Background: While the research literature exploring suicide bereavement has expanded in recent years, this has been primarily quantitative and has focused more on the bereavement experience of parents and siblings. The bereavement experience of young people affected through the suicide death of a friend remains under-conceptualized and not well understood. Aims: To develop an understanding of the experiences of young people bereaved by the suicide of a friend. Method: Ten young people participated in a pilot study with in-depth interviews to explore their suicide bereavement experiences. Narrative inquiry methodology was utilized to analyze the qualitative data. Results: The findings indicated multiple grief experiences caused by suicide. Four themes reported are meaning making, feeling guilt, risky coping behavior, and relating to friends following suicide loss. Conclusions: Implications include the need for increased awareness that friends of young people who die by suicide may have significant health and well-being challenges associated with bereavement, and that friends in these circumstances may not readily present at services for assistance.

Who are the people who maintain satisfying friendships? And, what are the behaviours that might explain why those people achieve high friendship satisfaction? We examined the associations between personality (self–reports and peer–reports) and friendship satisfaction (self–reports) among 434 students. We also examined whether role personality (how people act with their friends) and quantity and quality of social interactions using ecological momentary assessment mediate the associations between personality and friendship satisfaction. Extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and (low) neuroticism were associated with higher levels of friendship satisfaction. These associations could not be accounted for by individual differences in role personality. In addition, our results suggest that quantity of time spent with friends and quality of friend interactions (depth of conversation, self–disclosure and lack of emotion suppression), although associated with friendship satisfaction, do not account for the associations between trait personality and friendship satisfaction. Future research should examine other potential interpersonal processes that explain why some people are more satisfied with their friendships than others and the consequences of friendship satisfaction (e.g. for well–being). Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to examine the factors associated with alcohol consumption among Thai people by gender using the social determinants of health theoretical framework. Method Participants were Thai people aged 15 years or older. A total of 25,758 Thai people were selected through a stratified random sampling method. The study was a secondary analysis of a national cross-sectional study using the data from the Thailand Smoking and Drinking Behavior Survey 2014. Results Thai people were regular drinkers (13.69%). Regarding gender, 26.54% of men and 2.72% of women were regular drinkers. The risk factors for regular drinking among Thai men included family members and close friends consuming alcohol, being aged 25–44 years, living in Northern Thailand, being a skilled or unskilled worker, smoking, and income of 10,001–30,000 Thai baht/month (31 Thai Baht (THB)/U.S. dollars). Protective factors against alcohol consumption were living in Southern Thailand and being unemployed/a student. For women, the risk factors for regular drinking were family members and close friends drinking as well as smoking. Being married, living in a nonmunicipal area, holding a diploma or bachelor's degree, and being unemployed/a student were protective factors against alcohol drinking among women. Factors associated with alcohol consumption among Thai people vary by gender. Therefore, solving the drinking problems should consider both the risk and protective factors for men and women separately.

Introduction. This article presents a study that is devoted to the problem of relationship of a subject’s perceptions of other people and the phenomenon of the “world image” of a personality. This problem is relevant for humanities scholars in different countries of the world in conditions of exacerbation of intercultural and interethnic conflicts. Materials and Methods. An empirical study was carried out with the purpose of a comparative analysis of the features of the “world image” in people who differ in metaphorical perceptions of “friends” and “foes”. The subject of the research was the metaphors of “friend” and “foe”, the basic beliefs of the person and the types of the “world image” presented in narratives. The following methods were applied: metaphor content analysis, testing, narrative analysis, methods of mathematical statistics (quartiles, Kruskal – Wallis H-test, regression analysis). Results. The scientific novelty of the conducted study is the original development of parameters for the analysis of narrative “world images” of the personality. For the first time, interconnections of different types of metaphors of “friends” and “foes” as partners in communication and various parameters of the narrative “world image” of the subject are revealed. It is concluded that the attribution of positive or negative and ambivalent socio-psychological metaphorical characteristics for “friends” and “foes” is associated with a positive or ambivalent “world image” of the “conceptual” or “perceptual” type. Conclusion. The results of the study generally indicate that the subject’s metaphorical ideas about “friends” and “foes” affect the subject’s “world image”.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between online friend networks and the mental well-being (MWB) of adolescent males. Design/methodology/approach – The study used a mixed methods approach: first, questionnaire involving a validated MWB scale and questions regarding online friendship to 14-15 year old males (n=521); and second, focus group interviews (n=8) of between six and eight members three months later. Findings – Positive and negative associations were recorded between online friends and well-being. A positive relationship (p < 0.05) was found between the number of online friends and well-being scores. However, higher numbers of online friends were also associated with increases in negative online experiences namely, receiving embarrassing posts online or risky activities such as, chatting frequently with strangers. Online friends may influence perceptions of social support, status and belonging, each of which may contribute positively or negatively to well-being. However, by increasing these perceptions, online friends may cause additional distress when their presence does not provide tangible support during a crisis period. Originality/value – Online friends provide the context to which young males explore and negotiate the online world. To date, little mixed methods research has focused exclusively on the MWB of online friends. Policy makers could do well to consider the growing prominence of online social networking and produce targeted programmes to educate young people on the benefits and pitfalls of building large online “friend” networks.

Diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment relies on the presence of memory complaints. However, memory complaints are very frequent in healthy people. The objective of this study was to determine the severity and type of memory difficulties presented by elderly patients who seek for clinical help, as compared to the memory difficulties reported by subjects in the community. Assessment of subjective memory complaints was done with the subjective memory complaints scale (SMC). The mini-mental state examination was used for general cognitive evaluation and the geriatric depression scale for the assessment of depressive symptoms. Eight-hundred and seventy-one nondemented subjects older than 50 years were included. Participants in the clinical setting had a higher total SMC score (10.3±4.2) than those in the community (5.1±3.0). Item 3 of the SMC,Do you ever forget names of family members or friends?contributed significantly more to the variance of the total SMC score in the clinical sample (18%) as compared to the community sample (11%). Forgetting names of family members or friends plays an important role in subjective memory complaints in the clinical setting. This symptom is possibly perceived as particularly worrisome and likely drives people to seek for clinical help.

Lesbian and gay (LG) individuals strive to form stable relationships, and most of them are successful in doing so. Because successful relationships have benefits for psychological well-being, it is important to investigate factors that help people in same-sex relationships to achieve stable and committed relationships. The Investment Model (IM) proposes commitment to be predicted by satisfaction, quality of alternatives, and relationship investments. We extend this model by proposing two additional variables—cohabitation and social support. Cohabitation is a particularly important relationship marker for LG individuals, and its role on same-sex relationship commitment may be linked to the perception of greater support from close family and friends. In a cross-sectional study conducted in Portugal ( N = 534, 62.4% gay men and 37.6% lesbian women; Mage = 29.64 years, SD = 8.30), we tested a multigroup structural equation model linking cohabitation to perceived social support from close network members (family and friends) and to relationship commitment, via the IM variables. The results showed that cohabitation was positively associated with perceived social support from both parents and friends. Friend support and its association with satisfaction mediated the association between cohabitation and commitment for both gay men and lesbian women. However, there were differences between LG individuals. Support from parents was positively associated with satisfaction and negatively associated with perceived quality of alternative situations to the relationship, but only for gay men. Support from friends was positively associated with satisfaction for both lesbian women and gay men while also positively associated with relationship investments for gay men. These results are a relevant addition to the literature by showing the importance of cohabitation and social support from parents and friends for same-sex relationship outcomes, possibly acting as buffers against different sorts of negative experiences.

Objectives Research into the lived experiences of long-term care residents with dementia has identified perceived conflict, and its impact on sadness, as priorities for quality of life from the perspectives of people with dementia. However, whether and to what extent perceived conflict and sadness are associated has not been previously tested in this population. This study tested the associations between perceived conflicts with staff, family or friends and co-residents and their experience of sadness, and whether cognitive impairment or functional dependence modified these associations. Methods The study design was cross-sectional, correlational retrospective. Participants were 5001 residents of 613 long-term care facilities in Ontario, Canada with moderate and severe dementia. Clinical administrative data collected from 2012 to 2013 using the Resident Assessment Instrument 2.0 were used to measure the person's perception of conflicts with family/friends, staff, or co-residents, as well as verbal and non-verbal indicators of sadness. Hypotheses were tested using logistic regression, with cluster correction. Results Sadness (adjusting for age, sex, family/friend contact, pain, cognitive impairment, and functional dependence) was positively associated with perceived conflicts with family or friends (OR 1.91; 95% CI 1.26–2.88; p = 0.002) and staff (OR 1.51; 95% CI 1.07–2.13; p = 0.020). These associations did not differ depending on the level of cognitive impairment or functional dependence. The association between co-resident conflict and sadness was statistically significant for people with moderate (OR 2.02; 95% CI 1.45–2.82; p < 0.001) but not for those with severe dementia (OR 1.18; 95% CI 0.72–1.91; p = 0.511). Conclusion Long-term care residents with dementia who perceive conflict with others require support to maintain high quality relationships, particularly with family and friends. Future research should rigorously assess the modifiability of perceived conflict for people with moderate and severe dementia, and whether interventions to ameliorate perceived conflict result in decreased sadness and improved quality of life.

Background: The negative health results associated with the family caregivers of older people can be alleviated with social support, which is considered a valuable resource. Hence, the factors contributing to social support need to be understood. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the social support associated with the family caregivers of older people. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 231 family caregivers of older people conveniently selected from two districts in Kelantan, a state in the North-East Region of Peninsular Malaysia. Data were gathered between June to December 2021 using a Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data in frequencies and percentages. Independent t-test and one-way analysis of variance were used to examine correlations among variables. Results: The mean scores of social support for family caregivers were significantly higher among their family (Mean ± SD; 5.44 ± 0.969) and other important people (5.25 ± 1.123) compared to their friends (4.84 ± 1.094). Caregivers’ gender and duration of caregiving were significant factors associated with social support (p <0.05). Conclusions: The family caregivers received maximum support from their family and other important people, but they were less supported by their friends. This study also observed that the perceived social support of the caregivers of older people was affected by several factors, such as gender and duration of caregiving. This finding gives nurses and other healthcare workers the basic information they need to enhance nursing interventions and promote social support among those who care for older people, which can positively impact caregiving.

Abstract This paper discusses the people and events that influenced my career and the lessons I learnt along the way. In this essay I attempt to pass these lessons on to others. Born and growing up in Cape Town, from my earliest recollections at the age of four I have wanted to be associated with fish and the sea. My first mentor was the Professor of Zoology at the University of Cape Town, who gave me the opportunity to go to sea on the University research ship, and later to join the International Indian Ocean Expedition where I met others who influenced me. Then a postdoctoral fellowship in Nova Scotia led me to meet Ken Mann, a SCOR working group, and a series of wonderful colleagues and friends. The contribution of each of these to my development is discussed, along with the lessons learned. The friends I have made on my journey in marine science and my academic family of former students have enriched my life enormously and if I had my life again, I would have it no other way.

My thesis work developed out of a specific book: How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. The book is one of the best-selling self-help books of all time. Every part of the book was material for my project: The words. The author. The style. The physical object. I also use myself, the reader as a material. These materials can be manipulated like paint or clay or wood. But materials have limitations and resistances. That's what makes the whole thing interesting. In fact, it was my material resistances - my shyness, my nervousness - which led me to begin working with How to Win Friends and Influence People in the first place. My thesis project, How to Win Friends and Influence People is an animation and series of sculptural props that examines Dale Carnegie's book. The written thesis will explore notions of performance, humor, anxiety, and the self as they appear in this project and my previous work completed here at MIT. It will also explore my art in more general way. What is my process as an artist? How do I make decisions? Who do I make them for? And here it is. I hope you like it.

Secrecy is a growing topic of interest in research, but little research has been done on adolescents keeping secrets from their friends. The purpose of this study was to find out if keeping secrets from friends was related to elevated depression and more behavior problems. The data in this study were obtained from 197 adolescents who were interviewed the summer after their 6th (n = 182, M age = 12.4, SD = 1.01) grade school year in southern Louisiana. This sample was 50.8% female, and the majority of the adolescents self-identified themselves as being white, non-Hispanic (47.7%) or African American (46.7%), while few self-identified themselves as being of other ethnicities (6.1%). Results showed that keeping secrets from friends is associated with higher levels of depression but not with more behavior problems. Keeping secrets from friends accounted for unique variance in depression after controlling for keeping secrets from parents. Secrets from friends accounted for the association between low friendship quality and depression. The link between secrets from friends, depression and behavior problem was not moderated by friendship quality and depression.

The rise in mental health issues in children and adolescents in the U.K has increased the need for evidence based therapeutic interventions. The focus of the research in this thesis was to contribute towards the growing evidence base for effective cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) interventions suitable for young people which could be delivered in school settings. This research specifically aimed to evaluate a manual based intervention to address anxiety in young people. The 'FRIENDS for Youth' (Barrett 1998) program was chosen for its existing success in Australia and its strong roots in CBTtheory. The underlying theory behind CBT links back to Bandura's (1986) Social Cognitive Theory. This theory outlines that human behaviour is determined by the reciprocal interaction of three factors; cognitive, behaviour and the environment. Social Cognitive Theory places a strong emphasis on cognition and suggests that an understanding of the cognitive process involved can lead to behaviour being predicted, understood and changed. Bandura (1986) postulated that individuals hold a self-system that provides them with a degree of control over their own thoughts, feelings and actions. Bandura theorised that it was this self-system that contained the cognitive and affective structures and allowed for individuals to learn through observation, plan alternative strategies, regulate and change behaviour and engage in self reflection. Based on this theory, CBT follows the idea that understanding, recognising and restructuring individual cognitions can lead to changing behaviours. Bandura (1986) also felt self reflection was an important component in behaviour change as it led people to evaluate their experiences and alter their own thought processes. These self evaluations include perceptions of self efficacy Le. a person's beliefs about personal competence. Beliefs of efficacy verify the level of effort a person will make in a difficult situation, how long they will persist in overcoming barriers and their level of resilience in facing adverse situations. Greater levels of self efficacy predict greater levels of effort, persistence and resilience. Social cognitive theory also suggeststhat perceived self efficacy plays a central role in anxiety arousal. In threatening situations, perceived coping inefficacy results in high levels of anxiety and distress with anxiety arousal and avoidant behaviour being co-effects of the perceived inefficacy (Bandura, 1989). Even more interesting and indeed of relevance to the research being proposed is Bandura's (1989) notion that efficacy beliefs also influence individual's thoughts processes and emotional reactions. Low levels of self efficacy suggest there is a belief that things are tougher than they actually are which in turn fosters feelings of stress, anxiety and depression which in turn narrows the ability to problem solve. The most effective way to develop self efficacy is to create a strong sense of efficacy through mastery of experiences which are structured to build coping skills and instil beliefs that one can have some control over the situation. Smith, Arkoff & Wright (1989) reported that perceived efficacy predicted improvements in performance and reduced anxiety in his sample of highly anxious students. Bandura, Adams & Beyer (1977) suggested that the impact of therapy upon behaviour change is mediated by the extent to which the individuals acquire the belief they can perform the behaviours to which the therapy is orientated. With that in mind, the focus of this research is to assess the effects, experience and effectiveness ofthe FRIENDS program when used as a targeted therapeutic intervention in a secondary school for a small group of self selected young people with anxiety. Paper 1 focuses on the summative evaluation, looking at the outcome effects the FRIENDS program has on participant's levels of anxiety, self efficacy and well being whilst Paper 2 focuses on the more formative evaluation. This paper looks at the young people's lived experience of the intervention and the meanings and value they placed upon the experience. Together, the results of the research from these two papers allows for an overall evaluation of the FRIENDS program to be made which builds upon the earlier work of Barrett (1998) and the existing success of the FRIENDS program as demonstrated in the Australian literature. The findings of this research not only extend the evidence base towards the impact FRIENDShas on its users but also considers the social validity of the program through examining the users' perceptions of the program. Furthermore, the findings contribute towards discussion regarding the impact the program has and the value of the intervention as a therapeutic intervention which could be used in secondary schools in the U.K. The results of this study found significant reductions in anxiety levels using pre- and postcomparisons. Greatest differences were found for social anxiety, generalised anxiety and oeD. Lasting changes to anxiety levels were maintained at follow up. An increase in social self efficacy was also found although these changes were not found to be significant. No significant changes were found for well being. Significant themes found from the qualitative analysis show that the young people placed value upon the friendships they formed during the intervention, the positive changes they saw in themselves which they attributed to the FRIENDSprogram and the usefulness of the new skills they developed as part of the program. The results of the focus group suggested a high social validity of the FRIENDS program from the participant's direct experience. Together, these findings provide evidence of a wider impact of success that was measured by the outcomes alone in paper 1.The research outlined in this thesis discusses the findings of the two phase evaluation and gives consideration to future direction and areas for further research. Lastly, questions are raised about the role of the educational psychologist and the delivery of therapeutic interventions. This research will be of benefit to educational psychologists and other professionals working with children and young people as a way of raising their awareness of mental health in young people and strengthening the evidence base for FRIENDSas a therapeutic program to be used in practice. Although this research was very small scaled, the findings have made a start at outlining some of the benefits for the use of the FRIENDS program in schools to reduce anxiety. These findings could also be used to contribute towards the development of policy and practice regarding the way anxiety is managed within schools and the accessibility of therapeutic type interventions available to school settings.

INTRODUCTION: Older people are a vulnerable population for falls and the risk may be increased by unfamiliar hospital environments. Using a mixed method ergonomic approach to acknowledge the complexity of contemporary hospital environments, this thesis aims to explore the associations between patient characteristics and environmental causal factors of in-patient falls for older people. METHODS: A series of three exploratory pilot studies were carried out, followed by two large scale research projects using nationally collected data from patient incident reports and overnight bedrail audits. The mixed method approach included; secondary data analysis, interviews, surveys, and audits. MAIN FINDINGS: 1. Patients in care of older people wards have different characteristics compared to same age peers in other wards, with higher levels of frailty and confusion. 2. Bedrail use was found to rise with increasing level of confusion which is against general guidance. Staff rationales for bedrail use suggested an underlying intent to restrain confused patients. 3. Up to 92% of patients falls were reported to be un-witnessed. This may be explained by only 24% of patient beds being visible from nursing stations. 4. There were significant differences found in the fall locations between patients who were described as frail and those who were described as confused. CONCLUSION: Patients in care of older people wards have a different set of characteristics compared to same age peers in other wards. This suggests that they will have different requirements for fall prevention in terms of layout, visibility, equipment use and facilitating independence. Further research should focus on designing wards for care of older people patients which improve visibility, layout and way-finding to toilets and investigate whether these design improvements will facilitate independent movement and prevent patient falls.

This is an ex post facto study with a retrospective and cross sectional design, consisting of a random sample of 1,143 participants (538 men and 605 women), age range 17-56 or more. The measures used involved the Escala de estrés y ansiedad delincuencial, and the Cuestionario de salud general. Results revealed that approximately three fourths of the simple considered that the criminal violence context affected their mental health. Differences between men and women were established. Women and urban residents exhibited a greater number of stress symptoms and criminal anxiety. Recommendations for future studies are suggested.El presente es un estudio expos facto con un diseño retrospectivo y transeccional, que consideró una muestra probabilística de 1,143 personas (538 hombres y 605 mujeres) con un rango de edad entre 17 y 56 años o más. Los instrumentos de medida fueron la Escala de estrés y ansiedad delincuencial, y el Cuestionario de salud general. Los resultados revelaron que aproximadamente las tres cuartas partes de la muestra consideró que el contexto de violencia delincuencial afectó su salud mental. Existen diferencias entre hombres y mujeres. Las mujeres y los residentes urbanos presentaron mayor número de síntomas de estrés y ansiedad delincuencial. Se sugieren recomendaciones para estudios futuros.

Interpersonal violence is a persistent social problem which continues to present a challenge to service providers to develop treatment to target offenders' needs and to reduce recidivism. By exploring how an individual's characteristic interpersonal style relates to offending behaviour we can begin to understand more about the motivations and functions of violent behaviour. Employing a correlational design, this thesis applied an interpersonal theoretical framework to interpersonally violent behaviour, explored the relationship between trait aggressiveness and state violence, and explored differences in interpersonal style amongst groups of violent offenders and non-offenders. Three samples of British males were generated (336 non-offenders, 120 prisoners with convictions for violent offences, 56 mentally disordered violent offenders), all of whom completed a series of self-report questionnaires; Inventory of Interpersonal Problems-Circumplex Scales (IIP-C), Aggression Questionnaire (AQ), General Perceived Self-Efficacy, Inventory of Interpersonal Reactivity Index, Psychological Estrangement. Using the IIP-C, a circumplex structure was generated within which to explore differences in interpersonal style between groups and to locate violent behaviour. Offender groups reported the highest levels of interpersonal problems on the 'Vindictive/Self-Centred' and 'Cold/Distant' IIP-C scales, and 'Physical aggression' and 'Hostility' scales of the AQ. Three IIP-C scales discriminated between groups of offenders with differing histories of interpersonally violent offences, indicative of some level of homogeneity of interpersonal style within offence-related groups. Exploration of the inter-relationships between the IIP-C and the AQ indicated that aggressive behaviour serves an implicit communicative function, related to a range of interpersonal styles. Results indicate that the Interpersonal Circumplex is a useful model for contributing to our understanding of interpersonally violent behaviour. Furthermore, the self-reported higher levels of both trait aggression and specific interpersonal problems amongst some violent offenders suggest that a focus on interpersonal style in conjunction with criminogenic need might be a complementary approach to the treatment of violent offenders.

AbstractResearch on social networks of immigrants and their descendants usually starts from the distinction between ‘ethnic’ ties and ties to members of the population without migration background. In migration studies ‘ethnic’ ties are repeatedly associated with ‘strong ties’, whereas ‘weak ties’ – that are found to be essential for the access to jobs in the wider society – are associated with contacts to members of the ‘majority population’. Building on existing criticism of this narrowing dichotomy and looking at upward social mobility careers of immigrants’ descendants we question this group-related understanding of weak and strong ties. Examining professional trajectories of immigrants’ descendants in Germany, this chapter suggests shifting the focus to occupational contexts in order to understand better how and why different types of social ties can play an important role for their professional mobility. We argue that both the quality of ties and their ‘ethnic dimension’ are dependent on the occupational context with its specific institutionalized modes of access and recruitment. Moreover, different forms of ‘ethnic’ or ‘cross-ethnic’ ties develop a changing significance in the course of a career and over time; this makes it necessary to also look at the dynamics in careers and the occupational contexts. The chapter compares the role of social ties for the inclusion into two occupational fields: law and public administration. It draws on interviews with (mainly Turkish) immigrants’ descendants working in these sectors. While in the law sector mainly ‘weak ties’, which had been built up during university studies and in the course of later careers, proved important, in public administration ‘strong ties’ to relatives and friends were most crucial for the access to jobs. In both sectors, we can observe that ties to ‘co-ethnics’ become increasingly relevant for professional careers as people of immigrant descent gradually achieve higher positions.

Alcohol and cannabis are commonly used by U.S. college students and often used simultaneously (simultaneous alcohol and marijuana [SAM] use). Better understanding situations in which SAM use is planned or unplanned and related consequences of these distinct SAM use events will inform prevention and intervention efforts. We extended previous daily-level research by examining motives and contexts (social, physical) as indicators of unplanned vs. planned SAM use occasions, as well as by parsing specific plans for alcohol use and for cannabis use on SAM use occasions. Specifically, we examined: unplanned alcohol and marijuana (UAM) use, planned mono-substance (either alcohol or cannabis but not both) use (MSU), and planned SAM use. College student SAM users (N=341; 53% women) were recruited from three U.S. universities and completed 56 days of data collection with five repeated surveys each day. Most SAM use occasions were planned (73% of occasions), followed by planned MSU (18%), and by UAM use (10%). Two-level generalized linear mixed-effects models were conducted to account for nesting of occasions within persons and the three-category nominal outcome. All models included age, sex, recruitment site (school), weekend, and other drug use as covariates. At the within-person level, using for social or enhancement reasons was related to higher odds of planned SAM use (vs. UAM use). These reasons for use were also related to planned SAM use when compared to planned MSU, whereas using because it was offered or to cope was related to lower odds of planned SAM use (vs. planned MSU). Using at home or alone was linked to lower odds of planned SAM use (vs. UAM use), and using at a party, friend’s place, with friends, with more intoxicated people, and with more people using cannabis was associated with higher odds of planned SAM use. An identical pattern was found when comparing planned SAM use to planned MSU. When disaggregating “planned MSU” into planned alcohol use-unplanned cannabis use vs. planned cannabis use-unplanned alcohol use, using for social or enhancement reasons was related to higher odds of planned alcohol-only use. Likewise, using at a party, with friends, with strangers/acquaintances, with more intoxicated people, and with more people using cannabis were related to higher odds of planned alcohol-only use. Using at home or alone was linked to lower odds of planned alcohol-only use. Findings suggest that interventions should target days when college students are planning for SAM use. Mobile health interventions could also focus on higher risk motives (e.g., social) and contexts (e.g., party) that were indicators of planned SAM use, as well as target individuals who endorse using substances to cope or because substances were offered, with these latter individuals being at risk for unplanned SAM use when only MSU was originally planned. Specifically, ecological momentary interventions and just-in-time adaptive interventions could send protective behavioral strategies to individuals endorsing intentions for use and high-risk motives or contexts to reduce the heavy alcohol and cannabis consumption that was associated with planned SAM use.

Protective behavioral strategies for marijuana (PBSM) are intended to reduce harms associated with use of marijuana. Harms may vary based on the physical and social contexts in which individuals use marijuana resulting in people employing PBSM differentially across contexts. We examined where and with whom young adults are likely to employ PBSM when using marijuana. In Fall 2021, we conducted an online survey with 506 young adults who were current users of marijuana and lived in the U.S. (N=506; 55.6% female, 62.6% White). Participants were evenly distributed across states according to marijuana policy (33% each in recreational, medicinal, or neither). Participants rated their likelihood (‘not at all,’ ‘somewhat,’ or ‘extremely/very likely’) to engage in 8 strategies derived from the PBSM Scale that focused on using marijuana only with trusted peers, minimizing intoxication, and driving a vehicle after using marijuana. Participants indicated their likelihood to use each strategy in 4 physical contexts (own home, friend’s home, someone else’s home, public location) and 3 social contexts (alone, one or few closest friends, large group). We conducted generalized logit mixed models with a multinomial dependent variable, treating the respondent as a random effect, to assess differences in likelihood to use PBSM across physical and social contexts. Separate models were run for each PBSM by physical (referent: at own home) and social (referent: alone) context. Physical context: Odds of being ‘somewhat likely’ or ‘extremely likely’ (referent: ‘not at all likely’) to ‘use marijuana only among trusted peers’ were lower when using marijuana at someone else’s home or in a public location compared to their own home. Odds of being ‘somewhat likely’ or ‘extremely likely’ (referent: ‘not at all likely’) to ‘use a little marijuana and then wait to see how you feel before using more,’ ‘avoid mixing marijuana with other drugs,’ and ‘avoid driving a car after using marijuana’ were lower when using marijuana in public settings compared to their own home. Odds of being ‘somewhat likely’ (referent: ‘not at all likely’) to ‘limit the amount of marijuana they use in one setting’ were lower when using marijuana in public settings compared to their own home. Social context: Odds of being ‘somewhat likely’ (referent: ‘not at all likely’) to ‘avoid mixing marijuana with other alcohol’ were greater when using marijuana with a few close friends than alone. Odds of being ‘extremely likely’ (referent: ‘not at all likely’) to ‘use a little marijuana and then wait to see how you feel before using more’ and ‘avoid driving a car after using marijuana’ were lower when using marijuana at an event with a large number of people compared to alone. Our findings suggest that people differentially utilize PBSM based on the physical and social contexts in which they are using marijuana. People may be less likely to engage in PBSM in public locations and large groups of people compared to when they use marijuana at their home or alone. Interventions for young adult marijuana use should consider the context of use when providing behavioral intervention strategies.

Epidemiological surveys consistently report that cannabis use prevalence peaks during the college years. College students who use cannabis do so in a variety of contexts (e.g., at a party, when experiencing craving, for physical pain). Cannabis use is associated with risk for experiencing undesirable consequences. Protective Behavioral Strategies (PBS) are behaviors one can engage in to reduce use or to mitigate the risk of experiencing unwanted consequences. However, research has yet to explore which strategies are most effective in which specific contexts of use. It is likely that a strategy that works well to reduce the risk of consequences in one context may not work well in another context. We aimed to identify unobserved patterns of cannabis use contexts in a sample of college students, and examined whether these patterns of cannabis use contexts differed in cannabis use frequency, cannabis-related negative consequences (both at the item level and the cumulative number of consequences), and PBS use (also examined at the item and cumulative levels). Using Latent Profile Analysis of self-reported data, we identified three latent profiles of cannabis users. Profile 1 (Social Use Profile; n =100) reported use cannabis in predominantly social or uplifting contexts, profile 2 (Physical & Emotional Pain Profile; n =109) reported use primarily in the contexts of relieving physical and emotional pain, and profile 3 (All Contexts Profile, n =56) reported frequent use in all contexts assessed. The Social Use Profile was associated with the least frequent cannabis use, the most PBS use, and fewest consequences compared to the other profiles. The Physical and Emotional Pain Profile was associated with moderate levels of cannabis use, consequences, and PBS use. The All Contexts Profile was associated with the most frequent cannabis use in all contexts. This included the contexts that were least associated with the Social Use Profile and the Physical & Emotional Pain Profile, which were related to a craving to use cannabis and using cannabis in response to a fight with friends, family members, or partners. The All Contexts Profile was also associated with the most cannabis-related consequences, and the lowest level of PBS use. Beyond the examination of overall indices of cannabis use, consequences, and PBS use, our data indicated that each profile was associated with the experience of specific consequences of use in differing frequencies and the use of certain PBS to a differing degree across profiles. This study provides preliminary evidence that the contexts in which people use cannabis may be associated with use level, number of consequences experienced, and PBS use. Future prevention and intervention efforts may consider identifying those whose use pattern is consistent with profiles identified in this study that carry greater risk of cannabis-related consequences. This would include screening for use in many different contexts (All Contexts use pattern) or for use primarily when in physical or emotional pain (Physical & Emotional Pain use pattern), as these use profiles carry greater risk for frequent use, experiencing more consequences, and engaging in fewer protective strategies.

Introduction:The lack of engagement and the shortage of motivation and drive, also referred to as apathy, negatively impacts the effectiveness and adherence to treatment and the general well-being of people with neurocognitive disorders (NCDs), such as dementia. Methodology:The hypothesis raised states that the engagement of people with dementia during their non-invasive treatments for NCDs is affected by the noisy source levels and negative auditory stimuli present within environmental treatment settings. An online survey was conducted with the study objectives to assess 1) the engagement levels of dementia patients while interacting with others at home versus in therapy facilities, 2) the emotions perceived when interacting with people at home compared to therapy sessions, 3) the perceived loudness of the environment at home versus in therapy facilities, and 4) which source sounds negatively impact the patients at home and during therapy sessions. A purposive sampling (n=62) targeting relatives, friends, and caregivers of dementia patients was conducted via online community forums in the DACH region. Moreover, a recording session was conducted in a psychotherapist’s office to verify the answer tothe questionnaire on the noise sources perceived in therapy facilities. Results and Discussion:The raised hypothesis that disruptive auditory stimuli and noise levels influence the engagement levels of demented individuals during treatment is confirmed as the engagement is affected by the perceived noise disruptions when comparing perceived noise levels and engagement at home to those in treatment facilities.Significant statistical results were found between the lower engagement of demented individuals when interacting with people during therapy sessions compared to higher engagement in-home interactions. Furthermore, negatively perceived sound sources can be found in both therapy facilities and home settings. The noise sound sources identified, such as human voices, household appliances and household noises, while recording inthe psychotherapist’s office align with the questionnaire responses received on this topic. The findings indicate that the perceived heightened noise levels in therapy facilities stand in correlation with the lowered engagement rate perceived during the therapy session compared to the lower noise level and higher engagement encountered when demented individuals interact at home. Conclusion:If the identified noise elements are masked or replaced by other auditory stimuli that promote a soothing soundscape, the original disturbances encountered during therapy and the lack of engagement can possibly be minimized. Further studies need to be conducted in the prototyping of a noise intervention tool to analyze the impact on lack of engagement through noise disturbances.Keywords. Companies in the manufacturing industry are facing a variety of challenges such as increasing product complexity and variety and the accompanying complexity of production processes. The developments for more sustainability and optimized use of resources are additional societal requirements. Consequently, the demands of efficient solutions in quality management are also increasing. Innovative processes are needed to meet industrial challenges. Therefore, enhanced availability of data in production offers an opportunity. Hence, the combination of associated process and manufacturing knowledge and data availability creates the possibility to improve product- and process-related quality as well as the use of resources. As a consequence, machine learning methods are used to utilize and evaluate the collected data volumes. Their application in quality control enables the operation of smart solutions like the detection of anomalies in both product and process quality. However, there is no standardized algorithm to implement in any desired production environment. Conclusively, the application of specific algorithms is highly dependent on the desired project output, human factors and the underlying infrastructure. As main manufacturing branch, mass production combines the potential benefits of machine learning applications and their occurring challenges for product and process and monitoring. Existing reporting tools like the statistical process control (SPC) enhance process owners to continuously monitor manufactured products and processes. Nonetheless, the execution of the SPC is naturally reactive, once the monitored products have been already produced. Thus, process owners require a proactive, user friendly and interactive forecast application regarding their product and process quality.Predictive quality control is one way of improving product- and process-related quality while taking advantage of greater data availability. It represents an implementation of quality control in conjunction with data-driven quality forecasting. This application enables companies to conduct data-driven forecasts of product- and process-related quality. The aim is to use machine predictions as a basis for decision-making for action measures to be derived by the user. On the basis of the large amounts of data and algorithmic evaluation, measures can be derived by process and utilization investigations. Among other things, future events with influence on the quality can be controlled in an improved way. In quality management, decision-making processes are based on extensive data collection and analysis. Predictive quality should be seen as a supplement to conventional methods, e.g. SPC.Convenient implementation methods are key to achieve effective quality monitoring in terms of product and process control. For this reason, automated machine learning can be used to ease the realization of forecasting methods. Specifically, autoregressive models are robust and optimized statistical methods which fit to both forecasts of product and process quality. An observed evaluation metric like the mean absolute error for the next ten forecast items has been decreased by more than 50% from 0.141 to 0.66 with an underlying data range from 0.38 to 1.998. Since this calculation was processed including a univariate feature vector, improvements can be achieved by adding connected features, i.e. sensor data, for a higher accuracy in the forecasting results.

Natural agricultural waste fibers like coconut fiber, groundnut shell, and sugarcane fiber are explored as eco-friendly alternatives for sound insulation to combat noise pollution. The research investigates their application as sustainable sound-absorbing materials, determining sound absorption coefficients based on the ISO 10534-2 standard. Results indicate coefficients ranging from 0.55 to 0.95 within the 160 Hz to 5000 Hz frequency range. Sugarcane fiber exhibited the most favorable coefficients, reaching 0.95 at 1600 Hz and 0.46 at 800 Hz, followed by coconut fiber with a range of 0.84 at 4000 Hz to 0.57 at 160 Hz. This research highlights the potential of agricultural waste fibers in addressing environmental concerns associated with agricultural waste while providing sustainable solutions for sound absorption.

Homeliness is associated with something friendly and well-known. The idea of homeliness in architecture and urban planning does not mean only people-friendly space. First of all, it means the city that is familiar to the citizens, what cannot be realized without specific conditions - creation of the feeling of being part of the community, possession and identity. The antithesis of the city - agricultural landscape - seems to be the perfect basis for them. Can the idea of homeliness be created based on the relationship between the town and its opposition? How can the "lost" agricultural landscape" work as a catalyst of the idea of homeliness and community integration?
In the article, there will be the attempt of answer to these questions given. New ideas, such Agrarian Urbanism or Urban Horticulture will be presented and discussed. Throughout the world, research is on-going to develop techniques for assimilating agriculture into an urbanism acceptable to the expectations of modern life. The ability to grow food has implications for communities on multiple levels: from food security and health issues, to ensuring a local economy and to the social benefits of a productive activity in which all members of a community can engage. In Agrarian Urbanism a whole society is involved with the growing of food: people can have gardens instead of yards, or community gardens and even window boxes if they live in an apartment. Can these ideas create new ways of thinking about the contemporary city?

Migration, while certainly not new, is on the increase all over the world. Indeed, the United Nations estimates that from 1990 to 2000 alone, the number of people who left their countries of origin rose by 14 percent, from 154 million to 175 million. The phenomenon is not only growing, but is having an impact on the economies of sending countries and receiving countries alike. The effect is visible in the labor market, income distribution, poverty, economic growth, and such areas as gender, health, education and human rights. In particular, remittances (money that immigrants send to friends or family in their countries of origin) have been growing rapidly throughout the world since the mid-1990s. Official figures in many developing countries show that these currency flows bring in more income than both foreign direct investment (FDI) and international development aid. Studies performed so far in Latin America show that remittance flows have a significant although moderate impact on economic and social development in receiving countries. However, these studies have failed to consider differences associated with the origin of remittances (i.e., North-South remittances versus South-South remittances). They implicitly assume that the impact of remittances is unaffected by the type of corridor through which they come. This document discuss that this assumption could prove to be mistaken if the socioeconomic profile of migrants is directly associated with the country to which they migrate and the kinds of opportunities they find for employment and compensation so as to send money home to families or friends.

Suicide postvention comprises a concerted response to, and provision of care for, people bereaved by suicide including those impacted by the suicide of a family member, friend or person in their social network. Currently, various forms of postvention services are available, such as group support, grief counselling, outreach by agencies and online support. Despite the devastating and lasting effects, a suicide can have on the bereaved and the number of people affected, little is known of what helps bereaved individuals. This review examines what suicide postvention models have been shown to be effective to reduce distress in family, friends and communities following a suicide along with what service components contribute to effectiveness.

According to WHO, more than 320 million people are suffering from depression, which had caused great financial burden. It affects all kinds of people and all aspects of life, including performance at school, productivity at work, relationships with family and friends, and ability to participate in the community.

• Older adults have complex and unique needs that can influence how and when cancer is diagnosed, the types of treatment that are offered, how well treatment is tolerated and treatment outcomes. • This Evidence Check review identified 41 studies that specifically addressed barriers and enablers to cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment among adults aged 65 years and older. • Question 1: The main barriers for older people at risk of and/or living with cancer to access and participate in timely cancer screening relate to lack of knowledge, fear of cancer, negative beliefs about the consequences of cancer, and hygiene concerns in completing testing. The main enablers to participation in timely cancer screening include positive/helpful beliefs about screening, social influences that encourage participation and knowledge. • Question 2: The main barriers for older people at risk of and/or living with cancer to access and/or seek timely cancer diagnosis relate to lack of knowledge of the signs and symptoms of cancer that are distinct from existing conditions and ageing, healthcare accessibility difficulties, perceived inadequate clinical response from healthcare providers, and harmful patient beliefs about risk factors and signs of cancer. The main enablers to accessing and/or seeking a timely cancer diagnosis include knowledge of the signs and symptoms of cancer, and support from family and friends that encourage help-seeking for symptoms. • Question 3: The main barriers for older people at risk of and/or living with cancer in accessing and completing cancer treatment include discrimination against patients in the form of ageism, lack of knowledge, patient concern about the adverse effects of treatment, predominantly on their independence, healthcare accessibility difficulties including travel and financial burden, and patients’ caring responsibilities. The main enablers to accessing and completing cancer treatment are social support from peers in a similar situation, family and friends, the influence of healthcare providers, and involving patients in treatment decision making. • Implications. The development of strategies to address the inequity of cancer outcomes in people aged 65 years and older in NSW should consider: Increasing community members’ and patients’ knowledge and awareness by providing written information and decision support tools from a trusted source Reducing travel and financial burden by widely disseminating information about existing support schemes and expanding remote patient monitoring and telehealth Improving social support by promoting peer support, and building the support capacity of family carers Addressing ageism by supporting patients in decision making, and disseminating education initiatives about geriatric oncology to healthcare providers Providing interdisciplinary geriatric oncology care by including a geriatrician as part of multidisciplinary teams and/or expanding geriatric oncology clinics.

As many children and young people work in the AES in this area, the location was selected as one of the most important working locations for CLARISSA Action Research. This Evidence Snapshot, commissioned by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, summarises the evidence on improving oral health for adults with disability, and reducing associated risks to health and wellbeing. Most studies looked people with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) and one at people with schizophrenia. Interventions included those directed to people with IDD and to caregivers, care planning and organisational interventions, and training interventions (for people with disability, family and carers, and clinical and non-clinical support workers). The report provides a comprehensive set of key messages related to the design and implementation of interventions, drawn from both peer reviewed and grey literature. The Snapshot is one of three rapid reviews funded by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission examining effective strategies to improve the health of people with disabilities.

Review question / Objective: A meta-analysis of cross-sectional, case-control and cohort studies (S) was conducted to explore whether women with POI/POF (P) could increase risk of depression, anxiety, and poor quality of life (O). Intervention studies (I) are eligible only if pre-intervention data were available(I) and the comparator(C) of this meta-analysis was people who do not suffer from POI (age-matched). Condition being studied: Several studies have been conducted to show that POI affects the quality of life of patients, of which psychological and psychosocial factors cannot be ignored as a part. Most studies have shown that POI patients are more prone to negative emotions such as depression and anxiety than normal people, but some studies have also shown that normal POI patients are psychologically indistinguishable from normal people. Therefore, meta-analysis is needed to determine the effect of POI on psychological factors and to better guide the clinical treatment plan.
