During our lifetime, our bones constantly go through remodelling to maintain the skeletal system. This is done by osteoblasts that deposit new bone tissue, osteoclasts that remove the bone matrix and mechanosensing osteocytes. Wear particles and ions from cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo)-based implants have been shown to cause adverse immune responses, including periprosthetic osteolysis leading to aseptic loosening, the main cause of implant failure.
