Enhanced natural radioactivity due human activities can be harmful to the environment and human health depending on the amount of exposure. A sensitive gamma spectrometry system consisting of 7.6cm x 7.6cm Nal(Tl) scintillation detector coupled with Canberra series 10 plus multichannel analyzer was used to determine the radioactivity concentration of natural radionuclides 232Th, 238U, and 40K in soil samples collected from the five communities around Ashaka Cement Company. The results obtained showed that the radionuclides are present in the soil samples in varying concentrations ranging from

The study examined the effect of water- treatment chemicals on the properties of concrete; using two different brands of Ordinary Portland cement. The compressive strength of the concrete as the important property is taken as the index of its quality and the physical properties such as abrasion was checked. Concrete cubes were cast with Dangote and Ashaka Portland cement, cured in the solution of water-treatment chemicals (Aluminium sulphate and Calcium hypo-chloride) and crushed to obtain their compressive strengths. The results obtained were compared with the results of the compressive stren

Privatization as a reform policy package has been adopted by both developed and developing countries’ economies. Nigeria as a developing country has large public enterprises which has about 57 percent of fixed capital investment and about 66 percent of formal sector employment by 1997. These enterprises performed below expectation due to multiple problems. Technical Committee on Privatization and Commercialization (TCPC) was set up to privatize the enterprises and the privatization have since commenced. Environmental pollution, particularly involving heavy metals (HMs) and pathogenic bacteria, is a global issue, with the cement industry contributing significantly. This study investigated heavy metal concentrations in soil and water samples from the Ashaka cement dump site in Gombe State, Nigeria, and isolated, identified, and characterized heavy metal-tolerant bacteria from these samples. Using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry after nitric acid digestion, the study found significant heavy metal concentrations exceeding recommended limits, indicating potential environmental pollution. This study aimed to estimate some major and trace elements in human hair samples obtained from humans living in the vicinity of Ashaka Cement Factory, Gombe State to identify the proportion of some major and trace elements in human hair samples. The samples collected from humans were kept in air-tight polyethene bags immediately. Then, they were washed with detergent to remove external dust and socked in distilled water for 10 minutes and transferred it into Acetone to remove stubborn dirt. The samples were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) after several processes of determin

Tests are carried out to determine the fluidity of Ashaka Portland cement paste and its compatibility with sawdust ash (SDA) as powder material for self-compacting cement (SCC) mixtures. Results of the investigation showed that saturation was achieved at w/c ratios of 0.4 and 0.42, at dosages of naphthalene sulfonate superplasticizers of 3.5% and 2%, respectively. The optimum replacement level for the SCC mixture was 10 wt.% of cement by SDA and 2% of the superplasticizer dosage. In this work, four naturally occurring (two kaolinite-rich and two smectite-rich) clay samples were collected from different areas around the Ashaka cement production plant, located in Gombe State, Nigeria and calcined in a laboratory. The mineralogical characterization of the clays was carried out by XRD. The hydration kinetics of the calcined clay–cement systems were monitored by isothermal calorimetry. Workability was determined using the flow table method. The reactivity of the calcined clays was determined from the solubility of Si and Al ions and the strength activity index. All calcined
