Abstract:
This study examined death and dying in assisted living (AL) and the various factors that influence these processes. The study is set in a 60-bed assisted living facility outside of Atlanta, Georgia. Data collection methods included participant observation and in-depth interviews with 28 residents and 6 staff. Data were analyzed using the grounded theory approach and focused on the 18 residents who were dying and/or died during the study period. Findings show that AL residents experience a variety of dying trajectories that vary in duration and shape; for the majority of residents, hospice is a

Part 1: The literature review examines the available research into the views of the general public, health professionals, people with dementia and carers towards assisted dying in cases of dementia. It considers the evidence for factors associated with people’s views. Seventeen studies of variable quality met the criteria for the review. Health professionals appear to hold the most restrictive views on assisted dying; however opinions within each population group are divided and associated with factors such as age, ethnicity, gender and religion. Within the vast work that has been done on assisted suicide, this thesis examines how assisted suicide may be legalised in England and Wales if Parliament decides that is necessary in the future. The thesis takes as starting point the three eligibility criteria proposed by the Commission on Assisted Dying, a privately-funded Commission established in 2012 to review the status of the current law in England and Wales. The thesis focuses on the practical side of the assisted suicide debate, and hints that studying how legalisation could take place in the future may hinge on whether it can ever be

The contemporary juridico-political and bioethical debate over physician assisted dying has emerged as one of the most divisive of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Commonly strained through Western conceptions of individual rights and near ubiquitous calls for the respect an abstractly defined human dignity, popular discourse on assisted dying tends to promote universal understandings of both human beings as well as ethical, legal, moral action. In the medical context, it is an accepted (yet controversial) fact that doctors may sometimes legitimately hasten death when providing palliative care to dying patients. Or even, in relation to treatment decisions leading to withdrawal or omission, some doctors may choose death over life for certain patients and yet we seldom hear of doctors in the dock for intentional killing. Where complicity in suicide is concerned, it seems that the compassionate lay person has little reason to be fearful of criminal reprisal.
