Pear is a typical fruit of temperate zones with high nutritive values and organoleptic properties, but when this fresh fruit being harvested, it will undergo chemical changes which can cause spoilage and product deterioration. Freezing could be as a preservative method to maintain quality attributes (colour, texture) of fresh produce that change over time. The purpose of this study is to determine ascorbic acid content and antioxidant activity of frozen fruit treated with osmotic solution. Pears were pre-treated with blanching, osmotic and both blanching and osmotic solution prior to freezing.

Venturia nashicola is a fungal pathogen that causes Asian pear scab disease. This pathogen is of particular importance in Northeast Asian countries, where Asian pears are grown industrially. High-quality genome data are therefore required for in-depth comparative genome analysis of different isolates of V. nashicola and V. pyrina, a closely related species, which only infects European pear plants. As a culturally distinctive region, Asia was chosen as the sample for this study. This empirical study investigated what the major trends of democratisation were in Asia between 1981 and 2005: why some countries became democratic while other countries failed to follow suit during that period. The main research hypothesis was: “That is it was mainly economic development that drove democratisation in Asia between 1981 and 2005”. Although some studies have studied the impact of economic development on democratisation in Asia, their findings have been inconclusive and focuses sometimes different.

Abstract:
This presentation focuses on access to water and sanitation related to the Millennium Development Goals in Asia. In most Asian countries 60 per cent or more of the population have access to water. The author explores a series of topics that include which is the relationship between income and access to water and to sanitation, which are the strategic imperatives, forecasts on progress with target 10 for countries in the Asian region, and financing issues including a review of aid and loans in Asia between 1990 and 2002. Finally, regional co-operation opportunities are identified. This presenta

Abstract:
Despite great achievements in improving school enrolment and completion levels in South Asia, a high proportion of learners continue to live in learning poverty, with approximately 50 per cent of learners unable to read or understand a simple text by age ten (UNICEF, 2021). Learning levels were severely impacted by large scale school closures as a result of Covid-19, with approximately 434 million learners impacted in the region (UNICEF, 2021). Improving foundational learning outcomes, particularly for the most marginalised, is a key policy priority for many South Asian countries. This report

Abstract:
This APO report pinpoints the declining agricultural productivity situation in APO economies since 2019 and explores how key measures could accelerate progress achieving food security and mitigating undernourishment by improving calorie availability per person. Key challenges include slowed agricultural productivity, climate change, land degradation, insufficient R&D investment, water scarcity, and inefficiencies in markets. The report examines measures such as policy interventions and investments in R&D, irrigation, and water use efficiency to enhance productivity, food security, and

Abstract:
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and lockdown measures taken to control its spread brought economies to a halt, turning the public health crisis into an economic one. Though government responses, such as labor and social welfare protection programs, were similar to recent economic crises like the Global and Asian Financial Crises, the origin of the current situation being public health rather than financial markets, put the spotlight on the health sector and the need for its strengthening both to manage COVID-19 and ensure sustainable economic recovery. Brown, Dr Brendan, and Dr Rick Llewellyn. Improving Agricultural Policy and Programming through Data-Driven Adoption Prediction. Asian Productivity Organization, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.61145/cwao6767.

Abstract:
This report evaluates the Adoption and Diffusion Outcome Prediction Tool (ADOPT) as a decision support system for agricultural policy across APO member economies. Through validation studies in Bangladesh, India, and Lao PDR, the research demonstrates ADOPT's strength in predicting peak adoption rates while identifying its tendency to overestimate adoption speed in developing contexts. The study introduces the 'Four Ps' framework and concludes that ADOPT, combined with structured analysis methods, provides valuable support for data-driven agricultural policy decisions in Asian contexts.

Agosin, Manuel R. Trade and Growth: Why Asia Grows Faster than Latin America. Inter-American Development Bank, 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0008736.

Abstract:
This paper deals with a topic that has been amply debated in the development literature: the relationship between trade and growth. The paper's hypothesis is that what matters for growth is not merely openness to trade, or, for that matter, export growth per se. The key feature of countries that have surged ahead in recent decades is that fast export growth has been accompanied by export diversification. The paper tests this hypothesis in the framework of an empirical growth model for the period 1980-2003. It finds considerable support for the hypothesis that diversified export growth is one o

Abstract:
World military expenditure increased for the ninth consecutive year in 2023, reaching a total of $2443 billion. The 6.8 per cent increase in 2023 was the steepest year-on-year rise since 2009 and pushed global spending to the highest level SIPRI has ever recorded. The world military burden—defined as military spending as a percentage of global gross domestic product (GDP)—increased to 2.3 per cent in 2023. Average military expenditure as a share of government expenditure rose by 0.4 percentage points to 6.9 per cent in 2023 and world military spending per person was the highest since 1990, at

Imports of major arms by states in Europe increased by 94 per cent between 2014–18 and 2019–23, while the global volume of international arms transfers decreased marginally, by 3.3 per cent. There were overall decreases in arms transfers to all other regions, but states in Asia and Oceania and the Middle East continued to import arms in much larger volumes than those in Europe. Nine of the 10 biggest arms importers in 2019–23, including the top 3 of India, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, were in Asia and Oceania or the Middle East. Ukraine became the fourth biggest arms importer globally after it rece

The volume of international transfers of major arms in 2017–21 was 4.6 per cent lower than in 2012–16, but was 3.9 per cent higher than in 2007–11. The five largest arms exporters in 2017–21 were the United States, Russia, France, China and Germany. The five largest arms importers were India, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Australia and China. Between 2012–16 and 2017–21 there were increases in arms transfers to Europe (19 per cent) and to the Middle East (2.8 per cent), while there were decreases in the transfers to the Americas (–36 per cent), Africa (–34 per cent), and Asia and Oceania (–4.7 per cent
