Abstract:
In exploring the management accouting practices of companies in Malaysia, two categories of companies were chosen: Malaysian‐owned and Multinational corporations (MNCs). The majority of the companies selected were either manufacturing‐based or service‐based. To asess the level of management accounting applications in these organizations, Akira’s “Four‐Phase” model was adopted. While a “drifting phase” connotes an extremely low level of application, the “integrated phase” on the other hand deliberately uses the latest management accounting approaches for strategic purposes. Management accounting techniques surveyed include the applications of traditional methods such as Standard Costing, Budgeting and Cost‐Volume‐Profit (CVP) and other integrated approaches such as Just‐in‐Time (JIT), Activity‐Based‐Costing (ABC), Benchmarking and Target Costing.

Abstract:
Abstract. This paper deals with the description and assessment of uncertainties in gridded land use data derived from Remote Sensing observations, in the context of hydrological studies. Land use is a categorical regionalised variable returning the main socio-economic role each location has, where the role is inferred from the pattern of occupation of land. There are two main uncertainties surrounding land use data, positional and categorical. This paper focuses on the second one, as the first one has in general less serious implications and is easier to tackle. The conventional method used to asess categorical uncertainty, the confusion matrix, is criticised in depth, the main critique being its inability to inform on a basic requirement to propagate uncertainty through distributed hydrological models, namely the spatial distribution of errors. Some existing alternative methods are reported, and finally the need for metadata is stressed as a more reliable means to assess the quality, and hence the uncertainty, of these data.

Abstract:
The capability level assesment for governance of the Election Organizer Ethics Court Information System [SIPEPP] is necessary to ensure strategic planning allignment, value delivery, risk management, resources management and performance measurement. SIPEPP implementation has special problems in optimizing human resources and weak supervision management, so it is important to asess capability levels to provide solutions to these problems. The purpose of this paper is to assess the current and expected capability level conditions, gap analysis and recommendations for SIPEPP good governance. This research method uses the Process Assessment Model (PAM) from Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology (COBIT 5) which consists of stages of initiation, planning the assessment, briefing, data collection, data validation, process attribute level, and result and recommendation. The results of this study indicate the level of optimization of resources and performance monitoring processes are level 2 (Managed Process) which means that the process has been recorded, measured and in accordance with the objectives. The process of managing human resources, assets and operations are at level 1 (Performed Process), meaning that both processes have been applied to SIPEPP governance. Recommendations related human resources are the selection of appropriate human resources by involving management, while related assets require a priority list of implementation systems, and related supervision requires detailed monitoring schedules. This study result can be taken into consideration for improving good governance of SIPEPP implementation.

Abstract:
Thesis: M. Eng. in Logistics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Supply Chain Management Program, 2016.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 88-92).<br>The oil and gas industry is very volatile; it is characterized by unpredictable cycles of sharp rises and plunges in oil prices. This cyclical nature presents a huge challenge for companies that are operating in the industry. Companies have to be able to ramp up their production quickly so that they have enough capacity to meet increasing demand when oil prices go up and be able to survive when oil prices go down. In this context, companies have to make sure that their suppliers are flexible to changing demand. Assessing supplier flexibility is one of the major challenges facing our thesis sponsor company, which is one of the largest oil field services companies in the world. Our project has two primary goals. First we would like to develop a sound understanding of common factors that characterizes flexibility of suppliers in oil and gas industry. Second, we would like to develop the first version of a self administered audit able instrument to assess the flexibility of suppliers. We developed a comprehensive list of factors influencing flexibility of suppliers through systematic literature review and interview research methodology. We then designed a survey to validate the flexibility factors using statistical measures. Finally, we developed the first version self assessment instrument using Microsoft Excel. The instrument would help our thesis sponsor company to assess the flexibility of their supply base. The findings of our research would be useful to companies operating in seasonal and cyclical industries. The research might help companies develop insights regarding flexibility of their suppliers to adapt to changing market demands, and develop strategies to balance supply and demand at minimum cost.<br>by Peng Bi and Remya Pushpangatha Kurup.<br>M. Hall, Emma Louise. "Quantitative methods to assess cerebral haemodynamics." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2012. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/12673/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis methods for the assessment of cerebral haemodynamics using 7 T Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are described. The measurement of haemodynamic parameters, such as cerebral blood flow (CBF), is an important clinical tool. Arterial Spin Labelling (ASL) is a non-invasive technique for CBF measurement using MRI. ASL methodology for ultra high field (7 T) MRI was developed, including investigation of the optimal readout strategy. Look-Locker 3D-EPI is demonstrated to give large volume coverage improving on previous studies. Applications of methods developed to monitor functional activity, through flow or arterial blood volume, in healthy volunteers and in patients with low grade gliomas using Look-Locker ASL are described. The effect of an increased level of carbon dioxide in the blood (hypercapnia) was studied using ASL and functional MRI; hypercapnia is a potent vasodilator and has a large impact on haemodynamics. These measures were used to estimate the increase in oxygen metabolism associated with a simple motor task. To study the physiology behind the hypercapnic response, magnetoencephalography was used to measure the impact of hypercapnia on neuronal activity. It was shown that hypercapnia induces widespread desynchronisation in a wide frequency range, up to ~ 50 Hz, with peaks in the sensory-motor areas. This suggests that hypercapnia is not iso-metabolic, which is an assumption of calibrated BOLD. A Look-Locker gradient echo sequence is described for the quantitative monitoring of a gadolinium contrast agent uptake through the change in longitudinal relaxation rate. This sequence was used to measure cerebral blood volume in Multiple Sclerosis patients. Further development of the sequence yielded a high resolution anatomical scan with reduced artefacts due to field inhomogeneities associated with ultra high field imaging. This allows whole head images acquired at sub-millimetre resolution in a short scan time, for application in patient studies.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited<br>Turn-based strategy games and simulations are vital tools for military education, training, and readiness. In an era of increasingly constrained resources and expanding demand for training solutions, the need for validated, effective solutions will increase. Appropriate performance feedback is an important component of any training solution. Current methods for designing and testing the performance feedback provided in turn-based simulation are limited to well-structured problems and do not adequately address ill-structured problems that better replicate problems facing military leaders in todays complex operating environment. This thesis develops and explores new methods for assessing the feedback mechanisms of turn-based strategy games. Using UrbanSim, a game for training strategic approaches to COIN operations as an exemplar, this thesis developed and explored two unique methods for evaluating the reward structure of the UrbanSim scenarios. The first method evaluates different student strategies using a batch-run method. The second method uses a reinforcement-learning algorithm to explore the decision space. These scenario evaluation methodologies are shown to be able to provide insights about a games performance feedback mechanism that was not previously available. These methodologies can be used for formative evaluation during game scenario development. Additionally, these evaluation methodologies are generalizable to other training and education games that focus on ill-structured problems and decision-making at discrete intervals.

Oleson, Mark D. "Using Maslow's Needs Model to Assess Individuals' Attitudes Toward Money." DigitalCommons@USU, 1999. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/2645.

Full text
Abstract:
Few things occupy as central a place in our lives as money. Although the study of money has a long history in the behavioral sciences, others have only recently begun examining this important topic. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between basic human need levels and money attitudes in a university-age cohort utilizing a theory of hierarchical needs. Needs theory, introduced by Abraham Maslow, suggests that as we interact with the environment we accumulate specific needs that motivate us to respond to life experiences. Three hundred thirty-eight college students attending Utah State University satellite campuses responded to a measure designed to examine an individual's attitudes toward money and achievement of needs (Maslow). Pilot study results validated the selection of modified versions of both Lim and Teo's Attitudes Toward Money Scale and Lester's Need Satisfaction Inventory as reliable instruments in assessing money attitudes and need achievement. Results confirmed relationships between money attitudes and human needs. Specifically, all of Maslow's needs appear to be strongly related to the money attitudes of evaluation and anxiety. In addition, men's and women's needs are highly correlated with obsession, budget, anxiety, and particularly evaluation. Associations of money attitudes with demographic variables such as gender, age, and income were also supported. For example, gender was statistically related to money attitudes of obsession, power, budget, and achievement. Age shared a strong relationship with obsession, budget, anxiety, and retention. Finally, power and evaluation were the money attitudes explaining the bulk of the variance in income. The findings of the study support the literature and point to the importance of understanding a client's money attitudes and level of need satisfaction. particularly from a counseling standpoint. Implications of the results and possible areas for future research are discussed.

Price, Roz. Metrics and Indicators to Assess Adaptation. Institute of Development Studies, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2022.050.

Full text
Abstract:
The field of climate change adaptation metrics is complex and fast-changing. Given the highly contextual nature of adaptation and the array of applied definitions of adaptation and “success”, there is no single global set of adaptation metrics and indicators or definition of adaptation success. There is a burgeoning literature on the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA), how to measure it and adaptation metrics. However, the landscape is scattered and the subject is very complex. Climate impacts and the effects of adaptation measures themselves spill across national borders, although adaptation is still treated as a largely domestic issue despite the global rhetoric of the GGA. This makes an aggregate global goal extremely technically challenging and tracing the plethora of existing indicators and metrics difficult. Furthermore, there is relatively few specific literature directly on the topic of global measurement of adaptation. This rapid review provides information on some of the metrics and measurement approaches in use across national and sub-national government levels. It gives a brief discussion of the issues around measuring the GGA, flags some key resources in this area and also touches on some initiatives and guidance aimed at helping users to select metrics. This is not a systematic review and given the time limitations and the number of adaptation metrics approaches in use, it is only able to provide a small snapshot of current research.

Raju, Nivedita. Parameters to Assess Escalation Risks in Space. Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, 2024. https://doi.org/10.55163/edtc6801.

Full text
Abstract:
Space-enabled services are critical for various civilian and military purposes. Current military uses of space—for example, in the Russia-Ukraine War—indicate several avenues for unpredictability and ambiguity, which can increase potential for escalation, both in space and on earth. Yet, there is no common understanding of escalation risks in the international community. Four parameters to assess escalation risks in the space domain are identified: the target, the capability used, the effect and the consequences. These parameters can help establish a standardized approach to assess whether an attack is escalatory. Based on current trends that undermine predictability and transparency in space activities, these parameters inform recommendations to minimize escalation risks. These include proposals to limit attacks on high-value strategically significant space systems; undertake exchanges on critical infrastructure; characterize acts that are especially escalatory; enhance resilience of space-based services for civilians; and build a typology that identifies potential harms. Recommendations also demand further action from states to implement and enforce international law governing space activities and to engage with commercial actors to raise awareness and clearly establish their accountability.

Larbi, Jelian. Form to Assess Result Reproducibility of Manuscripts. American Society of Civil Engineers, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.1061/reprod.000001.

Full text
Abstract:
Use this worksheet to assess the: (a) availability of manuscript data, models, code, directions, and other digital artifacts; and (b) reproducibility of figures, tables, and other results presented in the manuscript. Should you answer “no” or “not sure” to any question, skip to Section IV and then answer the final questions to provide the authors constructive feedback to improve their repository and materials. The Journal asks that AERs and reproducibility reviewers take no more than four hours to assess the reproducibility of a manuscript’s results. Should an assessment take longer, skip to Section IV and provide the authors feedback on the steps that took a long time and how the authors can better organize their repository and materials to reduce the time to assess result reproducibility.
