Abstract:
The cross-stitch peripheral suture has good strength, but the large amount of exposed suture on the tendon surface has restricted its clinical usage. We report a method of embedded cross-stitch that incorporates cross-stitches into peripheral sutures and reduces the amount of exposed suture on the tendon surface. Thirty-three fresh pig flexor tendons were divided equally into three groups and repaired with cross-stitch, embedded cross-stitch, or modified Halsted sutures. The tendons were tested in an Instron tensile machine to assess the mechanical performance of these repairs. With an identical number of strands across the repair site, the gap formation and ultimate forces of the embedded cross-stitch method were statistically greater than those of the cross-stitch and modified Halsted methods. The embedded cross-stitch method also had significantly greater stiffness and energy to failure than the cross-stitch method. The embedded cross-stitch method, with little suture exposure on the tendon and sufficient strength, presents an alternative to the current cross-stitch peripheral repair.

Abstract:
Background: Given the variety of suturing techniques for bucket-handle meniscal repair, it is important to assess which suturing technique best restores native biomechanics. Purpose/Hypothesis: To biomechanically compare vertical mattress and cross-stitch suture techniques, in single- and double-row configurations, in their ability to restore native knee kinematics in a bucket-handle medial meniscal tear model. The hypothesis was that there would be no difference between the vertical mattress and cross-stitch double-row suture techniques but that the double-row technique would provide significantly improved biomechanical parameters versus the single-row technique. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Ten matched pairs of human cadaver knees were randomly assigned to the vertical mattress (n = 10) or cross-stitch (n = 10) repair group. Each knee underwent 4 consecutive testing conditions: (1) intact, (2) displaced bucket-handle tear, (3) single-row suture configuration on the femoral meniscus surface, and (4) double-row suture configuration (repair of femoral and tibial meniscus surfaces). Knees were loaded with a 1000-N axial compressive force at 0°, 30°, 60°, 90°, and 120° of flexion for each condition. Resultant medial compartment contact area, average contact pressure, and peak contact pressure data were recorded. Results: Intact state contact area was not restored at 0° ( P = .027) for the vertical double-row configuration and at 0° ( P = .032), 60° ( P < .001), and 90° ( P = .007) of flexion for the cross-stitch double-row configuration. No significant differences were found in the average contact pressure and peak contact pressure between the intact state and the vertical mattress and cross-stitch repairs with single- and double-row configurations at any flexion angles. When the vertical and cross-stich repairs were compared across all flexion angles, no significant differences were observed in single-row configurations, but in double-row configurations, cross-stitch repair resulted in a significantly decreased contact area, average contact pressure, and peak contact pressure (all P < .001). Conclusion: Single- and double-row configurations of the vertical mattress and cross-stitch inside-out meniscal repair techniques restored native tibiofemoral pressure after a medial meniscal bucket-handle tear at all assessed knee flexion angles. Despite decreased contact area with a double-row configuration, mainly related to the cross-stitch repair, in comparison with the intact state, the cross-stitch double-row repair led to decreased pressure as compared with the vertical double-row repair. These findings are applicable only at the time of the surgery, as the biological effects of healing were not considered. Clinical Relevance: Medial meniscal bucket-handle tears may be repaired with the single- or double-row configuration of vertical mattress or cross-stitch sutures.

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to assist engineers in making quick decisions to improve the strength of single jersey knit fabric. This article focused on the different parameters of the single jersey knit fabrics (like stitch length, yarn count, GSM, tightness factor, and fabric thickness) are considered to know their influence on the bursting strength. Five hypotheses have been developed for plain, pique, and fleece knits. Analyses of Variance (ANOVA), correlation coefficient, and regression analysis are executed using the STATA 14.1 program to test the hypotheses at a 5% level of significance. Three of the five hypotheses are rejected. This study supports that the bursting strength of the fabric is dependent on the tightness factor, stitch length, and count of the single jersey knitted fabrics. Here, the stitch length, count, and tightness factor are inversely proportional to the bursting strength. The GSM and fabric thickness have less impact on the bursting strength.

Abstract:
Postoperative staple-line bleeding after stapled hemorrhoidopexy represents a major issue of this procedure, especially in the day surgery setting. In this study we assess the possible benefit of using circular bioabsorbable staple-line reinforcement to reduce the risk of hemorrhage when performing stapled hemorrhoidopexy in a day surgery setting. Patients with symptomatic II to III grade hemorrhoidal disease were randomly assigned into two groups. In Group A we performed a stapled hemorrhoidopexy using PPH33-03® with Seamguard®, a bioabsorbable staple-line reinforcement; in Group B, we used only a PPH33-03® stapler. We evaluated the intraoperative and postoperative staple-line bleeding and, secondarily, the duration of surgery, need for additional hemostatic stitches, and presence of postoperative complications. One hundred patients were enrolled in the study. Group A patients showed a statistically significant decrease of intraoperative bleeding (4 vs 42% in Group B) and hemostatic stitch placement (5.7 vs 42%) with the consequent reduction in mean operative time, postoperative pain, and tenesmus. There were no differences between the two groups in hemorrhoidal disease control or postoperative late complications. The use of bioabsorbable staple-line reinforcement while performing stapled hemorrhoidopexy may allow improvement of the safety of this procedure, especially in a day surgery setting.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Introduction: Long Leg View is an x-ray examination of all parts of the lower extremity using a long vertical cassette which aims to measure the angle between the mechanical axis of the femur and tibia. Knee Joint examination with indications of osteoarthritis at the Radiology Installation of RSUP Dr. Sardjito Yogyakarta uses supine AP projection, Lateral recumbent, Skyline, and Stitch View Long Leg. Methods: This research is a qualitative research with a case study approach. Collecting data by means of observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews with patients, sending doctors, radiologists, and radiographers. Data collection was carried out in March 2018 at the Radiology Installation of Dr. RSUP. Sardjito Yogyakarta. The data obtained were analyzed using an interactive model. Results: On the Stitch View Long Leg examination at the Radiology Installation, Dr. Sardjito Yogyakarta uses a collimation area from the pelvis to the ankle joint. According to the resident doctor of orthopedic surgery and traumatology, Dr. Sardjito Yogyakarta, Stitch View Long Leg is able to see the shape of the foot formation, namely the O formation or X formation. In addition, according to radiology specialists, looking at the alignment deviation of the lower extremities can be used to assess the grade of osteoarthritis. Under normal conditions, the anatomical axis of the femur and tibia forms an angle of 6º ± 2º, while the mechanical axis line under normal conditions is 8 mm ± 7 mm medial to the center of the knee joint line. The alignment of varus and valgus has been associated with the development of medial or lateral osteoarthritis. Conclusion: Stitch View Long Leg aims to assess the grade of osteoarthritis through assessment of lower extremity alignment deviations, see the overall mechanical and anatomical alignment of the lower extremities, help determine the calculation of the angle of bone cutting during Total Knee Replacement surgery, and see the right and left symmetrical balance of genu.

Abstract:
Objective To assess the value of transvaginal ultrasound parameters after cerclage placement in estimating the risk of spontaneous preterm birth. Study Design This is a retrospective cohort at a single tertiary care center from 2013 to 2016. Women carrying a singleton, nonanomalous fetus with cerclage in situ and at least one postcerclage transvaginal ultrasound from 160/7 to 256/7 weeks' gestation were included. In addition to abstracting maternal demographic and obstetric characteristics, two study investigators separately reviewed each of the images from the first transvaginal ultrasound after cerclage placement, masked to pregnancy outcomes. We measured the angle between the anterior uterine wall and cervical canal at the internal os and external os, closed canal length above and below the stitch, width of the anterior and posterior cervix at the level of the cerclage, and stitch distance from the cervical canal. The presence of additional ultrasound findings such as sludge and cervical funneling was also noted. The main outcomes were preterm birth < 34 weeks and preterm birth < 37 weeks. Transvaginal ultrasound parameters were compared between women with preterm birth and those without preterm birth using chi-square, Fisher's exact, and Wilcoxon's rank-sum tests, as appropriate. Log binomial regression was used to estimate the relative risk of preterm birth for all significant obstetric and ultrasound characteristics. Results A total of 102 women met inclusion criteria: 58% had history-indicated, 20% ultrasound-indicated, and 23% exam-indicated cerclages. Of these, 28 (27.5%) women delivered at < 34 weeks' gestation, and 48 (47.0%) women delivered at < 37 weeks' gestation. Preterm birth did not vary by race, maternal age, insurance, smoking, or gestational age of the earliest prior preterm birth (for multiparous women), but women who had preterm birth were more likely to have exam-indicated cerclage. There were several transvaginal ultrasound parameters associated with preterm birth < 34 weeks and preterm birth < 37 weeks. Of these, cervical length below the stitch, stitch distance from the cervical canal, straight cervical canal, funneling to or past the stitch, and presence of sludge had the greatest effect sizes. Conclusion Rates of preterm birth are high postcerclage. In addition to measuring cervical length, utilization of postcerclage transvaginal ultrasound to evaluate the location of the cerclage within the cervix, the curvature of the cervical canal, and the presence of funneling and sludge may help identify women who are at the highest risk for preterm birth.

Abstract:
When women don’t have access to public voices, their stories may be told through symbols and sewing, publicly viewed but understood only by an audience of intimates. My research builds upon my May 2016 residency in Assisi, Italy, and explores description through absence. Punto Assisi, an embroidery tradition predating the Renaissance, is still practised by women of Assisi. Uniquely, the subject matter is empty of detail. The negative space in Punto Assisi work can be seen as echoing the absence of information about the makers. Invisible and indispensable, women and their work have provided the fabric of human society throughout history, yet the names and faces of female artists and artisans are rarely documented. This embroidery style resonated with my interest in women's work and how ubiquitous and anonymous it is. Based on the concept of drawing with thread to manifest content, I explore description through absence, and honour the unknown makers of this art. Studio practice revealed insight into materiality, imagery, form design and palette. The haptic process of sewing gave insight into a universality of the experience of making, a connection crossing time, place and culture. The experience of the maker is highly individual and takes place in diverse contexts. The maker and their experience may be unknown, except to self, however the outcome, the product or the artwork may be indexical of a place, time or the maker, known or unknown. As such, unknown women makers have a presence in their works. The negative space in the uncoloured linen yields a presence and materiality that allows us to engage with what isn’t there. Absence is made material. Materiality, memory, narrative, and identity are themes emerging from this project. In my contemporary application of the style constraints yielded creative freedom. In absence, I found description.

Abstract:
Background: Aortic valve insufficiency (AI) at the time of left ventricular assist device (LVAD) insertion needs to be corrected, however there is little known about how to manage bioprosthetic valvular AI. Case presentation: A 55-year-old female with dilated cardiomyopathy who previously had a bioprosthetic aortic valve replacement needed a LVAD as a bridge to transplant. Her left ventricular ejection fraction was 10% and had mild to moderate transvalvular AI. She underwent a HeartWare HVAD insertion along with aortic valvular coaptation stitch repair (Park's stitch) to the bioprosthetic valve. Conclusion: Her AI improved to trivial with minimal ejection through the bioprosthetic valve. She was transplanted 6 months following the surgery. A Park's stitch to the bioprosthetic aortic valve with more than mild AI might be a good option for bridge to transplant patient.

This thesis has as its central theme the socio-assistance surveillance in Brazil, presented from the analysis of its conformation and its basis in RS. Its purpose is to contribute to the qualification of the social assistance policy through the constitution of theoreticalmethodological, technical-operative and ethico-political subsidies. The critical dialectical method supports the realization of mixed-focus research, which was developed through a combination of documental analysis and semi-structured interviews. The research sample comprises 11 of the 34 municipalities of the RMPA, where actions related to the activity were identified between 2014 and 2017. It is based on the historical contextualization and characterization of the aspects that set the socio-assistance surveillance, problematizing theoretical and ethical-political assumptions that are being established since its inclusion as a social assistance activity. Then, it sought to unveil how the socio-welfare surveillance has been operating at the municipal level, addressing processes such as data collection, construction of indicators, use of technology associated with information management, planning, institutional relations, diagnosis, monitoring and evaluation. Data on the constitution of the technical teams, the qualification and qualification of the workers and their working conditions are presented. The reflections also cover the subjects who are demanding the actions of social assistance and the way in which their participation in the different spaces and processes, including those related to socio-assistance surveillance, has taken place or not. It is concluded that this function is permeated by an ethical-political dimension, which contribution will depend primarily on the social direction that is printed. By a bias closely connected with conservatism, it contributes to the perpetuation of the condition of subalternity of the workers and users of SUAS. Already, from a critical perspective, it adds the possibility of contributing to the democratization of social assistance and to the construction of emancipatory social processes. Yet in the same way that social direction is decisive, attention is drawn to the fact that it does not consolidate immediately or in isolation. It is necessary to consider the disputes and contradictions that make public social policies either a place of resignation and resistance. However, considering the delimitations of time and space of the research, the historical counterfacts found give indications that, despite the significant advances, the operationalization of socio-assistance surveillance little reflects the adoption of a more critical social direction perspective.

This thesis aims at evaluating public policies to protect children and adolescents victims of family violence and the interface with the Rights Guarantee System (SGD) of Children and Adolescents in the city of Canela / RS. In view of these aspects, it will contribute to the implementation of public policies for children and adolescents whose rights have been violated in the family, as well as on preventive actions to situations of violence. The accompanying theoretical categories of reality were about: the historical background of social protection of children and adolescents in Brazil; intrafamily violence against children and adolescents; the Rights Guarantee System of children and adolescents; public policy and evaluation of public policies and social programs. a case study of formative evaluative nature with mixed approach, guided by critical dialectical method was performed. The mixed approach involved the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data, as well as their integration and joint discussion allowing them to be better exploited and used. The qualitative approach was dominant and sought the meaning of the DGS of Children and Adolescents in the political, ideological and cultural dimensions to social actors within it. It analyzed how these ideas materialize in the care of children and adolescents victims of family violence, and the perception of the families of interventions DGS actors of Children and Adolescents in their daily life. The mixed approach used concomitant inlaid design of the dominant model with a qualitative focus. In this design, the method that has lower priority is inserted in what is principal, to answer questions relevant to the research topic (SAMPIERI, 2013). Built up quantitative and qualitative indicators, as of guiding questions that signal aspects of reality studied. They were statistically worked with qualitative strategies to measure values, beliefs and thoughts that are expressed in the practice of the subject. The collection of quantitative data sought classification of violence committed against children and adolescents with the victims, perpetrators, manifestations of violence and forwarded protective measures. It was a cross sectional study with documentary source. To collect qualitative data were used to semi-structured interviews and focus group. The subjects of qualitative approach were the subjects that operationalize the DGS of Children and Adolescents, linked to public policy in the axes of the promotion, defense and social control, and the families served. The systematization and interpretation of qualitative data from interviews and focus groups were conducted through content analysis, defined by Bardin (1977). The results identify women as the main aggressors of their children, having preponderance negligence, which, according to the measures adopted, suggest criminalization of poverty and the institutionalization of children and adolescents, contrary to the legal provisions. The failure and the lack of structure of human, physical, administrative and cofinancing of the agencies and surveyed DGS operator services negatively impact the care. The precariousness of working conditions interfere with the implementation of the powers and duties of the organs, among these, diagnosis of infantojuvenil reality, formulation and implementation of public policies for children and adolescents in the promotion and defense of their rights. Some of the results obtained with this research hurt the primacy of care in the public sphere and the constitutional principle of absolute priority of children and adolescents. The presentation of the survey results will be carried out through seminars open to the community, especially to social subjects identified in this project: families, professionals and operators and governing bodies of the DGS of Children and Adolescents.

The purpose of this research is to review the reality of the articulation of Social Protection Network for children and adolescent victims of domestic violence and discussions on possible unblocks from characterization of bodies responsible for the guarantee of rights and the articulation between various equipments of protection. This articulation and the existence of public policies regarding this matter are key factors for the effective protection of the basic rights of children and adolescents. Violence against children and adolescents has been object of action of several Brazilian entities, and particularly in Campinas, this service has been carried out, almost entirely by nongovernmental organizations, thus exempting public authority responsibility with this demand. Under the light of a critical perspective, situations that pointed out contradictions between what is proposed in policies regarding domestic violence against children and adolescents and what actually happens in practice within social assistance services with the difficulties found by the professionals, were detected. To conduct this research, we were based upon the principles of Dialectic and Historical Materialism. We analyzed the records produced by the professionals taking part of DVACC Commission from 2011 to 2012, logbooks produced by the researcher in the same period and seven bulletins created by SISNOV (Violence Reporting System). By a constructive and interpretative process, we demarcated broad categories referring to reality elements that characterize or point out the disarticulation of the network, in the view of the professionals who are the key agents involved. Elaboration of such categories, demonstrates that these elements refer mainly to dimensions regarding to conflictive relationships between different services of the protection network and to disintegration of social assistance policies.

Abstract:
This work was dedicated to the study of the effects of haptic supplementation on postural stability of young and old adults during standing and sitting tasks. The question of whether haptic information provided by a mobile support improves stability similar to a fixed support has been rarely studied. The present work aimed to contribute to a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the potential stabilizing effect of haptic information provided by a cane-like support. The analysis focused on the center of pressure (COP). The results of the first two studies confirmed our general hypothesis about the effect of haptic supplementation independent of age and the mobility of the support. If sufficient resistance is provided by the support against body sway participants improved their postural stability. In the third study, we also manipulated visual inputs and the results suggested that a lack of vision can be compensated due to supplementation. In the fourth study, we also analyzed the inter-segmental coordination. The results suggested a better postural control due to supplementation whereas it does not affect the inter-segmental coordination. The fifth study aimed to determine whether haptic supplementation improves the system's robustness to sudden perturbations. The results suggested that only young participants reduce the time to the first COP correction due to supplementation while elderly correct the COP earlier than young adults, even without additional haptic information, and therefore do not benefit from haptic supplementation. Overall, the experimental results open the way for the application of the “mobile-stick” experimental paradigm to locomotion

Abstract:
The reduction in mortality from acute myocardial infarction in developed nations has resulted in a larger number of survivors with consequent left ventricular dysfunction. Management of these patients with ischaemic cardiomyopathy remains a challenge, since prognosis remains poor—and worse than that of non-ischaemic heart failure—despite appropriate use of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator and resynchronization devices. A large body of evidence accrued over the past three decades—predominantly retrospective in nature and observational in design—suggests that revascularization is superior to optimal medical therapy in patients with a large amount of ‘viable’ myocardium (i.e. dysfunctional myocardium at rest, which is not scar tissue and thus has, in theory, the potential to recover function after treatment). The global cardiology community has embraced this dogma, as many units worldwide place great emphasis upon the results of imaging tests (which aim to determine the presence and extent of myocardial ‘viability’) in guiding management strategy—specifically, whether to offer or deny a patient revascularization. This practice has been challenged recently by the results of the STICH trials, which suggested both lack of benefit from revascularization and no incremental benefit from viability testing. A number of imaging techniques exist for identifying viable myocardium. This chapter reviews the echocardiographic modalities that can be used to identify viable myocardium and compare these with other available techniques. We also analyse the results of the main STICH trial and the STICH viability sub-study and suggest an algorithm for integration of multi-modality imaging in the evaluation of myocardial viability.

Abstract:
A prime example of internally organized patterns is observed during sleep. The best studied of these is the sharp wave ripple in the hippocampus. Neuronal sequences during ripple events reach back to the past to replay snippets of waking experience at times when the brain is disengaged from the outside world. This process may consolidate episodic memories and stitch together discontiguous experiences, thereby giving rise to creative thoughts. In addition, neuronal assembly sequences during ripples also act as internalized, vicarious, trial-and-error mechanisms that can assist with subconscious optimization of future plans. Because the same neuronal substrate can perform both retrospective and prospective operations, it is not clear whether the traditional separation of postdiction (i.e., memory) from prediction (i.e., planning) is justified.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explores modes of processing silences evident in the imaginative and cultural traditions spread over the field of human inventiveness. Theological and philosophical perspectives contemplate silence as preceding and following creation, signalling two eternities encircling being, logocentricity, and discourse. As the latter are forms of temporal order and shaping, they signify a quintessential political process. Silence plays a central role in religious rituals: Communion, deference, or participation demarcate social roles, assuring stability and room for a partial retreat from everyday life, combining temporal and spatial categories. Historical narratives stitch together the hollows in their subject-matter through fictions, myths, and imaginaries. Any account of history or of biography involves silencing—through prioritizing and ranking, through forgetfulness or chance misplacement, through embarrassment or pride, through marginalizing certain groups, and through stifling alternative narratives, whether intentional or unnoticed. Residual evidence can assist scholarship in identifying those silences. Anthropology attempts to uncover the submergence of indigenous peoples by more recent cultures, and investigates the individual silences of those who cannot make the transition. Assumptions of linear development have silenced and contorted the complexities of lived reality, neutralizing underlying tensions. The silences of the past can be interrogated or refuted. The silences of the future are beyond reach and fragile. But both categories offer an ample platform on which to conduct struggles over policy.

This chapter elaborates on lacrosse's Baltimore establishment. It recognizes the trend of every goal, assist, and save in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) games having been made by players using sticks with plastic heads. While STX and Brine Sporting Goods were known for producing plastic lacrosse stick heads, STX had been approved for use by the NCAA before Brine lagged in visibility, sales, and quality. The chapter also covers the retirement of Navy coach Willis Bilderback following Virginia's victory in the NCAA 1972 championship. It acknowledges how the establishment that involved the Big Five, the nited States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, and the attitudes of the sports columnists at the Baltimore Sun was changing at a rapid pace, especially with the growing acceptance of Richie Moran and Cornell. Cornell's future with the freshman squad was taking shape in the spring of 1973.

Abstract:
This chapter is primarily concerned with Anglo-Latin prose: that is to say, Latin prose composed in Anglo-Saxon England between roughly 650 and 1050. It poses the question of the extent to which Anglo-Latin authors were aware of different stylistic registers, and how well they understood what diction was appropriate to either prose or verse. Using the example of Bede as a starting point, the chapter provides a list of those features of poetic diction that are found, in varying degrees, in the authors of Anglo-Latin prose. The seven criteria presented provide a crude measuring-stick against which to assess the poeticism of the principal authors of Anglo-Latin prose. The study of poeticism in Anglo-Latin prose, and in medieval Latin literature in general, is a subject that awaits exploration.

Kinematic analysis of legged robotic systems is our focus of study in this paper. The detailed forward and inverse kinematic analysis of the quadruped robots using the geometric method has been discussed in this paper. DH convention is used to assign frames to the link of a quadruped robot. The gait of the quadruped robot under study depends upon many things like type of motion, mobility constraint, terrain structure, etc. The configuration of a quadruped robot for one complete gait cycle is shown with the help of a stick diagram. Time variations of kinematic quantities like joint angles and angular velocity of the knee and hip have been studied. In the future, we have a plan to generate the optimal gait of a quadruped robot on uneven terrain.

Abstract:
Technology use in K-12 classrooms in this era of rapid high-tech change ranges from deep and meaningful technological immersion to an outright classroom ban on electronic devices. Attempting to mitigate this technological divide between students and teachers, school districts increasingly require professional development in applicable student technologies and teacher support resources. Unfortunately, the standards for continuing education requirements are broad, money is tight, and development efforts are often far less organized. As unfortunate, current issues and general information sharing dominate the professional learning communities (PLCs) or teacher learning communities (TLCs) originally designed to fulfill professional development requirements. These challenges render the occasional professional development initiative included in a PLC or TLC event, ineffective where the fragmented, uninteresting, and often poorly planned technology instruction very rarely seems to stick. Drawing on experience with military training and continuing education training, the authors propose a simple, inexpensive, and internally resourced means used by soldiers to train individual and collective military tasks, to assist elementary and secondary teachers to learn how emerging technology works, and more importantly, how to maximize its effective use in the classroom.

Abstract:
Since some years ago, the popularity of drawing has been increasing. There are a lot of existing tools to help people to improve their drawing [5]. Some tools provide human body images, so people can practice their human body drawing [6]. However, users cannot find the desirable pose images since these tools provide only a list of images but it cannot be sorted by pose. Thus, we proposed a tool in which users can move the joints of a stick figure to obtain the matching human pose image. Abstract:
Abstract Current slide drilling practices rely heavily on the intuition of the directional drillers to identify and correct drilling dysfunctions. Monitoring numerous dysfunctions simultaneously requires more complex analysis than can be done manually in real-time. There is also currently a big shift towards remote directional drilling. And as such, there is the need for a tool that can, in real-time, diagnose slide drilling dysfunctions accurately and provide advisory to both the remote directional drillers and rig crew. This paper proposes a method for a real-time slide drilling advisory system consisting of a probabilistic model which computes the likelihood that various slide drilling dysfunctions are occurring and an algorithm that determines what corrective action, if any, should be taken as a result. The dysfunction types monitored include buckling, high friction, poor toolface control, stick slip, and bit bounce. The model employs a Bayesian network which uses evidence derived from transient drilling data trends to infer the probability that any of the five considered dysfunctions are taking place. Data trends known to correlate with each dysfunction type are considered simultaneously to ensure that all dysfunction types are monitored continuously. As dysfunction probabilities are calculated, the algorithm cross references them with current drilling parameters and contextual data to determine necessary corrective actions. Corrective actions are output in the form of simple drilling parameter changes shown on a customizable graphical display. The dysfunction beliefs calculated were validated using historical data gathered from North America land drilling operations. For high friction and poor toolface control, known instances of dysfunction were identified using information in drilling logs and expert opinion and used for validation. The validation process resulted in a further refinement of the model. The proposed model along with graphical advisory displays were deployed on rigs in several North American land well drilling operations, as well as in the remote directional drilling center. While there is a lot of prior work that enables identification of rotary drilling dysfunctions in real-time, this is the first method that diagnoses slide drilling dysfunctions in real-time. The approach combines physics based models with a Bayesian network to improve accuracy and robustness in dysfunction detection. Additionally, it considers both real-time drilling data as well as drilling data from the past when diagnosing dysfunctions and facilitates remote directional drilling.

Abstract:
Drilling with PDC bits can cause severe torsional and axial oscillations. These oscillations are accompanied by periodic sticking of the bit followed by accelerated rotation. The so-called “stick-slip” increases bit wear and fatigue and causes premature failure of BHA and drillstring components. It is well known that these torsional oscillations are nonlinear and self-induced. The present study investigates the coupling between axial and torsional oscillations. The cutting process is based on the Detournay model, which provides for the effect of the bottomhole pressure and the local pore pressure. The axial stiffness of the drillstring is taken into account with the axial motion equations coupled with the torsional equations, in contrast to previous models where axial equations were considered independently. Axial oscillations are allowed to occur even when the bit is in the stick phase. The new model also includes bit “bouncing” when it loses contact with the bottomhole. The equations are solved by time integration. By results of the analysis of transient processes the spectral density is determined. The objective of the paper is to improve understanding of stick-slip oscillation nature and assess the contribution of parameters that influence their intensity. The study includes the effect of the rotor rpm, intrinsic specific energy of rock, number of PDC blades, wear flat length of blades, etc. Results of the study will help drillers to select and change drilling parameters more efficiently to reduce severe stick-slip oscillations.

The purpose of this work was to characterize the postagrogenic transformation of soil organic matter (SOM). For decision of this purpose the results of chemodestructive fractionation (CDF), the content of chlorophylls a and b , pheophetins and carotenoids, and Margalef's pigment index (PI) were used newly. Subjects of inquiry-humus horizons of soils of arable lands and fallow areas of Poshekhonsky district of the Yaroslavl region of the Russian Federation-were stitch together into two groups with differ in the type of land use. In one of them, the soils remained arable for 30-40 years (arable-arable group), in the other - the soils of arable land for the same time period were transferred to the fallow (arable-fallow group). It was found that increasing the soil water content of fallow plots compared to arable soils can lead: to improved livelihoods of the soil algocenoses (the value of PI Margalef decreased) to increase the carbon content of organic compounds, to increase the number legkomyslenno fraction in the organic component of soil, increased hydrolytic processes that reduce the content of carotenoids and chlorins (in particular, pheophytinand chlorophylls a and b) in SOM composition. Thus, results of CDF and content of chlorophylls a and b , pheophetins and carotenoids can be used to assess the postagrogenic transformation of SOM, and Margalef's PI-to characterize soil algocenosis.

Abstract:
Abstract Drill strings are complex dynamical systems with many uncertain parameters. The drill string interaction with the borehole produces a variety of undesired oscillations. The stickslip phenomenon is the extreme state of torsional vibrations, which causes the drill string to stop rotating and then spin free periodically. This non-uniform rotation may cause the wear of expensive equipment or even catastrophic failures in drill strings. Therefore, it is essential to study the drilling parameters in order to develop appropriate control approach for the suppression of the stick-slip vibration. However, the complexity of the drill string system poses several modeling and control challenges. The drill string model challenges include thermal, physical, electrical, and environmental influences on the stick-slip, simple enough to perform the analysis and control purposes. The control challenges include dealing with the complex dynamics of nonlinear friction, minimize nonlinear torque on the bit, and perform more robust during operating conditions. The control techniques are divided into two major approaches: passive and active control approaches. The passive control approaches include design sophisticated bits (with depth of cut control technology) to limit the reactive torque that might lead to the stick-slip, optimizing the drilling parameters, and using antivibration down hole tools. The active control approaches are on active anti-vibration control methods due to the improvements in the real-time measurement and control systems. Two of the most common active control techniques used in drill string system are proportional-derivative and sliding mode control methods. This paper presents an overview and a comparative study of the common control methods belonging to the common active control methods to mitigate the stick-slip phenomenon in drill string systems. The main objective is to assess the impact of the active control approaches to mitigate the stick-slip phenomenon. First, the common model for drillstring system is presented. Then, the study presents analyses of different drilling parameters, such as the weight on bit (WOB) and associated torque on bit (TOB) that define the bit aggressiveness, which are key in mitigating stick-slip vibration. These parameters have been considered as the comparison factors. Furthermore, this study details the design process of these controllers, and evaluates the performances of the different control systems to track the reference signal of bit velocity taking into account parametric uncertainties. Discussion and recommendation about the drilling parameters optimization are presented. This paper provides the necessary information needed for modeling and control of drillstring systems with minimum stick-slip vibrations. The results show that the adaptive sliding mode controller succeeded to eliminate the stick-slip phenomenon with better robustness to parametric uncertainties and weight on bit variations compared to the other controllers.

Abstract:
Abstract Cooling passages and the secondary air system of gas turbine components are prone to blockage from sand, dust and ash. The ability to model deposition accurately using CFD would allow the prediction of in-service performance degradation and the design of deposition-tolerant hardware. Predictions of deposition require accurate modelling of particle transport and wall interactions. Bounce stick models predict whether a particle will bounce, stick, or shatter upon impact and calculate rebound trajectories. Turbulent transport models allow the interaction of particles with near-wall turbulent structures to be predicted in RANS CFD solutions. This paper implements a Continuous Random Walk (CRW) transport model with a Discrete Elements Methods (DEM) based bounce stick model to predict deposition in commercial CFD software. The resulting spatial trends of deposition are compared with experimental data of particle deposition in an S-bend. The case considered is representative of the flow and metal conditions, particle size and loading distribution, and passage geometry seen in high pressure turbine blade cooling passages. Numerical predictions of deposition distribution show good qualitative agreement with experimental data. This validates the combined CRW/DEM approach for modelling the location of particulate deposition in gas turbine components. The approach is therefore suitable to assess and compare the susceptibility of components to particulate damage in industry. To the author’s knowledge, this is the first example in the open literature of experimentally-validated deposition trends in CFD. It was found that a deposit evolution and erosion model is essential to predict deposit height numerically. Particle tracking simulations without turbophoresis modelling showed significant differences in particle impact velocities and locations, justifying the use of the CRW model. The inclusion of the Magnus force produced considerable differences in quantitative and qualitative measures of deposition throughout the domain, demonstrating the importance of modelling collision-induced rotation in particle tracking. The performance of the DEM bounce stick model was favourable compared to energy-based alternatives which showed reduced accuracy in inertia-dominated regimes where multiple bounces occurred per particle. On average, eleven impacts were observed for each injected particle, reinforcing the dual importance of accurate bounce stick and turbulent transport models.

Abstract:
Rapid analysis of dynamic umbilical structures during the design phase requires a robust mathematical model of the component stresses due to static and alternating loads. The following discusses the validation of a model, through full scale testing, used to assess the stresses and strains present within steel tubes, in umbilical structures typically used in dynamic service in deep waters, such as found in the Gulf of Mexico and offshore West Coast of Africa. The validation focuses upon the complexity of the mathematical model and the influence of tension magnitude the stick-slip mechanism and the stress variation around the circumference of the tubes when under the influence of bending loads.

Abstract:
The paper describes the development of an instrumented test rig suitable to carry out vibration testing of the bladed segments of a turbine (belonging to a stator low pressure stage) in which the friction occurring at the contact of neighboring segments is used in service to damp the vibrations. The system is able to assign the desired preload to the segment and to measure the forces exerted in the contact and the relative displacements due to slipping. The main results that can be obtained concern the type of motion that takes place (stick/slip) and the effect of the interlocking on it, the friction coefficients, the contact tangential stiffness, and, more generally, the frequency response.

Abstract:
One of the limiting factors for maximizing drilling performance is drillstring vibration/dynamics. With the development of in-bit, at bit or near bit vibration monitoring sensors, it has been reported that while drilling with PDC bits in hard formations, stick-slip is mostly observed before other types of vibration. Commonly, stick slip is a mathematical problem that can be resolved using various technics (like analytical, numerical, etc.). To compliment this theoretical effort, experimental measurements are required to verify mathematical models under controlled conditions and assess their range of applicability. This is why a large number of laboratory setups around the world exist. A comprehensive literature research has shown that most of the known experimental setups are smaller than 10 m length and focused mainly on vertical wells. Building a setup that reproduces real hydrocarbon wells, including the drill string inertia and the delayed response between bit and surface, as well as the complex friction transfer process taking place between the wellbore and the drillstring, is not feasible. Thus, downscaling the typical drillstring parameters is necessary for the study of vibrations and vibration suppression at laboratory conditions. Vibration suppression modeling and validation require a particular, dedicated laboratory setup. The design of such an installation will be presented in the following paper. The newly proposed experimental setup will exceed all existing stick-slip or lateral vibration experimental setups on the market by size, while adding new features like axial movement (mimicking ROP or heave compensation) and curved sections. This new facility will be the first to integrate the hardware in the loop capabilities and can be connected with any drilling simulator that supports such an option. This design will account not only for torsional vibrations, but will also allow the string to move axially while RPM, WOB and flow rates may be directly linked to a drilling simulator. Because of its design, to resemble medium to small radius of curvature, the stick slip process can be captured and highlighted for a wide range of directional well situations. Once the range in operating conditions was defined, the equipment and mechanical components for the facility were selected and designed. The new facility will significantly improve our ability to reproduce the physics of drill string vibrations and will lead to better optimization of downhole vibration suppression. The incorporated link to drilling simulators can improve the development of the next generation of vibration suppressing models and hardware.

Abstract:
Contact, adhesion and stick-slip are major detrimental factors in the performance of micro electromechanical systems (MEMS). One method to reduce adhesion may be the incorporation of tailored rough surfaces, as suggested by the classical experiments of Fuller and Tabor some 3 decades ago. However, before embarking on a costly experimental approach, it is important to quantitatively assess the possible reduction in adhesion through such tailored surfaces. Past analysis has generally been confined to the adhesion of flat surfaces with a random roughness profile, or to Hertzian contact (without adhesion) of a cylindrical surface with a sinusoidal surface profile. In this work, we extend the analysis to the adhesion of cylindrical surfaces with any arbitrary roughness profile. The application may, for example, be in the contact of MEMS gears. The load-displacement and contact area profiles provide both qualitative and quantitative insight on how rough curved surfaces interact under adhesion conditions.
