construction and implementation in ancient philosophy. However, philosophy goes far beyond the antique philosophers, to our contemporary era. As a result, for more than 2,500 years spiritual exercises have been questioned, reorganized by their environment, notably the religious and Christian environment. Consequently, the aim here is to determine the very essence of the antique spiritual exercises in the evolution of philosophy in a general sense, and more particularly in contemporary philosophy
Eluther, Ena. "L'africanité dans la littérature caribéenne." Thesis, Le Mans, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013LEMA3001.
Can the africanity of caribbean cultures come down to distant survivals, or constitute the foundation of these cultures ? Literature, as a mirror of peoples, as a painting of cultures, as art, allows to perceive the cultural and literary continuity between the african continent and its caribbean diaspora. The comparison of english-speaking and french-speaking novels from the Caribbean and from West Africa and Central Africa shows common cultural features and literary topoi from one area to the other : colonial trauma, protection and adaptation of ancestral legacy, common spiritual values, linguistic problematics, paintings of resistance struggles in which the writer himself is in the frontline. This comparative study, which sometimes draws from caribbean and african oral literature, as from caribbean spanish-speaking literature, suggests that one should view the afro-caribbean cultural expressions as an extension of african cultural expressions, offering in this way a large panorama of the cultural and literary black world. From 1921 to the early years 2000, this analysis takes into account the changes of african and caribbean literatures and the societies they represent. Have the changes definitively broken the african civilizational unity, the cultural links between Africa and the Americas ? On the contrary, the reading of the novels of the corpus shows an homogeneous and coherent picture of cultural and literary expressions of Africa and its caribbean diaspora, so doing putting Africa back into the center of caribbean culture
Murcia, Thierry. "Jésus dans la littérature talmudique." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012AIXM3076.
This study presents a survey and a systematic analysis of the passages of Talmudic literature (Mishna – Tosefta – Palestinian Talmud – Babylonian Talmud – Midrashim), relative to Jesus or are supposed to be. The documents are examined, criticized and confronted to other sources of Jewish or Christian origin (Hellenistic Jewish literature, Jewish Apocrypha, rabbinic sources, Targumim, Toledot Yeshu – New Testament, Apostolic Fathers, Church Fathers). The investigation tries to answer to several questions: - What did the rabbis exactly know about Jesus? - Has their information any historical value? - Has their perception undergone some evolution? - Did the rabbis of the Talmud have access to the Gospels as a written source? The conclusion of this thesis is that all these documents are rooted in their Sitz im leben. They obviously attest – contra Peter Schäfer (Jesus in the Talmud, 2007) – that the rabbis had no direct acquaintance with the Gospels as written documents. This study also shows, concerning the Babylonian Talmud, that all the passages relative to Jesus belong to the last editorial layer of this corpus (VIIe-VIIIe century)
Przybylska, Nelli. "L' ascèse de la parole dans les écrits de Simone Weil." Paris 7, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009PA070002.
The subject accentuates the different philosopher and religious points of view. What's the aim of ascetic practice ? Which mode of existence is in relation with the way of wisdom and perfection? What's the world contribution to the wisdom? What's an importance and what's a sense of ascetic's techniques in the world in the era of globalization? Does-it exist the language and the mode of existence which could reply to requirement of our civilization ? In this work l'm attached to a contemporary research like those of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Nishida Kitarô, Gavin Flood Geoffrey Harphman. But l've chosen for example of my dissertation the Notebooks of a French writer and philosopher - Simone Weil. This author, completely engaged into the politic actuality 20th century, she introduces no only into the problems of actual world, but she removes ; philosopher thought into the Greek Civilization. This work is founded on Simone Weil's Notebook and on the thought of Fathers of the Desert. The main problems include the linguistics and ascetic terms like : apatheia - the state of happiness , parrhêsia – the boldness speech, the exercises attention, paradox - the way of wise expression
