The importance of Asia to New Zealand has become increasingly apparent. The New Zealand government has recognised the prominence and potential of the region. However, it is arguable whether the media have acknowledged its importance. This study attempts to detemrine how the New Zealand media has responded. The research is based on two hypotheses amended from their American origins to suit a New Zealand context. This thesis, Reporting East Asia: Foreign Relations and News Bias, seeks to argue for the importance of understanding foreign relations in the study of 'bias' in international news.
