Abstract:
The genus Asimina has the only temperate representatives of the tropical Annonaceae, or Custard Apple family, and includes eight species that are indigenous to North America. The North American pawpaw Asimina triloba (L.) Dunal has the largest edible fruit native to the United States and is the best-known of these species. The USDA National Clonal Germplasm Repository for Asimina species is located at Kentucky State Univ. (KSU); therefore, assessment of genetic diversity is an important research priority for KSU. The inter-simple sequence repeat PCR (ISSR-PCR) methodology has been used successfully to characterize genetic diversity within and among populations of many plant species. The objective of this study was to assess the utility of ISSR markers in evaluating genetic relationships in members of the Asimina genus, as well as closely related tropical relatives in the Annona genus. Leaf samples were collected from three plants each of Asimina longifolia, A. obovata, A. parviflora, A. reticulata, A. tetramera and A. triloba. Leaf samples were also collected from three plants each of Annona cherimola, A. squamosa, A. reticulata, A. muricata, A. glabra, A. diversifolia, and A. montana. DNA was extracted from leaf samples and subjected to ISSR-PCR using the REDExtract-N-Amp™ Plant PCR Kit. DNA samples were screened with ISSR primers using the Univ. of British Columbia microsatellite primer set #9. Three primers, UBC812, UBC841, and UBC873 were found to produce 84 scorable ISSR markers and allowed the determination of genetic relationships among Asimina and Annona members examined.

Abstract:
Twelve, 10-base primers amplified a total of 20 intense and easily scorable polymorphic bands in an interspecific cross of PPF1-5 pawpaw [Asimina triloba (L.) Dunal.] × RET (Asimina reticulata Shuttlew.). In this cross, all bands scored were present in, and inherited from, the A. triloba parent PPF1-5. Nineteen of the 20 bands were found to segregate as expected (1:1 or 3:1) based on chi-square goodness-of-fit tests, and were subsequently used to evaluate genetic diversity in populations of A. triloba collected from six states (Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New York, and West Virginia) within its natural range. Analysis of genetic diversity of the populations revealed that the mean number of alleles per locus was A = 1.64, percent polymorphic loci was P = 64, and expected heterozygosity was He = 0.25. No significant differences were found among populations for any of the polymorphic indices. Partitioning of the population genetic diversity showed that the average genetic diversity within populations was Hs = 0.26, accounting for 72% of the total genetic diversity. Genetic diversity among populations was Dst = 0.10, accounting for 28% of the total genetic diversity. Nei's genetic identity and distance showed a high mean identity of 0.86 between populations. Genetic relationships among the populations examined by unweighted pair-group mean clustering analysis separated the six populations into two primary clusters: one composed of Georgia, Maryland, and New York, and the other composed of Illinois, Indiana, and West Virginia. The Georgia and Indiana populations were further separated from the other populations within each group. This study provides additional evidence that marginal populations within the natural range of A. triloba should be included in future collection efforts to capture most of the rare and local alleles responsible for this differentiation.

Abstract:
I investigated the phenology and breeding systems of two Florida endemic pawpaws, Asimina reticulata, widespread in peninsular Florida, and A. tetramera, a federally endangered species limited to two counties on the Atlantic Coastal Ridge. The purpose of this study was to determine if differences contribute to the rarity of Asimina tetramera compared with A. reticulata. The study was conducted in sand pine scrub sites with the largest populations of A. tetramera in the two counties. Flowering seasons differ for the two species. Both species are hermaphroditic and strongly protogynous. Pollination experiments show that neither species is autogamous and the primary breeding mechanism is outcrossing, although low levels of geitonogamous pollination occur in mature scrub habitats. High levels of inbreeding depression were noted in both species at both sites but inbreeding depression was relaxed the first year post-fire. Fruit set in mature habitats may be pollinator limited. I studied insects associated with the flowers in sand pine scrub habitat in southeastern Florida from 1994-1996. The most commonly represented orders were Coleoptera (25 spp.), Lepidoptera (3 spp.) and Hymenoptera (3 spp.). All Coleoptera were flower visitors; one species, Euphoria sepulchralis (Fabricius) (Scarabeaidae), visited flowers of the two Asimina species at both sites. Euryiides marcellus (Cramer) (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) eggs and larvae were observed on both species of Asimina during each year of the study. Resource management techniques were applied to a mature sand pine scrub community in Jona than Dickinson State Park in southeastern Florida for the management of Asimina tetramera. Manipulations conducted in 1996 included combinations of fire and mechanical treatments. I measured effects of these treatments on flowering and fruit-set on A. tetramera and found the fire treatments, BURN and CUT&BURN, significantly increased flowering. Mechanical treatments cutting and mulching had no significant effect.

Abstract:
The latest generation of fighter aircraft utilizes a 270Vdc power system [1]. Such high voltage DC power systems are difficult to protect with conventional circuit breakers because the current does not automatically go to zero twice per cycle during a fault like it does in an AC power system and thus arcing of the contacts is a problem. Solid state power controllers (SSPCs) are the solid state equivalent of a circuit breaker that do not arc and which can respond more rapidly to a fault than a mechanical breaker [2]. Present SSPCs are limited to lower voltages and currents by the available power semiconductors [8,9]. This dissertation presents design and experimental results for a SSPC that utilizes SiC power JFETs for the SSPC power switch to extend SSPC capability to higher voltages and currents in a space that is smaller than what is practically achievable with a Si power switch. The research started with the thermal analysis of the SSPCs power switch, which will guide the development of a SiC JFET multi-chip power module to be fabricated by Solid State Devices Inc. (SSDI) using JFETs from SiCED and/or Semisouth LLC. Multiple multi-chip power modules will be paralleled to make the SSPC switch. Fabricated devices were evaluated thermally both statically and dynamically and electrically both statically and dynamically. In addition to the SiC module research a detailed design of the high voltage SSPC control circuit capable of operating at 200andamp;ordm;C was completed including detailed analysis, modeling and simulations, detailed schematic diagrams and detailed drawings. Finally breadboards of selected control circuits were fabricated and tested to verify simulation results. Methods for testing SiC JFET devices under transient thermal conditions unique to the SSPC application was also developed.

Abstract:
The natural plant toxin asimicin and the standardized extract F020 from Asimina triloba (Annonaceae) were examined for their insecticidal properties using six insect species, encompassing four orders. Growth of Ostrinia nubilalis and Manduca sexta larvae was inhibited at 100 and 500 $\mu$g F020$\cdot$g diet$\sp{-1}$, respectively and mortality was significantly higher than controls at levels as low as 500 and 1 $\mu$g F020$\cdot$g diet$\sp{-1}$, respectively. Antifeedant properties were observed. Toxicity and growth reduction from exposure to F020 were apparent for Oncopeltus fasciatus (Hemiptera) and Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera). Tenebrio molitor was significantly affected at doses as high as 250 $\mu$g F020$\cdot\mu$l$\sp{-1}$ and at 20 $\mu$g asimicin$\cdot\mu$l$\sp{-1}$. Examination of the effect of F020 on the respiratory rate of third instar O. nubilalis larvae demonstrated that F020 is an effective respiratory inhibitor. Both F020 and asimicin were very effective at inhibiting complex I, the NADH-ubiquinone site of the electron transport chain. The EC$\sb{50}$ values for inhibition of state 3 respiration by asimicin and F020 were 0.546 nmoles$\cdot$mg protein$\sp{-1}$ and 1.656 $\mu$g$\cdot$mg protein$\sp{-1}$, respectively. Abstract:
Pawpaw (Asimina triloba (L.) Dunal) has significant potential as a new fruit crop. During ripening, loss of firmness is extremely rapid, and this trait may be the biggest obstacle to the development of a broader market as handling without injury is difficult. Cold storage of pawpaw seems limited to 4 weeks at 4 C. A study of several cultivars with commercial appeal showed that ripening traits such as ethylene production, respiration and loss of firmness were similar in all genotypes, and that no cultivar showed superior responses to cold storage. Cold storage for longer than 4 weeks caused the development of cold injury symptoms such as black discoloration, rapid loss of firmness, impaired respiration, tissue acidification, decrease in antioxidant content, decrease in volatile ester production and development of off-flavor volatile compounds. Overall cold storage injury symptoms observed in pawpaw may be due to oxidative damage linked to the failure of the two major antioxidant systems that could protect against such damage: phenolics and the ascorbateglutamate system. With the aim of enhancing pawpaw low temperature tolerance and prolonging cold storage length, different techniques such as hot air exposure and hot water dips of fruit prior to beginning cold storage, and intermittent warming periods during cold storage, were evaluated. Despite positive results with these techniques for other commodities, all the strategies failed to appreciably alter fruit ripening, loss of firmness or maintain fruit quality during and/or after cold storage.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract:
In XXV Coloquio AFUE. Palabras e imaginarios del agua. Valencia: Universitat Politècnica València, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/xxvcoloquioafue.2016.3067.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper summarizes the results of three-year joint venture between the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (Alliance) and Siemens Solar (SSI) to reduce electrical energy use of Czochralski (CZ) hotzones for growing silicon ingots used to make silicon solar cells. It also discusses a spin-off project with Advanced Silicon Materials LLC (ASiMI) to further reduce embedded energy by developing and certifying dendritic (teardrop) polycrystalline silicon (polysilicon) as an alternative feedstock to CZ rods or granular polysilicon. The first project saved over 50% (25 kilowatt-hours per kilogram) and reduced Argon gas consumption by 85%. The dendritic polysilicon project is expected to reduce process energy by 25% (another 50 to 63 kWh/kg). These two steps of the overall process normally consume 250 to 300 kWh/kg but now they will require only 175 to 200 kWh/kg, an overall reduction of 30%.

Abstract:
RGD peptides and those derived from the fibrinogen γ chain (e.g., γ 400-411 (H12)) are inhibitors of platelet aggregation and fibrinogen binding. These two sets of peptides interact with a common adhesive protein receptor on platelets which contains GPIIb-IIIa (JBC, 262:947, 1987). A 17 amino acid sequence near the carboxyl terminus of GPIIbα recognized by the PMI-1 monoclonal antibody (JCI, 78:1103, 1986), isexpressed on the cell surface under certain conditions which are not permissive for fibrinogen binding. Thus, achange in the surface orientation of GPIIb is associated with inhibitionofplatelet aggregation and fibrinogen binding. To investigate whether or notsuch changes in GPIIb-IIIa occur during peptide inhibition of plateletfunction, we examined peptide effectson exposure of the PMI-1 epitope. Three different RGD peptides induced reversibly increased binding of 125I-PMI-1 to both resting and thrombin-stimulated platelets. Specificity of this effect was demonstrated bythe failure of the inactive peptides GRGESP andSDGR to induce PMI-1 binding. This effect does not appear to requireviable platelets since it was observed on fixed cells and in detergent solutioncontaining purified GPIIb-IIIa. Theγchair, peptides provoked asimilar effect, but required greater concentrations than the RGD peptides. These results indicate that RGDpeptides, in addition to their presumed competitive effect on adhesive protein binding to platelets, are also capableof increasing the surface exposureofthe carboxyl terminus of the heavy chain of GPIIb, thus potentially altering platelet function.

Abstract:
The centrifugal compressors are used in a wide variety of turbo machines ranging from low-pressure fans for cooling of electric motors to high-pressure ratio gas turbine compressors, from tiny cryogenic coolers to large industrial petrochemical compressor stations. An automated design scheme making use of Navier Stokes equation and Artificial Neural Network is envisaged as in figure 1. The present work describes a user friendly scheme to carry out blade geometry generation and to carry out preliminary designs that are two of the most important steps of the automated design scheme. Present paper describes a robust method to carry out these two steps. This paper also describes a method adopted to decide on viable design space. In the blade generation steps, present method was applied to that obtained by other methods reported in literature. It was found that the present scheme could replicate the centrifugal compressor geometry with just six parameters as compared to many more by others. In Mihai[1], use of adjoint method is used for optimization of NASA rotor. The design had 28 parameters. In Trigg[2], a systematic approach for optimization of a two dimensional blade design is reported. Two dimensional profile is defined by seventeen parameters. In Wang Hong liang[3] an optimization based on particle swarm principle is made use of to optimize the blade angle distribution at hub and shroud and had seven control points to do this. In order to minimize the number of control points, Asimara and Goto[4], used inverse method. Here blade loading at hub and shroud is the input to a inverse method to generate the blade geometry. Optimizer works on the blade loading. The generated geometry is analyzed by CFD calculations. From the above references, it is clear that the present scheme is a user friendly general method.
