Abstract:

Organizations use the formal mentoring program as a human resource intervention in the socialization of newcomers. Mentoring scholars have found that effective mentoring leads to various socialization outcomes of newcomers, partially because mentors, seen as organizational agents, can facilitate the learning process in the socialization. Despite this progress, several limitations can be found in the literature. First, it is largely unknown how mentoring influences socialization outcomes in addition to the learning process (e.g. assimilation process). Second, the assumption that mentors are org

This paper applies the ethnic boundary making theory developed by Andreas Wimmer to understand the maintenance of Jewish ethnic identification in Sweden, as expressed in thirteen interviews with Swedish Jews. Wimmer’s theory holds that ethnic conflict and persecution routinizes and entrenches perceptions of ethnic difference; I argue that the antisemitic persecutions of the 20th century has entrenched the perception of the ethnic distinctiveness of Jews among Jews themselves. These persecutions also contribute to alienation from Swedish society, which does not share the same historical identit

Abstract:
This PhD focuses on the life stories of ten Scottish women retirees. Exploring their subjective experiences of retirement, professional and personal attachments, and sense of belonging, it provides a within-gender analysis by means of intersectionality theory (Yuval-Davis 2011) and thematic narrative analysis (Riessman 2008). Women’s retirement is a largely unexplored phenomenon with a general lack of engagement with subjective experience and a preoccupation with a male, middle-class template in which retirement is considered a discrete transition from employment, triggering loss of identity.

In late 20th century America, multiculturalism emerged as a doctrine of equal respect and a popular ideological framework for resolving intergroup relations. In this dissertation I examine survey and personal interview data to more clearly identify patterns of ideological support for multiculturalism or assimilation in the U.S. public and to isolate the motivations for their preferences.
