The present study describes the bioactivity guided isolation and structural elucidation of novel anticancer compounds from the Bangladeshi medicinal plant Blumera lacera. At the outset nineteen Bangladeshi medicinal plants were selected and collected from different parts of Bangladesh. Plants underwent preliminary cytotoxicity screening based on their traditional medicinal uses, limited previous research on them, and their availability. This thesis presents results from a sample of quasars observed with the X-ray astronomy satellite ASCA. The ASCA sample consists of 68 quasars, 35 of which are radio-loud and 33 radio-quiet, covering a range of quasar redshift and luminosity. Differences were found between the radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars; the radio-loud quasars tend to have harder (or flatter) X-ray spectra (~1.5-1.6) and are more X-ray luminous, compared to the softer (~1.9), lower luminosity, radio-quiet quasars. This thesis describes work undertaken using data from the ROSAT and ASCA missions, in order to study the coronal x-ray emission of cool, late type stars. Chapters 1 and 2 summarise the emission processes involved and the methods by which the x-rays are detected and analysed, including a discussion of the ROSAT and ASCA missions. Beginning in March 1999 at Georgia Institute of Technology, the ASACA (Assessment of Spatial Aerosol Composition in Atlanta) program has provided PM₂. ₅ concentration and speciation using particle concentration monitoring in and around metropolitan Atlanta. Since 1999, three of the ASACA sites have collected PM₂. ₅ in an urban setting: Fort McPherson (FT, SW), South Dekalb (SD, SE), and Tucker (TU, NE). This cross-sectional study analyzed the association between poor quality of sleep and adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in 389 Peruvian patients with HIV/AIDS. Poor quality of sleep was measured with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and adherence with the CEAT-VIH (Peruvian adaptation). A Poisson generalized linear model with robust standard errors was used to estimate prevalence ratios and 95%CI.
