The plant hormone ABA (abscisic acid) regulates plant responses to abiotic stresses by regulating the expression of ABA response genes. However, the functions of a large portion of ABA response genes have remained unclear. We report in this study the identification of ASDs (ABA-inducible signal peptide-containing DUF538 proteins), a subgroup of DUF538 proteins with a signal peptide, as the regulators of plant responses to ABA in Arabidopsis. ASDs are encoded by four closely related DUF538 genes, with ASD1/ASD2 and ASD3/ASD4 being two pairs of duplicated tandemly repeated genes. The quantitativ

Spinal fusion is a common and effective option for patients with symptomatic degenerative disc disorders. However, concerns have raised over the probability of adjacent segment degeneration (ASDe) and adjacent segment disease (ASDi) following spinal instrumentation. Current study sought to document evidence on the incidence of ASDe and ASDi after lumbar fusion surgery and the risk factors precipitating adjacent pathologies. Given the benefits of spinal fusion surgery, it remains unclear whether adjacent pathologies are attributed to the natural degeneration or the adjacent fusion.

Abstract Acoustic Sand Detectors (ASDs) have been widely used on topsides and subsea flowlines to measure sand production for the last 25 years. Essentially, ASDs are filtered microphones, strapped onto a bend or tee, that detect ultrasonic noise generated by impacting sand. ASDs are typically used either to detect the presence of sand or to quantify the sand rate. In the former case the well will typically be choked back when sand is present. This approach has the disadvantage that production may be curtailed even when sand production is too low to be problematic. Alternatively, the ASD could
