Abstract:
This study examined death and dying in assisted living (AL) and the various factors that influence these processes. The study is set in a 60-bed assisted living facility outside of Atlanta, Georgia. Data collection methods included participant observation and in-depth interviews with 28 residents and 6 staff. Data were analyzed using the grounded theory approach and focused on the 18 residents who were dying and/or died during the study period. Findings show that AL residents experience a variety of dying trajectories that vary in duration and shape; for the majority of residents, hospice is a

IntroductionOver the last decades a positive shift in attitudes towards legalisation of assisted dying (AD) (AD including euthanasia (EUT) and physician-assisted suicide (PAS)) have occurred in western Europe. Physicians are generally more negative than the general public toward legalisation. Medical students’ attitudes, as future practitioners, are important to assess when addressing this ethically complex issue.AimThe aim was to explore the attitudes among medical students at Örebro university, Sweden regarding assisted dying and their stance on the legalisation of assisted dying and to eval

Overview This volume is in three sections. Part 1: The literature review examines the available research into the views of the general public, health professionals, people with dementia and carers towards assisted dying in cases of dementia. It considers the evidence for factors associated with people’s views. Seventeen studies of variable quality met the criteria for the review. Health professionals appear to hold the most restrictive views on assisted dying; however opinions within each population group are divided and associated with factors such as age, ethnicity, gender and religion. Within the vast work that has been done on assisted suicide, this thesis examines how assisted suicide may be legalised in England and Wales if Parliament decides that is necessary in the future. The thesis takes as starting point the three eligibility criteria proposed by the Commission on Assisted Dying, a privately-funded Commission established in 2012 to review the status of the current law in England and Wales. The thesis focuses on the practical side of the assisted suicide debate, and hints that studying how legalisation could take place in the future may hinge on whether it can ever be

In 2015, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in the Carter decision that the prohibitions against physician-assisted dying, as outlined in section 241(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada, were unconstitutional as they violated an individual’s s.7 rights as outlined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Though the jurisprudence of this landmark decision and subsequent amendments to Canadian law are interesting in and of themselves, what is particularly interesting about Carter is the framework within which physician-assisted dying is conceptualized. The contemporary juridico-political and bioethical debate over physician assisted dying has emerged as one of the most divisive of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Commonly strained through Western conceptions of individual rights and near ubiquitous calls for the respect an abstractly defined human dignity, popular discourse on assisted dying tends to promote universal understandings of both human beings as well as ethical, legal, moral action. This thesis, however, holds these debates in abeyance preferring rather to explore the ways in which the possibility of an assisted death creat

In the medical context, it is an accepted (yet controversial) fact that doctors may sometimes legitimately hasten death when providing palliative care to dying patients. Or even, in relation to treatment decisions leading to withdrawal or omission, some doctors may choose death over life for certain patients and yet we seldom hear of doctors in the dock for intentional killing. Where complicity in suicide is concerned, it seems that the compassionate lay person has little reason to be fearful of criminal reprisal. The question, however, of whether a person suspected of complicity in suicide, o

Neurodegenerative diseases are not typically associated with a palliative care approach, despite poor quality of end-of-life care for people with these conditions. The first aim of this thesis was to understand the views of adults with neurodegenerative diseases on end-of-life care. Consequently, a metasynthesis was conducted. This review revealed that the care needs of people with neurodegenerative diseases are routinely not being met. It suggests that autonomy and a sense of control are important as well as contextualisation in decision-making. Furthermore, palliative care would be beneficia

Congestive heart failure has reached epidemic proportions in the United States with more than 5.7 million patients suffering from it annually ( 1). Due to the limited availability of donor hearts, patients in their late stage heart failure who may require cardiac transplantation are dying while waiting for a matched heart. Mechanical circulatory support devices (MCS), such as ventricular assist devices (VAD), are utilized as a bridge to transplantation, and recently as destination therapy for extending the life of these patients. A sadok or salakot is a farmer’s cherished possession, protecting him from the sun or rain. The Sadok, persisting up to the present, has many uses. Despite that this valuable economic activity needs sustainability, it is given little importance if not neglected, and seems to be a dying economic activity.
