Abstract:
Chronic lower respiratory disease afflicts over 5% of the United States population, leading to over 145,000 deaths annually. There remains a need for safer and more durable alternatives to lung transplant for patients who progress to end-stage lung disease. Portable or implantable gas oxygenators based on microfluidic technologies can address this need, though harnessing their potential depends on efficient and biocompatible design. Incorporating biomimetic materials into such devices can help replicate efficient native gas exchange function and additionally support cellular components. In thi

Abstract:
A novel cooling mechanism based on evaporation of thin liquid films is presented for thermal management of confined heat sources, such as microprocessor hotspots. The underlying idea involves utilization of thin nanoporous membranes for maintaining microscopically thin liquid films by capillary action, while providing a pathway for the vapor generated due to evaporation at the liquid-vapor interface. The vapor generated by evaporation is continuously removed by using a dry sweeping gas keeping the membrane outlet dry. This thesis presents a detailed theoretical, computational and experimental

Abstract:
A new process of combining gas injection with compression moulding was developed and studied in this research work. The process is called Gas Assisted Compression Moulding (or GasComp). The principle is based on the injection of nitrogen gas during a conventional compression moulding cycle. The flow of the material due to the compressive force of the press is assisted by the injection of gas into the centre of the molten material. The gas assists in the flow by coring out the material, reducing the weight by up to 45 percent and increasing the dimensional stability of the component. Novel glas

Although GAIM can greatly improve product quality, it is difficult to control gas penetration in a desired way. Therefore, mold designers must try and error repeatedly in order to obtain optimal processing conditions. Commercial CAE software can offer solutions to design products better and economically. But gas penetration characteristics are not appeared in 2.5D simulation, so 3D real elements are necessary to be used in simulation of gas-assisted injection molding. In this research, we study gas

The gas-assisted injection molding possesses the ability of hollowing the core of product, reducing the shrinkage and warpage so as to enhance the precision on part dimension. Using the gas-assisted technology on the wax injection molding is an innovative molding process. The applications on the wax injection combined with gas-assisted injection molding has no systematic studied yet, therefore, the p

Because of its advantages such as fast, light, low-cost and all-in-one. Nowadays products are getting thinner and larger. The most important thing for products is to prevent shrinkage and warpage, but it is not enough by using melt packing. So external gas molding has developed for solving these problems. In this study, we build a rectangular mold with high L/T (>100). Then we measured pressure by three pressure sensors which i

De-binding process takes the longest time in all process. As the volume of product is large, it will take doubling time on de-binding process. Utilizing the gas-assisted injection molding (GAIM) can let the product be hollow. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to reduce the time on de-binding process by combining with GAIM and MIM. One dimensional tube was utilized to individually investigate the effect of gas assisted injection m
