Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of the theory of media memory and its role in the construction of collectively shared ideas about the past. The author proceeds in his work from McLuhan’s expansive interpretation of media. The processes of mediatization of communicative and cultural memory are being analyzed. Considering the views of Y. M. Lotman and J. Assman on cultural and communicative memory, the author comes to the conclusion that their theories explaining the functioning of collective memory in the era of oral and written communication, cease to work when describing the mechanisms of memory reproduction in the digital environment. Theories of mediatization of memory regard communicative memory are limited to J. Assman’s understanding of, that is, as a memory of the recent past covered by the time of the existence of contemporary digital media. Based on the works of J. Garde-Hansen, E. Hopkins and others, the author considered the theory of digital memory showing its difference from mediamemory. The processes of mediatization of collective memory in the digital environment lead to the emergence of media memory as a special virtual mechanism for constructing ideas about the past. Media memory possesses the characteristics of communicative, cultural and digital memory simultaneously, being a phenomenon of the digital era, where the change in the means of communication has led to the transformation of the content of memories and ways of their reproduction.

Abstract:
Students' difficulties in visualizing learning material often cannot be explained only through text or static images. Apart from that, the lack of student involvement in traditional learning and changes in the demands of learning needs in the digital era, make the development of interactive infographic media important in the current digital context. This research aims to highlight the importance of needs analysis in determining suitable learning media, especially appropriate infographic media, to support learning in elementary schools. This research uses quantitative descriptive methods. The Guttman scale questionnaire is used to collect data on the needs of students, teachers, learning media, and learning objectives. The subjects involved in this research were students. The aspects measured include pedagogical, technical, cognitive, aesthetic, socio-cultural and evaluative aspects, which are then analyzed from questionnaire data to determine the most appropriate learning media. The results of the analysis show that the highest criteria are the pedagogical aspect, followed by the technical aspect, then the cognitive aspect, the aesthetic aspect, the socio-cultural aspect, and finally the evaluative aspect. This concludes the need to consider interactive infographic media that can improve the quality of learning. Implications of this research make significant contributions to the development of technology-based education at the elementary level.

Abstract:
Since digital media entered the business domain, many different tools and platforms have transformed the nature of business communications. This transformation has not been easy, since the journey has been accompanied by challenges from the marketers’ side against the adoption of the new platforms into the firm’s communication channels. Business to business marketers have also been engaged in such challenges by maintaining a slow adoption, which has motivated the researchers to study the adoption of different means and tools of digital communication in a business context. Through this research, I contribute by exploring the adoption strategies of digital platforms in the B2B supply chain including B2B firms, retailers and end users. By digital media, I mainly refer to social media and beacon technology. First, I begin this thesis by identifying the adoption and integration strategies of social media and digital marketing into traditional marketing channels in a B2B context. In this part, I identify the B2B firms’ target audience and propose a model facilitating a B2B firm’s practical social media adoption strategies. Second, to explore the benefits of different social media content sharing approaches derived from information accessibility resulted in the prior study of this thesis, I introduce and examine Public and Gated-Content sharing approaches. Thereafter, assisted by Social Power Theory and Resource Dependence Theory, I examine the effect of Public and Gated-Content sharing approaches on the target audience’s willingness to interact with the firm. The findings of this study reveal that Gated-Content approach can help the firms build closer relationship with the target audience and engage them in a co-creation process. Third, by studying proximity marketing through the adoption of beacon technology in the retail context, I explore the current methods of usage, as well as the benefits and challenges of in-store proximity marketing adoption for content sharing purposes. I complete the thesis by presenting the different challenges of such adoption, which consist technical, human behavior, managerial perception, resource and privacy factors. Finally, I identify the need to integrate the physical aspect of place and location back again into the online digital communication channels within a retail context.

QC 20171219

Abstract:
The term patina refers to a particular quality of decay in material objects, where the decay is both a physical and symbolic property of the object. As a physical property patina is an expression of the passage of time, a visual marker of the object's timeboundedness reflected in signs of ageing and/or use. This thesis considers the implications of a digital patina, including its relevance for an analysis of the relationship between things and time or timeboundedness.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the contextualization of my artistic practice, which explores digital glitch as a disruptive force and an aesthetic treatment in the contemporary technological world. While the body of work draws on the methodology of glitch art, this paper attempts to relate the idea of glitch to a wider range of philosophical and artistic frameworks stemming from Lettrism, Situationist International, Punk, and Nihilism. The aim of this investigation of a digital disturbance through its categorization into natural, stimulated and assimilated glitch, is to facilitate an understanding of the glitch event as both something threatening and attractive, while it transitions from a spontaneous to a controlled process in a photoreal image. The passing of the destructive glitch from life to art is placed against the backdrop of the apocalypse, which one may imagine as a literal and metaphorical disaster in the physical world and value systems of western society.
vii, 113 leaves ; col. ill. ; 29 cm

Cass, Taryn May. "A comparison of the views of South African and American photojournalists to the digital manipulation of news photographs." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002873.

Full text
Abstract:
Digital technology has now become pervasive at most publications in South Africa and in America. Pictures are routinely digitised by publications for ease of handling in the layout process, and this makes it relatively easy to alter or manipulate the pictures using computer software programmes. This thesis attempts to gauge the views of South African photojournalists about the digital manipulation of news photographs, and compare these to the views of American photojournalists. It is based on the hypothesis that South African and American photojournalists have different views of what is acceptable manipulation of news photographs, and that their reasons for this will also be different. This thesis also suggests that the manipulation of news photographs is ethically problematic and can damage the credibility of both the photojournalist and the publication in which the photographs appear. The study involves a comparison of the results from a questionnaire given to South African photojournalists and a similar questionnaire given to American photojournalists. The questionnaires were then supplemented by interviews with six South African photojournalists. The thesis then draws conclusions from the responses to the questionnaires and interviews. These conclusions partially support the initial hypothesis, in that there are some differences between the views of South African and American photojournalists, but, on the whole, these are remarkably similar. Photojournalists do seem to find the manipulation of news photographs to be ethically problematic, but they may find the manipulation of other kinds of images (eg fashion or soft news) to be acceptable. South African photographers also find the manipulation of images by other means (eg different lenses or darkroom techniques) to be more acceptable than Americans do. Although the underlying reasons for these views may differ, maintaining the credibility of the photographer and the publication does seem to be the major issue for avoiding digital manipulation. South African photographers seemed to think that if the photographer had done his or her job well, there would be no need for manipulation, and both groups (but especially the Americans) felt that manipulation could often be equated to lying to the reader, and that this might damage their reputation, and that of their publications.

Abstract:
Globalisation is one of the most important cultural phenomena of our times and yet, one of the least understood. In popular and critical discourse there has been a struggle to articulate its human affects. The tendency to focus upon macro accounts can leave gaps in our understanding of its micro experiences.1 1 As Jonathon Xavier Inda and Renato Rosaldo argue there is a strong pattern of thinking about globalisation 'principally in terms of very large-scale economic, political, or cultural processes'. (See: Jonathon Xavier Inda and Renato Rosaldo (Eds.), The Anthropology of Globalisation: A Reader, Malden, Blackwell Publishing, 2002, p. 5.) In this thesis, I will describe globalisation as a dynamic matrix of flows. I will argue that globalisation's spatial, temporal, and kinetic re-arrangements have particular impacts upon bodies and consciousnesses, creating contingent and often unquantifiable flows. I will introduce digital art as a unique platform of articulation: a style borne of globalisation's oeuvre, and technically well-equipped to converse with and emulate its affects. By exploring digital art through an historical lens I aim to show how it continues dialogues established by earlier art forms. I will claim that digital art has the capacity to re-centre globalisation around the individual, through sensory and experiential forms that encourage subjective and affective encounters. By approaching it in this way, I will move away from universal theorems in favour of particular accounts. Through exploring a wide array of digital artworks, I will discuss how digital art can capture fleeting experiences and individual expressions. I will closely examine its unique tools of articulation to include: immersive, interactive, haptic, and responsive technologies, and analyse the theories and ideas that they converse with. Through this iterative process, I aim to explore how digital art can both facilitate and generate new articulations of globalisation, as an experiential phenomenon.

The main objective is to demonstrate how the simultaneous evolution of the technical, morphological and material aspects influenced the book and the appearance of the e-book. The second objective is to show the epistemological changes because of that evolution. The technical aspects relate to techniques involved in the production of both book and ebook. The morphological aspects relate to its form. The material aspects relate to culture, the editorial market and the reading culture. That simultaneity generates a unique change in the history of reading, book and the e-book. Reality presents readers authors that selfpublish, technology companies such as Amazon and Apple that are nearly publishers and books-apps-games. Cognitive ramifications of that evolution appear in the reading of the ebook that is different from the reading of the book.

Abstract:
South African photojournalists’ perception of digital technology’s impact on the credibility of news photographs is investigated in this study. Digital technology has the capabilities to produce “manipulated” photographs that appear realistic and credible. Credibility is dependent on a variety of factors including codes of realism and codes of production, which fit conventional codes of photographic representation. Manipulation is the act of deviating from accepted codes of photographic representation that may jeopardise the credibility of news photography. This thesis proposes a new theoretical framework that encompasses existing theories of semiotics, ideology, naturalism, realism and credibility. These theories underpin the definitions and discussion on manipulation and credibility. A descriptive survey is used which attempts to discover photojournalists’ views towards credibility. This research draws on qualitative research methods using a largely qualitative questionnaire, which generates both qualitative and quantitative data. The questions are formulated around two case studies of digitally manipulated photographs. The trends and responses in the research data are connected and discussed. The findings of this study are discussed in terms of credibility, awareness of the digital changes, the reason for the changes, the role of a caption, deletion techniques and background changes. The empirical situation is analysed in relation to the theoretical discussions and this study’s theorisation of photographic representation.

Abstract:
Abstract The human behaviors and interactions on social media have maintained themselves as highly dynamic real-time social systems representing individual social awareness at fine spatial, temporal, and digital resolutions. In this chapter, we introduce the opportunities and challenges that human dynamics-centered social media bring to Digital Earth. We review the information diffusion of social media, the multi-faced implications of social media, and some real-world cases. Social media, on one hand, has facilitated the prediction of human dynamics in a wide spectrum of aspects, including public health, emergency response, decision making, and social equity promotion, and will also bring unintended challenges for Digital Earth, such as rumors and location spoofing on the other. Considering the multifaceted implications, this chapter calls for GIScientists to raise their awareness of the complex impacts of social media, to model the geographies of social media, and to understand ourselves as a unique species living both on the Earth and in Digital Earth.

Abstract:
Sometimes things shift when you’re not looking. One morning, I woke up and discovered I was in style. Or, at least, what I dowas in style: digital and networked scholarship had suddenly been discovered by higher ed media. For this fifteen minutes of fame, practically every Chronicle of Higher Education link on my Twitter feed was about some aspect of online identity or net-worked scholarship.1 The LSE blog and Inside Higher Ed, too.I peered about, waiting for the punch line. I am accustomed, when I get up in front of fellow educators and academics and say “I study scholarship and... Twitter,” to getting the reception of a failed stand-up comic. “Really? Twitter?” people communicate with their eyebrows. I am becoming a great student of arched eyebrows.

Abstract:
AbstractIn their introduction, the editors explore the complexities and contexts around the ambiguous term “postdigital,” particularly the “messy” entanglements of the digital and analog, material and symbolic, technology and sociality that it encompasses. The editors also introduce the concept of media constellations as the interwoven relationalities at the heart of a postdigital society whose “post” does not mean “overcome” but rather that digitality has become part of complex, everyday interrelationships and correlations. With its particular interest in participation, the book’s introduction lays out how participating in the “postdigital condition” is tightly knit with power relations and political economies. This performative aspect in an educational context means that contemporary media constellations shape participation just as the practices, actors, and technologies of participation shape these very constellations.

Abstract:
AbstractRecommender systems are widely used in various applications, such as online shopping, social media, and news personalization. They can help systems by delivering only the most relevant and promising information to their users and help people by mitigating information overload. At the same time, algorithmic recommender systems are a new form of gatekeeper that preselects and controls the information being presented and actively shapes users’ choices and behavior. This becomes a crucial aspect, as, if unaddressed and not safeguarded, these systems are susceptible to perpetuate and even amplify existing biases, including unwanted societal biases, leading to unfair and discriminatory outcomes. In this chapter, we briefly introduce recommender systems, their basic mechanisms, and their importance in various applications. We show how their outcomes and performance are assessed and discuss approaches to addressing pluralism and fairness in recommender systems. Finally, we highlight recently emerging directions within recommender systems research, pointing out opportunities for digital humanism to contribute interdisciplinary expertise.

Abstract:
AbstractDigital interactive accessibility services must enable human interaction with the media content beyond consumption, ensuring that people can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the content and contribute to it. All these new types of interactions are also a field of study in audiovisual translation (AVT) and media accessibility (MA), as translation is a form of human–computer interaction (HCI) (O’Brien, Translation Spaces 1:101–122, 2012). Therefore, the role of technology in AVT/MA is a key aspect not only in the process of creation, but also for distribution, delivery, and consumption. This tendency is expected to grow in the coming years as “technology is also the basis of tools to translate or adapt content and tools to consume content” (Matamala in Accessibilitat i traducció audiovisual, 2019). The progressive transition from Web 2.0 to Web 3.0, with the irruption of recent technologies such as blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI), is opening up innovative forms of communication and interaction for users in the digital world. Yet, challenges in relation to intellectual property rights (IPR) management in AVT/MA remain a major concern (Orero et al., 2023; Serrat-Roozen & Oncins, 2023). The following chapter presents the results of a series of focus groups held with professionals and researchers from the different fields of the AVT and MA in the frame of the European project MediaVerse. This three-year project was aimed at designing and testing a framework to allow professionals and laymen to publish multimedia content that may be easily shared. Results presented highlight user’s needs and expectations from AVT/MA professionals in relation to copyright management, through the use of blockchain technology to protect and recognise IPR for professionals in these fields.

AbstractThis chapter explores possible connections among discourse analysis, materiality and biographical research in the context of subjectivation. The extant methodological/epistemological concepts linking the Foucauldian idea of discourse with biographical research do not provide clear openings for the incorporation of materiality, specifically those in digital form. This chapter proposes an adapted, modified approach to the analysis of material-discursive practices to the end of investigating the materiality and mediality of relationally understood processes of Bildung. In so doing, it identifies a need for a post-anthropocentric understanding of the biographical that focuses on the variety of socio-medial relational reconfigurations.

Abstract:
The European Union's planning documents for 2040 clearly outline the importance of an environmental economy, which focuses on the economic impact of environmental policies and the sustainable management of natural resources, emphasising the need to integrate ecological principles into economic systems. The planning documents at all levels pay particular attention to the circulation of information, to keeping the public informed about the promotion of green thinking and sustainable development. The media ecosystem, which focuses on the media environment and its impact on people's behaviour, perception and understanding, plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion on environmental and sustainable development issues. Contemporary economics researchers argue that effective environmental governance requires a synergistic approach through the media ecosystem to raise public awareness of sustainable development issues. The media have become an integral aspect of everyday life, providing information and serving as a basis for people to make choices and decisions. This paper presents the results of a study carried out on the behaviour of young people in the media ecosystem and the factors influencing the decision-making process. The study was based on theoretical research of documentary sources and digital materials, analysis of statistical data. The analysis of survey data was used to analyse the factors influencing the behaviour and decision-making of young people in Latvian comprehensive schools in the digital environment, including their perception of factors influencing sustainable development. The findings show that the contemporary media ecosystem plays a significant role in people's lives, influencing their behaviour and decisions. The data will be used in the next stages of the research, where the behaviour of all age groups in the media ecosystem, factors influencing decision-making and perceptions of sustainable development will be explored.

Airport service quality evaluation is commonly found on social media, including Google Maps. This valuable for airport management in order to enhance the quality of services provided. However; prior studies either provide general review for topics discussed by travellers or provide sentimental value to tag the entire review without specifically mentioning the airport service that is behind such value. Accordingly; this work proposes using aspect based sentimental analysis in order to provide more detailed analysis for travellers’ reviews. This works applied aspect based sentimental analysis on data collected from Google Map about Dubai and Doha airports. The results provide tangible reasons to use aspect based sentimental analysis in order to understand more the travellers and spot airport services that are in need for improvement.

Abstract:
Artificial intelligence is a crucial and controversial topic. Rapid advances in technology have led to greater scrutiny and serious discussion in today's academic institutions. In this regard, there is another aspect to this issue related to the level of use of media work and the production of media content in digital media. At the same time, the Kurdistan Region and the Kurdish media have not been exempted from the wave of modern technology that has embraced the means of communication. From this point of view, this study aims to understand the extent of use of artificial intelligence in creating Kurdish digital media content. Therefore, the question of the extent of use and benefits of modern technological advances in Kurdish media, especially in digital media, has become a research topic. To obtain a correct and accurate scientific answer, researchers used descriptive types and research methods. They rely on research tools. The study also includes a collection of official Kurdish media organizations in the Kurdistan Region. The problem is that these digital media are the media that use artificial intelligence tools, apps, services, and features. At the end of the study, the researchers reached several conclusions: There is a lack of experience of the Kurdish media in official digital media institutions relating to the use of artificial intelligence. At the same time, their competency level is also low. On the other hand, the institutions do not provide the media with sufficient professional and technical development. In addition, the media of Kurdistan's official digital media institutions usually use tools, applications, functions and services (artificial intelligence) at different levels and in different ways, and producing media content for both purposes (editing, writing).

Abstract:
"The paper focuses on one of the aspects most investigated and monitored in recent years by the Desi index (Digital Economy and Society Index) on the digitization process in Europe, human capital, with an in-depth focus on primary school teachers. The emergent state of Covid 19 has had a strong impact in the field of education, so much so that the uses of digital technology and its applications are now an essential topic in public and political debate. The implementation of digital devices for education, during the lockdown, has necessarily led to a reflection on the methodological paths that can be applied and tested in the educational context. There are many uncertainties linked to the validity of new digital didactic approaches and to the communicative and transmissive effectiveness of the contents where the digital skills of teachers and families and the lack of adequate equipment risk compromising the objective of effective and inclusive education. How can educational quality and inclusion be guaranteed through digital communication, beyond socio-cultural inequalities? How can school digital capital guarantee new educational planning in the classroom? These are the main questions of the paper, which will focus on illustrating the communicative strategies of visual storytelling and graphicacy as tools for democratising digital communication, for sociocultural inclusion and for reducing sociocultural inequalities, by illustrating the structural framework and the main actions/strategy of the European Erasmus Plus project CAVE (Communication and Visual Education in homeschooling)."

Abstract:
The article talks about the philosophical foundations that characterize the mechanism of internal inducement to action. As an academic, constitutional, and socio-ideological concept, the boundaries of freedom are outlined, which are displayed in the field of modern media space. The term «freedom» is considered as several philosophical concepts that formed the basis of the modern interpretation of this concept. The totality of its meanings is generalized into one that is adapted for the modern system. Parallels are drawn between the interaction of the concept of user freedom with the plane of domestic mass media because despite, the fact that consciousness is knowledge, the incoming information directly affects the individual and collective consciousness. Using the example of the most popular digital platforms, the components of the impact on users and the legal aspect of their implementation are analyzed. When considering the issues of freedom of choice and freedom of action on the Internet, special attention is paid to methods of collecting and processing information, in particular, the limitations and possibilities of digital programs-algorithms of the popular search engine Google. The types of personal information collected by Google about the user are classified and the possible mechanisms of influence on personal choice and access to information on the Internet are characterized. The article analyzes the constitutional guarantees of freedom and the impact of digital technologies on them. Particular attention is paid to ethics, in particular journalistic, which nominally regulates the limits of the humane, permissible, a / moral (unacceptable/acceptable) in the implementation of professional information activities in the media. Thus, the issue of freedom of choice and freedom of action in the plane of domestic mass media is subject to an objective examination of its components, they are analyzed for a proper constitutionally suitable phenomenon, which must be investigated from the point of view of compliance with human rights and freedoms and professional standards within the media.

Abstract:
Social media creates new spaces for connecting people digitally and provides a forum for the exchange of information and discussion. Online spaces such as Facebook groups (FGs) have become part of the fabric of social interaction in many rural areas, with both residents and others living away from the community maintaining a connection in the virtual space. Community FGs are routinely used to share place-based information about resources, events or issues, and to discuss topics of shared interest. In research, these groups allow researchers to connect directly with people who have an interest in what happens within specific communities and offer rich opportunities for participants to likewise engage with research. We can reflect on how FGs in rural communities have the potential to enhance and/or complement existing approaches by making research with dispersed communities more accessible and affordable, while considering challenges around confidentiality and digital inclusion given the characteristics and size of the population. Social media has developed at pace during the last decade, and digital ethics is a shifting methods sub-field that poses challenges to social sciences and humanities researchers. Apart from platforms’ changing terms and conditions, research with and on social media groups has specific ethical challenges (e.g. around anonymity, confidentiality, and data access) that require tailored consideration. In particular, when approaching netnography and similar methods with social media groups, dialogic approaches which aim to engage, respect and protect participants are critical. There is consensus on the need to agree the access conditions with the group administrator as a first step, but there is no guidance on good practice on developing these conditions. To create these guidelines, we have worked collaboratively across disciplines and with administrators of Facebook groups to explore what such process could look like: aspects to address, pros and cons of potential approaches, and potential challenges and solutions.

Peculiar features of digital environment include: integration of ICTs; use of local and global networks and resources; support and development of qualitatively new technologies of information processing; active use of modern means, methods and forms of teaching in the educational process. The organization of activities in terms of digital learning environment provides appropriate changes in the interaction between subjects of the educational process. Today, means and technologies of the information and communication networks (ICNs), in particular the Internet, which custom and operational-procedural properties were changed at the initial stage from closed local to open ones at present, become widespread. The development of ICNs (from closed local to open ones) changes the typology of learning environments. The following models of learning environments, which widely use ICT and ICN tools (with basic features that characterize them) are distinguished: using the local communication network for presentation of educational information; using the local communication network and open network resources; using open network resources; for independent use of open network resources directly in the classroom by a student; for use of open network resources by a student in the process of independent learning activity; for use by a student educational resources, specially created by a teacher, as well as resources of an open networks in his independent learning activity.

Abstract:
As every aspect of life – from job seeking to health care – moves online, digital connectivity is a daily necessity, not a luxury. Against the backdrop of the UK’s worst cost of living crisis in 40 years, discussions about fuel and food poverty are now joined by a new concern with what has become known as digital poverty – challenges affording the cost of online connectivity and devices. Using data from a survey of low-income households, this Policy Briefing explores the extent of digital poverty in the UK and shows how it can exacerbate other forms of poverty among the most disadvantaged households. It also shows how current fixes, including social tariffs aimed at the poorest in society, are not effectively addressing this critical issue.
