Full textFrance was present in Indo-China for 1ess than one century starting from 1859 till the end of the Second World War and the beginning of the Indo-China war in 1946. From the very first days of the colonisation, tradesmen, merchants took the lead from soldiers, as the matter of fact, they settled in Indo-China with varying success. They were the key actors of colonial system and were often forgotten by History to the beneficiary of warriors, diplomats, missionaries and ethnographers. This research on the History of the French colonial period has been carried out under the business approach from local or French fragmentary archives, rounded off by testimonies and stories of the last witness. The present thesis relates the dawn and the development of the commerce and the exchange flows established between France and its colony and also with its Eastern Asia neighbouring. It focused on the story of the pioneers who founded the first trading companies as well as their evolution and the relations they had with their environment. In addition, this thesis describes the "success story" of one of the most reputable and admired Trading Company in Indochina: Denis-Frères. Among the various conclusions which spring up, its appears that Indochina's trade balances withy France were always negative, the colony had always financed its needs and its infrastructure development by purchasing manufactured products and equipment from France thanks to its revenues from the sales of rice, coal, rubber to Eastern Asia countries. The above was possible because of the predominant position captured by fifteen large French colonial trading companies in various sectors of the economy

Full textChinese ceramics found on Islamic sites are the only material traces preserved to-day of the well-known trade between china and Islam in the middle age (650-1350). A typological study of these ceramics, paralleled by a critical research on the archaeological data, brings to light the main characteristics of this trade, its historical evolution and its main networks. These networks were exclusively maritime ones, handled until the 11th century by merchants from the Persian Gulf who also controlled the trade in the red sea and east Africa. Later on, the Indian Ocean trade is shared by people from Egypt and Yemen in the red sea, and the Hormuz area in the Gulf

Full textIn 1859, the catch of Saïgon by the French gives in the circles of the trade of France the hope of competing with the British colony of Singapore in Extreme East. Étienne Denis, fully-licensed captain of Bordeaux, sends his sons to Cochinchina to poll the potentialities of this new commercial skyline. Founded in 1862 in Saïgon, the Denis Frères company develops industrial activities, trade, coastal shipping, is interested in the rice and becomes one of the most prosperous business of the Indochinese colony, notably by the development of its commercial network in the Asiatic « Mediterranean Sea ». The consultation of archives of the Denis Frères company, of the family Denis, of the ancient employees of the company, supplemented by the study of the public archives concerning the firm and his leaders in France and in Indochina allows to envisage the strategy of developpement but also the management of a firm in colonial background. This double establishment, between Bordeaux and Extreme East, invites the researcher to play the games of ladders. It asks the question of the adaptation of the firm the peculiarities of the Asiatic market, traditionally dominated by the Chineses, and of his role in the emphasizing of the colony. Indeed, the structure of the firm reflects the Indochinese colonial society and the evolution of its mentalities. In France, the Denis Frères company registers in a network of defence of colonial interests and allows to appreciate the influence of ultramarine trade

Full textThe Lyon silk merchants, the Soyeux, have always sought to supply their Fabrique with various types of raw silk, in order to create the rich fabrics that contributed to the prestige of their city. During the XIXth century, Lyon became the most important, world-wide producer of luxury silks, thus playing a primary role in the national. These traders, for centuries, had travelled the silk routes tot the Far East. This thesis is the history of the special ties that the Soyeux and their networks established with China and Indochina. The study starts in 1843, when France established diplomatic relations with imperial China and envisaged installing themselves in Indochina. It ends in 1906 just as regional interests dilute into the national economy and the silk industry no longer occupies a primordial place in the local industry. This study traces how, from the Monarchy of July to the Second Empire, a group of Liberals, influenced by the philosophy of Saint-Simon, had, in the context of their competition with the British, established their own silk route. A strategy that was taken up and adapted by their heirs: conservative Republicans, with political leanings towards the Centre Gauche. They associated themselves with the Moderate Republicans, the Ferryists and the Gambettists to push France to implant itself in the Tonkin and to use it as a springboard towards Yunnan and Sichuan. The Soyeux would develop a unique colonial doctrine and an active economic strategy. This breaks with the usual image of an overcautious French business community in the Asian markets and also with the idea that the Indochina conquest was the result of a series of rash decisions. During more than a half-century, in the China Sea, the Soyeux of Lyon would write one of the least known pages of economical and social history within the larger context of French diplomatic and colonial history
Do, Thi Thanh Nga. "La crise financière asiatique et le commerce international : quel est le lien ?" Bordeaux 4, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009BOR40067.
Full textThe Asian financial crisis that occured on July, 2nd in 1997 is different from other crises because of its intensity and span. Its effects were felt not only in Asia, but also in other regions, such as Latin America and Russia. We may sometimes think that financial crises only occur in emerging markets, but the Asian crisis reached Japan whose gross domestic product is twice of the one all the other countries in crisis, and also Hong Kong with a highly developed financial matket. In this paper, the Asian financial crisis will be studied in relation with international trade for the following reasons : i) we noted that there was a large current account deficit in most Asian countries ; 2) trade has become more and more important for thier economies ; 3) trade is one of the main contagion channels of financial crises. In contrast, financial crises can have some effects on trade in three ways : - credit crunch diminishing the capacity to finance trade ; - decrease in growth rate reducing the propensity to consume and exchange rates increase risks for traders, and as a consequence, causing a decrease in trade. In my thesis I will use econometric tests like the simple regression and data panel models to measure the impact of the Asian financial crisis on trade and vice versa. The bilateral relation between the Asian financial crisis and trade will be presented in three stages : the triggering factors, the spread and the resolution of this crisis

Full textThis research focuses on the evaluation of the textile-clothing sector's competitiveness in Tunisia in order to identify the necessary ways to consolidate its competitive position, so as to better respond to the new world context, marked by the enlargement of Europe to the Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC's) and by the total removal of quotas on January 2005, which have generated a world irruption on Chinese goods. To treat this question, we proceeded to a comparative analysis of both price and out-price competitiveness of such an industry between Tunisia and the CEEC's. In order to highlight the real mechanisms which found the competitiveness of Tunisian textile-clothing, we have crossed two complementary approaches. First, we studied the objective competitiveness of the East-European and Tunisian supplies based on regulation, social, economical and industrial environment data. Second, we evaluated the competitiveness perceived of Tunisian and East-European industry through the respective points of view of the economic actors based on the results of a campaign of semi-directive interviews near French clients, heads of Tunisian enterprises as well as international experts of the sector. The cross analysis showed that the performance recorded by the CEEC's on the European market would ascribable to the numerous comparative advantages that they offer to foreign investors such as more competitive wage costs and a better-qualified labour force. This analysis showed also that the Tunisian competitiveness seems impeded by the weakness of its textile sector capacity and its low potential of creativity. In addition, the 2005 first statistics showed that Bulgaria and Rumania are relatively less vulnerable than Tunisia and seem better resisting to China competition and to the total removal of quotas. We concluded that Tunisia must rethink its International Market Position by rebuilding a new strategic plan based on the valorisation of the Tunisian companies supply in order to free it from subcontracting penalty logic and regrouping performant Tunisian industrials through the constitution of platforms dedicated to export
